Penny Farthing revisited
8
THIS year sees the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Penny Farthing folk club which used to meet every Sunday evening at The Travellers Rest in Little Sutton. The club opened its doors on the 16th November 1969 and at its peak had a membership in excess of two thousand, with regular full house audiences in the region of 120. Guest singers included, in no particular order, Ralph McTell, Martin Carthy, Christie Moore, Barbara (then Babs) Dickson, Willie Russell, Leon Rosselson, Diz Disley, and many more ‘big names’ in folk music. To mark the occasion “40 years on” the original Penny Farthing duo of Les Jones and Russ Dumbill along with Andy Chrimes, who took over in 1970 when a change of career caused Les to move away from the area, are planning a reunion concert to take place on Saturday 15th November, 8pm, at the Boat Museum, in Ellesmere Port. A fourth member, Grant Dawson is now living in Canada but has remained in touch and who knows.... Many of the local singers who visited and performed at the club are still playing today and attempts are currently taking place to contact everyone who was involved in the early days. Many will remember The Penny Farthing folk group thanks to their efforts in May 1969 in aid of the Liverpool University Biafra famine appeal, by singing a couple of songs in every pub and club within the borough of Ellesmere Port in seven days, raising a grand total of £90.00 together with the proceeds of a charity concert held and sponsored by The Waverley club on the final night. The club ran its own football team which played in the Ellesmere Port and District Sunday Senior league division one; and a ladies five-a-side team which participated twice in the borough sports festival at Whitby park. Much of the success of the club was down to enthusiasm, yet it has to be said, The Pioneer played a major part in its success, publicising all the events, courtesy of their (then young) reporter, Kevin Tee, without whose input ‘the word’ may not have spread so quickly. Further details of the commemorative concert will, of course, be publicised but anyone with interest, comments or suggestions can contact Russ on (0151) 339 6604 or 336 2794 or by email to

Ian’s old band Pele to reform
10
IAN Prowse is to reform his old band Pele for two shows this summer. Ian, who is the front man for Ellesmere Port band Amsterdam, is reuniting the five original members of Pele who enjoyed success in the nineties. The original members will play together for the first time in 16 years this summer to recreate those glorious shows between 1991-1995. All five are getting together one more time to re-live those sweaty nights at the Royal Court, Irish Centre, Adelphi Ballroom and Mountford Hall. The Liverpool show is part of the Summer Pops season and will take place on Saturday 25th July. Tickets are on sale now from o2academyliverpool.co.uk. The London show will be a week later at the Water Rats theatre in Kings Cross on Saturday 1st August. Ticket information will be released later this week. Police hunt for fly tipping duo caught on camera

CHESHIRE West and Chester Council is asking for information in relation to a flytipping incident in Ellesmere Port. Two men were filmed dumping waste in Stanney Mill Lane, Little Stanney, on 10th May. The video evidence clearly shows the men unloading wheelie bins from a white van, registration OV51 HNA, and dumping the contents on the side of a road near Junction 10 of the M53. The first man is of slim build with brown hair and is wearing a checked shirt and jeans. The second man has greying hair and is wearing a black t-shirt and jeans. The video can be viewed on the Council’s YouTube Channel at: www.youtube.com/ cheshirewest Cllr Neil Ritchie, Environment Portfolio Holder, explained: “I would urge anyone who knows these men, or thinks they have seen them, to contact us. This can be done anonymously and any information will be treated in the strictest of confidence.” He added: “Unfortunately checks on the vehicle have not helped us to identify them, so information about the white van would also be helpful to the investigation. Perhaps you owned it previously, or have seen a similar van acting suspiciously in your area? “However insignificant you think your information it might be, I would urge you to make contact.”

High schools make way for new academy
COUNCIL chiefs have taken the decision to close two high schools in Ellesmere Port by the end of August this year. It now paves the way for an Academy to open on the sites of Cheshire Oaks High School, a Specialist Sports College, and Ellesmere Port Specialist School of Performing Arts from September. Executive Member for Children’s Services Arthur Harada said after the meeting: “We took great care to study all the information before us before making our decision which we believe will be a massive opportunity for Ellesmere Port and lead to a multi million pound investment in education to benefit children and young people for generations to come.
“The Academy will operate on both school sites from September until its new building is opened, possibly in three years’ time. “All three sponsors – the lead sponsor the University of Chester together with the Church of England Diocese and ourselves - will be working hard to bring success to the Academy.” The closure of the two High Schools was voted through unanimously by Executive Members including an amendment
from Council Leader Mike Jones who thanked the two Headteachers and teaching staff for their work in achieving improved results at a time of uncertainty through the consultation process. The new Academy will specialise in Maths, Sports and Performing Arts. All current pupils on roll of the two schools at the time of closure will automatically be eligible for transfer to the Academy in the new academic year starting this September.

Laura is new Forces sweetheart
18
SINGER Laura Critchley performed the role of Forces sweetheart when she visited the British troops in Iraq. Laura, from Little Sutton, flew out to Basra to meet the UK troops out there and do a few impromptu performances with legendary UK musician and promoter Tony Moore from the Bedford Bandstand. During the two day visit she went on all sorts of trips around the camp to see how the troops got on out there. She was also asked to perform at some of the homecoming gigs in the UK. The 24-year-old’s work with the troops didn’t stop there. When the 3 Battalion REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) returned to their barracks in Germany, after a long stint in Iraq, Laura was there to hand out medals Laura releases her next single Feel Proud on 6th July. It was written with the UK troops in mind and profits go to the Help for Heroes charity. True story: The World’s longest sausage was 13 miles long.

HOMELESS CATS GALLERY
Can you provide a good home for a cat?
The Great Sutton Cat Rescue, run by Gina Randall, finds homes for dozens of stray cats every year - and they need your help to accommodate these moggies. Pepsi Pepsi arrived on a lady’s doorstep and a few days later gave birth to four beautiful kittens. The kittens will go to new homes shortly and Pepsi needs to find a home* of her own. She is a gorgeous shorthair black girl and will be spayed, vaccinated and microchipped before moving into a new home. She will be available around the end of June and is looking for a quiet home where she can be pampered as an only cat. Pepsi is only young herself, no older than 2 years.

Treacle and Fidget Treacle and Fidget need to be placed urgently because of their owner’s ill health. They do not need to stay together. Treacle, an 11 year old neutered beauty, is very gentle and can be a little timid. She would be best suited to a retired person or couple. A loving home with access to a back garden would be preferred, but she never ventures far from home. Treacle deserves a loving, calm and quiet home where she can enjoy her twilight years.

Pepper Pepper is a 6 year old tabby, neutered and vaccinated. He is friendly, very good natured boy and likes a bit of a fuss – but on his terms! He likes to feel safe and spends a lot of time looking out of windows watching the world go by! He is litter trained and happy to spend time outside as long as there is somewhere to hide. He would suit a fairly quiet house, preferably somewhere with a garden and with people who have time to lavish on him. Pepper needs to be in an environment without children or other pets.
There are also several other cats in care still looking for loving and quiet homes. * Please note that all potential homes will be vetted and a donation is requested at the time of homing to enable Cat Rescue to continue helping the stray cats and their kittens.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett Q. I have unwanted facial hairs. Is electrolysis permanent? A. Yes it most certainly is! However, there are a variety of factors which influence the effectiveness of electrolysis. Firstly, the skill of the operator – electrolysis is a very skilled technique which takes a long time to perfect so always visit a well-qualified and experienced practitioner for this treatment. Secondly, ‘permanent’ should not be confused with ‘instant’ – many people assume that the treatment will quickly solve their hair growth problems, but electrolysis does take time to be effective so be patient and stick to your treatment plan as advised by your therapist. Thirdly, the cause of your hair growth problems and how you have been removing the hairs previously will have an enormous influence on how effective the treatment is so ensure that you visit a practitioner who takes the time to carry out a consultation process to fully understand your problem and gives you a realistic likely outcome of the treatments. Q. I find that now I am older if I wear mascara on my lower eyelashes by the end of the day the mascara is smudged under my eyes. What can I do to prevent this? A. The obvious answer would be to wear a waterproof and smudgeproof mascara, but these can be damaging for your eyelashes if worn too frequently. You have probably found that as you are ageing your lower eyelashes are becoming more sparse anyway and wearing mascara often just highlights the fact that you have fewer eyelashes. I would always recommend using an eye pencil applied carefully very close to the lower lashes instead of mascara to give the illusion of a full lower lash line. The pencil can be ‘set’ by running a small amount of dark brown matte eyeshadow with a fine brush to prevent the pencil from creeping down your face over the course of the day. If you are unsure about applying this technique visit your local beauty salon for an eye makeup lesson.

Angela is also part of the HABIA forum, helping to make decisions for qualifications and standards in the UK beauty industry. JULY IN YOUR GARDEN Gardening by Janet Heath HOPEFULLY this summer will be sunny so we can enjoy our gardens whether it is dining outside or just lounging about in the sun. Some herbs are great for adding to summer cooking. Mint is wonderful when added to Pimms and lemonade or pop a sprig in the pan when cooking new potatoes or peas. There are many different varieties of mint but grow in a pot or confined to an area where it can be contained, as many of them will invade your garden. In the vegetable garden, plant out winter leeks and brassicas such as broccoli and sprouts. Sow salads and French beans for a late crop. Do net fruit such as strawberries and blueberries. I tried to grow blueberries last year and had a crop developing nicely until the birds ate every one just before they ripened! Raspberries seem to be largely immune probably as the fruit is not so easy for birds to eat. July is a great month for perennials and many come in bright colours so take a trip to your local garden centre or visit some of our wonderful gardens to see what is doing well in July. Achilleas are sun-loving flowering plants that come in a range of colours from yellow, orange and red. Anthemis with yellow or white daisy flowers will continue into August or even September if you cut off the dead flowers. Crocosmia are also at their best in July with their sword shaped leaves and spikes of red, yellow or orange flowers. They may well need some support. Cooler colours of white and blue often come to life in the evening and seem to have an inner glow in fading light. Try white dahlias with their varied flower shapes. Many hardy geraniums have white or blue flowers and some varieties will often flower twice if the first flowers are cut off after flowering. The same also applies to Centaurea Montana the perennial cornflower. Hydrangreas are one of the best shrubs for flowering in July with a range of flower shapes from delicate lacecap to huge mopheads and some with cones shaped flowers. They prefer moist soil and will take light shade but will also grow in full sun. Give them enough space to grow. They flower on last years wood so if you cut them back, you may not have flowers the next year. Janet Heath – The Garden Mentor Tel 01244 318258
