ХРЕСТ — ЦЕ ЗНАК БОЖОЇ ЛЮБОВІ Кожна більша справа, яку нам доводиться виконувати, втомлює нас. Дуже часто ми знеохочуємося, і тому багато наших справ залишаються незакінченими. З Божою допомогою ми дійшли до середини Великого посту. Піст вимагає від нас самозречення, умертвлення нашого тіла. Сьогодні, схиляючи наші голови перед Чесним Животворним Хрестом, ми признаємо, що хрест це знак Божої любові і знаряддя жертовної смерті Господа нашого Ісуса Христа. Хрест є серцем Святого Євангелія. Христос вмер на хресті, щоби нас грішних поєднати з Богом. Він дозволив Своє тіло прибити до хреста і вмер, щоби ми мали вічне життя. Ось тому євангелисти так детально розповідають про Христове розп’яття. Вони хочуть нам пригадати: хто ми, і що ми робимо. Євангелисти ставлять хрест перед нашими очима, щоб пригадати, що ми спричинилися до Христової смерті. Наші гріхи, наша гордість, наше себелюбство і брак співчуття, нелюдяне поводження з нашим братом, наша нехіть змінити життя на краще, все це бунт, гріх, який пригвоздив Христа до хресного дерева. Людські гріхи вбили Христа. Якою повинна бути наша відповідь на любов жертвенної смерті Христа? Наша найкраща відповідь на Божу любов це — покута, чи інакше кажучи, нам треба признати провину, що ми спричинилися до Христових мук і Його смерті. Ми викручуємося, щоби лише себе оправдати. Якщо провинилися, тоді, звичайно, переносимо провину на інших. Ми звинувачуємо батьків, що нас погано виховали і не підготовили до життя у світі, в якому ми опинилися. А як доведеться нам бути батьками, тоді (закінчення на 2-ій стор.)

THE CROSS - A SYMBOL OF GOD’S LOVE Every large matter with which we have to deal tires us out. Very often we become discouraged and, therefore, many of these matters are left unfinished. With God’s help, we have come to the middle of the Great Fast. Fast r equi res self -denial and mortification of our body. Today, bowing our heads before the True Life-Giving Cross, we acknowledge that the cross is a symbol of God’s love and the instrument of the sacrificial death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The cross lies at the center of the Holy Gospels. Christ died on the cross to unite us sinners with God. He allowed His body to be nailed to the cross and died so that we would have eternal life. That is why the evangelists speak in such detail about Christ’s crucifixion. They want us to remember who we are and what we are doing The evangelists place the cross before our eyes in order to remind us that we are the cause of Christ’s death, our sins, our pride, our egotism and our lack of sympathy, inhuman behavior towards our brother, our unwillingness to change our life for the better; all this is the rebellion, the sin which nailed Christ to the cross. Mankind’s sins killed Christ. How should we respond to the love shown by the sacrificial death of Christ? The best response to God’s love is penance; we must acknowledge our transgression, and accept that we contributed to Christ’s suffering and death. we try to get around it, to make it seem as if it is someone else’s fault. We blame our parents for not raising us well enough to prepare us for life. And when we become parents, then we blame our children. One political party blames the other, one nation blames another; it is always someone else’s fault. The evangelists (Continued on page 2)

(закінчення з 1-ої стор.) звинувачуємо дітей. Одна політична партія звинувачує іншу, один народ звинувачує інший, завжди є хтось, хто винен, що ми зблудили. Євангелисти кажуть нам не звинувачувати нікого. Не жидівська старшина розп’яла Христа, але наші гріхи. Жидівська старшина була лише знаряддям виконання хресної смерті. Наші гріхи розіп’яли Христа. Тому нам треба признати свої провини і покутувати. Найкращий спосіб, який веде нас до покути є дивитись на хрест. Нам треба впасти на коліна і промовити: ,,Хресту Твоєму покланяємося, Владико, і святеє Воскресення Твоє славимо”. Щоби християни, прямуючи до досконалості, під час практикування самозречення, умертвлення не зневірилися і витримали в своїх постановах аж до світлого празника Христового Воскресіння, Церква ставить перед нашими очима хрест, з якого ми черпаємо силу, відвагу на наступні три тижні посту, та, щоб, перемігши внутрішніх і зовнішніх ворогів нашої душі, ми могли з радістю заспівати переможну пісню: ,,Христос Воскрес”.

tell us not to blame anyone else. It was not the Jewish hierarchy, but our sins, that crucified Christ. They were just the instrument to carry out the crucifixion. We must acknowledge our sins and repent. The best way to do this is to look at the cross, fall on our knees and say: “We venerate Your cross, O Lord, and glorify Your Holy Resurrection.” In order that Christians, during this time of selfdenial and mortification, maintain their resolve, the Church places the cross before our eyes to give us strength to overcome the internal and external enemies of our soul, so that we can joyfully sing the triumphal song: “Christ is Risen.”

ПРАВИЛА ПОСТУ 1. Строгий піст без м’яса і молочних продуктів обов’язує в перший день Великого посту й у Велику П’ятницю. 2. Піст без м’яса обов’язує в кожну п’ятницю Великого посту. 3. Ці правила обов’язують дітей від 14-го року та дорослих до 59-го року життя.

LENTEN REGULARIONS 1. Abstinence from meat and dairy products on the first day of the Great Fast and on Great Friday. 2. Abstinence from meat on all Fridays during the Great Fast. 3. Children from 14 years of age and all adults until they have completed their 59th birthday are to follow the abstinence regulations.

Гідний містоблюститель Священномученик Василь (Величковський) народився 1 червня 1903 р. у Станиславові. 1920 року вступив до Духовної Семінарії у Львові. У 1925 р., у Голоско біля Львова, склав перші монаші обіти в Чині Найсвятішого Ізбавителя й прийняв Св. Тайну Священства. Працював як місіонар на Волині. У 1942 р. став Ігуменом монастиря в Тернополі, де його й було заарештовано в 1945 р. та відправлено до Києва. Смертний вирок невдовзі замінили на 10 років ув'язнення й каторги. У 1955 р. повернувся до Львова, де продовжував душпастирську працю. Архиєрейські свячення прийняв таємно 4 лютого 1963 р. в московському готелі з рук Митрополита Йосифа (Сліпого), який, виїхавши до Риму, передав Кир Василеві відповідальність за катакомбну Церкву. Той, у свою чергу, передбачаючи можливий арешт, висвятив у 1964 р. нових підпільних єрархів, серед яких і свого наступника, Архиєпископа Володимира (Стернюка), якому судилося вивести Церкву з підпілля. У 1969 р. Владику Василя (Величковського) заарештували вдруге, а після трирічного ув'язнення - депортували за межі СРСР. Помер внаслідок важкої хвороби серця, на яку занедужав у в'язниці, 30 червня 1973 р. у Вінніпезі (Канада). "Після стільки літ, перебутих у тюрмах і засланнях, як мило бути разом з українськими людьми на волі. Яка радість ходити молитися свобідно до української церкви, де ніхто не засилає до таборів і тюрем за молитву... Тюрми й табори знищили моє здоров'я і мою силу, але така моя доля, це Господь Бог вложив на мої плечі хрест". З останньої промови Кир Василя перед вірними в Канаді, 17 червня 1973 р.

Worthy acting head Bishop and martyr Vasyl (Velychkovsky) was born June 1, 1903, in Ivano-Frankivsk. In 1920 he entered the seminary in Lviv. In 1925 in Holosko, near Lviv, he took his first religious vows in the Order of the Most Holy Redeemer and was ordained a priest. Father Vasyl became a missionary in Volyn. In 1942 he became the hegumen (prior) of the monastery in Ternopil, where he was arrested in 1945. He was then taken to Kyiv. His death sentence was soon commuted to 10 years of imprisonment and hard labor. He returned to Lviv in 1955, where he continued his pastoral work. In 1963 he was secretly ordained an archbishop in a Moscow hotel by Metropolitan Josyf (Slipyj), who, on his way to exile in Rome, passed Bishop Velychkovsky the responsibility for the catacomb Church. Predicting his own possible arrest, he ordained new underground bishops in 1964. Among them was his successor, Archbishop Volodymyr (Sterniuk), who eventually led the Church out of the underground. In 1969 Bishop (Velychkovsky) was arrested a second time, but after three years of imprisonment he was deported outside the USSR. He died in Winnipeg, Canada on June 30, 1973, as a consequence of serious heart disease which began when he was in prison. "After many years spent in prisons and labor camps, how pleasant it is to be free with my fellow Ukrainians. What joy to go to pray freely in a Ukrainian church, where no one will send you to the camps or prison because of your prayers The prisons and camps ruined my health and my strength, but this was my fate, the Lord God placed this cross on my shoulders." - From the last speech of Bishop Vasyl to the faithful in Canada, June 17, 1973.

On Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 4 P.M. our beloved Bishop Innocent Lotocky, O.S.B.M., will conduct a Holy Hour to prepare our souls for Pascha. During this Holy Hour, experience Christ’s patience, sympathize with Christ, reflect on Christ’s immeasurable Love for us as He pardons our sins of human life.
