Last-minute Christmas art shopping

There’s a unique Christmas shopping opportunity on now at the Courthouse Art Gallery, until December 19th. Shirley Sauviat has curated an impressive show & sale with Christmas gift-giving in mind. Shirley is shining in her role as temporary curator — you’ll remember her as an artist herself, having exhibited with Bev Veale and Miriam Loken just last month with vibrant, expressionist paintings. Shirley has beaten the bushes, and put together a show/ sale of new works by Cindilla Trent, Sylvia Boyd, Heidi Kohler, among others, and old favourites from Bev Veale. There are paintings, carvings, cards & gift baskets for every price range. Truly worth a look, open Thurs. 4-8pm, Fri & Sat., 10-4pm.

"The crisis is now," said BC rancher Matt Williams, who grazes 1600 Angus cattle on 16 hectares of land in Merritt. "We are receiving a significant amount of money less than our costs of operation," Williams said in an interview with CBC News. "And that's every single ranch in operation within BC." The National Farmers Union is calling for Ottawa to investigate beef pricing, saying ranchers are selling cows and cattle at record low rates even as hamburger prices rise in grocery stores. And a separate report by the BC government has found ranchers here are struggling and need help to boost their bottom line. Williams said that 10 years ago, he was able to make a profit raising cattle and selling them at market value. But not now. "On our particular operation, we're well over $1 — about $1.30 — a pound to raise them," he said. "And this fall I received below 95 cents. We're losing money. We're looking at every single aspect of trying to survive in an extremely difficult marketplace." The report commissioned by the BC on government and released Wednesday found that ranchers in the province are struggling, and pegged boosting international sales as the route back to profitability. It notes that in the past, ranchers have been able to offset down periods with revenues from the sale of timber from their land. The industry has been hit hard over the last 6 years by the recession, multiple droughts, risking costs for energy and feed, the strong Canadian dollar and export restrictions caused by the threat of mad-cow disease. BC's beef cattle industry has shrunk by 1/3 since 2003, the sharpest decline in Canada. "Without a doubt, we must broaden our marketplace, there no question," Williams said. "I think everyone agrees. But that's not going to solve our immediate crisis, which is today." —www.cbc.bc.ca

The last public mass flu clinics in Interior Health are being held next week until December 18th. In Merritt, a dropin clinic will be held at the Merritt Health Ctre on Wed., Dec 16, 9am-12pm and 1-3pm, 3451 Voght St. After the 18th, H1N1 vaccine and seasonal flu vaccine (if eligible) will still be available (details on how to access the vaccine in your area will be posted on the IH website — www.interiorhealth.ca — weekly or by calling your local health centre.) Vaccine is also available at many doctors’ offices, walk-in clinics, and some pharmacies. The H1N1 flu virus continues to circulate and Interior Health says the best way to protect yourself and those around you for the rest of the flu season is to get immunized as soon as possible.

When Snails Attack A sloth named Herman is walking through the forest one day. A gang of snails approach him and beat him up. He is left at the bottom of a tree with several cuts and bruises. Several hours later, he gathers up enough strength to go to a local police station. Herman walks into the sergeant's office. "What happened to you?" the officer asks. "A gang of snails beat me up," Herman replies. "Can you describe what they looked like?" "I don't know," the sloth says. "It all happened so fast."

Celebrate-a-Life

Merritt & District Hospice invites you to place a tag on their Christmas tree to honour a loved one's memory. Christmas is a time for family and friends and a time when a loved one's loss is felt even more keenly. Stop by the Celebrate-a-Life tree at Extra Foods Saturday & Sunday Dec. 12 & 13, or Dec.19 & 20. Volunteers will be at the tree on the Saturdays from 11am5pm, and on the Sundays 12noon-4pm. The hospice is dedicated to supporting the terminally ill and the grieving, and will once again provide the opportunity to remember loved ones during their annual Celebrate-a-Life campaign. Hospice consists of caring trained volunteers working in cooperation with the family physician and other members of the health care team to offer support to those with a terminal illness and their family and to those grieving a loss. Volunteers listen carefully, respect confidentiality, visit homes, hospital, and nursing home, provide companionship for clients and their families, offer time out for family members, and offer bereavement support individually or in the “Living With Loss” support group. There is no charge for this service. All funding comes from donations, bequests and local fundraising. FMI, Merritt Hospice at 280-4040.
