LIGHTS OUT?

It’s only April but already the organisers of the Hoole Christmas Lights are starting preparations for the big switch on later in the year. This year, with the economic downturn they are finding money harder to come by. They are hoping that they can raise enough money so that the showpiece event goes on. Elsewhere in the magazine there is a piece on Hoole Rangers and an inspiring tale of young Rose Marshall whose mum is taking part in a road race to raise funds for her condition. Hoole History Corner Len Morgan writes about hoole’s war memorials THERE are five war memorials in Hoole dedicated to the memory of the men of the area who lost their lives in the two world wars. Three of the memorials are rolls of honour, two are in All Saints Church, the third was in the Elms Town Hall. When the Elms was demolished, it was removed and re-hung in Hoole Community Centre above the fireplace in the main hall. The fourth memorial is heard but never seen. It is the tolling bell in the tower of All Saints Church. It was added to the existing five bells in 1925 and is inscribed with the names of the dead of the First World War so that the names ring out forever. The fifth memorial is probably the most widely known. It is the cross on Hoole Road opposite the Elms site. The cross, its matching base and memorial wall were built of red sandstone from St Bees, Cumberland. It was designed by Mr R Boot and was unveiled at a ceremony on 11th September 1949 by Maj Gen GM Elliot (right).

FINDING NEMO AND THE EASTER STORY with the Rev Andy Glover

A FEW weeks ago I was talking to my seven-year-old niece and she was telling me all about a film that she had just seen on DVD called “Finding Nemo.” She was really excited because Nemo was just like one of the fish that her dad had in his fish tank and she loved feeding the fish with dad! I was able to tell her I’d seen the film and that it was one of my favourite films!! In the film Nemo is a little clown fish. He lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his dad, Marlin. Nemo’s father loved him very much. He watched over Nemo and protected him from every evil. Nemo and his dad were best friends. But one day Nemo disobeyed his father and swam beyond the reef. He was suddenly scooped up by a diver and taken away on a boat. Nemo’s disobedience caused him to Andy Glover has lived in be separated from his father. Nemo was so sad because there Hoole with his wife Sue was nothing he could do to get back to his father. Nemo ended up for 20 years. Andy began in fish tank in a dentist’s office overlooking the Sydney Harbour. at Hoole Baptist Church, His situation seemed hopeless. The father loved little Nemo so on Westminster Road, much that it did not matter how big the ocean was, or how many fish there were. He was determined to save Nemo, and set out on as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and an incredible adventure to seek and save little Nemo. The good now Team Leader. news of this heroic father travelling the ocean in search of his son reached Nemo through a pelican named Nigel. Eventually father and son are reunited. There are many reasons why so many people enjoy the film Finding Nemo. It is a powerful story about determination of a caring father. Marlin refused to give up – he was determined to find with his son. It is the story of being lost, and then found. Last year on the BBC we were able to watch over four episodes “The Passion” This was a modern adaptation of the story of Jesus Christ’s arrest, trial and suffering. It ends with his execution by crucifixion and then his resurrection from the dead. Many scholars accept the crucifixion of Jesus as an actual historical event the date is understood to have been Friday 18th March in 29 AD! The most iconic image of the Passion is the crucifix - Christ in his last agony on the cross - found in statues and paintings, in glass, stone and wooden images in churches, and in jewellery. There are two main themes within the Passion; incarnation - the death of Jesus shows humanity that God had become truly human and that he was willing to undergo every human suffering, right up to the final agony of death; victory - the victory of Christ over death. The central belief of Christianity is that Jesus is alive; he rose from the dead and appeared to his disciples for 40 days before his ascension into Heaven, this claim makes Christianity different from all other Faiths – in that its founder – Jesus Christ – is still alive. At this time of Easter the story of Nemo can help you understand God and his love for you, when Jesus came to Judea to live, he came seeking and searching for people who are lost, those who God wants to know and to care for. Today God is still searching for you – through Jesus and His death and resurrection he has provided the means by which you can be found!

Work starts on big gas main upgrade WORK begins this month on a massive upgrade of the area’s gas supply network. Hoole and Vicars Cross are the first parts of the city to have old iron gas pipes replaced by polyethylene. The replacement of over 88 miles of pipes will affect the main routes into the city and inevitably cause some traffic disruption. Work on the first stage, costing £4.5m, will take a year to complete. The remainder of the work in other parts of the city will be done over the following four years. To speed up work and keep traffic moving, engineers would extend the working day and work during weekends on the main roads affected.

l COMMUNITY safety wardens and the dog warden have stepped up patrols to tackle dog fouling in Hoole. The district has among the highest number of dog fouling complaints in Chester. The new zero tolerance approach means that offenders will be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £50, if they do not clean up after their dog. Wardens will first offer offenders without a dog bag a free one to clean up the mess. If the person refuses to do so they will be fined. Councillor Jill Houlbrook said: “Irresponsible dog owners who let their pets foul public spaces cause unnecessary inconvenience, stress and health dangers to other residents, especially children. Their selfish behaviour is unacceptable. We now have the powers to get tough and the time has come to use them.”

The next Alpha Course starts on Thursday 30th April at All Saints Church Centre at 7.15pm. This evening is an introduction evening and includes a meal with a short talk afterwards called ‘Is There More to Life than This?’ The course lasts for 10 weeks and is run by Hoole Baptist Church and All Saints Church. HOOLE RANGERS FC SINCE our last report in the March magazine, Hoole Rangers FC have signed several new players, and had a couple of quality players return from injury. As a consequence, form and results have improved, with both teams winning two of the three games played in this period. The reserves are now sitting more comfortably in the middle of Division Two, and the first team are much closer to safety in the Premier league. The reserves only have three further league games, but the first team still have six games to play; all fixtures are scheduled to be finished by the end April. Three of the outstanding first team matches are against other teams in the relegation battle, so it promises to be a very interesting and exciting end to the season. There will be a full round-up of the season in the next magazine Looking forward, we have an end-of-season presentation evening booked for Friday 8th May at the Catholic Social Club in Brook Street Chester. At around 9pm, following the presentation of trophies we will be showcasing two excellent local bands, Hereby Sunday and The Suns. Tickets (£5) are open to the general public and will be on sale from the beginning of April from club secretary, see below. Hoole Rangers Reserves are also looking for a new team manager for 2009/10 season. Full support will be given to successful candidate, so previous experience is not essential. Last year’s lights switch on which attracted big crowds

Funds needed for lights switch on SOME bright ideas are needed to bring in some money to fund the Hoole Christmas Lights. Organisers fear that the economic downturn will hit donations from local businesses which could put the big switch on into doubt. Traders who normally give generously are feeling the pinch

Organiser Sharon Brenton, of Wash 2 Wear, in Charles Street, admitted that some of the lights need repairing, which will add to the cost. Last year they got local radio station Dee 106.3 to host the event, but that wasn’t cheap either. Sharon said they haven’t got enough money to pay for the 2008 lights and are

INVESTING FOR INCOME – THE CHOICES By Simon Dangar PEOPLE investing for income have a number of options when considering how best to make their money work harder for them. And with bank interest rates at historically low levels, those relying on interest from savings to supplement their income are increasingly recognising the need to seek out the alternatives to make up the shortfall. Despite current stock market volatility, equities (shares) still represent the pick of the bunch when looking for long-term income-generating potential. Investing in asset classes like property, bonds and cash all help in the drive to generate income, but history shows that equities outperform all comers over the longer term. This is due to a number of factors; the trend for dividends from company shares to increase over time, the potential for capital gains in the value of those shares and the significant boost to those gains that can be achieved by reinvesting dividends until the income tap needs to be turned on. This combination of rising income and capital growth over the medium to long-term is vital to help fight off the main threat to income – inflation. But while in the main share values have increased over time, nothing can ever be guaranteed. So it is always essential to invest carefully and the temptation to put all the eggs in one basket should be avoided by holding a spread of investments geared towards generating income. And with people living longer, creating sufficient income for retirement to ensure you don’t ‘outlive your money’ has become a greater requirement than ever before. So what are the options when investing for income, other than equities? One is commercial property, which offers a real opportunity to achieve capital growth and a rising income to combat the effects of inflation. Investment in a commercial property fund provides a spread across a portfolio of offices, Born on 24th April 1959: DJ Bruno Brookes

retail outlets, warehouses and industrial premises. Upward rent reviews are a common feature of commercial property leases, providing the potential for growing income levels above deposit returns. Although recent times have shown us that the value of commercial property can fall, overall, commercial property investment also has a track record for often providing returns when other investment types may not be doing so, which can make it an important part of a diversified income strategy. Another option is ‘fixed interest’ investments, also known as bonds or gilts, which are loans made by investors to companies or governments. The level of interest the investor receives depends on the creditworthiness of the borrowing company or government. The more risky the borrower is, the higher the interest paid out to investors, to reflect the amount of risk the investor is making with their capital. By carefully combining the options available, people can create investments that maximise income potential, while at the same time controlling risk to capital and providing the opportunity for inflation-beating returns. But choosing the right blend of incomegenerating investments is not easy, which is why many people leave this to professional wealth management specialists in order to find the right income solutions. This provides unrivalled access to investment know-how and the opportunity to invest across a range of different investment firms, with the peace of mind of knowing that money is being well looked after. The garden in April Gardening by Janet Heath AS plants are growing it is a good time to give them an annual feed. I usually apply a general balanced fertilizer such as Growmore or pelleted chicken manure, around all the plants in the borders. Also give the lawn a spring feed and weed application. Applying this as a solution that is watered onto the grass with a watering can is effective. Try not to miss out an area, as it can look odd to have most of the lawn weed free but with a patch of weeds in the middle! Potatoes that have been chitted (the shoots left to grow to about half an inch) can be planted out in a trench 9 ins (20 cms) deep at the end of March and in April. New potatoes freshly dug from the ground are hard to beat for flavour. Having a garden that has an active slug population often means that lettuces, radishes and beans planted into the soil are eaten as they pop up which is most frustrating. However if these vegetables are planted in pots during April and allowed to grow on before planting out, you can get a crop. Buddleja shrubs that have not been pruned can be cut back hard in April to flower later in the year. Forsythias that are too large should Died on 30th April 1945: Nazi leader Adolf Hitler

also be pruned immediately after flowering in April. There are also some tempting plants in nurseries and garden centres. Cheerful shrubs for spring could include Philadelphus coronarius Aureus with bright yellow foliage that contrasts well with purple leaved shrubs. For fragrance, planted alongside a path where you can smell the flowers, try Viburnum burkwoodii varieties. They have rounded heads of wonderfully scented white or pink flowers in April and May and the leaves turn reddish in autumn. Perennials in flower now and will reliably pop up each year include Bergenias (Elephants Ears) with their big rounded leaves and clusters of white or pink flowers and Pulmonarias (Lungwort) with pretty pink white or blue flowers in spring then large leaves to keep weeds at bay in summer and autumn. They are good for shady areas under shrubs provided the soil does not dry out. Janet Heath – The Garden Mentor Tel 01244 318258 [email protected]
