On 02 December 2009 Modikwa Platinum Mine reached a remarkable safety milestone in achieving 6 Million Fatality Free Shifts. It is not many mines, which in their history can achieve this remarkable achievement, and Modikwa has joined an elite band of a few who have excelled in their safety achievements. According to the mine the beginning of this success story was back in 2006 when Modikwa achieved the fist million fatality free shifts in its history. However, on 13th April 2006 an employee tragically died on duty, but, seven months later, on the 26th November 2006 the start of the current series of consecutive million shift achievements at Modikwa continued with recording the first million fatality free. The second million followed in July 2007, the third in February 2008, the fourth in August 2008, and the fifth in March 2009. This remarkable achievement has resulted in the mine being awarded the Mine Health and Safety Council and the Department of Mineral Resources awards six times, and in September 2009 an industry award for excellence. It took the mine almost 9 months to achieve its sixth million consecutive fatality free shifts and equates to 44 months without a fatal injury for the mine. “We are truly setting a benchmark for the platinum mining industry! Only our employees’ and contractors’ unconditional commitment to our total compliance to safety strategies, and the dedication shown by them towards the elimination of unsafe acts and conditions has made this possible”, said Mr. Sean O’Connor, Business Leader of the Mine. He further stated that Modikwa’s core ideology “Caring for our people” coupled to a zero mindset towards injuries, prevention of reoccurrence of injuries, and set safety standards and rules is the foundation that is taking Modikwa to the forefront in injury prevention. The mine’s goal is to prevent not only fatalities but also injuries as a whole. This exceptional achievement of 6 million fatality free shifts was celebrated with a road show by the leadership of the mine visiting the different business areas, personally congratulating and thanking every employee for their contribution. Mr Sean O’Connor, Business Leader of Modikwa Platinum Mine addressing the employees at the North Shaft bussiness area of the mine, thankinhg them for their contribution towards the achievement.

16 Days of Activism Burgersfort Police Station went big this week when they actively launched the 16 Days of Activism against Woman and Child Abuse at the morone Centre in Burgersfort on Wednesday. Tents were pitched on the parking area of the centre where people were made aware of this serious problem in society. Policeman and other servants of state, together with members of the public and the youth participated in a 5 km fun run and walk. Apun the participants arrival at the finising point at the Morone Centre, the tents were filling up with members of the public , while a Police band from Polokwane was merrily playing away under one of the tents. This band proved to be hugely popular and entertained all present, those under the tents as well as those preferring the shadows of the nearby trees. The municipality also took active part in the proceedings and the Mayor of Greater Tubatse Municipality, Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa did his part in addressing the crowd on the issue. Several senior police officers from Polokwane also visited to give impetus to their local colleagues’ efforts and various structures, such as the community policing forums did their part to make the campaign a succes.

The Mayor, Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa, (second from left, bottom) also showed his support for the campaign.

Would like to congratulate Modikwa Platinum Mine on their

6 000 000 fatality free shifts achievement. Working together for a safer mining environment.

Suprise Malebe (18) eventually won the fun run after showing the photographer how tired he is in a time of 20:13.

Christmas suprise for Driekop Aids orphans There was a surprise for the almost 200 HIV Aids orphans and their foster mothers at Driekop on World Aids Day when Thorburn Security Solutions treated them differently than previous years – the early Christmas gift this year included an Aids Day T-shirt from the company and an environmentally friendly soccer bal. The foster mothers this year also received 100 kg of maize and they also shared in the T-shirts that were available. Ellence Monyela, Steelpoort based Operational Manager for the Eastern Limb operations of Thorburn, rightfully pointed out that the weak economy in 2008/2009 caused by the recession influenced support to the People Against the Spread of HIV Aids and Starvation (PASAS) in Driekop. However the proceeds from the company’s annual charity gholf day at the Tubatse Chrome Golf Club in March 2009 relaxed a bit of the financial burden and allowed for more than in previous years. Monthly maize donations continued and will continue in 2010, Monyela confirmed. There will also be a Charity Golf Day in March 2010. The idea to “adopt PASAS” became a reality in 2007 in a joint initiative from Modikwa Platinum Mine Protection Services who introduced Thorburn management to PASAS. In his address on behalf of the Modikwa Platinum Mine management, Protection Services Leader Darren McDonald praised the HIV Aids counsellors at PASAS for their efforts and work amongst the orphans and foster parents and he also committed Modikwa to provide some form of support to PASAS. For many a HIV orphan this was an early Christmas. The challenge for the children is to find enough plastic bags to fill the soccer ball as the ball can only be used when filled with plastic.

ASA Metals - Know your status ASA Metals focussed on getting to know your HIV status on World Aids Day on Tuesday, 1 December. The Aurum Institute and Burgersfort clinic was on hand to help employees get tested and properly counselled. At an official function the COO, Mr Herman Smith encouraged the employees to participate and get to know their status. He also applauded them for the low rate of HIV positive prevalence amongst them. According to Smith only 6% of those employees tested were tested HIV positive while the average prevalence in South Africa is around 20%. He praised them for taking care of themselves and their loved ones and in turn being a strong workforce for the company. When employees get tested the results remain confidential. The only figures released to management is an amount that tested positive and an amount that tested negative. Peer educators, home-based caregivers and a motivational speaker also formed part of the day’s programme. The ASA Metals’ choir entertained the audience with items between the various speakers. Mr Herman Smith, COO encouraged employees to get to know their HIV status.

Miss Spring 2009 winners collect gifts for needy Ms Magda Reyneke and the Miss Spring 2009 winners are collecting Christmas gifts to distribute to various home-based care centres. From there it will be redistributed to Aids orphans and needy children this Christmas. “We are challenging all businesses to join forces with us,” Ms Reyneke said. They are aiming to collect 50 small gifts from each business. “Fifty might sound like a lot, but the idea is not give expensive gifts. It is to give a child the joy of opening a present and even if it is a chocolate wrapped in Christmas gift wrapping it will bring joy,” she explained. Some of the items on the list for collection include sweets such as chocolates, toiletries such as a bar of soap, linen such as face cloths or even a small blanket. The finalists will visit the various areas with centres taking care of aids orphans and hand out the gifts before Christmas. Anyone who would like to become involved or would like to make a donation is welcome to contact Ms. Reyneke on 076 579 2322.

NEWS

How true do you think is statistics showing This week the world once again took stock of how the HIV/Aids pandemic is affecting various countries and what can be done to help prevent the spread of HIV/Aids. One of the major messages was that everyone should know their HIV status. According to various sources statistics in South Africa remains shocking. An increase in the prevalance amongst people with a higher income and students were some of the statistics released. It is estimated that 10% of people in the higher income group are now testing HIV positive compared to only 8.5% in 2005. Some laboratories also found that up to 40% of new HIV positive tests are from white people. Especially university students who do not take the pandemic seriously are vulnerable. According to a report by the BBC South Africa has the world’s largest antiretroviral (ARV) programme. This will be expanded even further after president Jacob Zuma announced that all babies younger than one year with HIV will receive ARV treatment. The infection rate amongst pregnant women increased from 0,7% in 1990 to 2,3% in 2008. Most of these women are between the ages of 20 and 39 years. To boost the programmes even further the United States has given 120 million dollars to help South Africa buy more ARVs. Some of the warnings that were sounded this week was of the high mortality rate due to the infection and diseases such as TB. In 2007 an estimated 500 000 thousand people had been living with TB. It is feared that by 2015 up to 5.7 million children could have lost one or both of their parents due to Aids. Currently South Africa has 1.4 million Aids orphans. 45% on new infections during 2008 came from girls in the age group between 15 and 24 years of age. This is despite their increased knowledge of HIV and how to prevent it. In a nation of about 50 million people 5.7 million people are infected with HIV. Each year 59 000 babies are born with HIV. In South Africa 35% of the sick leave taken by employees is due to HIV/Aids and TB and 57% of all deaths of children under 5 are due to HIV/Aids and related diseases. The worst hit provinces are Kwa-Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Free State and the North West. This week we asked readers whether they believed the HIV problem is truly as big as shown in the media and if the statistics given can be true?

Left: Mr Isaiah Matebula said: “People don’t realise how big the problem is”.

“Especially university students who do not take the pandemic seriously are vulnerable”

Regs: Me. Lesley Oosthuizen sê: “Veral hier by ons is ‘n probleem. ‘n Mens weet net nie altyd daarvan nie. Dit gaan veral saam met die rokery en drugs”.

MrJulius Bhila said: “I think it’s not so bad. Certain groups like people with money are more aware because they have more resources”.

Ms Boitumelo Segale said: People are aware of the problem. The mines are doing their part to make some people aware. Maybe we need more support from the municipality. Yesterday was World Aids Day and nothing was done in town. People are afraid to come out because there is still a stigma in our area.

HIV/Aids statistics in South Africa 5.2m people with HIV 17% of people aged 15-49 HIV-positive 1.5m adults need Aids drugs in 2009 106,000 children under 15 need ARVs 413,000 new infections in 2009 59,000 of these are children Source: Statistics South Africa Where did we get this information? www.sagoodnews.co.za; www.bbc.co.uk www.plusnews.org; www.rapport.co.za www.beeld.co.za

an increase of HIV among the rich? World Aids Day - 1 December 2009

Ms Flora Mathanyela said: “It is a big problem!”

If you know it can kill you, why do you take the risk?”

Do you know your status?

Did you know? “South Africa has 1.4 million Aids orphans”

Mr Moses Malebe said: “I think people must condomise and know their status. It is a big problem. People are dying daily”.

Me. Hendrina en mnr. Willie Jacobs sê: “Dit kom meer algemeen voor as wat ‘n mens besef. Mense steur hulle nie aan hoe dit oorgedra word nie. Mense behoort meer ag te slaan”.

Mr Monty Huma said: “We don’t really consider the information. We ignore it until it touches our bodies. We are reckless. Women are of the big culprits who are scared to test and know their status”.

“45% of new infections in 2008 came from girls between 15 and 24 years”

Me.

Me. Zelna Wheeler sê: “As jy nie ingelig is nie is jy stupid. Daar is meer as genoeg resources om te weet hoe ‘n mense die virus kan kry ens. As jy nie waak nie kan jy in ‘n slaggat trap. ‘n Mens moet maar altyd versigtig wees”.
