It’s celebration time for Keep it Local magazine. We have just notched up our first year in business. As the only community magazine in the town, our aim has been to give all the info you need for the entire month as well as encouraging people to use local services. The latter point is so important given the current economic downturn. By uniting local shops and tradesmen with customers on their doorstep we are helping to keep business in this area. Now, more than ever, is the time to support your local traders. The magazine is evolving all the time and we are continuing to increase the circulation to bring it to more people in the area. So we would like to say a big thank you to our advertisers who have supported us during the last 12 months. Most importantly, thank you to all our readers and for the many nice comments we have received. So here’s to the next 12 months!

Teamwork pays off for green-fingered staff
6
GREEN-fingered staff at Shell’s Technology Centre Thornton dug out their shovels and spades to help clear an overgrown area within the grounds of Trafford Hall in Wimbolds Trafford. Shell’s staff council, based at Thornton, were looking for a team-building event with a difference and decided that a community volunteering activity would be the way to go. When Trafford Hall, located on the company’s doorstep, mentioned that their driveway was in desperate need of attention the Shell team were eager to step up to the challenge. The National Communities Resource Centre, which occupies Trafford Hall, is a registered charity offering training and support to all those living and working in low-income areas. Trafford Hall’s head gardener Jo Dyer said: “We would like to thank the team from Shell for their fantastic efforts - they all worked really hard and with a smile. The approach to our car park is now looking great and everyone who comes to Trafford Hall will appreciate the improvements that have been made. Their work has helped us to improve an area of our grounds that really needed a face-lift and we couldn’t have done it without them.” SHELL staff council members are pictured working hard at Trafford Hall. They are, from left, Mike Jarvis; Diauddin Nammari; Cara Tredget; Holger Paesler; Esther Hulme and Sue Harper. Stanlow provides jobs for around 800 Shell people and a large number of contractors on site on a regular basis. Their salaries provide a boost for the local economies of the north west and help create further employment.

ELLESMERE Port Library is definitely the place to be with its brand new Youth Zone. It’s a place for chilling and chatting, computers and consoles with Wii and Playstation, a place to browse magazines, play games or even try something arty. The good news is that everything is free and you don’t have to be a member of the library to join in. The new Youth Zone was launched at a special session last week. The Youth Zone is a joint project between Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council and Cheshire County Council funded by the Big Lottery Fund as part of the local ‘Freedom to Play’ initiative. The zone will be open to young people aged 11-16 years every Monday, Thursday and Friday evening from 5pm7pm, with some of the facilities available during usual library hours.

CHRISTMAS can be a joyous time for most of us – but if someone special is no longer with us it can be difficult. This is one of the reasons why the Hospice of the Good Shepherd team are giving people the opportunity to remember someone special in a positive way by lighting up a life in their memory. Light up a Life is your chance to dedicate a light on one of the special trees as a memorial to a loved one, friend, neighbour or colleague. It is also a way of keeping their memory alive, even if they weren’t treated at the Backford hospice. Amanda Le Bretton, fundraising and marketing manager, said: “This has become a very special part of Christmas for local people when they have the opportunity to remember their loved ones with hope whilst helping to support
the highly specialised care provided to patients at the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.” Among those with a special reason to light up a life is Angela Upton (pictured), whose husband Dave lost his battle with cancer last year. Dave, who was 56, spent his final days at the hospice after his condition deteriorated. Angela said: “As soon as Dave arrived at Backford he could not believe how calming the place was and how the staff were so friendly and dedicated. “Dave loved the fact that we were able to sit in the beautiful courtyard together with our boys. “Light up a Life not only gives me the opportunity to remember Dave in a positive way, which is what he would have wanted, but helps me to focus on the happy times we shared.” The hospice will be holding a special remembrance service on Sunday 7th December, between 4pm and 6pm. If you would like to remember someone special this Christmas by dedicating a light in their memory please contact the fundraising team on 01244 851811, email info@hospicegs. com or visit the website at www. hospiceofthegoodshepherd.com

Royal approval for film maker Dave
A LOCAL camera crew got up close and personal with the Queen recently. Dave Bladen, who runs the Little Sutton-based Elite Video, had the opportunity to film Her Majesty while doing a documentary on the Duke of Lancaster Regiment. Dave, who specialises in corporate and wedding videography, worked on the project with fellow film makers Dan Fox, Chris Owen, Jody Rimell and Joe Fox (pictured). “With many film crews working for the British Army I felt very honoured to be selected as the only film company commissioned to produce such a prestigious DVD for 2,500 soldiers to have as a keepsake, said Dave. “Only one film cameraman was allowed to get up close to Her Majesty. “We had to stay about 10ft away while being ushered on as the Queen walked towards us. “Idid feel very special to have such a chance in my profession to one day filming a bride and groom then next the Queen of England.”

Cat rescue still going strong after 10 years - and 1,001 rescues A LOCAL cat rescue centre celebrated a major milestone last month. The Great Sutton Cat Rescue was founded in October 1998 and their 10th anniversary coincided poignantly with rescuing their 1000th cat, William. He has now been successfully rehomed as has their 1001st rescued cat Chloe thanks to being featured on the Homeless Cats Gallery page in “Keep it Local”. “Over the past decade we have often struggled financially and emotionally and are forever indebted to those friends and supporters who have given us help with both,” said
Gina Randall, who runs the centre.” Sadly, as during the early days of Cat Rescue, they are once more desperate to find fosterers to care for the homeless felines on a temporary or long term basis. They used to have eight volunteers but as individual circumstances change either through moving, new relationships or finding full time employment, they now find themselves without any active fosterer. “We are desperately looking for someone with hand-rearing experience or would love to hear from anyone who would like to discuss this important
role or indeed fostering in general,” added Gina. Food, litter and vet bills are carried by the rescue, TLC and a spare room are essential requirements which the fosterer needs to supply! To enable them to continue caring for the inmates already in care and those who will arrive on the doorstep in the future, they are organising a Christmas Fair at the Castrol Sports and Social Club on Saturday 29th November between 11.30am and 2.30pm. The Singing Hands Sign Choir will make a guest appearance.

Maurice and Barnie, not related but playmates at the rescue, between 6 and 7 months old, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, need a quiet home without young children.
14
Bramble, timid and traumatised after her owner was evicted from his home, needs a very quiet patient home. She is a tabby girl, 2-3 years old, vaccinated, chipped and neutered. Ripley and Jonesey, black and white brother and sister, approximately 18 months old, have been in rescue for over a year. Again, they are initially timid with strangers, but in particular Ripley is extremely affectionate. Her brother is
much more timid but they rely on each other, so need to be rehomed together. Quiet home without children sought. Smudge, ten years young, is looking for a retirement home to live out her twilight years. She is very affectionate and would be best suited as an only pet to a retired person or couple. She is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Pixie is on the waiting list. She lost her left back leg as a kitten but it does not curb her sense of adventure. She is used to older children and very affectionate. She is a tabby girl and has been neutered.

Look good and feel great this winter NOVEMBER is here, bringing with it colder weather, darker evenings, and coughs and colds. You may find that you develop an urge to hibernate in front of the TV through the colder darker months, nursing a box of biscuits, and a mug of cocoa. But no! You need to stay fit and healthy to prepare for the winter. The fitter and healthier you are, the more resistance you will have to colds and infections, and you will be less likely to suffer seasonal depression. Ignore this advice at your peril, or you may find yourself suffering from Christmas party blues; all of your best clothes have shrunk, and you have nothing to wear except your emergency jogging bottoms which are distinctly more saggy than sassy. Now is the time to re-evaluate your health and fitness; it isn’t too wet/cold/dark …. What’s your excuse? No more putting it off until next week, dust off those trainers, clean out the fridge and the cupboards, and prepare your body for winter! Active8 at EPIC Leisure Centre offers a friendly atmosphere; a fitness suite equipped with state of the art fitness equipment, swimming pools and a wide selection of group fitness classes. Why not come along & meet the Active8 or call them on 0151 355 6432 and start getting into shape for Christmas

Helping you move forward… THE Workability Plus Project, funded by the European Social Fund via the Learning and Skills Council, launched this Autumn in West Cheshire. It is designed to help local people back into work by way of short courses, 1-21 support and general assistance. Over the next two years it is expected that over 200 individuals will benefit from the project. Workability Plus Co-ordinator, Paul Barber, said ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to gain new skills and progress towards their work goals’. Aside from occupationally specific courses the project also has a selection of Personal Development training for anyone in need of confidence building and enhancement of general job search techniques. Amsterdam hit the road
ENTERTAINMENT
PORT band Amsterdam have announced their first headlining tour for over two years. The boys and girls are celebrating their best year yet, one which has seen them duet for EMI with Elvis Costello, release the new, brilliantly-received album Arm in arm and play the show of all shows at Glastonbury. The tour will be promoted by CMP, the people responsible for the Summer pops every year in Liverpool. It calls in at Gateshead, Wolverhampton, London, Stratford, Glasgow, York before ending in Liverpool.
32
This final date will be a celebratory end-of-year party with brilliant support from Little Sutton’s Laura Critchley, The Trestles and an as yet undisclosed main support act. This will be the biggest headlining date the gang has ever done so tell your friends, book your hotel
and polish up your voices: this is the big one! Mindful of present economic conditions the tickets for this event are being capped at the price of just £10! The gang would really love you to vote for Amsterdam in the big ‘Best Merseyside albums of all time poll’ currently running on liverpool.com. As well as supporting Amsterdam, Laura Critchley has a busy autumn lined up. A new 10 part series being aired by the Discovery Network in the UK, features the tracks “Sometimes I” and her new track “Butterfingers” as the intro and outro music for a new cooking show called “Glamour Puds”. Being produced by AFP (advertiser funded programming) specialists, The Last Word, the series is due to air from 8th November for 10 nights, on two of the Discovery Channels, and also on
TV3 in Ireland. This is Laura’s first synchronisation deal, and hopefully will the the first of many!
Laura was in Belfast recently at the Big Buzz Awards, one of Northern Ireland’s biggest award ceremonies, to sing and present an award. Little did she know that she had actually won the award for “Best Live Act” - for her performances earlier in the year at the Odyssey in Belfast, supporting Boyzone....
