Shell public relations manager Edward Brady, pictured left, said: “It became clear in recent years that the older people in our society were not benefiting from corporate sponsorship in the same way as younger people. “Our local partnership with Age Concern is our way of addressing the issue and, hopefully, making a difference.” Stanlow provides jobs for around 800 Shell people and a large number of contractors site on 1944: a regular basis. ELEVEN young people from Ellesmere Port and Neston who completed a special sports project aimed at re-igniting their interest in education, have been awarded certificates at a special presentation. The annual Sports Project Presentation took place at the Epic Leisure Centre in acknowledgment of the hard work put in by the 15 and 16 year olds who took part in the scheme. Sport is used as a tool and a fresh approach to engage young people who are at risk of exclusion from mainstream education. Ten students achieved their 60 hours, Sport and Fitness short course ASDAN accreditation. They also received their Duke of Edinburgh sectional awards for Physical and Skill, as well as their emergency first aid certificate. Dom Ellis, a year eleven student from Cheshire Oaks High School was awarded his Level One Sports Leaders UK award along with his sectional awards for Duke of Edinburgh (physical, skill and voluntary). Dom also achieved his V accreditation and his Emergency First Aid Award. Participants were referred from Ellesmere Port Specialist School of Performing Arts, Cheshire Oaks Specialist Sports College, Capenhurst Specialist School and the Education Support Team. Each one was involved in the planning and the development of the programme. Michelle Aspden, the Council’s Youth Sport Development Officer said: “All the young people, families, agencies and schools should be exceptionally proud of the work that has taken place over the past academic year. The young people have not only received qualifications, but also developed their personal and social skills.” Four special recognition awards were given to the year 10 pupils for: Best Folder – Connor Duckworth; Attendance - Danny Barnett; Sportsmanship - Jack Gates; Overall Performer - Steven Duncan Coaches, support staff and young people from Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cheshire Oaks High School, Ellesmere Port Specialist School of Performing Arts, Capenhurst Specialist School and Education Support Officers What do you call a pig with no clothes on? HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett Q. I am very fair skinned and I am going on holiday to a hot country. I always burn, so should I have some sunbed sessions before I go to protect my skin? A. I would never advocate the use of sunbeds. A suntan is the skins response to exposure to harmful radiation in order to protect itself. In short, a tanned skin is a damaged skin. If you are very fair skinned take sensible precautions – apply a very high factor sunblock at regular intervals, stay out of the sun during the hottest hours and wear a hat. If you want to go brown – fake it with a self-tan product. Either build up the fake tan gradually with a product applied daily or visit a professional therapist for fake tan treatment. Don’t forget that fake tan is purely cosmetic and will not protect your skin from the sun. Q. I have small unsightly red veins on my cheeks, how can I remove them? A. These small red veins are often called ‘thread veins’ or ‘dilated capillaries’ and the ones that have a centre with ‘legs’ radiating out from the centre are called ‘spider naevi’ due to the fact they look like little red spiders! There are a variety of solutions to your problem. Masking them with a remedial camouflage cream or green tinted concealer may be suitable. If this is not acceptable they can be successfully removed with either laser or short wave diathermy, which is also often called advanced electrolysis. Not everyone is suitable for these treatments so ensure that your qualified therapist gives you a consultation prior to treatment. Prevention is always better than cure with most skin problems so ask your therapist about measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of the formation of further red veins.

Angela Bartlett is a beauty and holistic expert with 25 years of experience in her field. She is the Chair for the British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology, a professional association established over 30 years ago and representing thousands of therapists throughout the UK. Her expertise is called on to examine students for an international examination board in many areas of the world. Angela is also part of the HABIA forum, helping to make decisions for qualifications and standards in the UK beauty industry. Angela is a successful column writer for the trade journals Vitality and Salonfocus and has a beauty, holistic and skin care clinic in Tarporley.

CAPENHURST Primary School has been caught by the gardening bug! Kate Thomas and Sue Jones have been inspiring everyone at the village school to get involved in school gardening projects. AUGUST IN YOUR GARDEN Gardening by Janet Heath AUGUST can be a dull month in the garden as the spring and early summer flowering shrubs and perennials are over and tree foliage can look a bit tired. With a bit of planning, you can have colour in the garden if you concentrate on flowering perennials and some shrubs. Flowering shrubs include such favourites as hydrangeas, Hypericum Hidcote with its shiny buttercup yellow flowers, Lavatera, which flowers for weeks in shades of white and pink and Buddleia, try the variety Black Knight with its deep purple flowers. If you go for flowers, there are many perennials that will reliably flower every year especially if you have a sunny border. Campanula lactiflora is tall with clusters of bell flowers in white or pink. For something different and if you have slightly damp soil, consider Inula hookeri which will give you large, yellow delicately fringed daisy flowers about 75cm (30ins) tall in July and August. Pair it with scarlet or deep pink Dahlias for a bright show of summer colour. Gypsophila or Baby’s Breath is an old cottage garden favourite with tiny button white flowers on tall stems (75cm (30ins) which will give you an airy cloud of white. In the vegetable garden you should keep your, salads, tomatoes, beans and courgettes watered. If you pick them regularly, they will continue to produce. Beans and peas will tend to stop producing if pods are allowed to mature. Late salads and radishes can be sown for cropping in autumn. Try some of the salad leaves for winter such as Land Cress which is similar in flavour to watercress but easier to grow in fertile soil that does not dry out. Spinach can also be sown for winter and spring cropping again in rich fertile soil. August is a good time to clip hedges for the last time in the year. Lavender can also be clipped back after flowering for bushy growth next year. Remember not to cut back into wood where there is no green growth, as this will kill the plant. Lawns may well be looking tired after long dry spells but they will come back again after early autumn rains. Rather than waste water on the lawn, just accept the situation! This means that only one trench will need to be dug and one set of road works will be put in place; so disruption to local traffic is significantly reduced. United Utilities aree constructing a new 2.2km water pipe from the junction of Pooltown Road and Sutton Way through to the Water Treatment Works at Sutton Hall. After running along Sutton Way the route of the water pipe will follow Green Lane, Glencoe Road, Harewood Avenue and Gerrard Avenue. This work means that Ellesmere Port will have a more robust water network able to supply high quality drinking water to the area for years to come. This work will be complete in winter 2009. National Grid are working in this area to replace 6.4km of old metal gas pipes with modern plastic ones by February 2010. The gas pipes that are being replaced run down Pooltown Road, along Sutton Way and then up Chester Road. The old pipes have served the area well and replacing them will mean a more secure, reliable gas supply for at least the next 80 years. As a result, Sutton Way is closed from Pooltown Road to Overpool Road, with a diversionary route via Pooltown Road, Capenhurst Lane and Overpool Road. PEOPLE in Great Sutton are being asked to give their views on proposals to improve the Delamere Drive play area.. Play leaders have been working with local children, aged between 8 and 13 who live close to the selected play areas to help choose their creative play equipment as part of the government-funded scheme.
