NEWS
Dilokong plant commissioned ASA Metals successfully commissioned its new 600 000 ton per annum pelletising and sintering plant during July 2009 with the first sintered pellets produced at 12:20 on Sunday the 12 July. The successful commissioning of the pelletising and sintering plant signifies the achievement of the first major milestone in ASA Metals’ expansion project. The plant will beneficiate chromite concentrate into pellets that will be supplied to ASA Metals’ new furnaces. The utilization of pellets in the new furnaces will boost overall charge chrome production capacity to around 400 000 tons per year. Mr Herman Smit, COO of ASA Metals, says the construction and commissioning of the plant proceeded according to plan. “My expectations were definitely exceeded and I think the team involved in this project needs to be congratulated. I would also like to thank ASA Metals’ employees for the effort and input that went into ensuring that this project was successful. It is important to acknowledge that time spent with family was sacrificed during the last couple of months to ensure the in time completion of the project. The management at ASA Metals appreciates this and would like to thank employees’ families for their patience and support. I believe that we have achieved something special here which would not have been possible without a joint effort and continued good will. It is somewhat unfair to single out individuals that played a
major role during such a big project, but a special word of appreciation should go to Kleinjan du Toit (Expansion Manager), Juan du Preez (Senior Project Manager) and Lukas Pieterse (Raw Material Processing Manager) who managed this project on behalf of ASA Metals.” The pelletising and sintering plant is scheduled to ramp up to full production by the end of the calendar year. ASA Metals has started during January 2008 with an extensive development program to increase their ferrochrome production capacity with 300 percent. This development programme, called Project Sunrise, included the design and construction of a 600 000 ton per year pelletising and sintering Plant as well as two 66 MVA closed furnaces, each with its own pre-heaters. It is envisaged that the first Furnace will be commissioned towards the middle of August 2009 and that the second furnace will be commissioned by the end of October 2009 well within the time schedule, budget and safety objectives. The Project Sunrise team is exceptionally proud of their safety achievements of which the most important one is the achievement of 3,5 million lost time injury free ((LTIF) hours and are still going strong to increase this to over 4 million. This is an excellent achievement if one considers that there were more than 2800 construction workers on site during the peak times of which more than 35 percent came from the local communities.
LTIF was 306 697 when the first and only lost time injury accurse. An employee were carrying a beam and walking backwards when he tripped over another piece of metal and broke his ankle. The total hours for project as on 26 July 2009 were 920 745. The total project
sunrise LTIF is 3 484 910. During the project the management team attended a three week training course in Finland. They compiled their own training modules and provided training to all controllers as well as all the field attendants.
Overview of the statistics Appointments Controllers = 16 people Field attendants = 20 people Production Foreman = 4 people Artisans = 12 people Artisan Assistants = 12 people Other = 8 people

Wildevy 4x4 Dag

Fledgling forum has problems
The recently established Greater Tubatse Business Forum held a meeting at the Greater Tubatse Municipality council chamber this week amidst an internal leadership struggle. Mr Steve Mokota said that the chairman of the Forum, Mr Mmuso Serage, was suspended last week Friday because of irregularities and misconduct. The other purpose of the meeting was to discuss the way forward regarding the relationship between small and medium business enterprises with large contractors in the area. Mr Mokota said it is the forum’s wish to engage in discussions with large contractors to explore ways in which small businesses, who are members of the forum can benefit from getting work from large businesses who can subcontract them. Regarding the leadership problem he said he was acting as chairman of the Greater Tubatse Business Forum while Mr Serage is suspended, pending an investigation into the allegations. Speaking to the newspaper after the meeting, Mr Serage said he did not receive any formal communication about his suspension. As such he regarded himself still as the chairman of the organisation. he denied any wrong doing, saying that he could prove to the members that all his actions thus far has been in the interest of the organisation. He said he will seek an appointment with the Municipal manager next week to discuss the dissent and other maaters relating to the forum.
‘Ex’ ward 23 committee member in court Mr Joseph Mohlala of Dresden was elected as a ward committee member towards the end of last year, but unfortunately the rules committee that oversees the elections, could not let Mr Mohlala be inaugurated as the quidelines for women’s equity was not followed. In terms of these guidelines a woman was needed in Mr Mohlala’s place. Since then Mr Mohlala has a problem. He says he is democratically elected and has a right to serve on the ward committee. Since then he has attended various meetings at the Municipality and, and left them on his own account in the midst of proceedings to ensure that he can take his place on the ward committee. Some of his actions has also infuriated the authorities and they claim that some of his conduct was intimidating to them and individuals. Last week Thursday Mr Mohlala arrived at Burgersfort Magistrate’s court for another case, but was soon arrested at
7
the court on a charge of intimidation relating to his efforts to let himself be heard to be recognised as a ward committee member in Dresden. Soon afterwards he appeared in court and was released on bail of R1000. The case was postponed until 19 August. So what is happening now? The rules committee has recommended to the municipal council that new ward elections be held in Dresden according to the right rules and guidelines, taking gender equality into account.
(Mr Joseph Mohlala in this article is from Ward 23, Dresden, and he was ‘elected’ as a ward committee member towards the end of last year. He should not be confused with Mr Joseph Mohlala of Ward 24 (Kgautswane) who is a ward councillor and recently appeared in court in Leboeng more than once for allegedly toting a handgun. They are two different individuals).

Ronel Breedt, Realty 1 International Property Group’s agent in the area took second place as the Best Agent Residential Units 2008 during their national awards ceremony last week Tuesday. Last year she came third. The winning agents are divided into country and city agents and Ronel fits into the country category. Only registered transactions for the year are counted to determine the best agents. “I would like to thank all my clients for their support. We hope to continue providing them with the good service we strive to give with every deal,” she said. On August 7 she will also be submitting her final projects as required for the SAQA 59097 NQF 4 qualification. This qualification will become compulsory for agents who would like to remain registered after 2011. “I am glad that there will now be a standard to ensure that client gets the best service. This will eliminate fly-by-night agents,” she explained.

Do you celebrate awareness Our calendar is full of various awareness days and months. Days on which we remember special causes and take a fresh look at challenges surrounding issues that have an impact on the majority of the population. Examples of these include Youth Month and Day, Breast Cancer Awareness Month and World Aids Day. This month we celebrate women. Their achievements, sacrifices and aspirations for a better future. We asked our readers whether they take note of these awareness days and celebrate them and what day they would add to the calendar if they had the opportunity.
Give your opinion on the subject. SMS it to 073 416 5119
“Ek vat elke dag soos hy kom en steur my nie aan die spesiale maande nie,” sê mnr. Jhonny Prinsloo.
“Ja, ek steur my daaraan. Veral dae soos Women’s Day en Cancer Awareness. As ek nog ‘n dag kon bysit sou dit Animal Awareness Day wees,” sê Me. Marlene Sadler.
Ms Yvonne Malepe said: “Yes, I celebrate these days. There should be a day to create awareness about the plight of the poor people”.
Mr Simon Ngele said: “What about the men? We’ve heard the story of the women - what about us?”
Ms Lea Ngele said: “Yes, I celebrate these days. I would add a day for the children to create awareness with regards to street kids and vulnerable children”.
Mr Joseph Mohlala said: “I celebrate it. We should become aware of street children and vulnerable children. I cannot understand how a man can hurt and rape a child”.
Mr Brian Moutonay said: “No, I don’t celebrate these days. I would like a day of technology to develop our country”.
“Awareness of child abuse and abuse of women is needed. They must extend the 16 Days of Activism to a whole month. The people running the campaigns should be serious about it - especially where it concerns the children,” said Mr Din and Ms Lindiwe Salem.
Mr Klaas Mphego and Mr Paballo Mohlala said: “We take note of these days. Without women there would not be any men. To add another day? We must make 1 September when it is Spring Day to also be Men’s Day”.

days and months?
Ms Granny Riba said: “No, I do not celebrate all of them. I would create an orphan care giver day to support and reward those looking after the children”.
Mr Jeremia Mohlala said: “I celebrate it. They must not make it one month of women. It must be the whole year. Every day you must know your woman is a woman.”
Mr John Mohlala said; I cannot celebrate Woman’s Day. It is an insult to them because there is no roads or water where I live. Nothing is good for them. I don’t want to add anything”.
Mr Matome Majela said: “I don’t really celebrate them. What I want is a Technology Day. The engineers must explain about the laws and standards recognised in the field and what they’ve contributed to become esteemed scientists”.
Mr Sandiso Vobi said: “Yes, I do. I want to say they must create a day of opportunities for the jobless to prove themselves.”
Mr Alex Molefe said: “Yes, I take note of it. Youth Day is my special day”.
Mr Nesu Maroueke said: “I would create a colour blind day. A non-racist society for a day”.
Mr Heinrich Drews sê: “Nee, ek steur my nie daaraan nie. Wat van ‘n manne dag? Aangesien daar nou al vir die vroue en almal een is”.
Dr Eric Matlakala said: “Yes, I take awareness. Dental Health Day is one I would invent. Awareness about oral health”.
Ms Nokuthula Zondi said: “Yes, it is good to make the community aware. I would start a Diabetic Awareness Day”.
Feedback on last week’s subject: While municipal workers went on strike services in many towns were not delivered. Should service delivery be outsourced? “Ons steur ons daaraan. Ja, daar moet darem ook ‘n dag af vir die manne wees,” sê mnr. Herman Grové en me. Mar-Louise van Tonder.
Alucia said: “People want to work. But they must be paid properly. Not peanuts”.

BUFC Juniors wins L’burg Juniors
Pupils from Joshua Generation’s two campuses participated in the South African Christian School Sports Association (SACSSA) zonal athletics on Saturday 1 August. The event was held at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium in Ermelo and the children braved the cold to earn themselves a place amongst the top three in many items. Those who came first, second or third (all on photographs below) will go through to the next round when they will participate in the regional round in Ermelo on 15 August.
The Burgersfort United Football Club Juniors played a match against team Barcelona (Lydenburg Juniors) on Sunday, 2 August. The match was played at Lydenburg Primary. The players performed very well, especially considering that it was the first match ever played against an outside team. During the first half the teams were very evenly matched, but during the second half the Burgersfort side showed their strength. They first scored through a penalty goal and then managed to take another goal from the side. The players of the match were Suhail Gori who scored both goals and Abdullah Amod who was the best goalkeeper. The Club is planning a tournament just after the September holidays. They are also inviting all children between the ages of 8 and 15 to join them for fun soccer games. “We are very proud of the team and they played extremely well,” said their coach Faizal Abdullah.
