Motorists on the R36 road from Ohrigstad to Hoedspruit got a nasty surprise last week Friday when they found that they could not proceed on the Abel Erasmus pass because of hundreds of rocks and stones in the road. The rocks and stones in the road were the culmination of the dragging conflict between unhappy residents of villages in the Echo Caves and Leboeng area who threatened the Greater Tubatse Municipality with this protest action during a march in Burgersfort recently. They handed a memorandum to the municipality concerning their grievances, which include inter alia a lack of electricity and, water supply problems and the condition of access roads to villages. The municipality answered them by means of a letter earlier last week, but they were not happy with the answers. Problems started last week Thursday when villagers of Makgalane and Ga-Sepeke marched to the municipal councillor’s house, threatening to set his posessions alight. The Police rushed to the scene to calm the situation, and ordered the group to disperse, but they failed to do so, instead resorting to blocking some of the access roads to some of the villages. The Police warned them of possible arrest, but they did not give attention, whereafter 10 people were arrested. Early on Friday protesters from Leboeng (New Stands), and Mapareng proceeded to block the R555 to graskop and the R36 with stones and burning tires. In the course of friday and Saturday the Police proceeded to arrest another 64 people, locking them up in the cells at Leboeng and Ohrigstad Police stations. When Platinum Gazette visited the

scene on friday Police and members of the public wishing to travel on the R36 was busy clearing the road by hand. No protester was in sight, and the hundreds of stones almost stretched to the Police station at Leboeng. As far as could be determined some of the protesters were already arested, while the Police were still searching for the others. They stayed in the cells untill Tuesday, when all of them appeared in the Magistrate’s court at Leboeng (top left photograph). A large group of family and relatives were waiting outside under trees for the court appearance of their relatives who appeared in court in two batches. MThey were not asked to plead and received bail ranging free bail to R400. They will all appear in court again in November. Platinum Gazette visited Mapareng on Wednesday. Some of the villagers told the newspaper that they were tired of being treated like children and that they urgently need the municipality to give attention to their problems. They say just one example of the the problems that they experience is the fact that the municipality still want to find out about Eskom’s capacity in the area. Pointing to the electrical supply lines runnuing over the village they say “we talked to Eskom, the capcity is there, they just need money from the municipality. We live under the lines, it is just to get it in the houses”. They vowed not to stop their protest, until they got some satisfactory anwers from the municipality. As far as the newspaper could determine, efforts to get the protesters and the municipaluity together to talk to each other, was under way at the time of going to press.

In the top photograph the pens of the Greater Sekhuhune District Municipality, Mogobo David Magaba (left), Limpopo Premier, Cassel Mathale and Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor, Ralepane Mamekoa (right) are not still for a moment as they take note of the concerns of representatives of various stakeholders at Friday’s Provincial Exco outreach at Penge. Ironically, when all the action happened at Leboeng last week Friday (see previous page), the Provincial Government held an Exco outreach at Penge on the same day, at roughly the same time, attended by all the most important political office bearers in the province, district and municipality. Limpopo Premier, Cassel Mathale and members of the Procincial Executive Committee and district and local leaders visited several places in the area, making sure of the progress with service dilvery and giving attention to other areas of concern, wherafter a public imbizo was held where respresentatives of various organisations got the opportunity to air their problems. The event at the Penge sports groundfs was well attended and people from all over the Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality travelled to Penge.

Cigarette smugglers still a problem ‘Stadig oor die klippe’ While having their hands full with service delivery protesters in the Leboeng area last week Friday, the rocks and stones in the road maybe contributed to something good when traffic could not drive on the R36. It gave Leboeng Police the opportunity at roughly 11:00 to stop a brown Toyota Camry. Two Zimbabwean nationals, aged 28 and 30 where in the car. The Police searched the vehicle and found 788 cartons of illegal cigarettes in the car. The men were arrested and the cigaresttes were confiscated. The cigarettes is worth about R78 000. R14855 in cash were also found with the men. They men were charged with possession of counterfeit goods. They were to appear in the Leboeng Magistrate’s court on Tuesday 2009-10-27.

Joshua Generation golf day a success On Saturday, 24 October as part of the Oktober Beer Fest the Joshua Generation golf day took place. It was well supported with 22 four ball teams entered. The heat took it’s toll on most of the players, but one and all tried their luck to hit a hole-in-one at the ninth hole to win a bakkie. Unfortunately nobody managed this feat, many rather ending on the wrong green in their attempts to reach the hole in one shot. The team from Marula Platinum Mine was first with 98 points. Second was Sunny Pack with 84 points and Sebenza Scaffolding third with 83 points. The school thanked the following sponsors and individuals who helped with the day: TVE (Trade Vest engineering); ECM Mine; Tubatse Smelter; Sebenza; Modikwa Mine; Xstrata; Sunny Pack; G4; PLM Boerdery; OK; HF Plant; Simflex; PVT; Lukas Potgieter. Limpopo Champions Maatlopo United Football Club are now the SAFA Nedbank Cup Limpopo Champions. On 25 October they won Capricorn district champions (3-1) and the Mopani district champions (5-4). The game against Mopani district was won on penalties. “We were 2-0 down at halftime,” said Mr Jimmy Makola, the team’s public relations officer. “But, we came back strong in the second half to equalise and force the game towards a penalty shootout”. Lupa Malatjie was one of the stars of the team. They are now one step closer to reach the top 32 spots of the Nedbank Cup to play with the champions of the Nedbank Cup in the Vodacom league. “We are ready for them, and we are even aiming to reach the last 32 to play Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates. That is our dream,” said Makola. “Thanks to our players, the technical team and our loyal supporters who traveled to Seshego on 25 October,” he added. This week Maatlopo will be playing against Makgane Junior Bucks at Makgane Village. Enquiries: Jimmy Makola, 073 775 4150 or Sydney Makoka, 072 869 4418.
