Monday, the Western Command Military Vehicle Historical Society’s convoy of former Canadian military vehicles stopped along Quilchena Ave. in front of the Legion. The vehicles ranged from motorcycles and jeeps to large cargo trucks and halftracks, dating from the 1940s (World War 2) through to the 1980s. All the vehicles are privately owned and maintained. The convoy left Abbotsford, overnighted in Merritt, then carried on the rest of their tour to Kamloops, Chase, Salmon Arm, Enderby, Vernon, Kelowna, Peachland, Summerland, Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos, Keremeos and Princeton. The idea is to raise both youth and public awareness of Canada’s Veterans and the roles they played in the country’s Military history.

Walk of Stars walks away

Earlier this summer, the Walk of Stars approached Rhonda & Chris McDonald, owners of Urban Cabin in the old Armstrong Building, about leasing their newly renovated heritage building for a museum & the Country Music Hall of Honour. Word is that it was ‘an offer they couldn’t refuse’. But after musicfest organizers announced that they couldn’t pay their suppliers & workers, and they wouldn’t be holding another festival without a partner or major sponsor, the Walk of Stars walked away from their offer to Rhonda & Chris. The McDonalds already had their lawyer working on the lease, and had made the decision to liquidate stock & close Urban Cabin. Now things are looking quite a bit different… WoS had been humming & hawing about the Armstrong Building for a few years, even before Rhonda & Chris bought & renovated it. They’d approached former owner several times about buying the building, but never in a serious way. And thank goodness — it’s hard to imagine a more tasteful & generous renovation to a major downtown heritage building than what the McDonalds did. Then, seemed to me, WoS had the good sense to see the benefits of the beautiful building & perfect location with its proximity to the new square. Too bad they’ve walked… Aside from the bad karma of influencing a business to close its doors, the WoS museum could be an extraordinary asset to this town in such a place. If country music is part of our ‘heritage’ then it’s fitting that it’s housed in a heritage building. If downtown is to be the heart of a thriving community then it’s fitting that a major draw such as the Hall of Honour be at the heart of things. And with the back door literally giving onto the new Legacy Square, nobody with such a tourist draw could dream of a better location. —KL

BC Ambassador Program

The BC Ambassador Program coronation event will be held at the Merritt Civic Centre August 14-16. Candidates are from as far away as Revelstoke, Cowichan Lake, White Rock, Williams Lake and everywhere in between. Tickets at the door.

4th Annual Trevor Graham Memorial Fundraiser
