APoLLo Blinds has started as it means to go on by wowing Wirral homeowners who have had the first glimpse of the fabulous new collections from Britain’s biggest blinds store chain. the company, which has more than 75 outlets across the uK, has just launched a new service for the Wirral peninsula and Marc McQuilliam from Apollo Blinds is delighted with the reaction from homeowners to the range of quality made-to-measure window blinds, awnings and plantation shutters. “there is no doubt that homeowners on the Wirral have been crying out for high quality window blinds products which are at the cutting edge of current home interior trends,” he said. “And if our first few weeks are anything to go by then Apollo Blinds has filled that gap and will be well on its way to becoming the number one choice for anyone who wants to use window blinds and coverings to make their homes beautiful.” Apollo Blinds has the area’s most comprehensive collection of Venetian, Vertical, Roman Roller and Conservatory blinds but it is some of the niche products that are exciting homeowners, according to Mr McQuilliam. “Plantation shutters are the fastest selling new range within the Apollo Blinds group right now because they are becoming extremely fashionable and it seems everyone wants to get their hands on them,” he said. “everyone I’ve showed our basswood shutters to has gone weak at the knees when they see the quality and beauty of our collection and they want them because they recognise just what a difference they will make to their homes. “But it’s not just shutters that are wowing our customers. our stunning new Calico blinds are a new variation of a Roman blind that has just come from Australia. they are lighter than traditional Romans with more neutral lightweight fabrics which are perfect for properties close to the sea. “And for people who have conservatories we have the Perfect Fit system which has been specifically designed for uPVC windows so there is no need to drill into existing frames.” to book an appointment for one of Marc’s complimentary home consultations please call 0151 203 6160 or 07863 805638. Big budget rivals force Chris to rethink karting career
20
Little Sutton Kart racing ace 25-yearold Chris Taylor is now facing up to the reality of this season being his last in top flight kart racing, after enjoying an illustrious career so far. Starting at the age of eight, Chris is the most successful Merseyside, Wirral and Cheshire area kart racer to date. At the recent National Kart Racing Association (NKRA) Formula Blue class British Championship Finals held at the Glan-y-Gors (GYG) Raceway near Betwys –y –coed North Wales, the former Hooton Park based Cheshire Kart Racing Club 07 champion and 08 runner up, was competing against the top 50 Formula Blue drivers from all over the country for National honours. To qualify for the Grand finals, drivers had to compete at regional level in the Scottish, North or South of England series, usually of eight rounds.. Chris qualified 5th in the North of England having only competed in five out of the eight rounds as he wished to contest the CKRC Hooton Championship as well but dates clashed from time to time during the year. Chris arrived at the GYG Raceway for the championships on the Saturday morning after having to have his Italian made EKS kart chassis welded on the Friday as a spare could not be sourced in time. Having only raced at GYG once earlier this year, Chris now found himself on other drivers cast off tyres, not new ones
as used by some of the other racers with reputed seasons budgets of £25,000, in what can only be described at times as “Monsoon” conditions over the both days of the finals. Setting the fastest lap in one of his races, Chris then finished in 12th place in the Grande final, however on corrected scores for heat positions, he was eventually awarded 8th place overall Now looking towards finishing the 09 season competing in the last 3 rounds of the CKRC Hooton Park Wirral Formula Blue Championship, Chris is hoping to consolidate a 2nd place, as due to competing nationally he has missed vital points and he cannot win the championship as his nearest rival cannot be beaten for the Championship. Chris is heavily involved in bringing new drivers into the sport, especially the 8-12 year old Cadets, and would like to thank his long time supporters Castrol refinery Ellesmere Port, NGK Sparking Plugs, The Quality Factor Ellesmere Port and all the other people who have helped during the season. Bonfire Night is traditionally a time when communities can come together and enjoy responsibly organised celebrations. There is, however, a darker side whereby individuals or groups hide under the cloak of ‘having a good time’ to start deliberate and dangerous fires and to create fire-related disturbances which place members of the public and their property at risk. Increasingly, such activity is not confined to November 5th, but begins around the middle of October.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has, for many years, encountered problems in the run up to November 5th. Although the number of incidents has, thankfully, fallen over recent years, 2008 still

AUTUMN DELIGHTS IN OCTOBER Gardening by Janet Heath AutuMN is well underway and your garden will be gradually shutting down in preparation for winter. The exuberance of summer flowers and foliage gives way to the more subtle colours of gold, russet, barley yellow and orange from grasses and leaves. At this time of year there are still flowers - look out for Dahlias in white red or yellow, the pink flowers of the fleshy Sedum spectabile and some Japanese Anemones will still be flowering. However it is the foliage from grasses that will give you delight at this time of year. the grasses such as Stipa gigantea with its tall oat heads and Miscanthus sinensis Zebrinus has cream striped green leaves. trees such as Acers have wonderful rich red foliage. there are also many varieties of Crab Apple (Malus) such as John Downie or Golden Hornet with red or yellow small apples that stay on the trees in autumn. Rowans or Sorbus trees also have ornamental berries that can last on the tree for weeks although the birds tend to eat the red berries first leaving yellow and cream berries on the tree. In the garden you can continue to dig up and split perennials at this time of year. the roots will continue to grow even in frosty conditions in soil that is still warm from summer below the surface. Conifers and other evergreens can be moved at this time of year, as there is less likelihood of the roots drying out. Lawns can be scarified and given an autumn feed in October. It is also a good time to lay new turf as it will be well watered in and be less likely to be walked on thus allowing it to grow on well. Complete digging up any potatoes making sure none are left behind to harbour diseases. Apples that are best for keeping tend to be ready for harvesting in october. An apple that is ripe is one that can be picked when you lift it gently and it comes away easily. Pulling an apple from the tree is an indication that it is not yet ripe. Q. Do I need to use a toner after I cleanse? A. If you use a traditional oil-based cleanser then a toner applied on cotton wool will remove the last traces of cleanser to leave the surface of your skin completely clean. However, if you use a water-based or foaming cleanser this is not strictly necessary as the skin should be completely clean once it has been rinsed with tepid water. Remember that toners won’t close pores and they won’t deep-clean, but depending on the formulation they can leave the face feeling soft and refreshed. Many advanced toner formulations are supplied in spray form and can be sprayed onto the face to add extra moisture before you apply your moisturiser. Spray toners can be used throughout the day to freshen- up the skin and add more moisture.
Q. My eyelashes are fine and sparse. I’ve tried lash extensions which make them look longer but don’t do anything to thicken them. Are there any alternatives to lashthickening mascaras? A. there are quite a few alternatives to lashthickening mascaras. Look at the following web link for more information. http://www.telegraph. co.uk/science/science-news/6034510/Longereyelashes-without-mascara-thanks-to-scientificbreakthrough.html I find that very often extremely fine lashes often cannot support the weight of a lash extension. However, there are new lash extensions available now which are much lighter and allow for two eyelash extensions to be bonded onto each natural eyelash giving a much fuller look. Ask at your local salon for further details.
