TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Tel. 01829 733496
Local Election Boundary Changes FOLLOWING the formation of Cheshire West and Chester as the new local authority the Boundary Committee has invited parish councils and individuals to submit proposals describing the electoral wards considered to be most suitable for their community. The criteria must be to achieve as near equal representation as possible for each elector and to reflect the area’s community identity. The wards may be represented by one, two or three councillors, which ever may be considered to be the most effective. Tarporley Parish Council has resolved to put the following proposals to the Boundary committee. For a single Cheshire West and Chester councillor ward the parishes of Tarporley, Rushton, Utkinton, Tiverton and Tilston Fearnall.
For a two councillor ward the parishes of Tarporley, Rushton, Utkinton, Tiverton, Tilston Fearnall, Foulk Stapleford, Huxley, Beeston, Little Budworth, Duddon, Clotton Hoofield and Iddinshall. For a three councillor ward the parishes of Tarporley, Rushton, Utkinton, Tiverton, Tilston Fearnall, Foulk Stapleford, Huxley, Beeston, Little Budworth, Duddon, Clotton Hoofield, Iddinshall, Tarvin and Kelsall. The Boundary Committee will consider these proposals in conjunction with proposals submitted by other parties for the whole of Cheshire West and Chester. They will publish their draft recommendations in November after which they will consider any alterations or objections that may be submitted. The Boundary Committee’s final recommendations will be published in the spring of 2010

IN THe NeWs BUNBURY resident Alex Sanders has been installed as the new curate at St Helen’s Tarporley, St Thomas’s, in Eaton, and St John’s Church, Cotebrook. THE next Tattenhall Parish Council meeting will be held on Monday 5th August, 7.30pm in the Barbour Institute. RICHARD Coates has said his goodbyes after retiring as head teacher of Tarporley Primary School. He has been teaching for 37 years and been head at Tarporley since 1990. ANN Barnett has retired as head teacher of Utkinton St Paul’s CE Primary School after 16 years in the role. TARPORLEY Brownies raised £283 for the St Helen’s Church Tower appeal by lining up pennies from the Lych Gate to the Rising Sun and inviting people to add to the total. The church needs £100,000 to fix the faulty tower. BEESTON View care home, in Clotton, donated £350 for the Alzheimer’s Society. THE 300-berth canal marina at Tattenhall has been officially opened. The first narrowboats have arrived at the marina which has been built at a cost of £2.5million. Chocolate dream: Tarporley C of E Primary School PTA organised a fabulous Wonka Ball last month. Guests were invited to the exclusive event by Willy Wonka himself via a golden ticket! The ball took place in the Castle Suite at the Macdonald Portal Hotel Golf and Spa which was adorned with colourful candies. The themed event included excentrically named tables such as ‘Hair Toffee’ which had exotic flower centre pieces and were scattered with sweets. After dinner guests enjoyed live music from Jacob’s Ladder and a raffle that included the prize of a visit to Tarporley’s real life chocolate factory - The Old Fire Station Chocolate shop to see how they make their chocolates. A highlight of the evening was when staff wheeled out the scrumptious chocolate fountain with a host of tit bits to dip into it and enjoy. When it was all over the guests were left wondering had it all been a fantastic dream........or was that really a glass elevator?

Carnival was a huge success THERE was a fantastic turnout for the Tarporley Carnival last month. The annual event attracted 2,000 people who lined the route through the town centre and then onto the community centre field for the fair. The parade was amazing, with the likes of the fire brigade, girl Guides, Tarporley Done Pre-School, Tarporley Primary, high school cheerleaders, karting club and Army cadets on the march. The Primary School entry made one of the biggest splashes when around 50 members of the mafia ambushed head teacher Richard Coates with water machine guns!! The arena was filled for the afternoon with performances from the silver band, Highland Pipers, Dog Display team and local Cheer leaders. The final popular event was a series of mini athletic events for the children who had either been in the parade of simply attended. There were over 20 stalls, from a variety of local causes, charities and churches as well as a number of clubs and commercial organisations selling their products or advertising their services. The newly formed Tarporley Business Alliance were there recruiting members, and also donating a number of prizes to a bumper raffle. Tarporley Carnival day is a tradition kept alive by the efforts of the Rotary and Round Table Clubs, organised by a committee throughout the year of build up. Any members of Tarporley community who are interested in helping to make future carnivals a success are invited to make contact with this year’s chairman Tony Yeates 01829 730136. Richard Sutton, area chairman for the Rotary Club, presented Tarporley Primary School with their certificate for the best parade group.

Chris completes golf marathon
COMPLETING 18 holes of golf can be quite arduous at times as it can mean a walk of over five miles. So for Chris Barker to complete four rounds in one day it was especially tough. But eight handicapper Chris did it for a good cause and raised hundreds of pounds for Claire House Children’s Hospice. Chris and his colleague Daniel Frost, who work for Collingwood Search and Selection, at the New Portal Business Park, undertook their golfing marathon last month. They began their odyssey at the Portal Hotel Championship Course in Tarporley where they completed the first two rounds, before moving on to Eaton Golf Club in Waverton for the final two rounds. Peckforton Castle is a racing certainty! Peckforton Castle is hoping to become an odds on favourite this summer … at race courses around the country! For the recently crowned ‘Small hotel of the Year’ near Tarporley, is now the proud owner of a two-year-old racehorse aptly named ‘Peckforton Castle’. And the gelding took his first look around his ancestral home with a walk through the castle’s grounds. The Naylor family, who own the castle, turned to nearby Rob Lloyd Racing Stables when they decided to buy the horse. As two of the largest local employers it was a natural partnership which they hope to turn into a winning one when the horse earns his racing stripes later this year. Chris Naylor, who is chairman of Peckforton Castle Hotel, is delighted to welcome the horse to his hotel which was recently awarded a zoo licence and is also home to an exotic collection of birds of prey and peacocks. He said: “I am delighted to own this
magnificent horse and very grateful for all the advice and guidance that Rob Lloyd has given me. He has helped us achieve our dream of owning the perfect racehorse and hopefully the horse will attain the same level of success as the original Peckforton Castle has done!” The horse will be stabled and trained at Rob Lloyd Stables and hopefully groomed for racing stardom. It was purchased from the world-famous Tattersalls bloodstock auctioneers at Newmarket, its training has already started and it is expected to start racing in August. Peckforton Castle will be trained by talented trainer, Pat Morris who, prior to becoming a trainer, had a successful career as a jockey during which time he rode around 50 winners for the racing yards of Alan Jarvis, Willie Mullins and several other well known and respected racing yards. From left: Tony Naylor, Peckforton Castle and Jockey, Pat Morris and Chris Naylor.

HeAlTH AND beAUTY Q. I am very fair skinned and I am going on holiday to a hot country. I always burn, so should I have some sunbed sessions before I go to protect my skin? A. I would never advocate the use of sunbeds. A suntan is the skins response to exposure to harmful radiation in order to protect itself. In short, a tanned skin is a damaged skin. If you are very fair skinned take sensible precautions – apply a very high factor sunblock at regular intervals, stay out of the sun during the hottest hours and wear a hat. If you want to go brown – fake it with a self-tan product. Either build up the fake tan gradually with a product applied daily or visit a professional therapist for fake tan treatment. Don’t forget that fake tan is purely cosmetic and will not protect your skin from the sun. Q. I have small unsightly red veins on my cheeks, how can I remove them? A. These small red veins are often called ‘thread veins’ or ‘dilated capillaries’ and the ones that have a centre with ‘legs’ radiating out from the centre are called ‘spider naevi’ due to the fact they look like little red spiders! There are a variety of solutions to your problem. Masking them with a remedial camouflage cream or green tinted concealer may be suitable. If this is not acceptable they can be successfully removed with either laser or short wave diathermy, which is also often called advanced electrolysis. Not everyone is suitable for these treatments so ensure that your qualified therapist gives you a consultation prior to treatment. Prevention is always better than cure with most skin problems so ask your therapist about measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of the formation of further red veins.

AUGUsT IN YOUr GArDeN Gardening by Janet Heath AUGUST can be a dull month in the garden as the spring and early summer flowering shrubs and perennials are over and tree foliage can look a bit tired. With a bit of planning, you can have colour in the garden if you concentrate on flowering perennials and some shrubs. Flowering shrubs include such favourites as hydrangeas, Hypericum Hidcote with its shiny buttercup yellow flowers, Lavatera, which flowers for weeks in shades of white and pink and Buddleia, try the variety Black Knight with its deep purple flowers. If you go for flowers, there are many perennials that will reliably flower every year especially if you have a sunny border. Campanula lactiflora is tall with clusters of bell flowers in white or pink. For something different and if you have slightly damp soil, consider Inula hookeri which will give you large, yellow delicately fringed daisy flowers about 75cm (30ins) tall in July and August. Pair it with scarlet or deep pink Dahlias for a bright show of summer colour. Gypsophila or Baby’s Breath is an old cottage garden favourite with tiny button white flowers on tall stems (75cm (30ins) which will give you an airy cloud of white. In the vegetable garden you should keep your, salads, tomatoes, beans and courgettes watered. If you pick them regularly, they will continue to produce. Beans and peas will tend to stop producing if pods are allowed to mature. Late salads and radishes can be sown for cropping in autumn. Try some of the salad leaves for winter such as Land Cress which is similar in flavour to watercress but easier to grow in fertile soil that does not dry out. Spinach can also be sown for winter and spring cropping again in rich fertile soil. August is a good time to clip hedges for the last time in the year. Lavender can also be clipped back after flowering for bushy growth next year. Remember not to cut back into wood where there is no green growth, as this will kill the plant. Lawns may well be looking tired after long dry spells but they will come back again after early autumn rains. Rather than waste water on the lawn, just accept the situation! TATTeNHAll COmmUNITY AssOCIATION SINCE the Barbour Institute in Tattenhall is being used so much more now, we need some valuable help for our caretaker, who does a sterling job of looking after all the user groups and meetings, as well as the building itself. We are looking for someone who can step in on the odd occasions when it is extremely busy or to cover holidays. The work would include setting up for groups and clearing away mainly. If you could spare a bit of your time occasionally get in touch with Hilary as soon as possible. We are currently working on getting some computer courses as well as other courses set up - these could be for all levels and abilities. In order to do this we have to show there is a need and provide figures showing how many people are interested in doing various courses. We are, therefore, compiling a list of people’s names & phone numbers and what their interest/s would be, as well as what level they are at (ie; beginner, intermediate etc). This could possibly help us obtain funding towards the necessary equipment & tutors. If you are interested in pursuing any educational course or hobby please could you telephone or preferably email Hilary (see below) with your name, phone number and suggested course/ hobby information (also stating what level you are at). Contact Hilary Scarratt Tel: 01829 770516 or email:
[email protected] We are still asking for anyone interested in learning French or Greek here at the Barbour Institute to register their interest. Classes will be at both beginners and intermediate level. Whether these classes run will depend on the level of interest expressed, so if you are interested please do contact the tutor Chris to let him know. You can call him on; 07803 584 705 or email;

New chapter for former roadside cafe A ROADSIDE cafe that has lain empty for years on one of Cheshire’s main routes is to become a new bookstore, thanks to the hard work and entrepreneurial spirit of book-lover David McPhie. Bookstore at Oakmere is creating 10 new jobs and will open in early August occupying the 3,400 sq ft of the former Little Chef premises on the A556 at Oakmere, just a mile west of the crossroads with the A49 at Sandiway. It will be offering discounts on a range of books in almost every category from fiction, biographies, cookery and children’s books to a more diverse range of titles including transport, history, nature, archaeology, philosophy, the arts and science. 58 To advertise call 01244 350398
The venture is the vision of David McPhie whose philosophy is to offer huge discounts with 95% of the books stocked at half-price or in most cases even less. Says David, “I believe that Bookstore at Oakmere will be an asset to the local community within mid and West Cheshire, and become a tourist attraction in its own right alongside the many other venues already enhancing the Delamere Forest area.” He added: “In these tough economic times that we find ourselves in, it is crucial for businesses with something in common to work in partnership with each other to offer the customer something extra. This is what Bookstore at Oakmere is all about.”

rimestoppers is unique. Founded nationally in 1988, it is the only UK independent Charity working to help solve crimes. Cheshire Crimestoppers, a regional Board promoting the Crimestoppers message in your area, was established in 1998. our Board comprises volunteers drawn from across Cheshire east, Cheshiire West, Halton and Warrington. increasingly, witnesses to crime, and those who know who may have committed a crime, are reluctant to go directly to the police, or to give evidence in court. We allow you to avoid both by anonymously contacting a dedicated national call number, 0800 555 111, with information about crime, at any time, 365 days of the year. Callers are not asked for their name, or for any other means of identification. A caller’s number can not be traced and does not appear on itemised telephone statements. We pass information to the police but are not part of them

and no policeman will ever know who has called us. in some cases, a successful prosecution may result in the informant being eligible for a cash reward.
please keep our number 0800 555 111 in a handy position near to your telephone, or pre-loaded onto your mobile-you never know when you may have information that will help to catch a criminal!
You may also contact us by e-mail through the national website www. crimestoppers-uk.org where a fully encrypted system protects your anonymity. the site also provides more information about the work of Cheshire Crimestoppers and about the fight against crime at a national level We are currently involved in a variety of campaigns including combating drug crime, gun and knife crime, domestic violence, hospital theft, business crime and arson. We are also keenly aware of the important role we can play in encouraging people in villages and suburbs to identify those responsible for local crime.
Cheshire has been consistently amongst the top performing Crimestoppers regions. During 2008 we exceeded all previous performance in calls. this led to 221 arrests and to the recovery of stolen goods and confiscation of drugs to a value of £722,000.
