The good

The Bad

As a matter of convention, the US dollar-South African rand exchange rate is expressed in rand per dollar. Thus an decrease in this rate indicates an increase in the value of the rand versus the dollar.

EISH!

Good news for Burgersfort and environs is that the platinum price on international markets is steadily on the rise, albeit very slowly. With the large number of platinum mines in the area, this should be good news, as Anglo Platinum’s CEO told the media earlier this year “We are looking at a price of more than $1300 an ounce”. That is now happening and as readers will see on page two of the newspaper, there is enough interest to open up more mines in the area. Mr Nicolau was at the time he made the statement, not too happy about the strenghtening of the rand versus the US dollar, as it negates the higher price paid for platinum when exchanged for rand. The rand remains strong, as can be seen in the bottom graph, not playing into the hands of platinum miners. What is also happening is that the biggest consumer of platinum, the international automotive industry, is still in trouble and demand for the metal is still low. On the other hand ferrochrome producers is almost in full production, although the price remains low, furnaces is in operation and retrenchments has stopped. Analysts is of the opinion that although the economy shows signs of life, the uptake will be very slow. So it seems if the current local slump will follow the national trend.

Booysendal Nkwe also on the move... Platinum Mine a Northam announces reality development Northam Platinum Ltd has announced it would start construction on the Booysendal platinum mine by early 2010 and the first phase would cost about R3 000 million. Booysendal is roughly situated between Mototolo and Everest platinum mines in the triangle between Steelpoort, Lydenburg and Roossenekal. Northam, a unit of black owned Mvelaphanda Resources, owns the deepest platinum mine in the world and is saying that the development of the vast new Booysendal mine will expand its production options. The company said in a statement on the JSE that it had completed a feasibility study for Booysendal, which could more than double Northam Platinum’s output, pushing it to rank fourth after the world’s third-biggest platinum producer, Lonmin Plc. Glyn Lewis, the company’s chief executive says “Our intention remains to fund the project through a combination of a rights issue, internal retentions (own cash) and medium-term bank debt”. “Booysendal is living up to our expectations and is likely to be a

significant, long-life producer, and one of the new-generation PGM (platinum group metals) mining projects of the future.” Lewis said the first phase or module of the project could give rise to sales of some 130 000 ounces of mainly platinum and palladium, rhodium, gold a year, rising by a further 115 000 ounces per annum from the second phase, to a total of 245 000 ounces for both phases. The first phase of the project’s life-ofmine is expected to exceed 20 years, during which period further production expansions would be developed. Lewis said South Africa’s power utility, Eskom has undertaken a feasibility study for a new substation to be situated on the Booysendal property. Northam Platinum is the only fully independent black-owned platinum group metal producer listed on the JSE. Northam will begin the construction of an access road and water pipeline and start the boxcut for the module 1 onreef decline in the first half of 2010. First concentrate from module 1 is anticipated in 2013, reaching full production in 2015.

Australian Stock Exchange listed International Goldfields (IGC) has signed a formal asset sale agreement with fellow listed Nkwe Platinum to sell its 15 percent stake in its Tubatse project for $60 million Australian dollar. The companies announced in June that Nkwe would acquire the stake, which will boost its interest in the Tubatse project to 74 percent. IGE and Nkwe had an option agreement in place since late 2008, that enabled Nkwe to negotiate on an exclusive basis to acquire IGC ‘s stake in the three farms that made up the Tubatse project. Nkwe holds a joint-venture option agreement with Xstrata to jointly develop the Tubatse-Garatau project, with the bigger company having an option to fund the development of two mines and a concentrator, with a stated goal of producing one-million ounces of PGMs a year. The Tubatse project currently had a joint ore reserve committee complaint resource of about 45-million ounces of three platinum elements, and gold. The project is in the same area as the Modikwa and Marula Platinum mines. Recently some controversy surrounded the project locally when the community in the area staged a march in front of Nkwe Platinum’s premises in Steelpoort, saying the company’s controlling shareholder, Genorah Resources, has reneged on agreements with the community while the company was busy with the bankable feasability study in the area on communal land. As far as can be determined the bankable feasability study is still under way.

All quiet for six months TheUK Takeover Panel Executive has imposed a deadline of 17:00 on 20 October 2009, by which time Xstrata plc must, unless the Takeover Panel Executive consents otherwise, either announce a firm intention to make an offer for Anglo American under Rule 2.5 of the UK Takeover Code (the “Code”) or announce that it does not intend to make an offer for Anglo American. If Xstrata announces that it does not intend to make an offer for Anglo American, Xstrata and any person acting in concert with it will, except with the consent of the Takeover Panel Executive, be bound by the restrictions contained in Rule 2.8 of the Code for six months from the date of such announcement. Earlier this year Xstrata has proposed ha merger of equals with Anglo American, which was subsequently rejected by Anglo American. Anglo has welcomed the ruling of the Takeover Executive, saying the period of uncertainty around the issue should come to an end.

On 2 October the Tubatse Police received a tip-off about a person in possession a water pump in Ga Mashamothane. The Police made follow-ups and managed to find the suspect and the pump with an estimated value of R6000. The suspect was arrested and the pump was confiscated pending further investigations. The suspect appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 5 October 2009. He was not granted bail. In the photograph sergeant EF Morena and inspector FT Mogane poses with the pump.

Interesting to know * The current economic slump is the worst in South Africa in 17 years. * Of 17 million workers in South Africa about 500 000 lost their jobs during the first half of this year. * South Africa had for the first time in more than 15 years three consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. * 13 Million people are currently receiving social grants in South Africa. Ms. Charlotte Shaku said: “I don’t think it is getting better”.

Ms. Lindiwe Ncube said: “I believe that there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel”.

“Dit gaan nog nie beter nie. Ons is 6 maande agter met die resessie. Terwyl die dollar verswak bly die uitvoere sleg. Daar is nog baie mense wat afbetaal word. Die kinders ly die ergste daaronder,” sê mnr. Anton Opperman.

Golfers ‘rest in peace’ On Saturday, 3 October the ‘Rest in peace’ golf day took place at Tubatse Chrome Club. A large group of players participated in this fun event. Each player received a small cross with a tag with his or her name on it. The player’s handicap was added to the par and this gave each player the amount of strokes they would have before planting their cross and walking off the course.

Winterveld Village, Steelpoort Navrae/Enquiries:072 472 4073 School fee: R500 per month

For the fans Lydenburg – Platinum Gazette, just like many rally fans in the area, pitched early in Lydenburg last week Saturday to catch a glimpse of the Toyota Dealer 400 rally, which form part of the ABSA off road series. And what a glimpse it was! The photographs were taken early, but for the teams it was a long day. The Donaldson Nissan Navara team got back to winning ways when South African champions Duncan Vos and Ralph Pitchford won a thrilling SP Class battle in the Production Vehicle category. Nissan were beaten for the first time in six outings last time out at the Highveld 400, but bounced back in fine style with Vos and Pitchford scoring their fifth win of the season. In the closest finish of the year the Nissan pair were only 24 seconds ahead of Castrol Toyota Hilux crew Hein Lategan and Chris Birkin. Third were Ivar Tollefsen and Quin Evans, in a second Donaldson Nissan Navara, with Anthony Taylor/Robin Houghton (Castrol Toyota Hilux) and Hannes Grobler and Juan Mohr, in a third Donaldson Nissan Navara, fourth and fifth respectively. The top eight were rounded out by the factory diesel Ford Racing Ranger of Neil Woolridge/Kenny Skjoldhammer, the SP Laser Nissan Navara of Alfie Cox/Jurgen Schroder and the RFS Toyota Hilux of Chris Visser and Japie Badenhorst. In the closest finish anyone can remember in the

SP Class era, the top eight cars were covered by less than six minutes. The unlucky crew were Taylor and Houghton who won the Friday prologue to determine race start positions. They started 46 seconds ahead of the three Donaldson Nissans but quickly lost the lead when they picked up a puncture. Then, on the last of the three laps that made up the race, Taylor and Houghton were right on the tail of Vos and Pitchford. A determined effort to get past the Nissan ended when the Toyota picked up another puncture. “It was a final fling from us on a rocky section with no dust,” said Taylor. “The second puncture was the end. “After changing the wheel we could not get the car started and that dropped us further back.” Lategan and Birkin mounted a late challenge that momentarily raised Toyota hopes. But they were to run out of race distance in what was their best performance of the season. There was also a tight finish in Class D where Dewald van Breda and Johann du Toit, in the Northam Toyota Hilux D4D, finished just 14 seconds ahead of local Mpumalanga crew Johan and Werner Horn in the Malelane Toyota Land Cruiser. The win saw van Breda and du Toit move a step closer to the Class D championship. Third were Coetzee Labuscagne and Johan Gerber (Raysonics Nissan Hardbody) with early championship leader Cliff Weichelt, now partnered by Johann

Smalberger in the N1 4x4 Toyota Hilux D4D, salvaging valuable driver championship points with fourth place. There were only two classified finishers in Class E with Leeroy Poulter and Rob Howie, in the Ferodo Nissan Hardbody, finishing one minute ahead of reigning champions Jannie Visser and Joks le Roux in the RFS Toyota Hilux. With the 4x4 Megaworld Toyota Hilux entries of Deon Venter/Ian Palmer falling by the wayside, Visser and le Roux move into the championship lead with one event to go. Veterans Nardus Alberts and Geoff Minnitt struck a massive blow for the older generation when they won Class A in the Special Vehicle category. It was the biggest surprise of the season with Alberts and Minnitt, in the Wrapsa BAT, came home ahead of the Regent Racing BAT crewed by Mike Whitehouse and Mathew Carlson. Whitehouse and Carlson were around five minutes behind Alberts and Minnitt with Naeem Moosajee and Feroz Doodha Moultson (Tyre Rack Jimco) maintaining their 100 percent finish record with third place. Fourth and fifth were Nick and Ryan Harper, in the Atlas Copco BAT, with Mark Corbett and Rudi Balzer fifth in the Century Racing CR1 4x4. It was the first finish for the CR1 in 15 starts, with Corbett and Balzer having to overcome a disastrous Friday prologue to determine race start positions. The big surprise was a first non finish for the Motorite Revo1 4x4 in the hands of newly crowned South

African champions Evan Hutchison and Achim Bergmann. A high speed encounter with a rock that led to major suspension damage sidelined the new champions. Two other fancied crews also fell by the wayside. Gearbox problems sidelined Highveld 400 winners Gerhard du Plessis and Ferdie Seegers, with a mechanical problem putting paid to Toyota 1000 Desert Race winners Shameer Variawa and Siegfried Rousseau in the Total Porter. The Class P honours went to KwaZulu-Natal crew Don Thompson and Hjalmar van Gesselen (Zarco) who overcame a disappointing prologue to lead home the KEC BAT in the hands of Johan van Staden and James Rossouw. At the finish only 17 seconds separated the two cars. Third were reigning champion Johan and Etienne Bezuidenhout in the Adenco BAT. With David and Gary White (Ruwacon BAT) among the non finishers it was a result that saw the Bezuidenhout brothers reignite their championship hopes. The Class B honours went to Derrick du Toit and substitute co-driver Steve Harris in the Orange Tree BAT. It was du Toit’s fourth win in a row with the Makenete brothers, Keith and Andrew, trailing in around 12 minutes behind the winners.Third were John Telford and Jaco Swart in the Calcamite Zarco Lite. With one event remaining, the RFS 400 in the Magaliesberg, du Toit can now not be beaten in the Class B championship. (Info supplied by Motorsport South Africa Off Road Car Racing Commission)
