БОГОЯВЛІННЯ В ці дні обходимо великий роковий празник, а саме Свято Богоявління, тобто появи Бога, чи радше появи Пресвятої Тройці й об’явлення того Божого Таїнства. Пресвята Тройця об’явила себе перший раз при хрищенні Ісуса Христа Божого Сина. Про цю появу й об’явлення Тайни Пресвятої Тройці розказує св. Письмо ось як: ,,Охристившись, Ісус зараз же вийшов з води. І ось розкрилось йому небо й він побачив Духа Божого, який спускався мов голуб, і зійшов на нього. І ось голос пролунав з неба: ,,Це Син мій любий, що його я вподобав” (Мт. 3,16с). Розважмо однак дещо про причину появи Пресвятої Тройці. Ісус Христос, заки ще почав свій публічний виступ як Месія, великий учитель народу, прийшов до св. Йоана Христителя, свого предтечі, який, перебуваючи поблизу річки Йордану, проповідував покаяння всім, що хотіли його слухати; а тих, які визнавали свої гріхи й на знак каяття й готовості завернути з дороги гріха, христив у Йордані. Вони, признаючи свою гріховність, входили в річку Йордан, св. Йоан поливав їхні голови водою і так він їх христив. Це хрищення не було нічим іншим, як признанням до гріхів і висловом бажання відректися гріховного життя, щоб приготуватись до приходу Месії й спасіння, що той мав зі своїм приходом принести. Самозрозуміло, що св. Тайна Хрищення є одною з найбільших ласк, яку небесний Отець дав нам для спасіння наших душ. В ній ми, грішники, стаємо (закінчення на 2-ій стор.)

THEOPHANY During this period, we celebrate a great annual feast, the Feast of the Theophany, the appearance of God, or rather the appearance of the Holy Trinity and the revelation of this Mystery of God. The Holy Trinity revealed itself for the first time during the baptism of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The Holy Gospel relates this revelation of the Holy Trinity in this way: “After Jesus was baptized, He came directly out of the water. Suddenly the sky opened and He saw the Spirit of God descend like a dove and hover over Him. With that, a voice from the heavens said: ‘This is my beloved Son. My favor rests on Him’” (Mt. 3,16ff). Let us consider the reason for the appearance of the Holy Trinity. Jesus Christ, before He began His public life as the Messiah and great teacher of the people, came to St. John the Baptist, His precursor, who lived near the river Jordan and preached repentance to all who would listen to him. Those who admitted their sins and showed their willingness to repent and turn away from sin, he baptized in the Jordan river. These people, repenting their sins, walked into the river Jordan and St. John poured water on their heads and thus baptized them. This baptism was nothing more than an admission of sin and a desire to turn aside from the path of sin in order to prepare for the coming of the Messiah and the salvation He would bring. It is self-evident that the Sacrament of Baptism is one of the greatest gifts which the Father has given us for the salvation of our souls. In this Sacrament, we, sinners, become legal children of God, all our sins are washed (Continued on page 2)

законними дітьми Божими, всі наші гріхи змиваються й пропадають, наче б їх ніколи й не було, і ми звільнюємось від влади диявола. Чому? Бо якраз те, що підкоряло нас його владі, що віддавало в його руки - первородний гріх - усувається цілковито. Так як для нас хрищення є найбільшою ласкою й щастям, так Христове хрищення було найбільшим упокоренням. Пресвята Тройця появляється й заявля є, що оця людина - Христос, хоч і понижується, беручи на себе гріхи людства, як представник оцього грішного людського роду, є воднораз єдинородним Сином небесного Отця. Його Він безмежно любить, та й послав Його на землю, щоби люди підкорилисьЙому і, підкорившись, мали життя вічне. Бо хто повірує в Нього і послухається Його, спасеться, як про це запевняє нас Христос: ,,Бо не послав Бог Сина в світ, щоб засудити світ, але щоб ним світ спасти. Хто вірує в нього, не буде засуджений, хто ж не вірує той уже засуджений, бо не увірував у ім’я Єдинородного Сина Божого” (Йо. 3,17с).

way, as if they never existed, and we are freed from the clutches of the devil. Why? Because that which gave the devil power over us - original sin - is completely removed. As baptism is for us the greatest and happiest gift, so Jesus’ baptism was the greatest act of humility. The Holy Trinity appears and announces that this person - Christ - although He has humbled Himself by taking human form and becoming a representative of humanity, is, at the same time, the Only-Begotten Son of the Heavenly Father, Who has sent His Son to earth for the salvation of mankind. As the Holy Gospel tells us: “God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. Whoever believes in Him avoids condemnation but whoever does not believe is already condemned for not believing in the name of God’s only Son” (Jn. 3,17ff).

ПРАЗНИК ГОСПОДНЬОГО БОГОЯВЛІННЯ “Тоді прибув Ісус із Галилеї на йордан до Йоана, щоб христитися від нього” (Матей 3, 13) Св. Церква перед празником Господнього Богоявління у своїх богослуженнях взиває своїх вірних: “Вифлеєм оставивши, преславне чудо, скоро спішімо до йордану душею теплою і там побачимо страшне таїнство” (Світилен утрені з 3-го січня). Це страшне таїнство – це таїнство Господнього Богоявління, це Хрищення Господа нашого Ісуса Христа в ріці Йордані. В цьому таїнстві Ісус Христос об’являє себе, як Месію і Спасителя. Про Його Боже післанництво свідчить при Хрищенні сам Отець Небесний голосом із неба: “Ти єси Син мій любий, у тобі – моє уподобання” (Мар. 1, 11); свідчить Святий Дух, що у виді голуба сходить на Нього; свідчить і св. Іван Христитель вказуючи на Нього: “Ось Агнець Божий, який гріхи світу забирає” (Ів. 1, 29). Празник Господнього Богоявління належить до найдавніших і найбільших празників нашого церковного року. На осібну увагу заслуговує його назва, його історія та об’явлення таїнства Пресв. Трійці. НАЗВА ПРАЗНИКА Празник Господнього Богоявління у перших віках християнства уважався збірним празником, бо лучив у собі більше подій із життя Ісуса Христа, які свідчили про Його Божество, а саме, Його Різдво, поклін мудреців, хрищення, чудо в Кані Галилейській і чудесне розмноження хліба. Тому й нашу назву “Богоявління” треба розуміти у множині, бо вона означає празник святих Богоявлінь.

Before the feast of the Theophany, Holy Church in her services exhorts her faithful: “Leaving the glorious miracle of Bethlehem, let us quickly hasten to the Jordan with an ardent spirit; there we shall witness an awesome mystery...” (Exapostilarion of Matins of the 3rd of January). That awesome mystery is the mystery of the Theophany of the Lord, the self-revelation of God at the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ in the river Jordan. In this mystery Jesus Christ reveals himself as the Messiah and Saviour. As Christ is baptized, the voice of his heavenly Father bears witness to the divine mission of Jesus: “You are my beloved Son, in you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1,11) The Holy Spirit bears witness to him by descending upon him in the form of a dove. St. John the Baptist also bears witness as he points to him, saying: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.” (John 1,29) The feast of the Theophany of our Lord is among the most ancient and greatest feasts of our Ecclesiastical Year. The name of this feast, its history, and the revelation of the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity that accompanied it, deserves special consideration here.

Name of the Feast In the first centuries of Christianity, the feast of the Theophany was regarded as a collective feast for it embraced other events in the life of Jesus Christ which bore witness to his divinity - namely, his Nativity, the homage of the Wise Men from the East, his baptism, the miracle at Cana of Galilee and the miraculous multiplication of the loaves. Thus our name “Theophany” must be understood in the plural sense for it means a feast of holy Theophanies. In ancient times, on the feast of the

У давнину на празник Богоявління відбувалося урочисте хрищення оглашенних, яке звано також світлом або просвіченням, а оглашенні звалися просвічені. Звідси і празник Богоявління звався просвіченням, празником світел і святими світлами, бо Ісус прийшов, щоб усіх просвітити. “Народ, який сидів у темноті – читаємо у св. Євангелії – побачив велике світло. Тим, що сиділи в країні й тіні смерти, зійшло їм світло” (Мат. 4, 16). Деякі автори є тієї думки, що цей празник ще й тому звався празником світел, бо в часі хрищення оглашенних освітлювано Божий храм великим множеством свічок, які були символом світла пізнання правдивого Бога. Св. Григорій Богослов (†389) своїй проповіді на Богоявління дає таку назву: Слово на святі світла явлінь Господніх. Він так її починає: “Знову мій Ісус і знову таїнство... (себто знову новий празник після Христового Різдва), таїнство взнесле й божественне, що звіщає нам небесну світлість! Бо святий день світел, що його ми дочекалися і удостоїлися празнувати, має за початок Хрищення мойого Христа “справжнє світло, що просвічує кожну людину, що приходить на світ” (Іван 1, 9). А в наступній проповіді про святе Хрищення він обширніше пояснює, що розуміє під просвіченням. “Вчора ми празнували каже він - пресвітлий день світел... а сьогодні говоритимемо про хрищення і його благодійне, ділання на нас... Просвічення це підмога у нашій немочі, відложення тіла, прямування за Духом, приставання зі Словом, направа створення, потоплення гріха, причастя світла, розвіяння темноти. Просвічення це колісниця, що підносить до Бога, співподорожування з Христом, скріплення віри, здосконалення ума, ключ царства небесного, переміна життя, скинення неволі, розв’язання кайдан, переміна єства. Просвічення, - чи маю ще більше вичисляти? це найлучший і найвеличніший з Божих дарів ... Та цей дар, як і йогo Датель Христос, зветься багатьма різними іменами ... Ми його звемо даром, благодаттю, хрищенням, помазанням, просвіченням, одіжжю нетління, купіллю відродження, печаттю і всім, що для нас гідне почести”. Західня Церква в давнину звала Господнє Богоявління днем появи або появ і в його святкуванні звеличувала такі події: появу звізди, поклін мудреців, хрищення Ісуса тa! чудо в Кані Галилейській. Св. Августин (†430) у своїй проповіді на Богоявління каже: “Сьогодні ми празнуємо таїнство Богоявління у світі. Сьогодні Бог і на небі у звізді дав вістуна про своє Різдво, і хрищенням у Йордані освятив води для обнови людського роду, і в Кані Галилейській на весіллю перемінив воду у вино, і п’ятьма хпібами наситив п’ять тисяч людей”.

Theophany the solemn baptism of the catechumens took place. This baptism was also called light or enlightenment (illumination), and the catechumens were called “the enlightened”. Hence the feast of the Theophany was called Enlightenment or Illumination, the Feast of Lights and Holy Lights, for Jesus came to enlighten all people, “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light; and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death, a light has arisen.” (Matthew 4,16) Some authors are of the opinion that this feast was also called the feast of lights because during the baptism of the catechumens the church was lit up with a great number of candles, symbols of the light of the knowledge of the true God. St. Gregory the Theologian (†389) entitled his sermon on the Theophany: “A sermon on the holy lights of the Theophanies of the Lord.” He begins it thus: “Again my Jesus and again the mystery ... (i.e., again the new feast after the Nativity of Christ), the sublime and divine mystery, which announces to us heavenly light. For the holy day of lights, which has finally arrived and which we have become worthy to solemnize, had its beginning in the baptism of my Christ ‘the true light that enlightens every man that comes into the world.’” (John 1,9) In a subsequent sermon on holy baptism he explains more elaborately what he means by enlightenment: “Yesterday we celebrated the glorious day of lights ... and today we shall talk about baptism and its beneficent influence upon us... Enlightenment is a help in our weakness, a putting aside of the body, a seeking after the Spirit, a fellowship with the Word, a renewal of creation, a drowning of sin, a partaking of light, and a dispelling of darkness. Enlightenment is the chariot which raises us to God, making us co-travelers with Christ; it strengthens our faith, Perfects our mind, entrusts to us the keys of the kingdom of heaven; changes our lives, frees us from enslavement, loosens our chains, and changes our whole being. Enlightenment, - must I enumerate more? - is the best and most exalted of God’s gifts... This gift, just as its giver, Christ, is called by many names... We call it a gift, grace, baptism, anointing, enlightenment, the garment of incorruptibility, bath of regeneration, a seal and all that is for us worthy of honor.” The Western Church in ancient times called the Lord’s Theophany the day of the manifestation or manifestations, ‘and in celebrating this day she solemnized the following events: the manifestation of the star, the homage of the Wise Men, the baptism of Jesus and the miracle at Cana of Galilee. St. Augustine (†430) in his sermon on the Epiphany said: “Today we celebrate the mystery of the Epiphany on earth. Today God, by means of a star in the heavens, heralded his Nativity; and by baptism in the Jordan, he sanctified water for the renewal of mankind; at a wedding in Cana of Galilee, he changed water into wine; and with five loaves of bread he fed five thousand people.”

Хрещення: Слід усталити дату з священником не менш як за місяць до запланованого дня хрестин. Батьки і хресні мають виконати необхідне приготування, про яке довідаються в священика.

Шлюб: Наречені мають вписатися в книгу на вінчання заздалегідь, але не менш як за 6 місяців до церемонії. За шість місяців наречені мають відбути підготовчі бесіди із священиком. Принаймні один з наречених, або їх батьки мають бути зареєстрованими практикуючими парафіянами катедри, щоби вінчання могло відбутися саме в катедрі св. Миколая.

Перебування в лікарні: Згідно федерального закону про дотримання таємниці (Privacy Law), адміністрація лікарні не зобов'язана повідомляти церковну канцелярію про перебування ії парафіян у лікарні. Якщо парафіянин чи парафіянка перебувають у лікарні та бажають, щоб їх відвідав священик, просимо повідомити про це працівників канцелярії за телефоном: 773-276-4537.

Confessions are heard on Sundays during each Baptisms should be arranged through a priest at least one month prior to the date of baptism. Parents and sponsors must attend instruction prior to the baptism of their child.

Marriage:

Couples planning to marry are requested to make their arrangements early, but no less than six (6) months in advance of the proposed date. Pre-marital conferences must be arranged six (6) months prior to the ceremony. At least one of the couple, or their parents should be registered participating members of St. Nicholas Cathedral for eligibility to be married in the cathedral.

Sick & Homebound: If you or a family member are confined to home and are unable to attend Liturgy either temporarily or on a continuing basis, and wish to receive communion, please notify the parish office. Hospital Stay: If you or a family member are admitted to a hospital for any reason and wish to have a priest come to visit, please notify the parish office. Recent federal privacy laws do not allow hospitals to notify the parish if you are admitted. It is the responsibility of the patient or family to notify the parish office.
