It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Norman Douglas Dixon at the age of 91. Norman was born July 13, 1918, in Greenwood, BC to Sanford & Lois Dixon. The Dixon family moved to Merritt in 1921 and Norman & family have lived in the Nicola Valley for most of the time since then. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings, and in March 2005, his beloved wife of 65 years, Marion (Barrett) Dixon. Norman and Marion had 2 children: Donna (Bob) Schmidt and Lloyd Dixon. He has 5 grandchildren: Colin (Annette) Schmidt and Karen (Bill) Miller. Mark Dixon, Loren Dixon and Brenda (Tyler) Dvorak. Norman also has 9 great-grandchildren and 12 nieces and nephews. In 1943 Norm volunteered in WW II and became a sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Force, landing in France 11 days after D-Day. He served in Belgium, Holland and Germany as a radio operator. After returning to Merritt in 1947, Norm operated a local radio shop and managed the Overwaitea for a short time. Norman was the Merritt Post Master for 37 years, retiring in 1981. In retirement, Norm enjoyed playing golf and reading. He loved to putter with his large selection of tools and was always “fixing” or creating something. He was also a certified locksmith. Norman was a very social man, loved company and loved to talk and tell stories; he had a great sense of humour right up to the end. He was a fine, hard-working, community-minded man and upstanding citizen, always ready to help anyone in need; he would go above and beyond. Norm was involved with the original building of the NV Memorial Arena and one of the founding members of the Interior Savings Credit Union. He was a wonderful husband, father, a good friend and neighbour; was a true gentleman and liked to be well-dressed with his hat always “just right”. Norman will be deeply missed by family and friends. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of Nicola Meadows, Gillis House & Dr. Smit for their compassionate support and care. A memorial gathering will be held in the spring, date to be confirmed. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Norman's name to Nicola Meadows, Gillis House or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
