Re: WoS project Volunteers needed

There appears to be some puzzlement about why so many residents spoke against the proposal for the city to take $300,000 out of the infrastructure- upgrading portion of the budget in favour of the Walk of Stars museum project. My reason for being against this community tax expenditure as well as the taxpayer cost from Federal funds is very simple. It involves the basic principle of prudent budgeting during a deepening global recession. We know it is deepening because all those in favour of the project at that meeting last week told us that we are going to lose one of our mills in the near future. That indicates to me our local economy is going to take an additional hit, deepening local recession effects. We see prices rising, wages not, so families cannot maintain their position in relation to inflation. We have also been repeatedly told that in this global downturn all nations are experiencing the same difficulties as we are in their attempts to meet their fiscal responsibilities, but are in even more trouble than we are. Prudent people trying to balance their budget in such a negative atmosphere will immediately start eliminating non-essentials so that funds are available for the necessities of life – such as rent, food, clothing, health services, etc. What will be dropped are such things as an extra car, expensive sports, and – tourism! Travel for nonessential reasons will quickly lose its attraction – and it will be worldwide. Canada is reputedly being held up as one of the most fortunate countries not suffering as much as others, yet those of us on fixed incomes and middle and lower class incomes can see the writing on the wall. Balance our budgets now or face the same fate as other nations down the road. If council wishes to expand our economy, bring in private businesses that will support the tax base, not projects that drain the coffers for strangers who may or may not pass through our community. That is why I support city council concentrating on infrastructure and services to local residents who pay the taxes. Bev Veale

60-second sermon

Righteousness is not born in us. David, the man after God’s own heart, recognized that he was conceived in sin. He said in Psalm 51:5, “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful even from the time my mother conceived me.” Everyone from birth has the snares of sin in their bodies & seeds of sin in their souls. History proves the scriptures to be true. Over the past 6000 years, 3.5 billion people have been killed in wars, & there has only been 292 years of peace. Those who believe in Jesus & obey Him will be rewarded with an eternity of peace & joy with their Lord & Savior. God tells us this in His Holy Word, but do you believe Him? One of the distinguishing marks of the true children of God is that they love the truth & hate lies, because God is the Father of truth & they resemble their Father. Love does not delight in evil; it takes no pleasure in lying, injuring or hurting anyone. Love does not rejoice in the faults & failures of others, nor does it triumph over others due to pride or malice. Love takes no pleasure in the sins of others, but is delighted to see others do well & have integrity. True Christianity flourishes, where love & truth overflow. Those with the love of Christ reap great satisfaction in seeing truth & justice prevail. Guilt can help lead us to be truly sorry for our sins. God has given all of us a conscience for this reason. But God must be served first; His church supported; His Name glorified; His Kingdom come; His will done, before we think about ourselves.. Let us serve God first. We must first do our work, & then trust Him for the reward. It is impossible to please God without faith. The Lord said, “Come & see, try me, trust me & you will see the blessings that I will pour out upon you.” Are you ready to give all to the Lord, to love Him with all of your heart, mind & soul? I hope & pray that you are. The last Word •Righteousness is not born in us. •Guilt can help us to be truly sorry for sin. •Believe & obey God for an eternity of peace & joy. •Serve God first, support His church, glorify •Children of God love the truth & hate lies. His Name, •God is the Father of truth. •His Kingdom come, His will be done. •Christianity flourishes, with love & truth. Love the Lord with all of your heart, mind & soul. —Pastor John Rankin, Merritt Baptist Church, 378-2464, [email protected]
