НАША ВІРА

OUR FAITH

,,Що хочеш, щоби Я зробив тобі?” — спитав Христос. ,,Господи, щоби я прозрів”, — відповів сліпець. Ісус промовив до нього: ,,Прозри! Віра твоя спасла тебе”. І вмить прозрів той. Чи став він вірним послідовником Христа, про це Євангеліє не згадає, одначе, це був непересічний чоловік. Якщо візьмемо до уваги людей, що брали участь в тій події, то ще не ясно, хто був сліпим, чи здорові люди, які бачили в Христі лише Ісуса з Назарету, чи сліпець, який в Христі бачив Бога, Спасителя світу. Сліпець мав віру, ще до того як був оздоровлений. Незважаючи на докори з боку натовпу, він безупинно кликав: ,,Ісусе, сину Давидів, помилуй мене!” Віра сліпця примушує нас застановитися над питанням: ,,Що таке віра?” Ніхто не може дати нам кращої відповіді на нього, як апостол Павло. Колись він переслідував Христову Церкву. Але одного разу по дорозі до Дамаску мав видіння воскреслого Христа. Це видіння поклало кінець його переслідуванням. Воно теж навчило Павла, що віра не приходить до нас через заслуги, чи внаслідок добрих діл. Ми не можемо самі набути віру, вона приходить до нас як Божий дар, як Божа ласка. Очевидно, ми маємо каятися за наші гріхи, очевидно, ми (закінчення на 2-ій стор.)

“What do you want Me to do for you?” Jesus asked. “Lord, I want to see,” answered the blind man. Jesus replied: “Be on your way. Your faith has healed you.” The blind man immediately received his sight. The Holy Gospel does not tell us whether or not this man became a faithful follower of Christ, but this was not your average man. When we consider the people who were present during this healing, who was really blind? Was it the people who had their sight but only saw Christ as Jesus of Nazareth, or was it the blind man who saw Christ as God, the Savior of the world? The blind man had faith before he was healed and also afterwards. Despite the fact that the people around him told him to be quiet, the blind man continued to call out: “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” The blind man’s faith makes us stop and ask ourselves: “What is faith?” No one can give us a better answer to this question than the apostle Paul. Once he had persecuted Christ’s Church. But, one day, on the road to Damascus, the resurrected Christ appeared to him. This appearance put an end to Paul’s persecution of Christians. It also taught Paul that faith does not come to us through our own good deeds. We cannot attain faith on our own; it comes to us as a gift, a (Continued on page 2)

(закінчення з 1-ої стор.) повинні виявити нашу християнську віру любов’ю до ближнього, але завжди залишиться вічна правда, що віра — це Божий дар, і ціле наше християнське життя залежить від того, чи ми прийняли ту Божу ласку, яку називаємо вірою. Кажуть, що однією з найбільших проблем, яку переживає сучасне людство — є криза віри. Для сьогоднішньої людини вірити не є легко, ще важче для неї почати вірити, але найважче є залишитися віруючою людиною. Господь обдарував нас чудовими дарами. Ці дари — це наше сотворення, спасіння, вічне життя. Це є ті речі, за які ми повинні дякувати Богові. Але вони для нас далекі, невиразні, майже нереальні. Нашою проблемою є духовна короткозорість. Якщо ми маємо просити Господа про щонебудь, то просім Його про духовне прозріння. Так як Вартимей, що був чудесно вилікуваний зі сліпоти тому, що просив. Подібно й ми просім Господа про дар віри, бо лише глибока віра може вилікувати нашу духовну короткозорість, лише при допомозі віри ми можемо зрозуміти Божі правди.

Of course, we must repent our sins and we should express our Christian faith through love of neighbor, but the eternal truth remains that faith is a gift from God and our entire Christian life depends on whether or not we accept this grace from God which we call faith. It is said that one of the biggest problems facing people today is a crisis of faith. It is not easy for people today to believe and even harder for them to begin to believe. But, the hardest thing to do is to steadfastly maintain your faith. The Lord has blessed us with many gifts. These gifts include: our creation, salvation and eternal life. These are the things for which we should thank God. But they seem to us to be distant, unclear, almost unreal. Our problem is spiritual short-sightedness. If we are to ask the Lord for anything, let us ask Him for spiritual sight. Just like Bartimaeus, who was miraculously healed of blindness because he asked. Let us ask the Lord for the gift of faith, for only deep faith can heal our spiritual short-sightedness; only with the help of faith can we truly understand God’s truths.

Дорогі у Христі! Головною духовною темою минулого 2008 року, згідно з постановою Синоду Єпископів Української Греко-

Католицької Церкви 2007 року, було християнське покликання. Щиро сподіваємося, що упродовж року, який добігає до кінця, ми всі – чи то духовенство, чи миряни, чи старші, чи молодші – справді збагатилися, усвідомивши, що кожна людина, яка народжується на світ, крім дару життя і святої віри, одержує від свого Творця особливе життєве завдання – покликання. Надіємося також, що кожен вірний намагався пильніше розпізнати власне покликання, плекати та дуже сумлінно виконувати його на Божу славу, на благо своїх ближніх та, найважливіше, для зрозуміння змісту свого життя. За це ми щиро молилися, співаючи під час Святої Літургії на сугубій ектенії: «Ще молимось за всіх людей, щоб дане їм Господом покликання охоче приймали, за нього Богові щиро дякували, його сумлінно та витривало сповняли та Богові й людям ним радо служили». Синод Єпископів Української Греко-Католицької Церкви, який відбувся у вересні цього року, постановив продовжити на наступний 2009 рік тему християнського покликання з наголосом на священичому покликанні і, замість

вищенаведеного прохання, співати у сугубій ектенії: «Ще молимось за наших священиків, дияконів, семінаристів та за їх святе покликання». Молитва Слуги Божого Митрополита Андрея Шептицького про добре українське духовенство, яку поручаємо молитися усім вірним нашої Церкви Господи, Господи, поглянь з неба, подивись і відвідай виноградник, який насадила правиця Твоя. Нехай всемогутня Твоя Рука буде завжди над цим народом, що його Ти полюбив. Дай йому, Предвічний Боже, у кожному поколінні, аж до кінця світу, єпископів і священиків святих, повних Твого Духа, — пастирів й учителів Твого Закону, що вміли б незмінно зберігати правду Твого святого Об'явлення та з любов'ю навчати й вести цей великий нарід. Даруй українському духовенству ласку ніколи не боятися пожертвування, де тільки йде про Твою славу й добро цього народу.

Proclamation to the faithful of the UGCC on the year of God 2009, the Year of Christian Vocation, with special emphasis on the priestly vocation Most Reverend and highly honored Clergy Honored Monks and Nuns, Dearly beloved in Christ Lay Sisters and Brothers: God’s blessing and peace in the Lord!

Dearly beloved in Christ! The main spiritual theme of the past year 2008, according to the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church of 2007, was Christian vocation. We hope sincerely that during the year which is running to an end we all – clergy or laity, older or younger – indeed were enriched by realizing that everybody who is born in the world in addition to the gift of life and holy faith obtains from the Creator a special task in life, which is a vocation. We hope also that every faithful person tried to recognize more intently his or her own vocation, to cherish and very conscientiously carry it out for the divine glory, for the good of one’s neighbor, and, most importantly, for understanding the meaning of one’s own life. We prayed sincerely for this, singing during the Divine Liturgy in the litany: «Again we pray for all people that they accept with interest the vocation given them by the Lord, that

they thank God for it sincerely, and conscientiously and persistently carry it out and serve by it God and people gladly.»

The Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, which took place on September of this year, decreed to continue in the following year, 2009, the theme of Christian vocation with an accent on the priestly vocation, and instead of the abovementioned petition, to sing in the litany: «Again we pray for our priests, deacons, seminarians, and for their holy vocation.» Prayer of the Servant of God Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky for good Ukrainian clergy, for which we entrust all the faithful of our Church to pray Lord, O Lord, look down from heaven and visit the vineyard which was planted by Your hand. May Your all-powerful hand be always on this people which You have loved. Give it, Eternal God, in every generation, until the end of the world, holy bishops and priests, filled with Your Spirit — pastors and teachers of Your law, who would be able unchanging to keep the truth of Your holy incarnation and with love to teach and to lead this great people. Grant to the Ukrainian clergy the grace to be never afraid of sacrifice, where the only matter is Your glory and the good of this people. Set on fire in the hearts of Ukrainian priests the spirit of zealousness for the salvation of souls. Open before their eyes the wisdom of Your revelation and give them high feeling for the holiness of those things to which you called them. Bless their work and their intentions. Protect them from every misfortune. And unite them with Your blessings, so that in love they be one – as you, Father with Your Son and the Son with You. Amen.

Хрещення: Слід усталити дату з священником не менш як за місяць до запланованого дня хрестин. Батьки і хресні мають виконати необхідне приготування, про яке довідаються в священика.

Шлюб: Наречені мають вписатися в книгу на вінчання заздалегідь, але не менш як за 6 місяців до церемонії. За шість місяців наречені мають відбути підготовчі бесіди із священиком. Принаймні один з наречених, або їх батьки мають бути зареєстрованими практикуючими парафіянами катедри, щоби вінчання могло відбутися саме в катедрі св. Миколая.

Перебування в лікарні: Згідно федерального закону про дотримання таємниці (Privacy Law), адміністрація лікарні не зобов'язана повідомляти церковну канцелярію про перебування ії парафіян у лікарні. Якщо парафіянин чи парафіянка перебувають у лікарні та бажають, щоб їх відвідав священик, просимо повідомити про це працівників канцелярії за телефоном: 773-276-4537.

Confessions are heard on Sundays during each Baptisms should be arranged through a priest at least one month prior to the date of baptism. Parents and sponsors must attend instruction prior to the baptism of their child.

Marriage:

Couples planning to marry are requested to make their arrangements early, but no less than six (6) months in advance of the proposed date. Pre-marital conferences must be arranged six (6) months prior to the ceremony. At least one of the couple, or their parents should be registered participating members of St. Nicholas Cathedral for eligibility to be married in the cathedral.

Sick & Homebound: If you or a family member are confined to home and are unable to attend Liturgy either temporarily or on a continuing basis, and wish to receive communion, please notify the parish office. Hospital Stay: If you or a family member are admitted to a hospital for any reason and wish to have a priest come to visit, please notify the parish office. Recent federal privacy laws do not allow hospitals to notify the parish if you are admitted. It is the responsibility of the patient or family to notify the parish office.

Після Літургії служитиметься Молебень за Пратулинських мучеників. Запрошуємо послухати ангельський спів наших учнів і підтримати їх в «День Відкритих Дверей.»

Saints of the Day Our holy fathers, Athanasius & Cyril, Archbishops of Alexandria. St. Athanasius is one of the four great doctors of the Byzantine Catholic Church: called the “Father of Orthodoxy.” He opposed the Arians with admirable zeal and endured exile for 46 years. He died in A.D. 373 St. Cyril opposed the Nestorians and taught that the divine and human natures of Christ are united in oneness of person, and that the Blessed Virgin ought truly to be called the Mother of God. He presided over the 3rd Ecumenical Council at Ephesus A.D. 431. He died in A.D. 444.
