Shell students support hospice STUDENTS working at Shell’s Technology Centre Thornton raised over £600 by washing around 80 employees’ vehicles to raise money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. This year’s group of placement students wanted to run a fundraising event for a local charity before they moved on after their time with Shell. They decided on running a “Thornton Charity Car Wash” and their selected charity was the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.

FIFTY years of Scouting will be celebrated in Great Sutton this month. On Saturday 19th September the 1st Great Sutton Scout Group are inviting former Scouts and leaders to join them at the event in Great Sutton Village Hall, on Old Chester Road. The event will be split into two sections during the day. In the afternoon from 2-5pm, they will be displaying an array of nostalgic photographs and memorabilia for all interested individuals to enjoy. A great deal of history has been logged and restored and they hope that people will find it an interesting walk down memory lane. Tents and uniforms are on display as well as a campfire mock-up. In the evening, from 7-11pm, the celebrations continue with an array of entertainment, and a few words from special guests to highlight the Group’s achievements, and to acknowledge the value and benefits that local scouting can bring to so many peoples lives. HOMELESS CATS GALLERY

Can you provide a good home for a cat?

The Great Sutton Cat Rescue, run by Gina Randall, finds homes for dozens of stray cats every year - and they need your help to accommodate these moggies. Sooty Sooty’s owner had to move to alternative accommodation due to ill health. She is currently fed by relatives but desperate for a new home and owner. Sooty is a black shorthair female, neutered and vaccinated and around 3 years old. She is not used to a busy family household so needs to be placed in a quiet home where she can blossom once settled. Sooty is used to going outdoors so would need a home with access to a garden.

COMMUNITY

Poppy Poppy is an elderly girl, around 12 years old, who has now been in care for over a year. She suffered with an overgrooming problem when she first arrived, but since her feline partner has been rehomed, is much more settled and now sports a beautiful plush fur coat!! Poppy would thrive with a retired person or couple to live out her twilight years. She is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

22

Kittens We have some older kittens looking for homes, now around 4 months old, who need to be homed in pairs. They are fully vaccinated and treated against fleas and worms. Quiet homes are sought without young children.

Katrina Katrina is six years old and a timid little girl. She needs to find a home* where she can be an only pet as she has been badly bullied by some of the other cats. She needs a quiet home without children with an experienced cat lover who can show her some time and patience to settle down. Once her trust is earned, she is a sweet little thing. She would be happy as an indoor cat.She has been spayed and microchipped and will be vaccinated before rehoming.

There are also several other cats in care still looking for loving and quiet homes. * Please note that all potential homes will be vetted and a donation is requested at the time of homing to enable Cat Rescue to continue helping the stray cats and their kittens.

Do you realise that some doorstep lenders charge up to 545% APR on loans. one finance company, has agreed, according to a report in The Guardian on 28th July, that some of its customers have been charged annualised interest rates of up to 545%! They reported profits for the first 6 months of 2009 at £53.1mill, up 3.5%.

This prompted the charity `Barnardo`s ` to call on the office of Fair Trading to to investigate the practices of lenders that `prey on the poor`. They cited an example of a loan calculation of £500 over 23 weeks, the total repaid would be £747.50 – an interest rate of 545% APR.

There are several `doorstep lender` companies with thousands of customers in Cheshire West, calling on people and offering personal loans to people who have few other choices.

If you are paying off a loan and you are unhappy with the amount you have to pay back, there is an alternative. West Cheshire Credit Union exists to provide small, lo-cost loans to people who live or work in the West Cheshire area. The most a credit union can charge, by law, is 2% per month, equivalent to 26.8% APR, a massive difference with any current doorstep credit business. `Many of our customers have taken out a loan from us to pay off a doorstep lender, and then they save a lot in future interest payments` said John Dearnley, Marketing Director of West Cheshire Credit Union. If you have a current loan with a doorstep lender, the sooner you join the credit union and pay it off with a lowercost loan, the more you will save. This has to be a sensible move, to join call 01244 399006 or use the website, wccu.co.uk to download an application form.

LATE SUMMER IN YOUR GARDEN Gardening by Janet Heath SEPTEMBER often provides a blaze of colour before autumn takes hold so if you like bright, bold colours there is a wide range of flowers to choose from. Shrubs such as Hibiscus syriacus also known as the tree hollyhock because of the shape of their flowers, are hardy shrubs with flowers in white, pink and blue. They flower for weeks in autumn. Perovskia Blue Spire is a small shrub with branches of tiny electric blue flowers. It likes a welldrained soil in sun and provides colour well into autumn. Bright, bold colours for a damp soil why not try Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm in yellow and pair it with Lobelia cardinalis with its purple leaved foliage and red flowers. Heleniums come in a range of red, yellow, orange and russet colours, are good for the back of a border and give colour for a few weeks especially if dead-headed. Japanese anemones are great ground cover with tall or shorter flowering stems in white or pink. They also flower for weeks, well into autumn. Some delphiniums will flower again in September if their first flush of flowers were removed after flowering. You can dig up and split perennials in autumn and as the soil is still warm they should settle in well before winter. Try to remember to plant daffodils in September (tulips can wait until October) for flowering next year. Lawn repairs can be carried out in September. If you have bare patches in the lawn or want to sow a new lawn, September is a good time for sowing grass seed or laying turf. Scarify to remove moss and apply a weed killer to control those tough perennial weeds. Hedges can have their final trim of the year to leave them neat and tidy over winter. Autumn ripening raspberries such as Autumn Bliss and blackberries will now be in season and taste wonderful. Some early season apples will be ripening so if you want to grow your own dessert apples, consider Egremont Russet, Fiesta, Katy or Greensleeves. They will be ready to eat in September but will not keep for very long, so just pick them from the tree! Woman dumped rubbish at beauty spot AN Ellesmere Port woman has been fined and ordered to pay costs totalling more than £1000 after more than one and a half tonnes of rubbish was dumped at a local beauty spot. Angela Bailey of Ferguson Avenue Ellesmere Port failed to show up at Chester and Ellesmere Port Magistrates Court on 10th August. Bailey had, however, appeared at an earlier hearing in July when she pleaded not guilty and magistrates proceeded with the case in her absence. Although Bailey was not present at her home at the time of the offence the court heard that young children were used to remove the waste in wheelie bins from 60 Ferguson Avenue to the site of the fly tipping at Rivacre Valley beauty spot. Cheshire West and Chester Council was able to prove that the waste had come from Bailey’s home address and that she had therefore breached her duty of care. The court fined Bailey £200, £15 victim surcharge and awarded full costs to the council of £888.80 making a total of £1103.80.

Care scheme set for council decision PEOPLE in Great Sutton have had their say on plans for an over 60s centre. Cheshire West and Chester Council is proposing to create an extra care housing scheme on the site of the former Gorsthills Primary School, on Berry Drive. The state-of-the-art development would provide purpose-built apartments within a landscaped site with access to a 24-hour care team as well as a range of communal facilities designed to promote health and well-being. Plans showing the key design principles went on display at two public consultation events last month. Ellesmere Port is already home to one of Cheshire’s first extra care housing schemes. Hollymere development opened at New Grosvenor Road in March 2009. Councillor Brenda Dowding portfolio holder for Adult Social Care and Health services at Cheshire West and Chester Council said: “This additional development in the area would give the growing number of older people in Ellesmere Port a wider choice of accommodation options. Residents would be able to benefit from living in an environment which has been tailored to meet their individual needs.” Previous plans were dismissed following complaints about the potential design of the building. The council is due to make a final decision in the autumn Dentist on a first date says: “That was a nice evening, I will see you again in six months.”

Q. I buy loads of expensive skin care products but never get the results that I expect. What can I do? A. Skin care products will only give the promised results when they are used on the type of skin that they have been formulated for. This is why an in-depth skin care consultation and analysis of your skin by a trained therapist is so important to ensure that you get the right products for your skin. Quite often people buy far too many products when just a few of the correct products will do a far better job, sometimes less is more! Also, you need to know how to use your products. Your therapist should give you expert instruction on the application and removal of your skin care products so that you are completely familiar with what you are supposed to do with them before you take them home. This also helps you to get the most value out of what you have bought. A final word, don’t forget that some skin care products promise results that would never be achievable no matter how much you used them! Q. I like to use a fake tan product instead of damaging my skin with the sun, but I am finding that I am getting a lot of blocked pores on my face. Is there anything I can do to improve this? A. At this time of year many of my clients like to use a fake tan product to give them a glowing, tanned appearance to take them into the Autumn months. However, blackheads and blocked pores can be a common side effect of using fake tan products, especially if you have oilier skin or visible pores. To improve the appearance of your skin try using of an exfoliating product, suitable for your skin type, on a regular basis and treat yourself once in a while to a deep cleansing facial treatment with your therapist. I often recommend substituting fake tan with a mineral based bronzing powder, bronzing dust or a tinted moisturiser for your face and keep the fake tan products for your body.
