There’s more from Tarporley high school on page 34 and there’s also a school connection with liz haslam’s sensabout project which is featured on page 38. One issue which promises to divide opinion is the funding of a police community support officer in Tarporley, The parish council is facing the dilemma of whether to pay Cheshire Police to continue deploying the PCsO in the town. There’s more on that issue on page 10. This month’s edition also has pictures from the Tattenhall beer festival and Tarporley Vic’s and Kelsall football clubs. We’ve got the normal popular features including parish council news, gardening, a recipe, what’s on guide and village index. As usual, please support your local businesses and don’t forget to tell them that you saw their ad in The Talk We hope you enjoy the magazine Kind regards The Talkabout Team

A sense of excitement as Liz enriches young lives TARPORLEY’S Liz Haslam is making a big difference to children’s lives up and down the country. Liz is the brains behind Sensabout, a series of books and DVDs to help children with learning difficulties, autism, and memory loss. Originally sold to special schools, Sensabout is now used in more than 140 schools, from the Shetland Islands to Cornwall. Liz also believes that the multi-sensory approach would also be beneficial for adults with memory loss. With her sixth book will be out this half term, it is an exciting time for Liz and her partners. Each Sensabout book and DVD pack contains up to eight original songs and 80 photographs. They are used alongside the

books to build a multisensory experience which is suitable for any age. Songs, rhythms, actions and props all come together to engage the seven senses in an accessible and fun way. Says Liz: “Our approach is deliberately low tech to enable anyone to put together an enriching experience without a lot of expensive high-tech equipment. We have sold over 450 copies and there are even copies in Los Angeles and Toronto and we are exploring ways of working in the EU. We feel we could provide a useful tool for care homes and hope to expand further into this area this coming year.” Liz has lived in Tarporley for over 20 years and taught special needs pupils until ill health intervened. She works with Sally Slater, from Chester, who is a well

respected education trainer and consultant. “It was over lunch in The Swan about five years ago, the idea was floated of creating a learning approach based on our experience Sensabout was born,” says Liz Tarporley High School has indirectly played a significant part in the development of Sensabout through its former pupils: George Eaton publishes the packs; Anthony Hunter records the music and creates the music CD; Jonny Haslam helps him put it together; Vicky Jackson designed (and manages) our website. The Karting Club even made it onto ‘Squares at the Weekend’! For more information visit www.sensabout.com . Pictured: Putting the music together for the latest DVD
