what’s so special about hoole?

What makes Hoole so different to the other suburbs in Chester? Certainly, Hoole has its own sense of community, more perhaps than other areas. But is this down to geography, the shopping centre or the people? This is the question posed by Andy Glover in this month’s edition. Also in the magazine we’ve got pictures from Hoole Rangers’ end of season presentation, a feature on the Millennium Greenway and Len Morgan’s regular history article. We hope you enjoy the magazine. Hoole History Corner Len Morgan looks at how hoole grew after the first world war Parish and field Hoole began life as part of two other parishes, Plemstall and St John’s and did not originally have a church of its own. The original area of Hoole was also different from today. Its truecentre originally lay in what is now Hoole Village, wehre all the big houses (Hoole Hall, Old Hall Farm and Hoole House) were centred. What we now think of as Hoole was then known as Bishopsfields, together with Moor Park (Kilmorey Park) and Hoole Park. Hoole was connected with Chester by a bridge over the brook at the top of Brook Street. The beginnings of Hoole Urban District Council In 1864 the Hoole Local Board of Health was formed. This was mainly concerned with building drains and paving streets. In 1867 Hoole got its own parish church, All Saints, and in 1894 was designated an Urban District Council with extra powers such as housing and planning. In 1895 the first council was elected and Mr E N Humphreys was the first councillor to take his seat. ‘Fit homes for heroes to live in’ In the late 1920s the first council homes were built in a row in Hoole Lane. They were followed by new streets named after trees such as Pine Grove and Maple Grove. In 1936 the area of the council was considerably enlarged by the addition of most of Newton and Plas Newton. This was the main area set aside for new council housing, although the council still had land available near the ring road. The Second World War put a stop on the programme but after the war the development continued with Willow Grove and Kingsway. One of the last acts of the council in 1954 was the placing of a contract to Warrington’s for 38 council houses on the Hoole House site at £1,451.7s.10d per house. The tenants were allocated at the last meeting of the council on 8th March 1954.

WHAT MAKES HOOLE SO DIFFERENT? with the Rev Andy Glover

OVER the years I’ve heard people say many times that Hoole is a lovely place to live and that it has a different feel from the other suburbs around Chester, the comments usually reflect that there is something different about Hoole. I’ve often wondered what is it that makes the difference; is it the shops on Faulker and Charles Street? Certainly Hoole is very well served by all the different shops, do they add a sense of community? Is it the local school: Hoole Primary? The school is a lovely building and is well used by the community, I’m sure the governors, teachers and other staff are all working hard to provide a great educational experience for the children of Hoole. Is it the local churches, Hoole is served by 4 churches who work together not just providing Sunday services but many activities and community projects that offer all ages from the youngest to oldest, an opportunity to come together and experience community and friendship. There are other organisations and facilities all within Hoole that I could also list, youth clubs, pubs, bowling, etc, etc each bring something unique and all add to what makes Hoole different?

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 20 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

For me, the answer to the question, “what makes the difference in Hoole?” comes down to the people. Over 20 years I have met some incredible and wonderful people who live and work in Hoole, many have something in common, a willingness to get involved and be the difference. I love the following story because it reminds me that I/we can make a difference. In my work as a Church leader I often wonder if what I am involved in actually does make any difference, sometime the problems and issues of a person or in a community can seem insurmountable. If we focus on the enormity of some of these issues it can seem that any one individual can’t possible change anything – but if we recognised that actually each of us can make a difference, if we decide to do something instead of doing nothing, we would see that change is possible. Christianity teaches that things can change; it can be different because God gives us the power to bring about change One morning an old man was walking along the beach and noticed the tide had washed thousands of starfish up on the shore. In the distance he spotted a boy who was gathering up the starfish and one by one was throwing them back into the ocean. He approached the boy and asked him why he spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time. The boy replied, “If these starfish are left out here like this they will bake in the sun, and by this afternoon they will all be dead.” The old man gazed out as far as he could see and responded, “But, there must be hundreds of miles of beach and thousands of starfish. You can’t possibly rescue all of them. What difference is throwing a few back going to make anyway?” The boy then held up the starfish he had in his hand and replied, “It’s sure going to make a lot of difference to this one!” Maybe today you too can make a difference!

HOOLE’S GREEN JEWEL A PEACEFUL green corridor pathway runs through Hoole - the Chester Millennium Greenway - it gives us a chance to see much wildlife. There are many more pedestrians enjoying the route than cyclists which does tend to make us forget it is a shared path. Most cyclists warn of their approach by using a bell or shouting ‘coming through’ which is great. This is especially useful for the blind, or deaf, those with young children, dogs or Friends of the Millennium Greenway volunteers intent of clearing litter! Of course, dogs must be under control and owners have to clear up after their dog and take the bag to the bin provided or face a hefty fine! Our volunteer group have cleared litter and enhanced this linear park, a valuable open space pathway, since it opened in 2000. You are sure of a welcome either clearing litter in spare time or lending a hand, on specific Volunteer Days, usually held in the middle of the month. Genial company and much bird song whilst working in a tranquil country setting. Who could ask for better? Tools and gloves are provided. Join us, stay as long as you wish. At the moment our projects are, mainly clearing litter along the intended extension route, or tree planting etc. After the pathway has been surfaced seats, bird boxes etc have also been our suggested projects. The Council and the PCT have organised walking groups. People using mobility scooters could be welcome too. Generally, they are around a couple of miles in length, at various locations across Chester. Do contact, Council Officer James Duckers, James.Duckers@ cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk Remember that - In the effort to reach for the moon some fail to notice the flowers at their feet. HOOLE RANGERS FC Hoole Rangers first team had an excellent end to their Premier league season, winning six of the nine games played in March and April. This has lifted them from bottom place in February, to a respectable mid table position. The reserves won three out of six games played in the same period to secure their position in Division Two next year. The successful end to the season gives us confidence that we can progress and have both teams challenging for honours next year. Pre-season training starts end of July, and new players are welcome to come down and join us, either to try out for the teams, or just to enjoy some exercise. Jazzman hangs up his trumpet TOM Jones well known local trumpeter and founder of The Wall City Jazzmen is retiring after a career of over 60 years. Tom played with many local dance bands and served with the RAF returning to Chester in the early 50s and founding the Jazzmen who first played at the old Clemences Restaurant in Northgate Street. In 1956 the band moved to Quaintways Restaurant. The start was slow until someone wrote a letter to the local newspaper basically saying jazz was a jungle type of music only played in smoky cellars where hard drinks, etc were readily available. Curiosity was aroused and the crowds flocked in only to find that the atmosphere was airy and the only drinks available were tea and mineral waters, however the crowds liked the jazz and the Monday nights at the Wall City Jazz Club was the place to be. And since the band has been playing at the Mill Hotel on Mondays many people have said they still have their membership cards, some even saying they met their wives and husbands at the old Jazz Club at Quaintways. The band had great success appearing on TV playing in the well known jazz clubs in London and Manchester as well as Liverpool where they played on the opening night of the world famous Cavern Club. Their name is on the Cavern Club’s Wall of Fame as also is Pat Fields who joined the Wall City at 15 years of age in 1958 and turned professional. A few years later she returned to the band when the Monday night sessions were started at the Mill Hotel. The Wall City Jazzmen with Pat (or Trish as she prefers to be called) appeared in many concerts with the top stars of the time and played with many well known jazzmen from the UK and America During this time Gordon Vickers was the manager and credit must be given for the way he promoted the band and his continued association and he always does a spot with the band if he can arrange his business commitments to include Monday evenings. Tom’s well attended retirement party took place last month at the Mill Hotel and many of the musicians who have played with the band congratulated Tom on over 60 years of jazz and the legacy of the Wall City Jazzmen.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett Q. How do self-tanning preparations work and are they safe? A. Nearly all self-tanning products contain a chemical called ‘Dihydroxyacetone’, commonly called DHA . This chemical was first recognised as a skin colouring agent by German scientists in the 1920’s and later permanently added to the list of approved cosmetic ingredients in the 1970’s by the FDA (the Food and Drug Administration) and there is no evidence to suggest that fake tanning products are unsafe. DHA is a simple carbohydrate, often derived from plant sources such as sugar beet or sugar cane, however, there is a slight risk of contact dermatitis with self-tanning products but this is often due to other chemicals such as preservatives and fragrances in the products more than the DHA itself. If you have a history of allergies or have never used a self-tan product before it is advisable to carry out a small patch test at least 24 hours prior to slathering your entire body in it! It is well to know that for first 24 hours following application of selftanning products the skin is especially susceptible to free-radical damage from sunlight so protect your skin from UV exposure during this time and remember that a ‘tan’ acquired from a self-tanning product will not protect your skin from the suns damaging rays so always wear a sun protection product at all times. The application of an anti-oxidant rich cream is also advisable if you are at all concerned about free-radical damage and premature skin ageing. Your local beauty salon will be able to either carry out a professional, natural looking self-tan for you or advise you on the best products to use at home. Q. I like to buy cosmetics on-line. Are there any precautions I should take? A. On-line shopping is a very convenient way to acquire goods, including skin care products. However, there are some precautions that need to be mentioned here. Most reputable skin care companies will only supply qualified professionals in recognised beauty salons. The grey market is not only supplying fake designer handbags! There has been concern in recent months about the ever-increasing number of ‘fake’ skin care and cosmetic products coming onto the internet market. Last December the journal Professional Beauty reported that there are many counterfeit products which look identical to the real thing being sold on internet sites and can reveal “a terrifying concoction of chemicals, sawdust and even urine”. Many products sold on the internet have been found to be out of date and so will be ineffective. Also remember that many internet sites will not offer you the advice that you need in order to select the correct skin care product to suit your skin condition. Always consult a professional skin care therapist who will carry out a proper skin analysis under a magnified lamp to advise you on the best product for your skin care needs.

Angela Bartlett is a beauty and holistic expert with 25 years of experience in her field. She is the Chair for the British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology, a professional association established over 30 years ago and representing thousands of therapists throughout the UK. Her expertise is called on to examine students for an international examination board in many areas of the world.
