A storm that swept the Burgersfort and Steelpoort areas last week Friday, caused huge damage. It seems that if the Longtill, Tukakgomo area suffered more damage than other areas with whole houses swept away. Guided by Xstrata (Lion) Community Development Officer, Mr Peter Mathunyane, the newspaper visited the area on Monday, First stop was the new, almost finished International Pentecostal Church building next to the clinic. The building was constructed by Xstrata when the congregation was moved from a stand where a multipurpose community centre is to be build. The new church building is next to the clinic in the area. The storm tore up the building and broke the rafters, ceiling and walls like a toy, smashing the roof into the nextdoor clinic yard, twisting roofing plates around poles, leaving only a ruin. Luckily the clinic suffered only mionor damage.

(MBCHB (WITS)); Practice No: 0247308

Top: The new IPCC church building was completely ruined by the storm, with a piece of wood from the church’s rafters sticking through the next door clinic’s roof (right).

This concrete fence around the clinic could not contain the flying chruch roof, but managed to keep the debris away from the clinic building.

The new building was due to be handed over to the congregation early in December. Further up on the road in Mshonguvile, a number of RDP houses was swept completely from their foundations by the storm. According to one of the home owners, Mr Aaron Hlambela, his house’s roof went first. He just managed to get shelter across the street, together with his doog, Sibi wen the the whole house was reduced to rubble. The same went for Mrs Glady maepa and her family, who took shelter against the storm under an overhanging rock on the hill next to her house. Xstrata has now provided and pitched six tents as temporary shelter for families whose houses has been destroyed. Mr Mathunyane said building material will probably be donated to the families so that they can build new houses.Roofs, at various places, such as Modikwa Platinum Mine, advertising and signboards and vendor stalls over a wide area were damaged and trees were uprooted.

‘This is not service delivery’ Residents of Ga-Moraba between Leboeng and Strydom tunnel are furious. Their access road from the the R36 (the one that was blocked with stones and rocks a few weeks back) was completely washed away over the storm water pipes during last week Friday’s heavy rains in the area. Their fury is not directed at the rains, but they say they were promesed a tarred road from the R36 to their village, Leboeng and Phiring. Mr Kenneth Baloyi (left in the photograph) and Mr Hlupi Maphakge (right) say this promise has been made by the the then minister Jeff Radebe when he addressed the community at the new Leboeng Police Station back in February 2006. They and another community member, Mr Elfas Matjie, who laments that nobody can reach his shop from the R#6, says nothing came of this promise. At the end of August this year, a contractor arrived at the road, who did the storm water drainage and started with the regravelling of the road. They say the community was furious and prevented the contractor to progress further with the regravelling. The contractor then left the area at the beginning of October. They say the community’s view is that they were promised a tarred road, not a gravel one. Now the access road is completely unusable and they must take the long way through Leboeng to reach the R36. “This is not service delivery” they say.

74’s bail extended till January

The 74 people who were charged with inter alia contravening the Gatherings Act and public violence because they allegedly blocked the R36 road between Ohrigstad and Strydom tunnel a few weeks back, appeared in court in Leboeng again this week. A large number of people, including the accused gathered outside the court next to the Police station from early in the morning. The accused did not all appear in court at once, but village by village from the about seven village that participated in the protest action. Communities in these villages are unhappy about service delivery in their area, especially the lack of electricity, water reticulation, proper access roads and RDP projects. The bail of all the accused was extended and they must appear in court again in January.

Maandagshoek march on mine The Maandagshoek Community Organisation (MCO) representing members from the communities surrounding Modikwa Platinum Mine, together with the Druta Taxi Association, barricaded off the access to the mine from the R37 Polokwane/Burgersfort road on Wednesday morning, preventing the normal day shift from proceeding to work. Community members and taxi drivers proceeded to march to the mine’s main gate where they were met by amongst others, the mine’s general manager, Mr Sean O’ Connor. Employees being transported by cars and busses could not access the mine as the taxis completely blocked off the road. The Police maintained a strong presence on the scene. The march proceeded peacefully and a memorandum of demands was handed over Mr O’Connor. These demands included the construction of a tar road along the D4167/D4170 route (especially the taxi association was adament on this), a project that had previously been approved, but deferred last year, when metal prices dropped dramatically. The memorandum also demands that a report about the mine’s environmental system and compliance with standards be released and that an audit about established environmental practices be done; that the existing Section 21 company be reviewed as it has, according to the memorandum, failed in is objectives; that the procurement policy of the mine be reviewed as the community is of the opinion that the level of local community procurement is non-exsisting. Management was given 14 days to respond to the list of demands, although this period was changed to seven days just before handing the memorandum to Mr O’Connor. Mr O’Connor said attention will be given to the memorandum and that the mine will respond in the time specified. Normal operations at the mine resumed on Wednesday afternoon.

How concerned are you about your The State Veterinary Service this week vaccinated hundreds of animals against rabies. We asked readers how concerned they are about diseases such as rabies and the lack of a private practice veterinarian in Burgersfort. They also commented on the service they received from the State Veterinary team.

“Dit is belangrik dat daar na die diere gekyk word want ons het ook nie ‘n SPCA hier nie. Ons is baie dankbaar vir hierdie week se diens,” sê mnr JP Vorster en mnr. Renier Labuschagne.

Mnr. Arthur Loubser en me. Colleen Bessenger sê: “Ons is bly daaroor dat die span hier was. Ons wens net hier kan ‘n pet shop en ‘n veearts oopmaak. Dit is nie lekker om altyd so ver te moet ry nie”.

Me. Jenny Oosthuizen sê: “Ja ‘n mens is bekommer. Die diens hier was goed, ek is baie bly daaroor. Dit is beter as om Lydenburg toe te ry”.

“I hope there will finally come a vet here. It is about time anyway - we are a big communtiy. But many people are too cheap to take their animals to the vet. That’s reality,” said Ms. Kerrilyn Govender.

Mnr Stephen Oberholzer sê: “Dié is wonderlik! Ek het nie geweet hondsdolheid is ‘n probleem nie”.

Me. Stefanie Koekemoer sê: “Ek is baie bly oor dié diens. Ons sukkel gewoonlik met veeartse”.

Mnr. Stephan Lotz sê: “Dis ‘n goeie ding dat hulle hier is. Hoekom is hier nie ‘n veearts op die dorp nie?”
