IS LIFE FAIR? I DON’T know if you have ever said this “life sometimes is just not fair” I know I have! Situations and circumstances happen within the cause of life that really do seem unfair and at times pretty random. I sometimes wonder to myself why do bad things happen to good people? Why is it that for some individuals the course of life seems to be a very rocky path and for others ‘everything they touch turns to gold?’ During the summer I read the autobiography of Dawn French, I really enjoy reading about other people’s lives and what strikes me time and time again, and it happened in the life of Dawn French, is that an opportunity comes along in life where they seem to be in the right place at the right time and then they make a choice to embrace this opportunity. For many this choice leads them on a road to some degree of success with work and life. Looking from the outside this can seem unfair? Why do some people break out and move on from what life throws at them whilst others never seem to move on from particular difficult situations and circumstances. This got me thinking about the question, “what is fairness?”

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 20 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

Most of us would agree it involves issues of equality, impartiality, proportionality, openness and due process. Most would agree that it is unfair to handle similar matters inconsistently. Most would agree that it is unfair to impose punishment that is not commensurate with the offence. The basic concept seems simple, even intuitive, yet applying it in daily life can be surprisingly difficult. Even a superficial reading of the news and events over the past few week highlights many examples of unfairness and injustice; an accident on a motorway that kills 2 young men, the effects of Western global warming that causes flooding and droughts in third world countries Bangladesh; the loss of jobs in a car factory which will devastate the local economy; the deaths of British soldiers in Afghanistan; the sudden death of a family member from a heart attack.

How do we handle and deal with life when it seems at time so unfair. Fairness is one of the six pillars of character and together with trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, caring, and citizenship these are the values that form the basis for forming good character in a person. Fairness is described with phrases such as Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be openminded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly. Our character will always come to the fore whenever we are faced with a crisis or we have to deal with a situation of unfairness. One way to prepare is to make sure we make personal choice sand decision that treat others with fairness – we all need to take time out to consider our choices and decisions and their consequences. For me my faith is something I can draw upon to give me strength, like all of us I can sometimes wonder, “why did God let this happen?” and “where was God in that moment?” Faith enables me to see that God does care and he wants to draw near to us so we can begin to make sense of life and to understand I am not subject to fate and its random acts. Solutions are not the answer - Dan Quayle

The ultimate anti-ageing treatment Karen, from Hoole Roundabout, went along to Lilly Holistic to experience the CACI Ultra Facial treatment. The CACI ULTRA Facial has been described as the ultimate anti ageing treatment. I decided to have a facial for a big night out so I paid a visit to Fiona Bullard, at Lilly holistic to see if the claims were true. The first phase of the facial is a gentle ultra sound peel tol deep cleanse the skin and remove excess skin cells. The muscles are then lifted and toned using microcurrent, which was originally used on people with Bells Palsy and stroke victims to correct facial sagging and distortion. This will make you more youthful by re-educating the muscles, enabling them to become more toned and the facial contours more defined. The deep lines and wrinkles are tackled with a therapeutic laser light and microcurrent. Promoted as a non-invasive alternative to collagen injections, the treatment will stimulate production of the body’s own natural collagen, which decreases as we get older, helping to reduce those deeper lines and wrinkles. Finally, the skin is hydrated and moisturised with serums and moisturiser specifically beneficial to your skin’s needs. It leaves skin clearer, with an improved texture, lifting and toning muscles, softening lines and wrinkles, leaving the complexion glowing. It is not painful and is in fact quite relaxing. The treatment begins with a full consultation and face mapping to ensure suitability for treatment and to ensure maximum benefit from the treatment. I found the whole experience fantastic and Fiona was so professional throughout the treatment. My skin was glowing as a result and felt incredibly soft. I would certainly recommend it. Fiona has been a therapist for 15 years, starting out in the spa industry and working her way up to senior therapist of a 15 treatment-room spa. She then taught beauty and holistic therapy for two years at a Habia centre of excellence, before starting her own business in 2003. Fiona ensures that she is up to date with the latest treatments with regular training and she is a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists. You will see a noticeable difference after one treatment which will last up to 48 hours. For a more lasting result a course of 10 treatments is required, it’s £47 for one treatment and £420 for a course so they save £50. Fiona is offering a course of 10 microdermabrasion treatments with every course of CACI booked in October, so people will only pay £420 for £770 worth of treatments! By adding the two treatments together they’ll get an even better anti ageing result and this treatment was featured on the TV programme 10 Years Younger. The microdermabrasion will rejuvenate skin, brighten skin, help reduce sun damage, reduce wrinkles and stimulates collagen and a hydrating mask will be applied, to deeply hydrate and moisten skin.

IN THE NEWS Roadworks finish early: ENGINEERING work to replace National Grid gas

mains on Hoole Road finished two weeks and two days ahead of schedule. The work was carried out by North West Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Balfour Beatty which is working on several other locations in the city as part of their five year programme of works. Local Hoole and Newton Councillor Adrian Walmsley said: “When I was first informed of the roadworks I was very concerned about the impact they would have on residents and businesses in Hoole. “Last month I e–mailed the North West Gas Alliance to praise them for carrying out the work with such little disruption. It has exceeded all of our hopes and expectations.” The works are part of National Grid’s programme to modernise the city’s gas supply network by replacing 88 miles of century – old cast iron gas mains with modern Polyethylene pipes over a five year period. The new plastic pipes will ensure continued safe and reliable gas supplies for Chester and will last around 80 years if left   undisturbed once underground.   The North West Gas Alliance is at present working on the     A51 Vicar’s Cross Road, the A5268 Nicholas Street in the   city centre, the A41 Whitchurch Road near Haslin Cresent in Christleton where work is underway including Durban Avenue.   Work is also taking place at Hoole’s Greenbank Road and   Westminster Avenue in Westminster Park.

IMPROVE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM & BEAT THE WINTER BLUES by Catherine Gaskell Holistic Nutritional Therapist

T

HE warm rays of the summer months have disappeared, the days are shortening as winter approaches and our thoughts turn to keeping well. Our immune systems have been stimulated by the summer sun and naturally many people have a feeling of well-being, increased energy and vitality. The abundance of nutrient-rich fresh fruit, vegetables and salads has provided us with supernutrients afforded from a diet high in protective phytonutrients. These phytonutrients derived from plant-based foods contain powerful antioxidants, have anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. Flavonoids and Carotenoids are the buzz words in nutrition. They can be found in brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. Flavonoids in particular have infinitely greater antioxidant action, working with other vitamins and minerals to provide a Supernutrient effect. Vitamin C and the minerals selenium and zinc are our great protectors. The supermarkets and local farm shops are overwhelmed by the bounty and beauty of autumn produce .This is the season for squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, beetroot, broccoli, spinach, leeks, parsnips, turnips, apple, pears and cranberries. Remember the more colourful the produce, the better it is for you. Take caution in over buying and incorrect storage. Time damages both taste and nutrient content. Store root vegetables in a dry place away from sunlight and use within a week as they can become tough and loose valuable nutrients which are packed beneath their skins. Try to prepare fruits and vegetables close to the time they will be needed, if chopped and

left to sit their nutrient value will be decreased. Steam vegetable until just tender or stir-fry in a small amount of Olive Oil to preserve those precious vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. We all know the 5 a-day rule and if you are managing to get at least that amount of brightly coloured fresh fruit and dark green vegetables into your daily diet then you will most likely be protecting yourself from immune deficiency symptoms, such as the common cold. Many of us reduce the supplements we take during the summer months, but now is the time to consider supplementation to support your body through the impending months lowering your risk of health problems and boosting that all important immune system. Regular intake of essential fatty acids will benefit those with circulatory difficulties and arthritis as the weather gets colder; oily fish a couple of times a week and eating flax, pumpkin and sesame seeds in conjunction with a high quality recommended essential fatty acid supplement will comprehensively support and protect you through the winter months by having an antifreeze-like and anti-coagulant effect. AUTUMN DELIGHTS IN OCTOBER Gardening by Janet Heath AUTUMN is well underway and your garden will be gradually shutting down in preparation for winter. The exuberance of summer flowers and foliage gives way to the more subtle colours of gold, russet, barley yellow and orange from grasses and leaves. At this time of year there are still flowers - look out for Dahlias in white red or yellow, the pink flowers of the fleshy Sedum spectabile and some Japanese Anemones will still be flowering. However it is the foliage from grasses that will give you delight at this time of year. The grasses such as Stipa gigantea with its tall oat heads and Miscanthus sinensis Zebrinus has cream striped green leaves. Trees such as Acers have wonderful rich red foliage. There are also many varieties of Crab Apple (Malus) such as John Downie or Golden Hornet with red or yellow small apples that stay on the trees in autumn. Rowans or Sorbus trees also have ornamental berries that can last on the tree for weeks although the birds tend to eat the red berries first leaving yellow and cream berries on the tree. In the garden you can continue to dig up and split perennials at this time of year. The roots will continue to grow even in frosty conditions in soil that is still warm from summer below the surface. Conifers and other evergreens can be moved at this time of year, as there is less likelihood of the roots drying out. Lawns can be scarified and given an autumn feed in October. It is also a good time to lay new turf as it will be well watered in and be less likely to be walked on thus allowing it to grow on well. Complete digging up any potatoes making sure none are left behind to harbour diseases. Apples that are best for keeping tend to be ready for harvesting in October. An apple that is ripe is one that can be picked when you lift it gently and it comes away easily. Pulling an apple from the tree is an indication that it is not yet ripe. CRIMESTOPPERS is the only UK Independent charity working to help solve crimes. Cheshire Crimestoppers is one of 39 Regional Volunteer Boards operating under the Crimestoppers banner. Bonfire Night is traditionally a time when communities can come together and enjoy responsibly organised celebrations. There is, however, a darker side whereby individuals or groups hide under the cloak of ‘having a good time’ to start deliberate and dangerous fires and to create fire-related disturbances which place members of the public and their property at risk. Increasingly, such activity is not confined to November 5th, but begins around the middle of October.
