October seems to be a time for new beginnings. We’ve got features on the relaunch of Woodcote House, in Hooton, and The Bull pub, in Great Sutton. There’s also a glitzy launch of the Iceni hairdressers on Overpool Road. We’ve got the story of young karting star Ashleigh Byron, who fought back from horrific injuries, a commemorative event for tragic biker Andy White and there’s the story of Kirsty Wilcox, who is a cover girl for a national magazine. Hope you enjoy it

Village school opens its doors

School blaze

Capenhurst Church of England Primary School will be having an open day on Thursday 2nd October at 1.30pm. Parents of children due to start school in September 2009 or even later can come for a look around and get a feel for the village school.

Bill and Rhona Lacey, of Sutton Way, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in September. Ellesmere Port Specialist School of Performing Arts was closed for a week after a fire spread to the roof.

Crematorium scheme refused PLANS for a crematorium in Hooton have finally been rejected. Government minister Hazel Blears dismissed an appeal by Crematoria Management after the borough council had earlier denied the company planning permission. The plan was to build a crematorium capable of 1,260 cremations a year at Waterworks Lane, Hooton, near the station. It would have had a chapel and garden of remembrance. But Mrs Blears said the crematorium would have been harmful to the green belt.

What’s cooking?

6

Budding junior chefs from around the borough have been spicing up their lunch boxes and infusing their taste buds with healthy grub thanks to Shell’s sponsorship of the Junior Chefs’ Academy. Over 90 children from across the borough took part in one of the three events funded by the company and hosted by Active8 Leisure Ltd at Neston Recreation Centre, Ellesmere Port Golf Club and the EPIC Leisure Centre. Tasty topics included sowing, growing, and creating cookery masterpieces with herbs, making perfect picnics and blistering BBQs and livening up lunchboxes with fun, tasty and healthy alternatives to sandwiches. Sessions were delivered by a fully qualified Junior Academy chef who used an energetic and hands-on approach to teach children,

aged between five and eleven, a range of cookery techniques and educate them on how to make smarter nutritional choices through interactive games and activities. Shell health, safety and environment manager Mike Brown who joined the wouldbe chefs at the EPIC Leisure Centre said: “The course is a refreshing and engaging way to tackle the problem of child obesity and change individual attitudes towards food.” l Chef Paul Cooper shows junior chefs, from left, Daniel Paesler eight, Niyah Callister six, Lauren Hutchinson seven and Josh Weston aged 11 how to liven up their lunch boxes with the help of Mike Brown during a visit to the EPIC Leisure Centre in Ellesmere Port.

Stanlow provides jobs for around 800 Shell people and a large number of contractors on site on a regular basis. Their salaries provide a boost for the local economies of the north west and help create further employment.

Cutting edge launch for new salon

COMMUNITY

A STYLISH event was held to mark the official opening of Iceni Hair and Beauty Salon. Roman soldiers manned the doors, waiters circulated wearing very little and there was also an appearance by a giant drag queen! But why the Roman theme? The name Iceni comes from a Celtic women’s warrior tribe under Queen Boudica who fought off the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago. The salon logo comes from the Celtic symbol for sisterhood. Proprietor Sally Moore staged the champagne event as a thank you to everyone who helped her set up the salon. Sally has been a freelance stylist for 20 years but for the last 12 months she has

been working on the Iceni concept. The Overpool Road salon has enjoyed a hugely successful first few weeks, with many of Sally’s existing customers choosing to enjoy the unique Iceni experience. Inside there is Italianthemed design with the emphasis on comfort and luxury. Sally said: “We only use the best quality products and give every client a friendly expert service.” Customers can be assured of the best quality staff, with the recruitment of stylist Rachel Byrne, from Nicolas Jon, and beautician Jo Thomas, from Saks.  The salon is offering a permanent 10% discount for NHS, fire and police employees.

Puggoers raise a glass to Big Andy A special event takes place on 19th October to commemorate Andy White who died in a road accident earlier this year. Known as ‘Big Andy’, the 44-year-old was a hugely popular figure in Little Sutton and known for his larger than life personality. Andy was a keen biker but this ultimately cost him his life when he was killed in a motorbike accident on the A41 New Ferry Bypass in March. Now his friends at the Olde Red Lion, in Little Sutton, have organised a ‘Buy Big Andy a Drink Day’. A ride out has been arranged to Llangollen and back to the pub for an afternoon of entertainment from the likes of The Missin’ Beats and Koo Ka Choo. People who knew him - and those who didn’t are invited to buy Big Andy a drink! Monies raised will go towards funding musical tuition for Andy’s children Kate and Tom.

Slimline Kirsty is a cover girl Kirsty Wilcox looks a million dollars after making the cover of a national magazine. The 35-year-old, from Great Sutton, is celebrating after being chosen to be the cover girl for the August and September issue of the Slimming World magazine. Kirsty joined Gaynor Budd’s group over six years ago to shed a few pounds before her impending marriage. She promptly shed over 2st and has successfully kept the weight off all this time. She said: “It’s one thing losing the weight, but it’s another keeping it off!. “Going to the group is so vital when you lose your weight because you get lots of support and encouragement from people who are all there for the same reason. I never went hungry at all because the food optimising is so flexible.” Kirsty’s story is featured in the issue and the magazine staff were so

impressed with her that they decided to feature her on the front cover! Gaynor Budd’s classes are held on Wednesdays at Hope Farm Community Centre. Call 210 1624 for details. l Gaynor Budd (left) with Kirsty Wilcox

After the success of taster workshops during the summer, local families can try out steel pan musical drums at free taster workshops this autumn. Steel pans are an acoustic musical instrument originating from Trinidad and Tobago in the 1930s. Their unique sound is often heard in street festivals like the Notting Hill Carnival. The next batch of workshops will run at

Trinity Methodist church on Wednesdays until 22nd October from 5pm to 6pm. The borough council’s arts development officer, Laura Orchard said: “The workshops will be a great opportunity to have fun as a family, meet new people, and try something new. The whole family could come along… grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, mums and dads are all welcome.” The project is part of the

Bogus caller warning WATCH out for bogus callers who might claim to be from the council’s finance department. The warning comes in the wake of several incidents in the area involving bogus telephone callers demanding bank account details from residents on the pretext that council tax payments can be claimed or refunded. The borough council is also warning people to be cautious of door-to-door fish salesman after an Ellesmere Port couple were conned out of £400. In one incident David Moulton of Whitby, paid a doorstep salesman £400 only to later discover that the fish he had bought was poor quality and not the quantity described. Mr Moulton said: “The chap was very plausible. It was only when we opened a packet of the plaice that it was immediately apparent that it was terrible quality. I wouldn’t even give it to my dog.”

HOMELESS CATS GALLERY Can you provide a good home for a cat?

The Great Sutton Cat Rescue, run by Gina Randall, finds homes for dozens of stray cats every year - and they need your help to accommodate these moggies. William is a gorgeous four years old tabby and white lad and a proper lapcat. William is initially shy with strangers but would probably be suited to a family with older sensible children, as he loves affection. He is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped.

Chloe, only a baby herself, came into rescue already heavily pregnant. She will be available around mid October when she has finished with her maternal duties of feeding her four kittens. She is already neutered and will be vaccinated and microchipped before moving to a new home. She is a sweet little girl with gorgeous eyes and would be suitable for a family with older children.

Barnie (or Tufty) was found as a stray and handed into the vets. He has the most endearing little white tufts of fur in his ears, otherwise being an all black boy, about five months old.

COMMUNITY

Maurice, another black boy, was found on the outskirts of Delamere Forest as a small kitten. He is now between 5 and 6 months old and just had a small part of his tail amputated as an old injury to the tip would not heal. Both Barnie and Maurice are fully vaccinated, “snipped and chipped”. They need to find a quiet home without children and it would be lovely if they could stay together as they are inseparable play mates. Barnie is quite a shy timid boy while Maurice is very affectionate and loving.

24

There are also several other cats in care still looking for loving and quiet homes. Please note that all potential homes will be vetted and a donation is requested at the time of homing to enable Cat Rescue to continue helping the stray cats and their kittens.

Review: Made in Liverpool, at the Whitby Sports Club

Tribute band are the genuine article THERE are so many Fab Four tribute bands all over the world but few could surely match the authenticity of ‘The Beatles Made in Liverpool’. The Wirral band were formed in November 2006, from members of two different Beatles tribute bands: The Fab Four and The No 1 Beatles to create a hybrid of the best with the same vocal intonation as The Beatles themselves. We checked them out at the Whitby Club on 13th September to see if they lived up

Free Pilates classes

FREE beginners Pilates classes take place every Wednesday 2-2.45pm at the Conservative Club, on Westminster Road, Ellesmere Port. The exercise helps body conditioning, relaxation, coordination, stamina, alignment, breathing, Concentration, centering and flowing movements. Pilates is best described as a mixture of body conditioning to strengthen the muscles (particularly the deep core muscles), address posture and reduce unnecessary tension in the body with stretching to lengthen the muscles. It is a workout that recognises individual needs and builds strength in the postural muscles, which stabilise the torso. To book, call Dora at: EPIC Leisure Centre on 0151 350 0918

to the hype. After a lengthy sound check the lads sprang into action with a superb version of Hard Day’s Night. Some tribute bands look but don’t sound like their idols but that’s not an accusation that can be levelled at Made in Liverpool. Although their look and mannerisms are uncannily like the Fab Four, it’s the musicianship and vocals that make the big difference. Other favourites followed, including I Feel Fine, Anything that you Want and Help which got the packed audience mouthing along with the lyrics. A fab night was had by all. Check out the Whitby Club on Saturday nights for more top bands. This month: Band with no Name on 11th October and Dublin Street on 25th October.

Family’s vision brings hotel to life

ENTERTAINMENT

MONTHS of hard work have brought the Woodcote Hotel into the 21st century Ingrid and John McFerran, along with their daughter Katie, have transformed the once neglected building into a fabulous venue fit for any function. After spending four years at a hotel in Wiltshire, they have moved back up to the Wirral to take on a new challenge at the Woodcote. When they moved into the venue on Hooton Road back in April, they had little idea of the task facing them. They have spent £500,000 completely refurbishing the interior to give it a more modern look without changing the character of the building. “Initially we thought it might take six weeks to do all the work but it has actually been five months!” said Ingrid. “We’ve fitted new bedrooms, completely redecorated, rewired, replumbed and reroofed the building.”

28

Now that the work has been completed, the 16-bedroom hotel looks amazing. From the outside, very little has changed to the attractive building. But once inside, guests are greeted by

Ingrid McFerran, Sue Adams and Katie McFerran clean and modern decor, which has been designed by Katie. Ingrid says: “Our vision has been to create a classical look with modern and retro touches – but we’re keen that it doesn’t look pretentious.” The main function room has a bar and lounge area with luxurious leather sofas as well as a large dining area looking out onto the garden. Food and beverage manager Sue Adams has made a huge impact, bringing in two top chefs who are producing stunning dishes as well as their own home made bread! The bedrooms are modern and individually decorated with en suite facilities, flat screen TV and stylish soft furnishings. It’s a new era for the Woodcote and under the new owners the future looks as bright as the new decor!

New bands on stage at The Bull It’s an exciting time at The Bull, in Great Sutton, after the pub had a major makeover. The premises were closed for five weeks over the summer so that safety work could be carried out. Now that the work is complete, customers can expect to see some top bands at the pub, including many making their first appearance in Ellesmere Port. Licensee May Boden said: “The pub looks great now and very trendy, I would like to apologise to those of you who came to see the Blondie tribute, but the floor in the lounge had some very large bumps in it and would have been dangerous to customers so I had to close the lounge for safety reasons. “We’ve got some great bands coming up

so if you haven’t been to the Bull we look forward to seeing you soon.” They will be having a quiz on Tuesdays starting in the next few weeks, and the Blondie tribute will be rebooked. Among the bands on stage are Killing Times who do songs from the Arctic Monkeys, Green Day, The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, White Stripes, The Jam, Oasis and Stereophonics.

Ashleigh battles back from horrific accident

So this year he has been forced to give up the bike and turn his attention to karts. The season has gone brilliantly so far and at the meeting at Hooton Park on 14th September he battled his way back up to win the rookie / novice award despite being knocked off by a more experienced driver. Chris Taylor, whose progress we have followed all year, had a 4th place finish in the final after suffering engine problems Chris is still leading the championship by seven points with two meetings to go.

SPORT

TALENTED kart driver Ashleigh Byron has enjoyed a fantastic debut season. The 18-year-old from Armthorpe Drive, in Little Sutton, has had three ‘best novice’ wins from just six races. What makes his achievement all the more remarkable is that Ashleigh has fought back from a potentially lifethreatening accident. Watching him fly round the Hooton Park kart track at speeds of 70mph it’s hard to believe that Ashleigh has a replacement hip. A keen motocross rider, he was keen to race on two wheels rather than four. But that all changed last year when he was struck by a BMW while he was marshalling at a track day at Aintree Racecourse. The high powered car lost control and ploughed into Ashleigh, leaving him with serious pelvic injuries. He was in intensive care for several weeks and eventually had to have a hip replacement operation.
