Stuart finds form after turbulent summer

4

YOUNG kayak star Stuart Parry shrugged off the disappointment of missing out on a medal in the European championships to emerge as one of the country’s top paddlers. In early August Stuart spent a week at The European Freestyle Kayaking Championships which were held in Ourense, Galicia in Northern Spain. Along with several other members of the GB team, he found it difficult to quickly come to terms with the waters of the River Minho. Practice was limited to one hour per day and local Spanish paddlers had a clear advantage. Despite a couple of promising runs he failed to win the expected medal. The experience will undoubtedly help him as he begins to focus on The World Championships , which are to be held in Switzerland next year. On his way back through France he paddled the River Rhone at Lyon, one of the difficult freestyle waves in Europe. In early September Stuart regained his form and secured 2nd place in The International Festival of Freestyle, a competition featuring the top paddlers

from both the UK and Europe. In coming second Stuart was not only the top junior but, with one exception, also beat the best senior GB team members. In the past weeks Stuart has also won the fourth round of the Youth Freestyle Series and goes into the final event in first place. One more victory will see him ranked top junior for the third successive year. He is now training hard for the British Championships to be held in October. Stuart, who lives in Ness, has also been asked to demonstrate the sport of freestyle kayaking at several venues including The Outdoor Show at the N.E.C. and at the Bedford River Festival. He has been helped by Chester-based paddle manufacturer, Mitchell Blades. l Stuart in action at the European championships in Spain

Water rip-off?

After talking to one or two Neston residents about water bills, I was surprised to find out just how much they didn’t know how much they were being charged. Neston residents are charged more than 22% more than any other customers in the United Utilities area yes 22%, residents affected by these charges live in an area from the marsh up to the A540 Chester High Road along towards Heswall. The reason for this came about when the Department of the Environment handed control of this area for the treatment of sewerage to Welsh Water, who add a massive standing charge for this treatment. In my case for a three bedroom

[email protected]

house I pay in sewerage charges £376 of which £137 is a standing charge, my total bill is £629, ironically residents outside this catchments area such as Willaston don’t pay these charges, but they do however use the same sewerage system as we do. Residents shouldn’t be confused by the United Utilities title on their bill, this company only collect the money on behalf of Welsh Water. To add insult to injury, Welsh residents pay a lot less than we do in England yet this government give the Welsh Assembly £20 billion of tax payers money every year so Wales can benefit from free care homes, free child care etc. and we are subsidising them. Hen Night!

8

I am feeling very pleased with myself indeed. A few months ago I decided to get some chickens from the Battery Hen Welfare Trust. I know Jamie Oliver does it, but that didn’t put me off! Last week we set off for Rossendale with a car load of empty boxes and came back with 20 dazed and confused, threadbare-looking battery hens recently saved from slaughter as they reached the end of their productive life. It’s nearly a week since they arrived and already they are perking up and visibly starting to enjoy life in the open air and scratching around in real soil. It’s not always a happy ending though, as one chicken couldn’t handle the ordeal of moving and passed on within a few hours. Yet another was very ill needing what can best be described as a water birth but with the support of Adele from the trust she talked through the process and now the little hen is recovering well. Hens are actually very charming and full of character. A few even go back into the hen house when I call out ‘night night’. If you want to find out more about BHWT or just keeping chickens give me a call. Jon Barton www.foodheros.co.uk

Neston dogs have their day THE Friends of Stanney Fields Park organised a hugely successful dog show last week. Dozens of pet owners turned up for the free event in the glorious autumn sunshine. The best in show was six-month-old Sydney, who was also best puppy. Most handsome dog was Cobie, prettiest bitch was Sky, best veteran was Haley, happiest dog was Harry and best child handler was Tipsee. Funding for the event came from Neston Pet Supplies and Bargain Booze. Flu jab dates

14

FLU Clinics will be held at Neston Surgery throughout October. The clinic is giving flu jabs to stave off the illness which spreads very rapidly through coughs and sneezes. Flu symptoms hit you suddenly and severely. They usually include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles, and you can often get a cough and sore throat at the same time. Catching flu is a nasty experience for most of us. However, for some people it can lead to serious illnesses like bronchitis and pneumonia and may require hospital treatment. Every winter, a large number of elderly people die from influenza. The vaccine is normally available in the autumn and is made from the strain of flu that is expected in the coming winter. In order to remain protected, you need to ensure that you have a flu jab every year. Clinics will be held on the following dates but people are asked to book early. Earlier this year Cheshire County Council Road Safety Unit designated the A540 as a “Red Route” as a result of the high volume of serious road crashes in recent years. Many of the crashes are occurring between Two Mills and Burton, involving cars emerging from junctions. Recently all homes in CH64 received a special leaflet from the Road Safety Unit and their mobile display has visited Gordale Nurseries and Neston Family Fun Day. Christopher Boyton hair salons may be 36 years old but they’re definitely still ‘with it’!

F

or those of you who know Heswall well, you will know that Christopher Boyton Hair & Beauty salon is positioned in one of the centre’s most desirable locations, amidst Heswall’s popular restaurants and bars and just a hop ‘n’ skip away from M&S. Although their Telegraph Road salon is now in it’s 11th year, Christopher Boyton (CB) is actually 36 years old and has been trading successfully since 1972 - in fact, CB was one of the first salons to offer a cut & finish as a ‘package’ from their Borough Road salon in Birkenhead. Today it seems that nothing can get in the way of this reputable and ambitious salon - still managed by Christopher (founder and partner) and Ron (original stylist and salon partner), plans are always on the go for their in-house trained stylists to perfect their skills and to keep up to date with the latest fashion and styling techniques.

The evening was an ideal opportunity for people to view the newly renovated b e a u t y rooms above the Heswall s a l o n , browse the treatments available and to take Christopher, Kelly, Donna, Ron advantage of exclusive offers. Mandy Molby (Wirral Witches) and Kathy Hodson (Deputy

F

undraising for Claire House CB joined forces Kathy, Mandy, Donna with The Wirral W i t c h e s (Women In Touch with Claire House) and Gusto in July to entertain over 100 Wirral ladies with a delicious 3 course fundraising dinner. The event raised over £1,500 for Claire House with the support of the salon, Gusto restaurant, David M. Robinson jewellers, Estee Lauder skincare experts and Yaffe Fusion Art photographers. The lucky ‘lunching ladies’ received their very own goodie bags and won a variety of raffle prizes including a free cut h ra s model Sa and colour makeover by Ron and hi Christopher worth over £100! (see the winner, Vicky - top left). Ron (salon partner and Wella Colour Expert) also performed a live ‘cut and colour’ makeover.

Community group’s vision for CH64

20

THE annual meeting of the community group ch64inc was held recently to talk about all sorts of issues affecting the area. Fifty people turned up at Neston Town Hall to hear about the latest developments with the new supermarket, ideas for Citizens’ Week and how the shake-up of local councils will affect this area. They announced that as part of the Sainsbury’s deal, a total of £750,000 is to be spent on improvements within Neston town centre. Borough councillors are deciding how the money will be allocated It was agreed that Citizens’ Week, in March, had been a big success with many people remarking that it helped give them more of a sense of community. The group are keen to get the views of 14-18-year-olds for next year’s event. Chairman Andy Mills explained that ch64inc exists to speak up for the area, improve social cohesion and encourage community action. They will work with the new Neston Parish Council which comes in to operation next year. l Members of ch64inc committee: Mike Wellman, Robin Hughes, Peter Cunnington, Don Howell, Carrie Spacey and Andy Mills at the meeting. Pets keep you healthy Oh, it’s all doom and gloom. The credit crunch!! What will the next bit of bad news be? Oil prices are up again, as I write. Holiday companies are collapsing. Our carbon footprint is massive. We’re all putting on weight, and leading stressed lives! Yet in the middle of all this, the people I meet day in, day out, are doing something very special and very right. Owning a dog is something so simple, and just so helpful. Think about it… We’re all getting so unfit. The weight just keeps going on. Have you joined a health club? Is it working? Bet it costs. Bet you don’t get a full time personal trainer. Yet Fido is your own very personal trainer and insists you take exercise – with him, in person – several times a day. You don’t miss out. You get fit together. The world is getting so unfriendly…but when you take the dog for a walk, you enter a whole new social world. The dog owners and walkers of this world are fascinating and wonderful people! Life full of stress? Stroking a dog is well known to reduce heart rate and blood pressure in the owner. Dog owning is such a health benefit.

COMMUNITY

Holidays abroad are becoming quite an issue. Firstly there’s the carbon cost of jet flights to the sun or snow. And then there’s the risk of financial loss with an uncertain holiday industry. Yet more and more people are holidaying with their dog. Both in the UK, and now in Europe by utilising the PETS travel scheme.

ELLESMERE Port and Neston Borough Council is asking all residents to be on their guard against bogus callers who might claim to be from the council’s finance department. The warning comes in the wake of several incidents involving bogus telephone callers demanding bank account details from residents on the pretext that council tax payments can be claimed or refunded. The borough council wants to make residents aware that it would never make phone calls to members of the public requesting this sort of personal information.

l PEOPLE can have a look at the new Neston Resource Centre in Burton Road. NCYC (Neston Community Youth Centre) is inviting the public to view the premises on Wednesday 8th October, 4-8pm. l POLICE have been asked to investigate speeding motorists in West Vale, Allans Meadow and Flint Drive, in Little Neston. A speed indicator is being installed on the Bushell Road/Hinderton Road junction, similar to those in Burton Road, Ness, Burton and Willaston. l THREE Mini-Motos have been seized and crushed following incidents of the scooters being ridden on public footpaths in Neston, according to the police. l THE borough council has taken over parking enforcement in the area. This could lead to more parking fines being dished out so motorists are being advised to think carefully about where and when they are parking their vehicles.

NESTON & Little Neston have won the Cheshire Community Pride Competition for the Best Kept Large Village. Last week Janet Griffiths, secretary of Neston Civic Society, collected the award at Wilmslow Leisure Centre from the Mayor of Ellesmere Port and Neston, Keith Butcher. The area entered was in the category of villages with a population of 5,001 – 10,000. Mrs Griffiths said: “This was a real team effort. A lot of local shopkeepers displayed posters to raise awareness, and the Shop Front Scheme organised by Neston Market Town Initiative has made the area look much smarter. The Borough Council’s cleaning team been very supportive and try hard to keep the streets litter free. Each year the judges have been impressed by Stanney Fields Park.” This year a team led by Celia Garvey, Chair of Neston Civic Society, have planted flowers in front of Neston Town Born on 27th October 1939: John Cleese

Hall, and have again planted flowers around the Bushell Fountain at Neston Cross. Neston Civic Society adopted Neston Station in 2006, and a team led by Pat Hughes planted flowers on the platforms, and regularly report problems to Arriva, who have been very helpful. This year students from Neston High School created a mural for Neston Station’s underpass. Many Neston people have said how much they appreciate all the flowers, and the improvements to Neston Station. The award came with a metal plaque, and the question now is where this should be displayed. Janet Griffiths would welcome any good ideas, at janet. [email protected] or on 336 5478. The society also received a cheque for £100, which will help towards the costs of future projects. l Janet Griffiths with the plaque by the Bushell Fountain at Neston Cross

Family’s vision brings hotel to life

ENTERTAINMENT

MONTHS of hard work have brought the Woodcote Hotel into the 21st century Ingrid and John McFerran, along with their daughter Katie, have transformed the once neglected building into a fabulous venue fit for any function. After spending four years at a hotel in Wiltshire, they have moved back up to the Wirral to take on a new challenge at the Woodcote. When they moved into the venue on Hooton Road back in April, they had little idea of the task facing them. They have spent £500,000 completely refurbishing the interior to give it a more modern look without changing the character of the building. “Initially we thought it might take six weeks to do all the work but it has actually been five months!” said Ingrid. “We’ve fitted new bedrooms, completely redecorated, rewired, replumbed and reroofed the building.”

30

Now that the work has been completed, the 16-bedroom hotel looks amazing. From the outside, very little has changed to the attractive building. But once inside, guests are greeted by

Ingrid McFerran, Sue Adams and Katie McFerran clean and modern decor, which has been designed by Katie. Ingrid says: “Our vision has been to create a classical look with modern and retro touches – but we’re keen that it doesn’t look pretentious.” The main function room has a bar and lounge area with luxurious leather sofas as well as a large dining area looking out onto the garden. Food and beverage manager Sue Adams has made a huge impact, bringing in two top chefs who are producing stunning dishes as well as their own home made bread! The bedrooms are modern and individually decorated with en suite facilities, flat screen TV and stylish soft furnishings. It’s a new era for the Woodcote and under the new owners the future looks as bright as the new decor!

Curtain goes up on big season for little actors

32

IT has been a busy summer for a Neston youth theatre group – but the stage is set for an exciting 2009. The Little Actors Youth Theatre has secured funding to take part in the National Theatre’s Connections Programme. The support has come from Sheila Hancock, Joanna Thaw and the trustees of the John Thaw Foundation, which will also help the group offer big concessions to low income families. Artistic director Samantha Giblin set up LAYT in February last year as a result of a donation from the Foundation. Since then the group has appeared at the Neston Village Fair, held two fund-raising auctions and participated in the 2008 National Theatre’s New Connections programme with a show at Theatr Clwyd. Cup victory glosses over poor season for cricketers

34

GOOD late results put a shine on a fairly average season for Neston Cricket Club. The 1sts finished 7th out of 12 in the Cheshire ECB Premier League but were well off the pace set by champions Alderley Edge. Neston beat Widnes on the final day with the consistent Chris Finegan taking three wickets and Lee Dixon guiding them home with an unbeaten 85. The 2nds looked certain to be relegated with two weeks to go but an emphatic nine wicket victory over Widnes on the final day secured their place in the top flight with Thorn taking 6-66 and Cooper hitting 84 not out.

The 3rds had a poor league season, finishing ninth but that was all forgotten when Mike Potter’s team won the 3rd XI cup, beating Heaton Mersey on the final. Nick Carter (3-19) and Rob Burke (3-34) were on song as Mersey were bowled out for 141. In reply, an unbeaten 49 from Ritchie Palmer steered Neston to victory.
