DEAR READERS WELCOME to the December edition of Tarporley Talk. There is always so much going on at Christmas - and the festivities get into full swing in early December with the switch on of the lights in Tarporley and Tarvin. Watch out for Santa on the Round Table float, who will be dishing out gifts acroos the area and collecting for charity at the same time.

We’ve got a nice Christmas recipe, some advice on how to avoid piling on the pounds over the festive season and lots more besides. There is a feature on how a furniture company used their woodworking skills to bring an old van back to life and an article about the long awaited new playground at Kelsall. As the year comes to an end, so does the old regime at Tarporley Talk. The magazine is now under new local ownership and we hope to make it even more successful in the future. So look out for lots of bright new features over the coming months

200 HOMES TO BE BUILT?
MARINA UNDERWAY
TWO hundred new homes are likely to be built in Tarporley. Three sites have been earmarked by Vale Royal Borough Council at Heatherways, the Brook Farm School site and the existing primary school site on Park Road.
WORK is underway on the £2.5m marina on the Bolesworth Estate in Tattenhall. The marina, on the Shropshire Union Canal, is expected to open in spring 2009. Up to 300 boats can be moored there to access either the main canal network at Nantwich or travel north to Chester.
ECO ENERGY PLAN TWO weather stations could be built at Ashton Hayes and Kelsall as part of an ecoenergy project. Plans have been put forward for the 30ft masts at Church Road, Ashton Hayes and at Longley Lane, Kelsall, to monitor the potential for wind and solar power. The idea is to work out how renewable can be harnessed to meet energy demands in the village. The masts, which will stay in place for a year, have been criticised by some as a blot on the landscape.

10 ways to enjoy an active 10 ways to enjoy an active Christmas Christmas... www.vervehealthandfitness.co.uk
Wrap up warm and go for a 20 minute brisk walk to get your heart pumping. If you have children, they’ll love to go for a walk with you too. Remember to keep the pace fast and fun! Use any Christmas parties as an opportunity for a dance workout. Your children will love to dance around the living room with you too. Be as silly as you want, no-one will see! Remember that childhood favourite, 52 card pick up? When you tidy up the wrappings from all those presents, squat down and stand up purposefully with each handful you scoop up, feeling the strength in your legs and bottom. Pick an exercise and do it while the kettle’s boiling. Good examples are lunges or squats and holding baked bean cans makes it more difficult! Use your bottom step for a quick cardiovascular workout. Stepping on and off your step whilst punching the air for a couple of minutes is a lot harder than it sounds! Set up a Christmas Day friendly competition with your family – who can do the most press ups or crunches in one minute?
Use Christmas TV viewing time as an opportunity to work your upper arms – place your hands beside your bottom on the edge of the sofa and lower your bottom as far as you can and back up again. Repeat as many times as you can. Keep that core tight! Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Lift your knees into your chest slowly, squeezing your abs as you go. Lower feet slowly as close to the floor as possible without touching and repeat. See how many pages of your Christmas Novel you can read whilst holding a plank position! Counteract the sofa slouch with some wonderfully soothing stretches. Go from the smallest crouch to the tallest stretch, from the narrowest shape to the widest stretch. Move slowly and purposefully, enjoying the sensation of stretching out those neglected muscles.

FOOTBALL TALK... TARPORLEY VICS FC TARPORLEY Vics have endured mixed fortunes during November. The First Team have won one game, drawn one game and lost two games since the last report, although they maintain second position in the League, one point behind Moore United F.C. Tarporley Vics poor form has allowed the chasing pack to gain ground and Golbourne, who won 3-2 against the Vics recently, trail by only two points with two games in hand. The other side to defeat Tarporley Vics last month were Warrington Town Reserves, who themselves are two points off the Vics and have three games in hand. The League is entering an interesting phase as we approach Christmas, although the preseason aim of a top four finish is still realistic as all the top teams are taking points off each other. The Cup draws have taken place and Tarporley Vics First Team has two interesting ties to prepare for. In the Cheshire League Presidents Cup Tarporley Vics have drawn Eagle Sports Reserve side at home, a match we are confident of winning after having beaten Eagle’s First Team already this year. In the Chester & District Senior Cup we have drawn Highfield FC from Blacon with the match to be played in Blacon on the 6th December. This fixture is a difficult trip for the Vics, with Blacon sides being notoriously
difficult to break down especially on their own turf. The Reserves side have also enjoyed mixed fortunes of late, suffering heavy defeats in Cup matches to Curshaws FC and Boarhound FC. The side rediscovered some form in the return to League action against Manchester Metropolitan University, beating them 3-1 with goals from Pete Aidley (2) and Joe Marley. Sixteen year old Joe went on to claim the winner against Sandbach United the following week. This game was marred with a serious injury to Danny Lloyd who dislocated a knee joint. With the game being abandoned after 83 minutes had been played the result stands as a 1-0 win although our main concern on the day was for Danny’s injury and our hopes for his speedy recovery. All of us at Tarporley Vics wish Danny good fortune with his recovery and look forward to his return later in the Season.
With Christmas approaching Steve Lloyd and Andy Williams wish to thank the players for their commitment shown so far this Season and they hope that we can all deliver the success at the end of the Season that your commitment deserves. Tarporley Vics would also like to thank the Sponsors and Supporters for continuing to assist with the financial backing that we need to stage football matches. In these times of a “Credit Crunch” we have been astounded by the continued level of support shown and thank you all for allowing us to keep Tarporley Vics moving forwards, on and off the pitch. To keep up to date with further news and our forthcoming fixtures visit our Website: www.tarporleyvics.co.uk

ROTARY CLUB SPREADS CHRISTMAS CHEER THE Rotary Club will be spreading some Christmas cheer in December. Members will be giving away hot chestnuts on the High Street on 5th and 20th December. On Friday 5th, members are taking part in the Christmas lights switch on at Chestnut Terrace, and will be giving away Hot Roasted Chestnuts. OnSaturday 13th they will be collecting for The Neuromuscular Centre in Delamere Forest so you can combine buying your Christmas tree with giving to charity! Finally, on Saturday 20th they will again be out on the High St giving away Hot Roasted Chestnuts and dispensing Christmad cheer.
DECEMBER (dates only) TUESDAYS 9th & 16th 10am-2pm
It has been a busy year for the club, with the Tarporley Carnival in July raising £4000. Preparations for next year’s carnival on 11th July are all ready well under way. In October members helped people park their cars at the ‘Food and Garden Festival’ at The Hollies. At the start of November, the Charity Track day was held at Oulton Park which raised over £1000. If you would be interested in finding out more about Rotary - maybe about joining your local club - then visit the web site www.tarporleyrotary.org.uk President Jim Webb wishes everyone in the area a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. He thanked people for their support which enabled the group to raise cash for Tarporley Hospital, Petty Pool Centre, Leonard Cheshire Disability and Make Polio History charities.

YOUR JOURNEY TO A NEW BATHROOM In the past the bathroom has often played second fiddle to the kitchen when deciding on which of your rooms to refurbish. However, due to the desire for escapism and relaxation in the home, the bathroom is fast becoming first choice! Whether you are looking for an invigorating and refreshing shower in the summer, or a mood enhancing, relaxing bath in the winter months, your bathroom refurbishment done properly with sufficient thought can give you that spar experience every day. We asked Ed Davies of William and Maurice what should be considered before deciding on upgrading your bathroom. He told us that you need to think about an effective design, suitable products and an installer who you trust to do an excellent job. “Your journey to a new bathroom” says Ed “should begin with a designer asking you the right questions”. His view is that all customers know what they like and dislike and that you shouldn’t be told what you want and need. A customer should be given time to consider the options available and be helped in making the right decision rather than being told what their new bathroom should be like. You need to consider how to make the best use of the available space. Your new bathroom should fulfil your needs and requirements as well as being aesthetically pleasing. Once you are happy with the design, you will look forward to the exciting task
of choosing new products. Ed told us that when choosing different products, consideration needs to be given to quality, style, design and elegance. “If you want your bathroom to stay looking brand new despite the fact that it is usually in constant use, it is advisable to purchase good quality goods. These do not always have to be expensive.” He says that if you like a costly designer range, that is great, but make sure you are not just paying for the name. On the other hand, if you choose to spend less, make sure that you do not compromise on quality, after all a new bathroom should last for years. When considering which installer to use, you need to make sure that you get a quality job done and before you employ anyone it is advisable to get references.

William and Maurice pride themselves on the quality of their installation particularly on the work the customer doesn’t see. Ed told us that you need to make sure that the preparatory work is as good as the surface finish. William & Maurice approach the process from a customer’s needs. They will meet you at your house, view your bathroom and listen to your ideas and needs. A design and quotation is then completed with the knowledge of your bathroom’s layout. Brochures are provided so you can make decisions in the comfort of your own home. Once you have made your final decision, they will personally oversee the complete installation of your new bathroom to their exacting standards. Testimonials are available. EXTRAS FOR CHRISTMAS Syrup Glazed Parsnips
Sage and Chestnut Stuffing
Serves 4 Ingredients:
Serves Ingredients:
700g Parsnips peeled and quartered 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil 25g-50g Unsalted Butter 2 Large Tablespoons Golden Syrup Salt and Pepper
10 Sage Leaves 4 Onions diced 100g Sausage meat 125g Breadcrumbs 50g Chestnuts 1 Egg Salt and Pepper
Method: 1.The parsnips can be boiled in salted water for 2 minutes before roasting. Place a tray in the oven to heat up with some olive oil. 2.Add the parsnips and keep turning till golden brown. Then add the butter and golden syrup until caramelised. Season accordingly.
Method: 1.Place diced onions into water and boil until soft. Then separate the onions from the water and pat dry. 2.Finely chop the chestnuts and sage and add to the onions. 3.Add the rest of the ingredients and thoroughly mix. 4.Season lightly and roll into medium size balls. Roast in the oven for 5 – 10 minutes on a medium heat (160-170˚c).
Chefs Tip: The reason we use Golden Syrup is it can take more heat than honey which tends to burn very quickly.

OLD VAN IS PART OF THE FURNITURE! ROBERT BENNETT OF THE THE craftsmen at Brownlow specialise in traditional hand crafted furniture, kitchens and cabinetry, so imagine their surprise when director Rob Bennett turned up with a rotten, rusty and neglected 1949 Morris Commercial, strapped on a trailer. The van is made of wood and clad in aluminium, so with one of their company’s catchphrases being ‘if it’s made of wood we can do it’ the challenge to restore it was on. After six months of TLC the van has been brought back to life and last week past its first MOT in 20 years. With a top speed of 40mph there is little danger of getting a speeding ticket, but the company will be using it for light deliveries across the county.

BROwNLOw FURNITURE COMPANy SHOCkS HIS COLLEAGUES One day it is hoped that it will be the most recognisable van in Cheshire. The van symbolises everything that is excellent about the company which began 10 years ago in Rob’s parents’ garage Attention to detail and craftsmanship are key to the success of Brownlow. They produce bespoke furniture to the exact requirements of their customer. People often come in with their own design sketches which the team transform into some amazing pieces of furniture, or if desired free advice on designs can be given. They make furniture in many different materials including locally sourced oak and maple from the Amish community. The workshop which employs 10 craftsman
and two apprentices was buzzing during our visit. It is amazing to see how furniture goes from the drawing board through the cutting and shaping process and finally to the finished article. Brownlow furniture is a great example of a local business producing a lasting legacy for so many people in the area. You know that the furniture you buy from there has been lovingly hand crafted in the traditional way to last a life-time.

December in the Garden by Janet Heath With winter closing in try seeking out some of the individual plants brave enough to give some interest. Pick a selection of flowers and foliage from your garden, put them in a vase on Christmas Day and admire at close quarters!
winter and can be planted out in preprepared planting spaces in the garden. Look for Minarette or Ballerina columnar apple trees with apples growing close to the main trunk on short fruiting spurs. They are perfect for small gardens either in the borders or planted in large pots.
Maybe you will find a very late rose, the yellow starry flowers of winter Jasmine or Cyclamen or Primula flowers popping up. Euphorbias tend to keep their foliage in winter giving green or purple rosettes of leaves. You are likely to find Hellebore orientalis are blooming well with their large nodding flowers in white, pink and deep purple or the Corsican Hellebore with large sculptural leaves.
Last year I ordered two Minarette apple trees from a specialist supplier. They arrived in mid winter and I planted them in large pots in John Innes No 3, soil based compost. In spring they blossomed, then the fruit formed so I had a few apples to pick this autumn. Not bad for their first year!
If it is mild, scent can come from Sarcococca, the winter box and Viburnum bodnantense Dawn, both of which flower on and off throughout winter. Winter flowering cherry trees will also blossom in mild periods of winter for a few months. December is not too late to order bare rooted trees and roses from specialist nurseries. Fruit trees are despatched over
Roses ordered as bare rooted plants are often cheaper than buying when in leaf. Planting in a well-prepared planting hole to which you have added some well rotted compost or manure will give them a good start and beautiful flowers next summer.

Thought about joining Tarporley & District Round Table? Are you: * Between the ages of 18 & 45 * Interested in doing something practical to support local charities, and good causes within our community * Up for a bit of a laugh * Oh yeah – and male. Tarporley & District Round Table is a group of local men, from various walks of life (Farmers, finance, engineers, et al), all living in Tarporley and the surrounding villages, who meet up regularly (generally every other Monday) & undertake a variety of social activities. Often ones that you would not otherwise get a chance to do. For example, in the last 12 months or so, we have: Paintballed; croqueted; abseiled, played cricket; pottery’d; made our own Christmas Record!; archery’d; sailed; golfed & much more.. In the coming months we will be: skiing at the Chill FactorE; Pub Olympics at the Crown; Skittles at the Bickerton Poacher; a treasure hunt. In addition, we undertake our extremely rewarding community activities, such as: * In conjunction with Rotary Club, we organise & run the Tarporley Carnival * We accompany Santa’s float around the local villages, in the lead up to Christmas * Put up, and take down, the Christmas Trees on Tarporley High Street * Organise and accompany several coach loads of
local pensioners to an evening of “Christmas Revelry” at Sainsbury’s with music by the Tarporley Silver Band. We are a thriving Round Table, that values are allegiances to our local Community. Beyond this, Round Table is an organisation that provides us with tremendous opportunities to meet socialise, & even work with like-minded people nationwide, and we are proud to be associated with all the great work carried out by Round Tablers throughout the UK . Although we are a healthy, active Table, we are constantly thinking about “Tomorrow’s Tarporley” and are extremely keen for new blood to come & join us, and help carry the baton into the next decade & beyond. If you think you might be interested – or you are just curious – please contact one of us on the numbers below, or just speak with any Tabler you might know. We’ll invite you along to one of our evenings as a guest – no obligation whatsoever – and you can see if it’s for you. Personally, I don’t think you’ve lived until you’ve clung to the back of a trailer driving between Ashton & Barrow in a freezing hail storm, with Santa by your side! Now is a good time to join as our Burns Night celebrations are quite simply unmissable! Getting away from Gas & Oil Eco energy advice with Simon Sherriff
OIL is a limited resource, sought after by an increasing and oil hungry population. It is undisputed that at some time demand will outstrip supply, and at this point prices will begin to rise again. The days that heating oil was truly cheap are well and truly gone, so what are the alternatives:
that controllable. You cannot switch it on and off like a gas boiler. Once its on its on. There are also dedicated wood boilers now on the market and these are increasingly popular. Like your wood stove, these are loaded daily and generate vast amounts of heat in a small amount of time. Log boilers are bulky and require an energy store or accumulator tank to heat a property efficiently.
1. Heat Pumps Heat pumps are a form of efficient electric heating. They come in several different forms, the most common being the ground source heat pump. This utilises warmth stored over the summer in the ground to heat a property efficiently in the winter. Heat pumps are not suitable for retrofitting into older houses, but can be very effective with indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
3.Wood Pellets The newcomer and top of the wood heating family. Wood pellets are made from sawdust, a by product of sawmills and are therefore environmentally sound. Unlike logs, the pellets are small, and the boilers much more akin to modern oil and gas boilers with fairly rapid response times. Wood pellet heating is controllable and automatic. The boilers automatically ignite, and put themselves out according to the demand in the room or house.
2. Logs Wood can be utilised in several forms, the simplest being a wood burning stove. If you have a local source of wood, a wood burning stove can be an extremely cheap and effective way to heat a house. Disadvantages of wood are: It is labour intensive; Logs need to be stored and dried out for up to 6 months to get the moisture content down to 30% or less;. Logs are not
If you are thinking of changing your heating system, there ARE alternatives, some of which may be much more cost effective than you might have considered. Call us on 01244 460144 to discuss your requirements or look on our website www.ecoenergydepot.co.uk

Golf club is perfect for weddings and parties PRYORS Hayes is a welcoming club for players of all ages, ability and gender, which benefits from an inclusive and friendly atmosphere.
The club provides first class facilities, including buggy-hire, a cosy club house with formal and informal seating, a bar and high quality yet reasonably priced food Set amidst rolling Cheshire countryside, Pryors Hayes is the perfect place for a relaxing yet challenging round of golf. The clubhouse restaurant offers you the chance to sit and enjoy a meal with panoramic views of the course. This year, Pryors Hayes Golf club was a finalist in “Most Welcoming Club” in the Clubhouse awards, chosen from nearly 3000 golf clubs throughout the UK. The building also houses a Pro Shop, which has a good selection of balls, gloves and clothing as well as special offers on equipment. Outside of the club house is the patio area which is bordered by heather and greenery. Overlooking the 18th green and practice green, the patio is a great place to enjoy a cool drink in the afternoon sunshine. The attention to detail is everywhere, from the flower beds outside the clubhouse, to gravel pathways and manicured fairways; this is a club where the owner and ground staff are committed. Pryors Hayes is the perfect location for the reception of your wedding, christening or family party. We aim to provide everything to make you special day be as memorable and
enjoyable as possible. The private function room has a panoramic view of the golf course and the surrounding Cheshire countryside, including views across to Eddisbury Hill and Kelsall Hill. The function room seats up to 80 people, and can cater for 150 in the evening. We employ a full time chef and a team of experienced kitchen staff, so we are able to offer every style of menu from buffet to full course dinners. Please contact us for sample menus. Pryor Hayes is located along quiet country lanes which will ensure you have a quiet and relaxing time, but being situated just a few miles from Chester and the M56/M6 motorway network, we are also accessible and easy to find. Golf has so much to offer: exercise, friendship, fresh air and space – all contributors to a healthily lifestyle. Pryors Hayes, sits within open farmland and has view across beautiful Cheshire countryside and Kelsall and Eddisbury hills. Being a fairly level parkland course, players of any age can enjoy exercise, fresh air and the beautiful scenery. The course has been thoughtfully designed so that the 9th and 18th holes both finish at the club house. This means that younger golfers, and those limited for time, can still enjoy nine holes of golf without being miles away from the club house. All part of the service How often to you check your oil and coolant levels? Even more importantly, how often to you check your tyres – pressures, tread and condition? Driving with correctly inflated tyres is vital for safety and according to a recent survey you can’t rely on garage air pumps as one in six is out of order! Incorrect tyre pressures affect every aspect of driving on both wet and dry roads – your car will use more fuel and antilock breaks work less well when tyres are under inflated. Spotcheck Valeting offer a free tyre and level check with every valet they carry out – trained by Autoglym to clean your car to show room standard, the Head Valet, Mike Arthur, is also a qualified mechanic so you can be sure that he knows exactly what is
required. So avoid a winter breakdown or something worse and call Mike to book your winter protection Valet and your free tyre and level check. “Gift vouchers available”

Light up a life to remember someone special CHRISTMAS can be a joyous time for most of us – but if someone special is no longer with us it can be difficult. This is one of the reasons why the Hospice of the Good Shepherd team are giving people the opportunity to remember someone special in a positive way by lighting up a life in their memory. Light up a Life is your chance to dedicate a light on one of the special trees as a memorial to a loved one, friend, neighbour or colleague. The hospice will be holding a special remembrance service on Sunday 7th December, between 4pm and 6pm. Contact the fundraising team on 851811 or visit the website at www.hospiceofthegoodshepherd.com
