SEARCH FOR A HERO 12 8 To To Toadvertise advertise advertisecall call call350398 350398 350398 6
WHAT is a hero or a heroine? My dictionary defines a hero as “a man or boy admired for his bravery, great deeds, or noble qualities” but I think it’s not quite as simple as that. If we were in search of a summer sporting hero then I suppose that a certain British tennis player who so nearly reached the final of Wimbledon would be near the top of many lists. If we are looking for someone with “noble qualities and bravery” then Nelson Mandela must be in any top five list. You could even argue that the hundreds of thousands of protesters dressed in black and green who flooded the streets of Tehran Iran recently in a sombre, candlelit show of defiance and mourning for those killed in clashes after Iran’s disputed presidential election are all heroes and heroines! What does it take in 2009 to achieve heroic and legendary status? The recent sudden death of Michael Jackson will no doubt increase his status as a legend! Long gone are the days when our heroes were explorers or military leaders, or even suave members of the royal family. Instead it is the faces from reality TV shows or from wannabe pop bands.
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 20 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
Even some of today’s sporting heroes are far from what we would want as role models. Which leads me to ask the question: “Where have all our heroes and heroines gone? The people of the UK and especially the young people are in desperate need of good oldfashion heroes. Where are the people we can look up to, of whom we can say, “ I want to be like her” or “I’m going to be like him when I grow up?”
In the midst of the story of our lives I believe we are looking for a hero, is it your dad, your best friend or your school teacher, maybe it’s a popstar or football player whoever it may be, having heroes is a natural part of life, we all need someone to look up to, someone we aspire to be like, some one who can give us hope that life can be diffrernt. Of course there are many unsung heroes in our communities, people who volunteer time to work with the young and old and the vulnerable and poor within society, those who deal with tragic circumstances of life with dignity and respect and those who are living lives of genuinely heroic quality like the single mum raising her children. It is really easy to miss these heroes and heroines because we have been sucked in by the myth-building techniques of television and the media where heroes are only portrayed as superheroes. Using their super powers, they fight imaginary and real life problems like crime, greed, drugs and villains. Super heroes and heroines entertain us with excitement and adventure. So we don’t see the heroes and heroines living in the real world. I’m not sure the church is place where many would look to find their heroes or heroines but if we were to look at the person and life of Jesus Christ then I believe we will find a hero, someone to follow, and if Christians really are followers of this Jesus then we should be able to find in these people qualities and character that will prompt the question “I want to be like him/her!

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett Q. I am very fair skinned and I am going on holiday to a hot country. I always burn, so should I have some sunbed sessions before I go to protect my skin? A. I would never advocate the use of sunbeds. A suntan is the skins response to exposure to harmful radiation in order to protect itself. In short, a tanned skin is a damaged skin. If you are very fair skinned take sensible precautions – apply a very high factor sunblock at regular intervals, stay out of the sun during the hottest hours and wear a hat. If you want to go brown – fake it with a self-tan product. Either build up the fake tan gradually with a product applied daily or visit a professional therapist for fake tan treatment. Don’t forget that fake tan is purely cosmetic and will not protect your skin from the sun. Q. I have small unsightly red veins on my cheeks, how can I remove them? A. These small red veins are often called ‘thread veins’ or ‘dilated capillaries’ and the ones that have a centre with ‘legs’ radiating out from the centre are called ‘spider naevi’ due to the fact they look like little red spiders! There are a variety of solutions to your problem. Masking them with a remedial camouflage cream or green tinted concealer may be suitable. If this is not acceptable they can be successfully removed with either laser or short wave diathermy, which is also often called advanced electrolysis. Not everyone is suitable for these treatments so ensure that your qualified therapist gives you a consultation prior to treatment. Prevention is always better than cure with most skin problems so ask your therapist about measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of the formation of further red veins.

AUGUST IN YOUR GARDEN Gardening by Janet Heath AUGUST can be a dull month in the garden as the spring and early summer flowering shrubs and perennials are over and tree foliage can look a bit tired. With a bit of planning, you can have colour in the garden if you concentrate on flowering perennials and some shrubs. Flowering shrubs include such favourites as hydrangeas, Hypericum Hidcote with its shiny buttercup yellow flowers, Lavatera, which flowers for weeks in shades of white and pink and Buddleia, try the variety Black Knight with its deep purple flowers. If you go for flowers, there are many perennials that will reliably flower every year especially if you have a sunny border. Campanula lactiflora is tall with clusters of bell flowers in white or pink. For something different and if you have slightly damp soil, consider Inula hookeri which will give you large, yellow delicately fringed daisy flowers about 75cm (30ins) tall in July and August. Pair it with scarlet or deep pink Dahlias for a bright show of summer colour. Gypsophila or Baby’s Breath is an old cottage garden favourite with tiny button white flowers on tall stems (75cm (30ins) which will give you an airy cloud of white. In the vegetable garden you should keep your, salads, tomatoes, beans and courgettes watered. If you pick them regularly, they will continue to produce. Beans and peas will tend to stop producing if pods are allowed to mature. Late salads and radishes can be sown for cropping in autumn. Try some of the salad leaves for winter such as Land Cress which is similar in flavour to watercress but easier to grow in fertile soil that does not dry out. Spinach can also be sown for winter and spring cropping again in rich fertile soil. August is a good time to clip hedges for the last time in the year. Lavender can also be clipped back after flowering for bushy growth next year. Remember not to cut back into wood where there is no green growth, as this will kill the plant. Lawns may well be looking tired after long dry spells but they will come back again after early autumn rains. Rather than waste water on the lawn, just accept the situation! ROCK GODS BECOME PENSIONERS

T
HE music festival season is upon us, and it is always at this time of year that realisation dawns that more and more of those rock gods from yesteryear have suddenly become of pensionable age. Among those on stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival were a wealth of veterans including Tom Jones, Status Quo, Neil Young, Crosby Stills and Nash and the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. Elsewhere at British festivals this summer you could find others who have long left the first flush of youth behind; bands like the Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, The Specials, Human League, Ultravox and Squeeze.
Saving for your retirement is so important
They all still rock but the years roll inexorably by. The rock generation of the 1950’s and 60’s are today’s pensioners. And before they know it, the present crop of rising rock stars will be heading towards pensionable age. This exemplifies why the importance of retirement planning should never be underestimated. And yet, sadly, it is. According to a recent survey commissioned by the BBC, half of UK adults aged between 20 and 60 are not putting aside any funds into a pension. The survey indicated the situation was worst among under-30’s, with only about one in three putting anything into a scheme at all. Among 41 to 60-year-olds, 45% are not currently paying into a pension fund.
(Source: BBC 26/5/09 – Survey by Gfk NOP commissioned by BBC:http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/em/fr/-/1/hi/business/8068728.stm)
For workers in their 20’s and 30’s, retirement can seem a long way off, but with people living longer, the reality is that they need to start funding their retirement as early as possible to avoid a late pension panic. Retirement planning involves saving over the long term, and it is therefore very important that a savings culture is instilled in people from a young age.
A savings culture can be nurtured among young people at an early age by parents and grandparents, providing valuable nest eggs for the future. By doing so, young people will see the benefit of regular saving. The key to effective retirement planning is to start investing as much as you can afford as soon as possible, either on a regular basis or as a lump sum, so that money has plenty of time to grow. The longer you save for retirement, the more compound interest increases the size of your fund. The golden rule is to find out exactly how much is needed in retirement, and start planning for it now. With increased longevity, retirement can now last longer than the time we spent working. It is therefore essential to accumulate more while we are working in order to meet the extra costs of living longer. The recent changes to legislation have made the pension system much simpler and more flexible for everyone. People can now invest as much as they earn into a pension plan provided this does not exceed £245,000. A lifetime allowance of £1.75m caps the size of a fund on

Overleigh Roundabout August 2009 Financial advice with Simon Dangar which individuals can claim tax benefits. What makes pension contributions special is that tax relief is available. Personal contributions are payable net of basic rate tax of 20% and relievable against the higher rate of 40%. However, individuals with an income above £150,000 in this or either of the previous two tax years may only receive higher rate tax relief on contributions of up to £20,000pa. Furthermore, 25% of the fund can be taken as a tax free lump sum at any time after the age of 50 (or 55 when this becomes the minimum retirement age in 2010/11). Another change is that people can take benefits from the age of 55 without ceasing employment, which increases the number of options available to people. You no longer have to purchase an annuity, you can take the tax-free cash and decide not to take an income from your pension, and you do not even need to purchase an annuity when you reach the age of 75.
This increased all-round flexibility in the system gives people a real chance to start funding a good pension. But as we have seen, the years rapidly roll by. The first rock generation’s anthem “hope I die before I get old” may have happened for a handful of stars, but the vast majority of that generation are finding out that the prospects of living longer could mean a greater risk of outliving savings. Most people do not have the time or knowledge to understand the many taxefficient ways to fund this most important stage in our lives, which is why it is vital to seek the best professional advice from a wealth manager. Then you can sit back, rock in your chair and watch the years roll by.
