An outbreak of rabies in the Marone farms area has the State Veterinary Service on high alert and actively vaccinating both dogs and cats. A jackal from the farm Glenora have been positively tested for the disease that is deadly in humans if not treated immediately. When wild animals such as jackal contracts the disease they often appear tame and as in the case of the positively tested animals, come close to humans and their homes. The owner of the farm where the jackal was killed have had experience with rabies previous and immediately suspected something was wrong when she spotted two jackals coming close to the house. The animals were shot and tests done at Onderstepoort near Pretoria confirmed what the State Veterinarian and farm owner feared – an outbreak of rabies. The other animal tested negative. When an animal with rabies bites another animal or human the disease is transmitted through the saliva. Tame animals may start acting wild and aggressive while wild animals will appear to be tame. Once an animal has contracted the disease it cannot be cured, it must be put down. When a human has contracted rabies and it is not treated immediately some of the symptoms will include hallucinations, an irrational fear of water and finally death. Dogs and cats can easily contract the disease from a wild animal and to prevent this, the State Veterinary Service is launching a massive vaccination campaign in Burgersfort and Steelpoort in the next weeks. They’ve already vaccinated more than 60 dogs and 4 cats in the Marone farm area. The team doing the vaccinations thanked the farmers of the area for their co-operation and support in trying to prevent the spread of the disease. The farmers immediately
Elshamah Motors
started contacting each other and arranging access for the teams to come and do the vaccinations. The team is now hoping that they will receive the same co-operation form people living in town. From Monday to Wednesday they will be in front of the OK Minimark, Burgersfort where people living in Aloe Ridge East, Aloe Ridge West, Leopard’s Bush, Lion’s Rock, Elephant Hill, Mooifontein and Burgersfort town can bring their cats and dogs to be vaccinated. These vaccinations are free and can protect your family pets from contracting the disease. The teams will also be mobile. So, if someone has an animal that is too big to transport, or too aggressive with other dogs, they are welcome to call one of the members of the team to do the vaccination at home. They will be at the Minimark from 11:00 – until 18:00. Residents from Ext. 10 can bring their animals to the gate of Burgersfort Clinic where the team will be stationed from 11:00 to 18:00 on Thurday, while another team will be stationed at the gate of Motaganeng Village from 11:00 to 18:00. Residents from Ext 5 can take their animals to the open ground in front of the Department of Labour from11:00 to 18:00 to have their animals vaccinated. The Steelpoort area schedule will be published in next week’s newspaper. The State Veterinary team appeals to everyone to help in this effort to save lives and to not only bring their own animals, but to also encourage their neighbours and friends to do so. Enquiries may be directed at tel 082 767 7936 or 072 553 7043 or 013 216 1093.

The facilitators say that after the course the women attending the course will be qualified to become economic active, play a role during the soccer world cup and remain economically active after that. As the Christmas season approaches, many South Africans can feel the effect of the recession on their finances. For many the stress of the coming festive season and the usual spending associated with it, is just too much. When your finally sit down and realise that your normal monthly spending and debt repayment is just too much, it is time to visit a debt counsellor. Facing the fact that your spending exceeds your income is one of the toughest parts to recovery. The second step is to visit a registered debt counsellor. By law all debt counsellors must be registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR). Since 2007 these counsellors can help consumers get out of debt. You are not alone on this journey. Figures show that more than 90 000 people in South Africa have been placed under debt review. Each case is individually reviewed and the debt counsellor will work out a repayment plan that will allow you pay your living expenses such as rent, groceries, the children’s school fees and the debt. It often happens that a couple bought a house, vehicles and other items while the economy was good and credit easy to come by. Many business owners experienced growth and did not expect the sudden vacuum of income when mines retrenched people and cancelled further contracts. Suddenly people who could affort to live the lifestyle they had, were faced with falling behind on repayments of the bond, vehicles etc. When you are under debt review your name will be flagged with SA’s credit bureaus. This means that people you owe money to, won’t be able to take legal action against you, or repossess your belongings - as long as you continue to pay the lower rate that the debt counsellor negotiated with them on your behalf. Your debt counsellor will help you draw up a budget, including accounts such as water and electricity, which cannot be placed under review.

The Aurum Institute held a soccer tournament at Ga-Manoke on Saturday 7 November. Although soccer was on the agenda, the event also served another purpose. The public and players could all visit the Aurum stall where they were weighed, had their blood pressure taken, could get a TB screening and find out their HIV status. The visitors to the stall who went to determine their HIV status also received counselling before the test. One of the areas that did very well was the couples counselling said Mr Oupa Lekhuleni, one of the organisers of the day. More than 172 people were tested and counselled over the two days. “We find that many people do not have the economic resources to regularly visit a clinic or doctor and that is why we brought the service through the tournament to Ga-Manoke,” he said on Saturday. The Aurum Institute tries to create awareness about HIV and Aids as well as many other diseases that often goes untreated when people are not screened or well informed about the disease. During this week the minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi expressed his concern about the increase of registered deaths in South Africa. This is where the work of the Aurum Institute is so important. When people know their status and what other diseases they have, it can be treated and in cases such as with TB people can be cured. This will all contribute to giving life to the people of South Africa.
Especially couples were counselled and came for testing.

What do you expect will be the For many people the 2010 FIFA World Cup creates stars with money signs in their eyes. They see a way to make money. Money from tourism, from accommodation or other services and products that goes together with such large scale event. This week we asked what our readers expect the true effect of the World Cup will be on South Africa and specifically in our area.
Mr Johannes Simelane said: “Burgersfort is too small. Polokwane will benefit but not us. Polokwane, Pretoria and Johannesburg. The people can get tenders for 2010 and be entrepreneurs”.
Mr Eric Magane said: “It will boost the economy of this country and bring stability. There will be no effect here because we have no stadiums”.
Mr Justice Malepe said: “Nothing will happen around here”.
Mr Edward Matshisevhe said: “I think this World Cup brings opportunities and in SA it will be the same as in other countries. Burgersfort is too far away. The people in Johannesburg will benefit”.
Ms Basie Ngwana said: “Burgersfort has no stadium, but maybe the people will come for accommodation. Many people will find a job for a short period of time”.
Mr Bennett Milanzi said: “It will have an impact. The fans will spend money”.
Mr Caswell Khumalo said: “Those who will get development are those cities with the stadiums. The tourists will just pass through here. They will not buy groceries in the shops. They will buy a juice and leave. They also want you to register with government if you want to sell at the stadiums - now only government will benefit and not the people.
Mr Jack Makofane said: “The business is slow at the moment. It will get better everywhere when the World Cup starts”.
Mr Themba Malebe said: “I believe nothing will happen here”.
Ms Ntsoakie Moroa said: “It will have and impact because we are close to Polokwane and Nelspruit. Burgersfort is rich because of the Platinum. People will want to invest and then we won’t have to suffer like now”.
Talk to us! SMS your opinion on the subject to 073 416 5119.
Mr Simon Lokweng said: “There will be an impact on South Africa. People will make money. We are a two hour drive from Polokwane and a two hour drive from Nelspruit. So the people will drive through Burgersfort. People will want to see the mines and how our people live”.

Mr solly Dube said; ‘Not around Burgersfort. Maybe something will happen in the big cities and in tourism places”.
MrAlfredo Lekatosity said: “A lot of people are expecting much from governement. The lowest villages are barely civilised without services. We expect them to promote and develop for next year”.
Ms Gladys Shai said: “Next year with the World Cup they must create jobs, especially afterwards we want to see more jobs. The World Cup will bring money into the country”.
