WHAT’S IN A NAME? HOW did the Headless Woman pub get its name? We have the answer in this month’s edition! Well done to Joanna Bright, of Tarporley High School, whose amazing fund raising efforts have earned her a top prize. We’ve got two pages from the school, including some great Comic Relief pictures. Tarporley Vics FC are nearing the end of the season with a good chance of going up, so if you can get along to the ground in the next few weeks and give them your support it will be appreciated.

YOUTH CLUB NEEDED MEMBERS of the Parish Council canvassed the opinions of the students in Year 9 and 10 at the Tarporley High School, to ascertain what facilities the young people in Tarporley wanted to develop. It was important to hear from them and not assume that we knew what they required. It is vital that our young citizens feel part of the village community and contribute to its development. The information that the students provided focused on a number of important themes; Transport; Entertainment; Sports Facilities and somewhere warm and safe to meet. The Parish Council is working to develop better transport links for both the young people and for other members of the village community. Transport is the key to developing some of the other ideas from the students. Improvements in regular transport would allow both young and not so young to access the facilities at the ‘Life-Style’ Centre in Winsford. There is also the possibility of providing transport to specific events and venues, which would mean other entertainment and sports facilities, would also be more readily available. In attempting to provide, ‘somewhere warm and safe to meet’, the Parish Council is looking to find suitable premises where a Youth Club might be established. The intention is not to compete with existing organisations, but to complement what has already been established. It is hoped that the students will form a steering group to be fully involved in the management of such a club and other sporting, social and community developments. Councillors and other members of the Tarporley Community will be meeting again with the students to discuss the next steps. We are encouraged by the mature attitude of the young people who attend the high school and look forward to some exciting developments, led by the young people themselves.

FOOTBALL TALK... TARPORLEY VICS FC
VICS CLING TO HOPE OF PROMOTION IN CLIMAX TO SEASON TARPORLEY Vics First Team is still clinging on to third position of the Cheshire Building Society Cheshire League Division Two. With three wins, one defeat and a draw to their credit recently Tarporley Vics would have hoped to ease the pressure from the chasing pack however our fellow contenders have been playing twice a week to ease their fixture congestion and Warrington Town and
Golbourne have now overtaken Tarporley Vics. The excellent run of results at home has been the mainstay of the Vics’ season to date. The return of Al Taylor from injury and the goal scoring prowess of defensive midfielder Al Rowntree have been the keys to success. Al Rowntree managed to score on three successive home matches, all of which resulted in victories. This fact is all the more remarkable as these are the first goals Al has scored at Cheshire League level! With only seven games left to play this season the team will have to secure seven victories to guarantee promotion, although a “top four” position is the target set for the First Team this year, anything else is a bonus. The Reserves have also enjoyed a good run of form and have won their last two games defeating more experienced opponents. They now sit in an excellent fourth position in the Crewe & District League and they can also look forward to two Cup Semi-Finals in April. The A.J. Trophy Quarter Final win over Bentley F.C. was the pick of the Cup results to date, and this was achieved with a 4-0 scoreline against a team Tarporley Vics Reserves had not previously beaten.

Tarporley Vics players Nick Abson, Luke Heritage & Matthew Dean presented a cheque to John Maddock from Claire House Children’s Hospice. The donation was made up of the proceeds from a pre Christmas bag packing evening at Marks & Spencers in Chester and from a Boxing Day Charity Game which was played between Tarporley Vics Reserves and Tarporley Vics Veterans.
BLAST FROM THE PAST The articles regarding Tarporley Vics history has stimulated even more interest. Peter Willis has allowed me to scan through some local news clippings of the late 1950s & early 1960s which have provided photographs and some interesting facts as can be seen from the examples reproduced here. An AGM and separate match report are from August and November 1958 respectively, whilst the photograph is from the late 1960s or early 1970s. How many of the faces do you recognise in the photograph? All of the other photos and clippings can be found on the “History” page of our website www.tarporleyvics.co.uk.
To keep up to date with further news and our forthcoming fixtures visit our Website, www.tarporleyvics.co.uk, and please come down to Tattenhall for our home games and cheer on the Vics in this important period of the season. Tarporley High School & Bright future for Joanna JOANNA Bright has been singled out for praise after doing some amazing fund raising work. The year 8 student was given the Good Citizen of the Year award from ‘Select Education’ for her fantastic achievements. Last year she supported Operation Christmas Child, McMillan Cancer Support and RSPCA as well as joining the school’s ‘Eco-Warriors’ team to help reduce the school’s carbon footprint. During Year 7 Charity Week Joanna, alongside her friends, organised a talent show for the entire school and executed the auditions and final without any teacher assistance. This event was the most successful event of the week! Joanna has also visited and helped out at a clinic in Nepal which her family support.
Year 8 students at Tarporley High School raised £1,027 during their charity week. After a year group vote they decided to divide the funds equally between MS Support & Cancer Research UK. They ran cake sales, a ‘catch the can’ competition, sweets in the jar competition, talent show, ‘sponge the teacher’ event, and a ‘guess the teacher South Park character’ competition. Tattenhall hope for a successful summer TATTENHALL Cricket Club will be hoping to go one better this season and secure promotion to the 1st Division. After being in the top two for most of last year, they narrowly missed going up from the Cheshire County Cricket League. This year they welcome Indian batsman Madhur Jethlia who is studing at Liverpool University. The club hope that the talented opener will help them push for promotion again. He will have tough act to follow after last year’s overseas player, Trinidadian Damian Lewis who took 50 wickets, including nine on the opening day. The club boast one of the finest and most picturesque grounds in the county, which has been recognised this year by being asked to host a two day minor county game between Cheshire A and the Durham Academy on the 30th June and 1st July. The club runs four senior teams which consists of a 1st and 2nd XI who play on Saturdays, a 3rd XI who play on Sundays and a sociable, but competitive over 40s team who play on a Wednesday evening.
They have a very strong junior section running teams in leagues at Under 9, 11, 13, 15 & 18 level. Each team is managed and coached and they are proud to have 10 fully qualified level one and above coaches in the club. Under 9s and Under 11s have their coaching on Saturday mornings at the club and that begins on 18th April. U13, and 15s have their coaching on Thursday nights, while the under 18s train with the seniors on Tuesdays Tattenhall is also officially been awarded Clubmark from the ECB which demonstrates it commitment to junior cricket in providing a safe and friendly environment for them to play cricket. The first important date on the calendar is 4th April which is known as National Cricket Force Day in the country where all clubs are encouraged to carry out voluntary work on their ground and encourage the local community to get involved and donate services. They hope to have many club members there helping out and are also using this day as a registration day for all our junior members, who

would like to come down and sign up for the season, and maybe help out. Other key dates are listed below:7th April: Outdoor nets begin Tuesdays throughout the season from 6.15pm 18th April: First league game – 1st Team at home to Burnage, 2nd team away 26th April: The 3rd team’s first game – cup match away to Timperley. The 1st team also play in the National Village KO where finalists play at Lords. Tattenhall have won the Cheshire and North Wales section three times in the last six years , reaching the last 32 in the country , but have never managed to get any further. They begin their village KO campaign on Sunday 17th May at home against Halkyn. The club would be delighted to hear from any potential new players from all age groups from seniors to juniors, and of all abilities. TARPORLEY SCOUTS
ONCE again, the 1st Tarporley Scout Group are looking for customers for the Plant Sale Scheme, one of our major fundraising events. Plants will be supplied by the same Cheshire nursery as previously, and therefore we know that they will be of top quality. By placing a large order and having no overheads, we can sell the plants at competitive prices, held from last year, whilst raising funds for the Scout Group. If you wish to place an order please email Steve Davies (
[email protected]), and you will be sent an order form. Orders must be received by Friday May 1st 2009, with the plants being available for collection at Tarporley Scout Hut on Saturday 16th May 2009. For customers who live close to the Scout Hut, Scouts may be able to deliver direct to your door.
PE KITCHENS
A tremendous thank you to everyone who supported our Beavers coffee morning on Saturday 28th February at Tarporley Community Centre. We raised an astonishing £350, which will be shared equally between Tarporley War Memorial Hospital and Tarporley Community Centre. The event also helped our Beavers to complete their Friendship Challenge Badge.
