SHOWING SOME GRIT IN COLDEST WINTER with the Rev Andy Glover

So far the winter of 2009 has been one of the coldest we’ve had for a while in fact we haven’t seen so much across the UK since 1991. Much of this show has been heavy, causing chaos and disruption. I must admit to some feelings of disappointment that Chester has really seen the volumes of snow in other parts of the UK but I’m sure many of you are pleased and relieved we haven’t!! One of the results of all this snow and ice is that we are being told that Andy Glover has lived in the “gritting salt” that is used on the roads to Hoole with his wife Sue keep them clear of snow and ice is running out! The for 20 years. Andy began results of this will be mean very dangerous driving at Hoole Baptist Church, conditions.

on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before Here in Cheshire we have one of the three main UK mines the Winsford Rock Salt Mine so we should know how important becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader. salt is. Salt is a biological necessity of human life. The importance of salt in our lives cannot be overstated. Without salt, our bodies cannot perform some of the vital functions like regulating blood and body fluids and maintaining nerve signals. Salt deficiency leads to muscular weakness, cramps and exhaustion. Severe salt deprivation can even prove fatal.

In ancient times, salt (or the lack of it) could drastically affect the health of entire populations. Trade in salt was very important, and salt was valuable enough to be used as currency in some areas. Such was the importance of salt that the words, ‘war’ and ‘peace’ originate from the word for salt & bread in Ancient Hebrew and Arabic - The first war that mankind initiated was most probably over ‘salt’ supplies. The Bible list over 50 references to salt, many of them a positive reference; in fact it was Jesus who called his followers “the salt of the earth.” Salt flavours and preserves and can be an influence in so many ways, as we can see on our roads and pavements at the moment, to run out of salt can have disastrous consequences. The 4 major pillars of our society the Economy, the Family, Education and Law and Government all need to be flavoured, persevered and influenced by “the salt of the earth”, if we lose this saltiness there can be terrible consequences here too as we have seen! Whether it here in Hoole or across the country as a whole, the role of the church, and by this I mean the followers of Jesus, is to be the salt that preserves and flavours our communities as salt we are to Seek Always Love and Truth,

FOCUS ON HOOLE RANGERS FC

Struggling Rangers pay the penalty The Hoole Rangers team who lost 2-0 to Castrol Social last month at Hoole Park. The outcome might have been diffferent if a first half penalty had been converted. The team are having a rough time of it this season, languishing at the bottom of the Queensferry Sports Premier Division of the Chester Football League but with nearly half the fixtures remaining they still have the chance to turn things around.

l AN organic food store in Hoole has fallen victim to the economic downturn. Organicfair, based on Hoole Bridge, is likely to close on Saturday 14th March due to the decline in consumer spending. Owner Mark Holme has been trading in organically grown and fair trade produce for the last nine years but he has blamed the credit crunch and the closure of Hoole Bridge last year for the demise of the business.

Strength Training for Women with Verve Health & Fitness Vital lean tissue is lost with increasing age, leading to a range of problems. Many women believe strength training will make them look like a muscle bound beefcake – don’t worry, it won’t! Strength training is extremely beneficial for the following reasons: Fat Loss: An increase in lean muscle tissue will increase your metabolic rate, and so promote fat loss. Osteoporosis: Weight bearing exercise increases bone osteoblast activity, so strengthening them and reducing the risks of fractures and bone weakening as you age. Posture: Women are at risk of developing bad posture due to many factors, including pregnancy, large breasts, ill fitting shoes, heavy handbags and a seated occupation. Specific strength training balances the body, targeting individual problem areas. Strong Joints: Strengthening the muscles around joints protects them, reducing the risk of joint problems and injury, especially in the knees.

Reduced risk of Heart Disease & Type II Diabetes: Strength training has a preventative and healing effect on both illnesses. By increasing the body’s lean muscle tissue, metabolic rate is increased, protein reserves are elevated and functional mobility is improved. Body Image: Women today find themselves under increased pressure to conform to media driven feminine ideals. Strength training will help you to maximise the potential of the body that nature has given you, without the need of fad diets and hours spent on the treadmill. You will feel more toned, more confident and more healthy, with strength training. VERVE Health & Fitness offer sole use of their private studio for 1-2-1 training and nutritional advice. For all ages and all fitness levels. For a FREE consultation call Rachel B on 07866 034356 or Rachel F on 07887 572396.

Hoole History Corner

Len Morgan describes how hoole developed from its origins in roman times

Early Hoole

I

N 43AD the Romans invaded Britannia. One of the forts that they built was Deva on a rocky outcrop on the River Dee. The Romans, who were famous road builders, built the first road network in Britain, including Watling Street, the London to Chester road which Hoole/Flookersbrook in the early part of the 20th century led up Boughton to Eastgate Street. Another important Roman settlement was at Frodsham, so to transport centurions and goods between the two, the Roman army built a new road. This road travelled straight through Hoole and still exists today yet many people never knew of its existence. The road travels out of Chester on to Frodsham Street, on to Cow Lane to Brook Street and across the railway into Hoole to the Ermine pub (now the Flookersbrook). The road then carries on through Flookersbrook on to Kilmorey Park, across Newton Lane on to the Hollows then through to Hoole Bank. The road has been diverted along this route yet the part in Hoole is faithful to the original. During the 12th century, after Edward I had subdued the Welsh, the citizens of Chester started to build their houses on the outside of the city walls as far as Hoole Heath. This was when the small village of Flookersbrook first appeared. However, the general state of Hoole Heath was appalling. The monkish chronicler Lucian states that ‘if you go a little way from Chester.... the road to the left (Frodsham Street) leads to a place called the Valley of the Demons, so called because of those who lie in it... the wanderer.... is despoiled by thieves and robbers’. With the growth of Chester, the town needed extra supplies of fuel, food and goods for markets. The citizens had common pasture for their cattle on Hoole Heath all year round. An inquisition of 1342 found that ‘all lawful men of the Earl of Chester and the King of England.... in times of war in Wales to have refuge on Hoole Heath for a year and a day’. It was also said that anyone who could build a dwelling with a smoking chimney in the space of one night could stay on the Heath for one year and a day without molestation. By the 14th century however, lawlessness was rampant. A secular sanctuary was set up at Hoole Heath, yet it was only of use to criminals and debtors. The lease on the avowry was a huge sm, £40 in 1309 reducing to £18 in 1360, yet the avowry man was paid only 4d per annum. Local folklore has it that the Hollows was haunted (anyone who has ever walked along them in the evening will know how eerie they are). Hundreds of sightings of a large, black, slavering dog with ‘great whie teeth like knives’ are reported as seen along here. The dog is called the Hound of Hell and it is very unfortunate to meet it! For this reason the Fraternity of St Anne’s set up a ‘cross’ at the head of St Anne’s Lakes (the Lakes were where Flookersbrook gardens are today by the pub). The ‘cross’ was not a true cross yet it was here that travellers stopped and prayed for protection from the devils ahead. The cross was part of a medieval statue which offended a noblewoman in Clwyd. The statue was tried and found guilty and hung! The rope broke so the statue was thrown into the River Dee where it washed up on the Groves. Part was buried at St John’s Church and the rest was set up by St Anne’s Lakes, yet no one has seen it since the Civil War.

spring is on its way

Gardening by Janet Heath

HOPEFULLY spring will be on the way in March and plants will be starting to grow. There are jobs to do in the garden such as pruning roses and wisteria. Rose bushes can be pruned to an outward facing bud on last year’s shoots. Cut back to about six buds and remove any spindly weak shoots completely. As roses need a lot of feeding to grow well, feed with a rose fertilizer and add a layer of mulch 2 inches deep around the roots. Once established, wisteria should be pruned twice a year, in late summer to reduce the long stems and in winter prune back to 3 to 6 inches on last years growth. Cutting back the long leafy stems in summer should help to promote flowering buds rather than leafy stems. Shrubs such as dogwoods (Cornus) that are grown for their coloured stems in winter can be cut back hard in March. Prune to about 6 inches tall, to allow them to put on new growth for next winter. Feed them with a general purpose fertilizer. I usually start sowing tomato seeds indoors on my windowsill in March. Sow three or fours seeds in a 3inch

pot, cover with a plastic bag to keep the heat in and wait for the plants to grow. Pot on into individual pots when the second set of true leaves have formed. Snowdrops and crocuses should have finished flowering and are best planted “in the green” which means whilst they are still in leaf. So if you have large clumps to split or want to buy some, now is a good time to plant them out. You can buy snowdrops still with their foliage in March and these are more likely to flower than dried bulbs. The ornamental currant (Ribes) is often one of the first shrubs of spring and will give pink flowers before the leaves come out. Plant it alongside forsythia for a colourful spring show of flowers in March and April. If you have the energy, mulch around your plants with a layer of well rotted manure about 2 inches deep. This will gradually be taken into the soil and help build up fertility over the years. Janet Heath – The Garden Mentor Tel 01244 318258 [email protected]

INVESTMENT AND THE OBAMA EFFECT By Simon Dangar WITH Barack Obama becoming the 44th U.S. President, nothing is likely to be exercising his mind more than the global financial crisis. For anyone with an investment portfolio, his election and the actions he takes are of paramount importance. As a nation, America has always set the global economic agenda. The country Obama inherits may be in recession and have triggered the turmoil in the financial markets in the first place, but with its economy larger than that of the 15 countries in the Eurozone (Source: International Herald Tribune 11 November 2008), recovery in Asia and Europe will be determined by the speed with which he turns the situation around at home. For investors trying to read the runes, his election could be good news. Historical data shows that the US stock market has risen much faster under a Democratic president than a Republican. (Source: Guardian, 5 November 2008). A phalanx of US fund managers and analysts have expressed their first thoughts on the likely immediate impact Obama might make. One was quoted as expecting Obama to move decisively and show the world the US was taking the lead to tackle the immediate economic issues; another predicted a more aggressive approach to dealing with the crisis which could be seen by investors as providing more confidence in an eventual economic recovery. (Source: Asian Investor 10 November 2008). The speed with which he can deliver a rebound at home will help determine the recovery in Europe and Asia. The International Herald Tribune commented (5 November 2008) that US leadership of the global crisis was needed because of the dilution of power elsewhere – the European Union comprising 27 countries with their own individual governments, and Asia having no umbrella organisation at all. And following the initial G20 summit of world leaders from the major developed and developing economies in Washington to seek new solutions on the financial markets and the world economy, Obama welcomed the move, saying: “Our global economic crisis requires a co-ordinated global response.” (Source: Guardian 15 November 2008). The G20 is to reconvene in April, with Obama attending for the first time. So what does it all mean for investors? No one, of course, has a crystal ball to show what the Obama presidency will deliver but as ever, the secret of successful and profitable investment has always been to take the long-term view. It should be borne in mind that recession is not always bad for stock markets, with both the UK and US markets having

risen in three of the last four recessions. In a bear market dominated by recession, UK shares have at times been priced more cheaply than at any time in the past 20 years. The economist and journalist Anatole Kaletsky said: “Every financial crisis and bear market in the past has been a buying opportunity because we can see with hindsight that the world never did come to an end.” (Source: Times 28 February 2008). The world is so uncertain that no one can make decisions based on short-term conditions – investments must always be regarded as long term commitments. History is very much on the side of the investor who looks at the long term value of equities. In any medium to long-term investment strategy, the only prices that are ever going to matter are the ones you buy at and sell at. Never has that old dictum ‘time in the market, not timing the market’ been more apt than during the current turmoil in the financial world. In addition, drip-feeding money into volatile markets reduces the worry of investing at the wrong time and can benefit the long-term investor. And with the current short-term uncertainty, investors should always be looking at diversification, spreading capital over different types of investment with varying characteristics, and selected from a variety of countries, sectors and shares in order to spread the risk as widely as possible. While the new President and other world leaders wrestle with the global financial issues during 2009, a measured long-term view on investment, guided by specialist advice and coupled with investment products and fund managers you can trust remains the key to a successful future financial strategy. New footbridge for Hoole? A NEW footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists is needed to complement Hoole Bridge, according to a county council report The report states that the road is too narrow for a bike and two cars to pass at the same time. Plans for a new multi storey car park at the station will increase the number of vehicles using the bridge which is heavily used during the day by 21,000 cars, 3,000 pedestrians and 300 cyclists. Among the options being looked at by the council include Widening the south footway and reducing the opposite footway at a cost of £570,000. The road would need to be closed for 18 weeks or alternatively a single lane closure for 24 weeks. A separate 2.5 wide footbridge with the existing footways converted to cycleways resulting in a £1,980,000 project. Short

duration road closures would be needed to lift in sections of the footbridge. A separate 2.5 metre wide footbridge with widened road providing greater room for cyclists with an estimate cost of £2,660,000. The road would need to be closed for 18 weeks or have a single lane closure for 24 weeks. A separate 3 metre wide combined footway/ cycleway bridge. The disadvantage of the scheme is that cyclists heading east out of the city would have to cross the road to continue their journey. The cost of this option would be £2,180,000. Short duration road closures would be needed to lift in sections of the bridge. County Councillor Eveleigh Moore-Dutton said: “We place before the new council four possible answers to the worrying dilemma of how to improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.”
