SERVING GOD THE CREATOR Today’s Holy Gospel brings us to Christ, the Son of God, on the threshold of His public life as He calls to Himself the future Apostles. These were ordinary men, mostly fishermen, who, from the moment Christ called them to follow Him, would spend all their time with Him, listening to His teachings and observing His life, preparing themselves to become “fishers of men.” Christ was able to inspire men from all walks of life to leave everything behind and follow Him. The road He chose for His apostles was not an easy one, rather it was one filled with disadvantages, suffering and eventual death. The apostles had to give up their livelihood, their families, even their native land and go to foreign lands to spread the word of God. Christ, as He prepared to leave this earth, gave them this assignment: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you” (Mt. 28, 19c). Jesus Christ turns to each of us and calls upon us to help Him complete the task which His Heavenly Father sent Him to this earth to do. As we know, Jesus came to earth to serve humanity and by this service to save mankind from sin and the power of the devil: “The Son of Man has come, not to be served by others, but to serve, to give His own life as a ransom for the many” (Mt. 20, 28). Because Jesus Himself served the people so faithfully, He earned the right to receive the same service. That is why He says: “If a man wishes to come after Me, he must deny his very self, take up his cross and begin to follow in My footsteps” (Mt. 16, 24). And a man who does not want to do so is not worthy of being a disciple of Christ: “He who will not take up his cross and come after Me is not worthy of Me” (Mt. 10, 38). Each of us who wants to attain the purpose of his existence on earth — eternal salvation in heaven — must become a disciple of Christ. And to do so, he must follow in Christ’s footsteps, live as Christ lived, and accomplish the task Christ was sent to accomplish. (Continued on page 2)

ЖИТТЯ ЛЮДИНИ ЦЕ СЛУЖБА БОГОВІ ТВОРЦЕВІ Свята Євангелія приводить нас сьогодні до Христа — Божого Сина, як Він на порозі свого публічного життя покликає своїх майбутніх Апостолів. Вони були звичайними, простими людьми, переважно рибалками, які від часу їхнього покликання мали перебувати стало в Його товаристві, слухати Його навчання й обсервуючи Його життя, пригото влятися до їхнього майбу тнього завдання ,,ловців людей”. Коли так глядимо як Спаситель на всякі лади покликує різних людей, мусимо подивляти Його Божий розум, який знає прерізні способи приєднувати собі людей і спонукувати їх, щоби полишивши все пішли за Ним. Дорога, яку Він вибрав для Своїх апостолівбула нелегка, навпаки, вона була повна невигод, умертвління й терпінь. Вони мусіли покидати свої зайняття, родини, навіть свій рідний край і йти в далекі чужі сторони, щоб там голосити слово Боже і цим виконати доручення свого Вчителя. Він бо, полишаючи цю землю, дав їм оце завдання, кажучи: ,,Ідіть отже й робіть учнями всі народи: христячи їх у ім’я Отця й Сина і Святого Духа; навчаючи їх берегти все, що Я вам заповідав” (Мт. 28, 19с). Так ото Ісус Христос звертається до кожного з нас і кличе, щоб ми помагали Йому виконати діло, на яке послав на землю Його небесний Отець. Як знаємо, Христос Господь прийшов на цей світ на те, щоб послужити людям і тією своєю службою спасти їх від гріха й влади диявола: ,,Син Чоловічий прийшов не на те, щоб йому служити, але послужити й дати життя своє на викуп за многих” (Мт. 20, 28). Коли ж Він сам так вірно служив людям, Він заслужив собі право вимагати й від нас подібного служіння. Тому то й каже: ,,Коли хтось хоче йти за Мною, нехай зречеться себе самого, візьме хрест свій і йде за Мною” (Мт. 16, 24). А хто не хоче того зробити, той негідний бути учнем Спасителя: ,,Хто не бере свого хреста й не йде слідом за мною, той недостойний (закінчення на 2-ій стор.)

Інакшими словами: кожний з нас, що хоче осягнути мету свого існування на землі, тобто вічне спасіння в небі, мусить стати учнем Христовим.А щоб ним стати, мусить іти слідом за Ісусом, а саме жити так, як Він жив і так допомагати Йому звершити те діло, на яке послав Христа Його небесний Отець. Його діло є воднораз і нашим ділом, а виконуватимемо його тим, що поширюватимемо Його Божу науку серед людей. І то не лише самими словами, але, подібно як і сам Спаситель, головно нашими добрими ділами. Бо хоч слова й переконують та й поясняють науку Христову, то все-таки діла, тобто приклад потягає людей і вони наслідуючи наше богобоязливе життя, спасатимуть свої безсмертні душі. Вже в самому навчанні Христа криється спасіння, життя вічне, як про це говорить сам Ісус: ,,А вічне життя в тому, щоб вони пізнали Тебе єдиного, правдивого Бога й того, що його Ти послав — Ісуса Христа” (Йо.17, 3).

Christ’s task is also our task and we must spread His teaching to others. Not just with words but, like Christ, with the example of our good deeds. Words may attract people, but a good example will inspire them to emulate it. In Christ’s words we find salvation and eternal life: “Eternal life is this: to know You, the only true God, and Him Whom You have sent, Jesus Christ” (Jn. 17, 3).

Вірних УГКЦ запрошено до участі у підготовці майбутнього Синоду 2 квітня 2009 року Блаженніший Любомир, Верховний Архиєпископ Києво-Галицький, підписав декрет, яким, на підставі рішення минулорічного Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ, проголосив скликання Синоду Єпископів Української Греко-Католицької Церкви 2009 року. Синод відбудеться у Львові Брюховичах від 29 листопада до 9 грудня. Блаженніший Любомир закликає вірних Церкви молитися за те, щоб підготовка і проведення Синоду, його напрацювання були плідними для життя УГКЦ. Як розповів Блаженніший Любомир, головною темою Синоду у 2009 році є євангелізація. «Євангелізація – це ділення своєю вірою із тими, хто її ще не одержав та з тими, у кого вона ослабла. У пострадянському періоді ми бачимо, що у багатьох людей знання і розуміння Бога є дуже поверхове. Завдання Церкви – нікому не накидаючи Божого слова, представляти правди віри. Допомогти людям зрозуміти своє покликання, життєве завдання», – пояснив Предстоятель УГКЦ. У 2009 році, як і в 2006 - 2008 роках, духовенство й мирян Української Греко-Католицької Церкви запрошують до участі у підготовці наступного Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ. Про це Глава УГКЦ, зокрема, сказав: «У минулі роки ми закликали священиків, монахів та мирян, охочих висловитися щодо теми Синоду, присилати свої думки до секретаріату Синоду. Багато членів нашої Церкви зробили це, за що ми їм дуже вдячні. Секретаріат ознайомився з їхніми пропозиціями, і на їх підставі зробив підсумок, який пізніше роздано всім владикам як частину матеріалів Синоду. Окремі думки справді збагатили нашу дискусію». Як зазначив Блаженніший Любомир, цього року, з огляду на позитивний досвід, вирішено повторити таку спробу, «адже Святий Дух діє у різні способи і через різних людей». «Тому запрошуємо членів нашої Церкви, якщо вони відчувають, що мають думки, які можуть допомогти плідно опрацювати головну тему Синоду, письмово викласти їх», – сказав Глава УГКЦ. Просимо всіх охочих до 30 вересня 2009 року надіслати свої роздуми на адресу секретаріату Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ (вул. Різницька, 11Б/28-29, м. Київ, 01001) або на ел. скриньку (e-mail: [email protected] ) з приміткою «Про євангелізацію». Департамент інформації УГКЦ Faithful of the UGCC are invited to participate in the preparation of the future synod On April 2, 2009, His Beatitude Lubomyr, Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych, signed a decree which, on the basis of the decision of last year's Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, proclaimed the convocation of the 2009 Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. The synod will take place in Lviv - Bryukhovychi from November 29 to December 9. His Beatitude Lubomyr calls the faithful of the Church to pray that the preparation and conduct of the synod and its work be fruitful for the life of the UGCC. As His Beatitude Lubomyr said, the main theme of the 2009 synod is evangelization. «Evangelization is sharing the faith with those who have not yet received it and with those in whom it has become weak. In the post-Soviet period we see that, for many people, the knowledge and understanding of God is very superficial. The task of the Church, while not forcing the divine word on anybody, is to present the truths of the faith. To help people understand their vocation and task in life,» the Head of the UGCC explained. In 2009, as well as from 2006 to 2008, the clergy and laity of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church are invited to participate in the preparation of the next Synod of Bishops of the UGCC. About this the Head of the UGCC, in particular, said: «In past years we have called priests, religious and lay people who are interested in expressing their thoughts on the theme of the synod to send their opinions to the secretariat of the synod. Many members of our Church have done this, for which we are very thankful to them. The secretariat familiarized itself with their suggestions and on their basis made a summary which was later given to all the bishops as part of the materials of the synod. Certain ideas indeed enriched our discussion.» As His Beatitude Lubomyr noted, this year, considering the positive experience, it has been decided to repeat such an attempt: «in fact the Holy Spirit operates in different ways and through different people… Therefore we invite the members of our Church, if they feel they have ideas which can help fruitfully develop the main theme of the synod, to express them in written form,» the Head of the UGCC said. Шлюб: Наречені мають вписатися в книгу на вінчання заздалегідь, але не менш як за 6 місяців до церемонії. За шість місяців наречені мають відбути підготовчі бесіди із священиком. Принаймні один з наречених, або їх батьки мають бути зареєстрованими практикуючими парафіянами катедри, щоби вінчання могло відбутися саме в катедрі св. Миколая.

Перебування в лікарні: Якщо Ви, або хтось з Вашоі родини, з будь яких причин, є на лікуванні в лікарні й бажає щоб священик його відвідав просимо повідомити про це парафіяльну канцелярію. Федеральний уряд законом про втримання таємниці (privacy law) , не дозволяє лікарній адміністрації давати знати парафії. Це є відповідальністю паціента або його родини.

Sick & Homebound: If you or a family member are confined to home and are unable to attend Liturgy either temporarily or on a continuing basis, and wish to receive communion, please notify the parish office. Hospital Stay: If you or a family member are admitted to a hospital for any reason and wish to have a priest come to visit, please notify the parish office. Recent federal privacy laws do not allow hospitals to notify the parish if you are admitted. It is the responsibility of the patient or family to notify the parish office.

In the age of St. Jerome his grave in Samaria was shown as containing also the body of St. Abdias, the Prophet. He died in the 8th century B.C. Our holy father, Methodius, Patriarch of Constantinople, native Sicily, was induced by the Empress Theodora to accept the See of Constantinople as successor to the Patriarch Nicephorus. He was celebrated for his sanctity in the Episcopate of his successor St. Ignatius. He died A.D. 846
