A SWAN has been keeping strangers away from his pregnant partner on the canal in Hoole. WHO LET THE DADS OUT? SIX-year-old Jacob decided one Saturday morning to fix his parents pancakes He found a big bowl and spoon, pulled a chair to the counter, opened the cupboard and pulled out the heavy flour canister, spilling it on the floor.

He scooped some of the flour into the bowl with his hands, mixed in most of a cup of milk and added some sugar, leaving a floury trail on the floor, which by now had a few tracks left by his kitten. Jacob was covered with flour and getting frustrated. He wanted this to be something very good for Mum and Dad, but it was getting very bad. He didn’t know what to do next, whether to put it all into the oven or on the stove and he didn’t know how the stove worked! Suddenly he saw his kitten licking from the bowl of mix and reached to push her away, knocking the egg carton to the floor. Frantically he tried to clean up this monumental mess but slipped on the eggs, getting his pyjamas dirty and sticky. And just then, he saw hid dad standing at the door. Big crocodile tears welled up in Jacob’s eyes. All he’d wanted to do was something good, but he’d made a terrible mess. He was sure a scolding was coming, maybe even a spanking. But, his father just watched him. Then, walking through the mess, he picked up his crying son, hugged him and loved him, getting his own pyjamas dirty and sticky in the process! This month we shall celebrate Father’s Day – I must admit I sometimes think the role model of a good Father in society is becoming an

endangered species! All too often we hear stories of Fathers deserting their families, children growing up with no experience of Fatherhood or families where the Father is emotional disengaged from his children or too busy with work to spend time with them. Over the past few years, the church I lead has been trying to address some of these issues. Let me ask you dads of young families out there, how would you prefer to spend a Saturday morning? 1. creating another DIY disaster; 2. trudging around the shops; or 3. having fun with your toddler while eating bacon butties and chatting with other dads? If your choice would be option 3, then Who Let The Dads Out? is for you! Who Let the Dads Out? is a toddler group for fathers (and other male carers) and their pre-school children. It aims to: - be a fun way for dads and children to spend time together, and - be a place where fathers can meet other men in the same position. The group meets on the first Saturday of each month in Hoole Lighthouse Centre, from 10am to midday). In addition to a wide range of toddlers’ toys and a craft table, there are the famous bacon sandwiches, good coffee and good company. It is regularly attended by 3045 dads and up to 60 kids. We also have SODA (School’s Out, Dad’s About) Club - a special club for dads, male

With Father’s Day approaching, the Rev Andy glover explains what’s on in the community for dads in Hoole

carers and their infant school aged children. The SODA Club takes place on the first Monday each month (from 5.30pm to 7pm) and is a fantastic opportunity for you to play with your children, chat to other dads, scan the newspaper reports on the weekend’s sport and enjoy a cuppa with a slice or two of buttered toast. There are a wide selection of toys and games and there is a craft activity to do at each session. All are designed for dads and children to take part in together. It’s a perfect way to start the week and a great opportunity to make memories with your kids! Some Other groups for dads in Hoole include: Daddy Cool – a 5 week parenting programme specifically for dads, Soul Man – an opportunity for dads to discuss their values and beliefs and what they pass onto their children, Hoole Dads football team – a kick-about for men on Wednesdays at 8.45pm, Its no good on just one day of the year to think about Fathers, being a good Father is a journey that lasts a lifetime and if we’re honest requires help and advice from others!

Hoole a ‘no-go zone’ for shoplifters SHOPLIFTERS face a crackdown in Hoole thanks to a new Shopwatch scheme. During the last month a total of 13 people have been dealt with after traders began using radios to warn each other about potential thieves in the area. A simllar scheme operates in Chester city centre and has proved to be effective in tackling well known shoplifters. Police community support officer Keith Bartlett said: “Shopwatch is not designed to replace a call to the police if staff see someone actually committing a crime, but it gives shopkeepers a warning that trouble could be on the way. “Hoole is becoming a no-go area for thieves thanks to the work business owners and the local police are doing as part of this scheme. “We want shoplifters and thieves to know we won’t tolerate this behaviour in the area. In the past, some community leaders have raised concerns that areas like Hoole and Garden Lane, have suffered from the displacement of city centre crime. That’s because some crooks now avoid the city centre due to its extensive CCTV network and seek softer targets in the suburbs. A LARGE ‘Walking Bus’ of parents and children from Newton Primary School launched Walk to School Week. Across Cheshire West and Chester more than 20,000 children from 91 primary schools took part in the initiative. THE former Hoole Hall Hotel is expected to create 35 jobs with the launch of a new spa later this year. Now rebranded as Doubletree by Hilton Chester, the hotel on Hoole Roundabout, has invested over £27million in the new development which is expected to open in November. The venue is also expanding its events department to meet extra growth in wedding inquiries. General manager Tony Wright said the hotel has seen advance bookings rise by over 20 per cent. He added: “We’re certainly not feeling the effects of the crunch and are delighted to have created so many jobs for the area.

Dog died in pub blaze A FAMILY had a lucky escape after a fire broke out at the Railway Inn pub in Brook Street. Firefighters believe that the blaze started after the family dog knocked over a halogen heater on the landing. summer arrives in the garden Gardening by Janet Heath MAY and June are months when flowering shrubs come into their own. Shrubs such as Deutzia Rosealind or Mont Rose have lovely starry pink flowers and are not too fussy growing in sun or light shade. Pruning is similar to forsythia, just after flowering as it produces flowers on the previous years growth. Philadelphus Beauclerk or Belle Etoile has white, highly scented flowers so site it near a sitting area and enjoy the fragrance. It likes a sunny position and can be pruned back to size just after flowering. Some sun loving perennials will flower for weeks from June onwards. Try pale blue flowered Nepeta (Catmint) and lemon yellow Anthemis tinctoria E C Buxton as both will flower for up to three months in summer especially if you cut off the dead flowers. Another long flowering perennial is Achillea Schwellenberg with lovely silvery grey leaves with flat heads of yellow flowers. If you have apple trees in the garden you will find that they naturally drop some of the small apples just as they start to grow. In June thin the fruit on each cluster to one or two so you have larger apples in autumn. Some apple trees fruit every other year so don’t be disappointed if you find your tree has a year off. Consider buying single stem cordon apples that can be grown in a small space to give you more fruit. Remember to put straw around strawberries as they mature. If it is wet it will keep the fruit off the ground and help to avoid pests and rotting fruit. More tender vegetables such as peppers, courgettes can be planted out provided they are well grown. Look out for slugs, as they will treat small seedlings as an overnight snack! Many garden centres now have seedling vegetable plants for sale so try some in pots. If slugs eat your lettuces, grow the loose leaf varieties in pots raised off the ground. This year, in an effort to thwart the slugs I am trying to grow salads in old wooden wine boxes raised off the ground as I have heard that slugs and snails don’t like slithering over rough wood!
