CARNIVAL ATMOSPhERE ORGANISERS are putting the finishing touches to the Tarporley Carnival which takes place on Saturday 11th July, with a parade, silver band and cheerleaders among the attractions. Let’s hope that the weather stays fine, which certainly wasn’t the case for the kelsall School fair last month. The rain also forced the postponement of the St Alban’s Fair, in Tattenhall, but it was staged the following week in glorious sunshine! In this month’s edition there is news from across the area including an articles on the high school prom, pictures from the kelsall School and Tattenhall fetes. There’s also the usual features, including the Tarporley Parish Council page, garden advice, health and beauty and a big what’s on guide for the entire month. We hope you enjoy the magazine kind regards The Talkabout Team

IN ThE NEWS TArporley parish Council has voted ‘no’ to plans for wind turbines at rushton. parish councillors were united in their opposition to Cornwall light and power’s scheme for five giant turbines, which stretch up to a height of 400ft. The plans will now go before Cheshire West and Chester Council but local opposition is strong with people in rushton setting
up their own protest group called Cheshire Against rural Turbines. KelSAll parish Council is warning dog owners that they are risking their lives by clambering over safety barriers on the busy A54 bypass. The parish council is asking for a new crossing in line with the existing footpath.

TARPORLEy PARISh COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Tel. 01829 733496
Busy year for the parish council IT has been a busy year for Tarporley Parish Council, and in the main, councillors have worked well together with some worthwhile tangible results. The working groups were re-organised into two distinct groups, with six councillors sitting on each group, Infrastructure and Street Scene, this has helped to revitalise the Council and has led to the successful introduction of some very good village initiatives. The main goal of the groups was to help to move forward the objectives set down in the parish plan that was published in 2008. The Business Alliance is now well established, with an informative website: www.tarporleyba.co.uk, and a growing membership. The Country Market was actively supported with the formation of a Country Market Committee and the first market was held in December 2008. The Christmas lights Celebration was well received with local charities as well as Tarporley Silver Band and two local choirs to provide a very well attended Christmas lights Switch on. The Council has also been active in looking at ways to promote activities for the Tarporley village youth and is working towards a regular youth night held in a central location. for the Best Kept Village Award we were thrilled that our efforts were rewarded by the village gaining a fantastic first prize in 2008. on more routine activities we continue to monitor the state of our roads and pathways, and an annual “walkabout” now takes place in the spring to monitor trouble spots. We

continue to work with the police and we contracted with the police to obtain the services of pCSo emily Benson for three years; the council is actively monitoring this service to ensure best value for the community. The new cemetery has been brought in to use and has proven a necessary resource following the closure to new burials in St Helen’s churchyard. The council finances are in good order, the year opened with a bank balance of £20,700, an anticipated income of £54,000 from the precept and modest other income expected from grants and bank interest to fund a budget of £56,500. In practice additional income was accrued due to a refund on Christmas lights electricity from Scottishpower and the growing income stream from the new cemetery raising other income sources to £11,700. The increased income plus a reduction in expenditure against budget to £49,800 due largely to a reduction in Christmas lights costs resulted in a year-end bank balance of £36,600. of the £36,600 bank balance £20,500 is allocated as reserves against specific accounts including replacement of the council’s £86,100 assets and £16,100 is available for allocation as expenditure plans in 2009-10 unfold. The parish Council accounts are subject to internal and external audit and passed audit without qualification.

Local fashion label looking to expand! IN August 2007, local girl Tracy Farrow launched “cashmere&cotton”, an exciting new fashion label. Now in its fourth season, the range is aimed at the discerning woman and offers classic garments made up in two specific fibres to incorporate comfort, functionality, style and with the feel of real luxury. She believes that women of a certain age want to find a look and style that is right for them and build on it, not finding the need to change their wardrobe every season. With this in mind the range was conceived. A range of 100% cashmere knitwear is imported directly from the Far East, fine gauge cotton jerseywear is made in the UK and a classic cotton shirt range is sourced from the finest makers in Italy. Tracy has developed an easy to wear collection where the quality of fabric and make-up is paramount. Accessories such as beautiful Italian belts and
jewellery compliment the garments. Tracy began her career in clothing design after graduating with fashion business degree from Manchester. Throughout her career, Tracy has worked in various sectors of the fashion and clothing industry from design and technical services through to fashion buying for some of the largest retailers in the UK. Cashmere&cotton Ltd sell via agents at private house parties, ladies charity and business events and sale events throughout the UK. The range is also available by mail order and on-line. You can view the range via their website at: http://www.cashmereandcotton.co.uk
For women who like the idea of inviting a few friends for an evening of fashion or for ladies groups who enjoy the opportunity to try before they buy away from the hustle and bustle of the high street, a cashmere&cotton party is the ideal event. Tracy is now looking to develop the brand nationally via the website and the recruitment of additional agents across the UK who will sell through the party plan route on a commission basis. Tracy says “I am always pleased to speak to ladies with a flair for fashion who feel that this might be the fun, flexible earning opportunity they have been looking for. Times are tough right now within clothing retail, however I do believe that our brand offers simple, classic and timeless solutions to any wardrobe dilemma!”
HUGE SUMMER CLEARANCE Friday 3 July Due to popular demand we are delighted to return to Tarporley to offer you some amazing prices on our current range and up to 40% discount on the Summer stock. Food, glorious food !
T
he Gunnery is quickly establishing itself as a food lover’s destination with a fabulous restaurant, winebar and deli, all under one roof. Its location is enviable, halfway between Tarporley and Chester, it is carving a fantastic reputation for original food, recently scooping a prestigious award for its freshly prepared deli meals in the 2009 North West Fine Food Awards.
In today’s marketplace of faceless shops, the Gunnery, an old bakery, is a veritable treasure trove crammed with goodies. If you close your eyes it could be 1890, with the smell of bread still filling the air. It is unique to find a shop which retains its original Victorian interior and provides a wonderful backdrop for customers to shop or share a coffee with friends. Local artisan producers are represented whilst
…..
the in-house chefs create their own signature dishes. For those looking for great BBQ food then you’ll be spoilt for choice with the Gunnery’s summer menu. Choose between tasty dishes such as Memphis style sticky pork ribs or the classic Gunnery homemade steak burger. In the bar area, with its custom made carerra marble bar and roaring fire, customers enjoy a lively atmosphere. Its reputation as a wine bar is undisputed with a growing wine list of over 40 wines, International beers and bottled real ales. Day and night this is bustling with people who sit around the bar or wander into the Belle Époque Library, a first for the UK with Perrier Jouier sponsoring The Gunnery and providing the house Champagne. Now you can read all about the Champagne house and learn about the chateaux, whilst browsing through the wines for sale in the Gunnery off-licence. And if all this gets too much you can kick your shoes off and enjoy a glass of Champagne!

Finally upstairs there is a high quality restaurant with an emphasis on serving fresh, seasonal food in a relaxed atmosphere. Children are well catered for and there isn’t a microwave in sight. For starters try the ham hock terrine with homemade piccalilli and for mains the marinated chicken breast, sage polenta and caramalised shallots. each room has its own signature colour, made intimate with fires and provides a warm welcome. Any room can be hired free of charge whilst the year ahead is looking good with plenty of gourmet and wine tasting events planned. And if you’ve enjoyed the Gunnery so much that you want to take it home then the chefs offer a catering menu bespoke to each event.

Country house sale won’t make Hugo richer! THE man whose name is synonymous with Hockenhull Hall says he won’t make a penny from its sale. Last month the Tarporley Talk reported that grade two listed building was on the market for £4million. But Hugo Arnold has written in to say that sadly for him, he won’t become a multi-millionaire from the sale. Mr Arnold said: “The hall and the farm are, in fact, owned by Hockenhull Hall Estates Ltd which is owned by a family trust. “I have never owned an acre but have managed the farm since 1949 and have lived in the house which was derelict since we were married in 1955. “I have no financial interest in the property but the company has purchased a cottage which we shall rent for our retirement. “Last month’s article suggested that I shall become a multimillionaire - a situation which couldn’t be further from the truth!” the Georgian building is set in 206 acres and enjoys fabulous views across the Cheshire countryside.

JULY IN YOUR GARDEN Gardening by Janet Heath Hopefully this summer will be sunny so we can enjoy our gardens whether it is dining outside or just lounging about in the sun. Some herbs are great for adding to summer cooking. Mint is wonderful when added to Pimms and lemonade or pop a sprig in the pan when cooking new potatoes or peas. There are many different varieties of mint but grow in a pot or confined to an area where it can be contained, as many of them will invade your garden. In the vegetable garden, plant out winter leeks and brassicas such as broccoli and sprouts. Sow salads and French beans for a late crop. Do net fruit such as strawberries and blueberries. I tried to grow blueberries last year and had a crop developing nicely until the birds ate every one just before they ripened! Raspberries seem to be largely immune probably as the fruit is not so easy for birds to eat. July is a great month for perennials and many come in bright colours so take a trip to your local garden centre or visit some of our wonderful gardens to see what is doing well in July. Achilleas are sun-loving flowering plants that come in a range of colours from yellow, orange and red. Anthemis with yellow or white daisy flowers will continue into August or even September if you cut off the dead flowers. Crocosmia are also at their best in July with their sword shaped leaves and spikes of red, yellow or orange flowers. They may well need some support. Cooler colours of white and blue often come to life in the evening and seem to have an inner glow in fading light. Try white dahlias with their varied flower shapes. Many hardy geraniums have white or blue flowers and some varieties will often flower twice if the first flowers are cut off after flowering. The same also applies to Centaurea Montana the perennial cornflower. Hydrangreas are one of the best shrubs for flowering in July with a range of flower shapes from delicate lacecap to huge mopheads and some with cones shaped flowers. They prefer moist soil and will take light shade but will also grow in full sun. Give them enough space to grow. They flower on last years wood so if you cut them back, you may not have flowers the next year. Janet Heath – The Garden Mentor Tel 01244 318258

Charity golf day raises £20,000! TArporley Schools Business Trust (TSBT) held their Annual Charity Golf Day at the MacDonald portal Hotel, Golf and Spa on 4th June. The TSBT was formed nine years ago by a local entrepreneur and has been run by a team of dads from Tarporley since then. over the years, the Trust has donated over £250,000 to worthy causes. earlier this year, the trustees retired and passed over control of the trust to a new team of dads, chaired by John Millington. The golf day was entered by 39 teams from around the uK who competed in a Stableford competition throughout the day and there was also a nine hole Texas Scramble in the afternoon. A gala dinner and charity auction rounded off the event. entertainment was provided by Ian Irving, a well known and very funny after-dinner speaker. The winners of the Stableford competition were a team from Volker rail and Gate Aviation took home the prize for the Texas Scramble. “We were overwhelmed by the number of teams who entered this year”, said John Millington. “We also had fantastic support from our sponsors who donated some great prizes for the competitions and the charity auction. We are still counting but we hope to have raised £20,000 on the day”. The organising committee are catching their breath before starting on the organisation of next year’s event, which will be held on 17th June 2010. hEALTh AND BEAUTy Q. I have unwanted facial hairs. Is electrolysis permanent? A. Yes it most certainly is! However, there are a variety of factors which influence the effectiveness of electrolysis. firstly, the skill of the operator – electrolysis is a very skilled technique which takes a long time to perfect so always visit a well-qualified and experienced practitioner for this treatment. Secondly, ‘permanent’ should not be confused with ‘instant’ – many people assume that the treatment will quickly solve their hair growth problems, but electrolysis does take time to be effective so be patient and stick to your treatment plan as advised by your therapist. Thirdly, the cause of your hair growth problems and how you have been removing the hairs previously will have an enormous influence on how effective the treatment is so ensure that you visit a practitioner who takes the time to carry out a consultation process to fully understand your problem and gives you a realistic likely outcome of the treatments. Q. I find that now I am older if I wear mascara on my lower eyelashes by the end of the day the mascara is smudged under my eyes. What can I do to prevent this? A. The obvious answer would be to wear a waterproof and smudgeproof mascara, but these can be damaging for your eyelashes if worn too frequently. you have probably found that as you are ageing your lower eyelashes are becoming more sparse anyway and wearing mascara often just highlights the fact that you have fewer eyelashes. I would always recommend using an eye pencil applied carefully very close to the lower lashes instead of mascara to give the illusion of a full lower lash line. The pencil can be ‘set’ by running a small amount of dark brown matte eyeshadow with a fine brush to prevent the pencil from creeping down your face over the course of the day. If you are unsure about applying this technique visit your local beauty salon for an eye makeup lesson.

Drug drivers targeted in road safety campaign THE death of a grandfather at the hands of a motorist on drugs formed the heart of a hard hitting road safety campaign launched last month. Cheshire West and Chester Council’s road safety team unveiled an educational road safety DVD, called Fatal Distractions at the College of Law. Unlike previous campaigns which focus mainly on the impact of irresponsible driving on the victims and their families, this campaign concentrates on the consequences for those young motorists whose dangerous driving can cause such crashes on the roads of Cheshire. The powerful DVD tells of the death of Ron Birch who was killed on his way home to Telford to celebrate his 58th birthday with family and friends. His transit van was hit by a loaded cattle wagon on the A51 near Tarporley driven by a man whose driving
was impaired by drugs. The DVD has been designed to be used by teachers to explore the consequences of irresponsible driving and includes a lesson plan which allows students to discuss how such collisions can be prevented. Mr Birch’s widow, Fiona and their two sons Andy and Jamie attended the launch to lend their support to the campaign. Councillor Neil Ritchie, the environment portfolio holder for Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “With so many distractions and temptations for newly qualified young drivers to lose concentration or behave recklessly with often tragic consequences, it’s vital that we do all we can to educate people to behave responsibly behind the wheel.” The film includes a mock trial with Judge Elgan Edwards, the Recorder of Chester, held at Chester Crown Court.
