Thousands lined downtown streets for Merritt’s light-up parade on Friday evening, one of North America’s biggest night-time Christmas parades. Community Futures’ fairy tale float took the award for best overall of the 67 floats entered. Mar-King Logistics won the award for best lights. NV Evangelical Free Church won best theme. The award for originality went to Yaki Joe’s Pizza, with CFNV, Kolors Cutting Lounge, and NV Explorers tied for runner-up. Bench Elementary won for enthusiasm & came 2nd for best school spirit. Special guests were Quatchi, Sumi & Miga, and a marching band all the way from Vancouver. Thanks for joining the fun!

HVC hiring The Highland Valley Copper Teck

Partnership will continue to hire in the coming months as it seeks to expand the mine & extend its life beyond 2019. Nearly 40 new workers have been hired recently, and the trend is expected to continue, for a total of 150-180 new people over the next 18 months. With an aging workforce, 250 workers are expected to retire in the next five years. By the time they’re done, they expect to end up with close to 1100 unionized employees, just shy of 1988’s peak of 1,172. High copper prices — more than 3 times the rate of 10 years ago — makes it feasible to expand production into areas of less copper concentration. Drivers of the giant haul trucks are expected to be in high demand.

Funding for NVIT healthcare students

NVIT will receive $118,476 to provide spaces for students studying to be health care assistants. It’s part of the province’s $614,385 investment at post-secondary institutions in 6 rural communities to train 82 health care assistants who will provide front-line care in small communities. 34 of these 82 spaces are targeted to Aboriginal learners at Vancouver Island University and NVIT, 18 of which will be here in Merritt, to help build health care capacity in Aboriginal communities. The programs will train health care assistants to provide care that promotes and maintains the physical, emotional, cognitive and social well-being of clients. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be prepared to work in any level of continuing care, including home support, adult day care, assisted living, and complex care.

St. Michael’s Service of Lessons, Carols

A Service of Lessons and Carols will be held Sun., Dec, 6, 7pm. The program for this service was developed in the early 1900's to provide The Story and The Songs in preparation for the Christmas Season. 7 Bible stories/lessons are read and 7 Christmas carols are sung. Cecilia Dyck's piano students will be playing the church piano that evening. There will be a coffee and cookie time after the 50-minute service, in the church hall. They are also collecting hats, mittens, gloves & scarves for St. Michael’s Mitten Tree. Collected items will be passed out during the Soup Bowl days of Tuesday and Friday to those in need. The program will take place in the Thompson Interior Mobile Training trailers, two 53 foot trailers fully outfitted as dedicated welding shops and classroom. 60-second sermon

It is common for those of the world to be stubborn & conceited. They may insist on their good opinion of themselves despite rebukes from the Word of God, and from their own conscience. Similarly, there are many that proclaim their love for the Lord, but have no true love in their hearts, & no concern for their souls. Those that do not worship God in Spirit and truth, do not worship Him at all! How sad. But praise the Lord! He is true to His Word. And He will not fail us, even if everything around us fails. The victory is already won for those who put their faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. Those who know the Lord stay close together; speak kindly; preserve & promote mutual love; both for the Lord & one another. They build one another up in faith & holiness. They speak a new language of love, the language of heaven. They truly reverence & love the Lord. But they are on guard against seducers that come looking to deceive vulnerable souls. Fearing the Lord, is the beginning of wisdom. Reverence His majesty & submit to His authority. Dread His righteous anger. Humbly comply with God & never speak harshly against Him. Meditate on His Holy Word; pray; & worship, so that you can know Him better, & draw closer to Him. Those who love the Lord must serve Him out of a sense of love & delight. If we serve with affection, obedience & faith in Christ, God will spare us with tenderness & compassion. Christ will strip away any disguises & receive only those who truly love Him. If our heart is true, we will be delivered from death & welcomed into everlasting glory. Christ knows your heart. Make sure it is in the right place. God remembers the services of His people like they were written in a book. On that great last day, Christ will return with the sound of trumpets & gather up His children. They will be His precious possessions, like jewels in His crown. On that glorious judgement day He will say, “Well done, good & faithful servants.” And God will reward His people in heaven with the gift of sharing His glory. Where is your heart; your true love?
