SERVING IT UP FRESH… 3 TIMES A WEEK! MONDAY EDITION — OCTOBER 19, 2009 #1934

This Friday, October 23, the NV Community Arts Council presents one of Canada’s most beloved humourists and musician — Lorne Elliott, 7:30pm, the Capital Soundstage @ Iron Mountain Music, 2058 Granite Ave. This is Lorne’s second time in Merritt. He has performed from Newfoundland to New York City, from Los Angeles to Australia and points in between. He started performing in 1974 as a folk musician in East Coast Canada, and at the same time kept writing fiction, songs, monologues and one-liners. The outcome is a very special show of comedy & music, in a unique & wacky performance style, entertaining, and foolish enough to make everybody laugh. The timelessness of his material, and his keen observations make his work special. Lorne has performed his one-man show in theatres, universities and clubs. He has opened concerts for comedy greats, made regular appearances at comedy festivals, and hosted CBC’s Madly off in all Directions for years & years. This concert kicks off the new 20092010 concert season. For this particular show, seating is limited, and season ticket holders will be accommodated first, so get there early!

Free seasonal flu clinics for seniors

In Merritt, a free seasonal flu clinic for seniors will be held on Wed., Oct. 28 9:30am-3:30pm, at the Merritt Civic Centre, no appt necessary. “We are offering the vaccine to the elderly as they are more susceptible to serious complications and hospitalization from influenza” says Dr. Paul Hasselback, Medical Health Officer with Interior Health. “Seasonal Flu clinics for other at-risk groups will begin in early 2010, following H1N1 vaccine clinics for the general population.” The vaccine offered to seniors in October contains three strains of seasonal flu based on worldwide trends tracked by the WHO. It will not protect you against the H1N1 flu virus. “Getting the seasonal flu vaccine is a safe, effective way for seniors to stay healthy and avoid serious illness” adds Hasselback. “Hand washing and staying home when sick will also help stop spreading disease to others.”

Logical Thinking A Year 5 teacher was giving her Primary pupils a lesson in developing logical thinking. "This is the scene," said the teacher. "A man is standing up in a boat in the middle of a river, fishing. He loses his balance, falls in, and begins splashing and yelling for help. His wife hears the commotion, knows he can't swim, and runs down to the bank. Why do you think she ran to the bank?" A little girl raised her hand and asked, "To draw out all his savings?"
