M&S inquiry: PLANS for a massive Marks and Spencer at Cheshire Oaks go
before a public inquiry this month. The 150,000sq ft store, to be situated next to the David Lloyd fitness centre, has the support of the local council but the plans have been called in by the Secretary of State. M&S have promised that the development will not affect existing stores in Chester. But there are certain concerns that it could further increase the pulling power of Cheshire Oaks to the detriment of Ellesmere Port and Chester.

Eden serves up another trophy to her collection
6
TENNIS starlet Eden Richardson looks like she will have to get a bigger trophy cabinet! Ten-year-old Eden won the North of England tournament last month beating the top players from the region. Her mum Lesley said: “We’re really proud of her. She works really hard on her game every day and this is what she wants to do. “It’s got to the stage now where we can’t even practice with her because she is so good. We can’t even see the balls as they whizz past us!” In last month’s tournament she had to win in the hard way. Eden beat the number one seed 6-4, 6-4 in the semi final and then triumphed 6-3, 7-5 in the final against the number two seed. Eden, who attends Capenhurst Primary School, has got a busy summer lined up with tournaments up and down the country. This month Eden takes part in the Spring Nationals, which she won last year, and later in the summer she will enter the British Nationals. Eden, who lives in Stanney Oaks, currently trains at the Wrexham Tennis Academy under the tutelage of former world ranked player Matt Smith, from Heswall. Her favourite surface is clay, which suits her strong groundstrokes but she is also quite handy at the net. If there are any companies who would like to sponsor Eden, please contact Keep it Local and we will put you in touch with her mum Lesley.

Goody bags make studying easier
8
SHELL Global Solutions based at Thornton provided almost 300 Whitby High School students with a revision goody bag to help them during their GCSE study leave. The bags were filled with essential items including a booklet on revision techniques, a drinks bottle to help prevent dehydration and improve concentration levels, and an assortment of other goodies. External affairs advisor Jane Davis said: “Studying is never easy and even more so during the warmer months. When the school approached me with the idea of providing a goody bag as a revision aid I thought it was a fantastic idea and jumped at the chance to help.” Deputy headteacher Bryn Heeley said: “Our staff and students have worked incredibly hard this year. The opportunity to reward this hard work with the materials contained within these goody bags will, I hope, enable the best preparation possible for our students. I would like to thank Shell for becoming involved and supporting Whitby High School in this venture.” Jane Davis, right, is pictured with former Shell employee Steve Paulson, left, deputy headteacher Bryn Heeley, centre, and four of the student recipients of the Shell revision goody bags. Strong opposition to care scheme at former school
12
PLANS for an Extra Care Housing development on the former Gorsthills school site in Great Sutton, have been put on hold. Planners have asked the developers to reduce the mass of the proposed building on Berry Drive. Councillors also wanted more information on traffic flows and the commercialisation of services offered to residents and the local community Members heard from a local resident and Councillors Kimberley Anderson, Bob Crompton and Graham Smith. “I am 150 percent behind my residents and strongly object to this scheme” said Councillor Anderson “I am very concerned because there are protection orders on trees on the site and according to this plan some will be cut down.” Cllr Crompton said: “Despite what developers say it is a four storey block of flats in an area of two storey houses. We do not object to extra care housing but to the scale and size of the project.” Cllr Smith said the plan was out of character with the area and pointed to the 45 parking spaces: “There would be 106 residents, a staff of 12 and 8 spaces for visitors. “Car parking is inadequate and will
result in over-spilling into nearby streets.” Head of Social Care Provision Mick Howarth said that Extra Care Housing was a key strategy for Cheshire West and Chester Council to meet the growing older population and it was important to note that that the Gorsthills project was one of four schemes– two in Cheshire West and Chester and two in Cheshire East. The loss of a single scheme could potentially jeopardise Government funding for all four. The plans contain proposals for 87 apartments – 46 available for rent and 41 for sale and shared ownership. There will be care provided 24 hours on site in addition to a wide range of facilities to promote ‘active ageing’ including a health suite, craft and activity room, library and internet access as well as a restaurant and hairdressers. Committee member Councillor Reggie Jones told the meeting: “There is clearly a lot of emotion running with this application. I think we should sit here and work out how to make it happen instead of dismissing it. “A four storey building is too much and we don’t really need to refuse it but ask officers to carry out a review and then resubmit the plans.”

Volunteers take that Friday feeling to Africa
14
VOLUNTEERS from Ellesmere Port who recently worked on sports projects with schools and community groups in Gambia held a celebration event last month to tell sponsors and supporters of the work they did. The volunteers are from the award-winning multi sports club Friday Night Fever, made up of young people aged 11 to16 and run by volunteers aged 14 to 25. Members take part in cheerleading, football, basketball, handball, dodgeball, badminton, trampolining and many other activities at Stanney Oaks Leisure Centre. The club traveled to the Gambia earlier this year as part of the Gunjur Project 2009, which allows young people from the UK and other counties to experience Gambian life while volunteering and providing valuable opportunities to local communities and schools. The Ellesmere Port club raised over £8,400 to fund the project and the group worked with local community groups, schools and nursery schools delivering multi-sport sessions. Cheshire West and Chester Council youth sport development officer, Michelle Aspden, said: “Friday Night Fever is a dedicated, enthusiastic and exciting club, which strives to challenge members and provide opportunities, not only in Ellesmere Port, but abroad as well. The volunteers who traveled to west Gambia practiced their coaching and leadership skills weekly at the Friday Night Fever club, which prepared them for their adventure. “They worked with Kasa Kunda primary school, two community football academies, Brikama basketball team, Gunjur upper basic school and Gunjur nursery school. The young volunteers led sessions based on fun filled multi-sports activity to develop team work, community spirit and communication. “The team took equipment and simple session plans with them that were left with each group enabling the Gambian communities to carry on with the Friday Night Fever approach.” Friday Night Fever Volunteers delivering multi sport activity at Kassa Kunda Primary School, Gambia. 14th June 1982: the end of the Falklands war
