10-20 yr low flows Coldwater & Nicola Rivers are some of the lowest levels

With only near- to below-normal snow packs in southern BC last winter, the warm, dry weather in June is beginning to be reflected in below-normal river levels. Kamloops received only 1/5 of the normal amount of precipitation in June; Kelowna & Princeton received about 1/3 the normal amount of rainfall. Since the freshet peak in early-June, river levels have steadily declined. In our region, the Nicola River @ Merritt and Coldwater River @ Brookmere are at 10-year to 20-year low flows, the lowest water levels, along with Vancouver Island, in the province. The Nicola Watershed Community Round Table is trying to help the Min. of Environment get word out about the situation. With these low flows, fish will be under a great deal of stress. And less surface flow means higher water temperatures and decreased water quality. The NWCRT surmises that if the Nicola watershed, and in particular the valley bottoms, don’t get a significant amount of precipitation soon, there is a very real likelihood that those with surface water licenses, such as ranchers, may be required to limit how much water they can withdraw from streams and rivers. This will result in economic losses for those businesses & the region. This year’s water supply & streamflow conditions highlight the need for the NWCRT’s water use management plan, a long but crucial process that has been in the works for the past 4 years. Having sufficient water for today's and tomorrow's needs cannot be taken for granted. It is essential that everyone does their part to conserve as much water as possible, and use the resource wisely.

The NV Midget Lacross Team is holding a “drop off’ bottle drive on Friday, July 10 & Saturday, July 11, 10am-4pm. There will be 2 locations: Sanders & Co.’s entrance driveway & Jackson’s container site entrance in Collettville. All proceeds go towards the travel & accommodation expenses when the team goes to Langley for the Provincials July 22-25.

Bullfest fundraiser for NV Pro Rodeo

On Saturday July 11, 2pm the Rodeo Assoc. will hold their 2nd Bullfest event at the rodeo grounds. This year, they’ve added an additional $4000 in prizes. Tickets $15 at the door.

Lawn painting and tack sale

There’s lots going on Saturday, July 11, at the Old Courthouse, 1840 Nicola Ave. Lawn Painting (en plein air painting) begins at 10am and the public is invited to watch Valley Visual artists at work for as long as they & the weather hold.
