A Thousand Clowns

The Social Planning Housing Committee in Merritt is working at setting up a cold weather shelter in response to the government’s new “Out of the Cold” legislation. While still in the early stages of planning, a volunteer information training session is being set up with ASK Wellness and Kamloops volunteers, to help pepare Merritt for its own shelter. If anyone is interested, please attend a meeting to be held on Monday, Dec. 7, 5pm at the Civic Center. At age 17 Herb had a play staged in New York; at 19 he had created the massive hit cartoon phenomenon The Nebbishes (the 1950s equivalent of The Simpsons); by 24 he had a published novel; and before his 28th birthday A Thousand Clowns was a hit on Broadway, earning him a Tony nomination for best play, and the New York Drama Critics “Best New Playwright” award. A movie was made of Clowns in 1965, earning him an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay, and the Writer’s Guild Award for best screen comedy. 2,503 Years Old A tourist is traveling with a guide through one of the thickest jungles in Latin America, when he comes across an ancient Mayan temple. A recent report has said that salvage logging of dead pine is creating large openings in central BC, and that government needs to ensure areas are set aside for biodiversity and wildlife before salvage logging of mountain pine beetle timber clears the forests close to roads and communities. At least 7 very large openings have emerged on the landscape through a series of relatively isolated but wellintentioned decisions about where to place individual salvage cutblocks. These large openings have much less old forest reserved from logging than was recommended by BC's chief forester. The government will have to act quickly to ensure it is not logged as the salvage effort proceeds, and as other uses for the wood, like bioenergy, are developed. BC's chief forester had recommended in 2004 — when the allowable annual cut was increased in central BC to help salvage the dead pine trees — that individual salvage cutblocks should include more patches of mature trees to provide a range of forest types and ages for wildlife and biodiversity and reduce flood risks. A study of an area stretching from Burns Lake through Prince George, and south to Quesnel found that, while foresters did leave more trees standing in salvage cutblocks, as recommended, it did not achieve the desired result when looking at the big picture across the landscape.
