2007 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty Trisha Thompson - Queen

All Photos of Royalty by Murray’s Photography

I am very excited and honored to be your 2006 – 2007West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen. I graduated from The Bush School in 2006. During my high school career I was the Co-Editor of the yearbook and a leader of the Social Committee, which planned school dances, and Bridges, the diversity club. I also swam three years of Varsity Swim Team for Chief Sealth High School. Having just returned from my first year of college at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, I am very eager to get reacquainted with the community of West Seattle. During my time in the small town of Galesburg I occupied my time with studying and was involved in the Knox College chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters; however I very much missed Seattle. I am pleased to say that I will be attending Seattle University as a sophomore in the coming fall. I am looking forward to the many Hi-Yu and community events this summer, especially the Seattle Seafair Pirates Landing on Alki Beach and the Junction Merchants Sidewalk Sale and West Seattle Junction Festival. I have been enjoying my summer relaxing and preparing for the coming school year. My interests include reading, drawing, and working out. I would like to thank the Lions Club for their support in sponsoring me last summer as a candidate and all the members of Hi-Yu for their hard work and dedication to keeping this organization and its scholarship program alive. I would also like to thank my parents for all their loving support throughout my endeavors in my education

Keili Geller - Princess Aloha West Seattle! I am honored to be on the 2006- 2007 West Seattle HiYu Senior Court. When I was a young child growing up in West Seattle I always admired the girls on the court riding on the float. Now I am thrilled to be one of them. The highlights of my past year since my representation of West Seattle Hi-Yu began are that I climbed a mountain called Sunpeak in British Columbia, I coached two cheerleading teams, was the Teen Event Coordinator for Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Western Washington, performed in three plays and I was the Senior Class Spirit Officer. All of this excitement culminated with my graduation from Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. I will start my first year at Guilford College in Greensboro North Carolina in August. I plan to double major in Theater Studies and English and possibly a concentration in Political Science. Thank you to my family and friends for all of their love and support. Big thanks to the American Legion Post 160 for sponsoring me last summer. I appreciated your support. Enjoy the festivities!

2007 Miss Junior West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty Gabrielle Carufel - Queen

All Photos of Royalty by Murray’s Photography

Hi, my name is Gabrielle Carufel and I am proud to be your 2006-2007 HiYu Junior Court Queen. I am 9 years old and attend Holy Rosary School. Next September I will be in the 4th grade, art, science and math are my favorite school subjects. I love animals and hope to become a veterinarian or animal rescuer. I play CYO soccer for Holy Rosary and U10 softball for Gagnon State Farm Cheetah girls. When I am not busy with Hi-Yu activities this summer you can find me at the Rainier Golf and Country Club pool where I love to swim. For the past five years I have taken dance lessons at Kathy's Studio of Dance. I have been in Brownies for the last 3 years and look forward to being a Jr. Girl Scout this fall. Besides these activities I enjoy traveling and camping with my family, playing with my sisters Isabella and Bianca and being with all of my friends especially Princesses' Haley and Hailey. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to represent West Seattle in many parades throughout the year. Being a Queen or Princess is a great experience. Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible. I have had a great time this year attending the Valentine's Tea held at the Alki Homestead Restaurant, selling our beautiful Holiday ornaments and socializing at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, and being Santa's helper at Coffee to a Tea with Sugar. I also enjoyed helping decorate the parade float themed “Pearls of the Sea”. It is beautiful and I hope that you all will have an opportunity to see it. Hi-Yu is active in many West Seattle community events this summer. Please come up and say Hi, I look forward to meeting you!

Hailey Miller Princess Hello, Friends of West Seattle Hi-Yu! My name is Hailey Mckenna Miller and I am honored to represent West Seattle as your Princess. I am 9 years old and I attend Hope Lutheran School. I love to read. I have read the entire Harry Potter series. I love to sing! I sing with a choir in West Seattle called Endolyne Children’s Choir. I have learned to sing with a group and sing solos. I like to act in my drama class through Stone Soup Theater through my school. I am a good soccer player. I play defender/midfielder with West Seattle Soccer Club. Currently, I am learning to play golf with a program called The First Tee of Greater Seattle. I am getting good at it and can’t wait to get my own set of golf clubs. This summer, I am continuing to take swimming lessons, enjoy my 10th birthday, and participate in many Hi-Yu activities. Hi-Yu has been a really fun experience for me. I have learned about building a float and have gotten my clothes covered in paint! I have learned how to speak in front of a large group of people and not be as shy. I have participated in community service activities and hope to do more! I am learning a lot about my community and getting more involved. My next service project I would like to do is read to preschool children at a bookstore! I like being a Princess and riding on our float “Pearls of the Sea” all around Western Washington! I look forward to seeing you all at the West Seattle Hi Yu Summer Festival events!

Haley Pierce Princess My name is Haley Pierce and I am 9 years old. I’ve lived in West Seattle on and off for the past 5 years and I attend Alki Elementary. I will be a fourth grader this fall. Taking care of my animals are a big part of my life. I have a hamster named Charlie, a cat named Matty and a turtle named Paris. I would like to be a Marine Biologist when I get older since I love dolphins and whales. I have been taking ice skating lessons for over 6 months. I enjoy swimming and playing basketball with my mom up at Hiawatha. I love to write stories, color, make little storybooks, and make things with different materials I find around the house. Hi-Yu has been very fun and I love wearing a beautiful gown and seeing peoples smiles during the parades. My mom and I got to work on the float a lot together and it was fun glittering and painting. I would definitely encourage any girl my age to try out for next year's court.

2007 West Seattle Hi-Yu Community Float

ou Y k n a h T eers Volunt The theme “Pearls of the Sea” was chosen for the 2007 West Seattle Hi-Yu float in December. Many planning From concept art to final product, the float comes meetings were held and the together as a community building project. design went through numerous changes before the float made its debut five months later on May 19th at the Port Townsend parade. Working long hours in a garage space generously donated by Joe Henney and in their own homes, more than 30 volunteers spent over 400 hours putting their own creative touches on this year's float under the guidance of Karen Haynes-Palmquist. The Junior Court can take special pride in the float since they were regular workers at the float work parties along with the adults. They even brought brothers and sisters along to help out The end result is a spectacular underwater scene where seahorses gallop beside the float and fantastic fish frolic in the sea grasses around a shipwreck. The shipwreck's treasures are guarded by a giant octopus and crab. Junior court royalty Queen Gabrielle Carufel, Princess Hailey Miller, and Princess Haley Pierce are seated in clam shells at the front of the float with a treasure chest full of jewels, while senior court royalty Queen Trisha Thompson and Princess Keili Geller wave from the shipwreck. Starfish decorate the sides of the float to complete the scene. The royalty represent West Seattle admirably as “Pearls of the Sea” travels to at least nine parades from May through October throughout the greater Puget Sound area.

2007 West Seattle Grande Parade Saturday, July 21st at 11am along California Ave SW

Organized & Sponsored by American Legion Post #160 Photos by Peter Richards

On Saturday July 21st at 11:00 AM the American Legion Post 160 will start the West Seattle Parade along California Ave, starting at SW Lander St. and continuing south 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmonds St. Highlights of the parade will include the All City Marching Band. This band is made up of students from all over the Seattle School District, and they meet twice a week throughout the summer rehearsing for all the parades in the city. The Burien’s Kennedy HS band will also be there. Visiting from the Lake City area the Lake City Vigilantes will be entertaining the crowd, also the Seattle Seafair Pirates, and numerous other groups. The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard taking your Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities, including the Port Townsend Rhody Float, the Marysville Strawberry Festival float, and the Port Orchard Fathoms of Fun float amongst others. Keep buying those Hi-Yu buttons! An exclusive to the West Seattle parade, the Seattle Police Motorcycle Drill Team will be hosting the Vancouver BC Police Motorcycle Drill Team. This is the only appearance they make in the Seattle area. The West Seattle parade, was started by the American Legion Post 160 in 1934 by Post commander Orville Rummel. He was also instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu Association and in 1984 he created an annual award that is given to a community member each year for outstanding community service. Be sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award winner at the beginning of the parade. Please contact the American Legion regarding parade participation.

2007 West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival Souvenir Program

Hi-Yu History and Information Kacey and the late Charlie Jung preserved a few mementos of their many years as active Hi-Yu devotees, which shed a little light on happier times in West Seattle. Twenty-nine years ago, the West Seattle Herald in it’s 50th Anniversary edition, acknowledged that Hi-Yu had also been around for at least fifty years. Hanning wrote that in 1923, with World War I behind it and the Great Depression seven years away, West Seattle was going through a period of rapid expansion. The business and professional community thought it rightful that they thank their clients, patients and customers appropriately for their patronage. What evolved was the first “All West Seattle Picnic.” The story doesn’t say where it was held, so we have to presume Lincoln Park was the site. In succeeding years, the event wore such titles as “Potlatch,” and “Mardi Gras.” The picnic, despite a one-year revival by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, succumbed to a combination of burgeoning red tape, mounting costs and disinterest and the years of celebrations which drew thousands to play games, enjoy entertainment and talent shows, the coronation and the drawing for a new car have faded into obscure history. In 1934 a contest was held to come up with a new name for the revived summer festival. The name that was chosen was “Hi-Yu” and that is why even though the celebrations and picnics preceded 1934 “Hi-Yu” is officially only seventy years old. The name Hi-Yu in local Puget Sound Chinook Jargon means “Big Time” or “Plenty”. Looking back, it’s interesting to note that the first “Pirates” to land at Alki Beach about 1934, were Sea Scouts of the “Yankee Clipper” sponsored by the West Seattle Lions Club and skippered by Captain John Kelly. Even at the fiftieth celebration, the scouts, switching roles, manned their worthy craft to guard West Seattle from the real Seafair Pirates who annually invaded Alki to kick off Hi-Yu. The tradition continues to this day. In the late 30’s an event was added to the program of Hi-Yu which attracted worldwide acclaim, a “heel-and-toe” race, commencing at the West Seattle YMCA, circled Lake Washington. Breaking into anything resembling a trot or running gait disqualified a competitor. Also popular during this same period were the boxing and wrestling matches held at Hiawatha Play Field. Still hooked on athleticism, the 1949 Picnic coincided with the official Northwest AAU swim meet at the new Colman Pool. It featured national-level swimming and diving championship events. In 1949 everyone in West Seattle was supposed to wear a red hat during the ten days of Hi-Yu. If you got caught without one, you could get hauled before a “Kangaroo Kort” run by Speed Winquist and presided over by Superior Court Judge William Long. This is the origin

of the red shirts and coats worn by Hi-Yu officials to this day. In 1950 under the leadership of President Don Waller Hi-Yu became an official partner of Seafair which included Hi-Yu in its schedule of events. West Seattle’s American Legion Grand Parade included scores of floats and other entries which appeared in neighborhood parades in the surrounding Puget Sound area. During several subsequent years, Hi-Yu was coordinated by Ted Best (then Secretary of the West Seattle Commercial Club) of Ted Best Associates. Some of the Hi-Yu presidents in that era included Dick Kennedy, John Kaufman and Arvid Andresen. When Ted Best was appointed to the City Council, Orville Rummell became Coordinator for a brief period and headquartered in a second-floor space above Nielsen Florists at California and Oregon. Ted Best renamed his firm West Seattle Associates. During the term of Leon Wagner in 1967, a group headed by Doris Richards and Warren Lawless, left the ad department of the West Seattle Herald to buy West Seattle Associates. They were hired to run Hi-Yu for -the next seven years. In addition to Wagner, presidents during those years included Jack Hanning and Bob Grieve. The premier event throughout all the years of Hi-Yu is the Grand Parade, then, now and hopefully always, a project of West Seattle American Legion Post 160. The parade actually preceded Hi-Yu by a few years. Bob Grieve was perennial chairman, and directed the event from a meter-maid vehicle which traversed the parade route many times as the parade proceeded south on California Avenue from Admiral Way to the Junction. A couple sections of bleacher which seated dignitaries were placed in front of Van Gilder’s and later Perry’s Furniture Store and parade entries were announced as they approached. The 1973 official Hi-Yu Parade Float, designed by Moe Beerman, won significant acclaim and still remains emblazoned on the exterior of the West Seattle Post Office as one of the “Murals of West Seattle.” The 56foot float, “Magical Moments in the Land of Oz,” depicts the famous “yellow-brick road” inhabited by “Dorothy’s” friends the “Cowardly Lion,” the “Tin Man” and others and also introduced parade goers to Hi-Yu Queen Julie Basket and princesses Kathie Dempsey and Sandra Selle. The 1973 Hi-Yu festival was significant also because the Park Department, after having given its approval for the Kid’s Jamboree and the Carnival at the Golf Course and Stadium, withdrew its invitation two months prior to the events. The Golf Tournament was allowed to be held but it was suggested that the other activities could be held at Hiawatha Play Field. Park officials however feared the activities would mess up their newly renovated track and greensward and the surrounding neighbors petitioned the

The ferry “HiYu” in 1926, no doubt a predecessor to the original naming of Hi-Yu in 1934.

court for a restraining order to kill the use of the play field for the carnival. Hi-Yu prevailed, but serious illness of the Carnival operator accomplished for the protesters what they failed to win in court. Hi-Yu would like to thank Warren Lawless (who refuses to guarantee the accuracy) for his help in compiling this interesting Hi-Yu trivia. Hi-Yu invites any resident of West Seattle who has a collection of photos, clippings and other memorabilia of past Hi-Yu festivals to consider contributing them to Hi-Yu with the hope that they could be archived in a permanent Hi-Yu collection at the SWSHS Log House Museum. Hi-Yu deserves a place in West Seattle history. Please contact the Hi-Yu Info line at (206) 932-3345 or contact us through our website at www.HiYu.com.

2006 Miss Seafair Erin Waid This past year has been a very exciting one for me and my family. I was honored to represent West Seattle in the Seafair Scholarship Program for Women last summer, and further honored to be crowned Miss Seafair 20062007. I have had the opportunity to meet the Blue Angels, watch the hydroplane races on a V.I.P. yacht, and attend events with some of the most influential people in Seattle. I am so grateful for this experience and owe it to the love and support of my family and the West Seattle community. Thank you Hi-Yu for always believing in my abilities. Also, a special thank you to the West Seattle Lion's club for sponsoring me as a candidate for Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu. I hope you will join me at the many Seafair festivals. The rest of the summer is sure to be filled with fun!

Concert in the Park

July 17th, 2007 - 7pm -8:30pm (weather permitting)

The Hiawatha Community Center is proud once again to present the annual Hi-Yu Concert in the Park.. Weather permitting the West Seattle Big Band will present a concert of big band favorites for your listening pleasure. So bring out your lawn chairs, pack a picnic basket, and come out and enjoy the tunes, on the East lawn of the park, behind the field house. The West Seattle Big Band is proud to be a part of this annual event. Many of the members of the band are alumni of West Seattle High School and look forward to this family event. The band performs year round at venues throughout the Seattle area, but the concerts in their own backyard are the most fun. The West Seattle Big Band regularly donates earnings from performances to school music programs in West Seattle, as well as loaning equipment, and providing performances for fund raisers. This past year the band has had joint performances with, Chief Sealth HS, Evergreen HS, Nathan Hale HS, and Illahee MS. They purchased a drum set for Aviation HS Jazz Club, tuned the pianos at West Seattle HS, and participated in an auction at Loyal Heights ES that raised over $100,000 for that schools PTA. In addition to schools, the band performs for the West Seattle Senior Center, and West Seattle Hi-Yu as well as other community groups in the area. The band is under the direction of Donn Weaver, with vocals by Stephanie Cortes. You can reach band manager Jim Edwards at (toll free) 1-877-632-9135. See westseattlebigband.com for more information.

The concert in the park takes place with Hi-Yu court in attendance.

West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club The West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club was founded in 1934 with the purpose of promoting the safe and responsible enjoyment of outdoor activities, conservation of our natural resources, and protection and restoration of our environment and wildlife. Every year the club sponsors boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 to attend the Washington State Junior Conservation Camp on Orcas Island, where they learn survival skills, fly tying and fishing techniques, current environmental issues, and have a lot of fun. The club also operates the Roger Dahl Rifle Range at the West Seattle Stadium. Its goal is to promote the safe and proper use and care of firearms for hunting and marksmanship. The range holds Hunter Education as well as Rifle Marksmanship classes and participates in rifle and pistol leagues including 4 Junior League matches each year. The range has seen at least one of its members go on to shoot in competition at the 1982 Summer Olympic Games. Regular events include fishing outings, Clam Bakes, Salmon Bakes, the Kid’s Fishing Derby, and more. For more information, please contact Jerry Mascio at (206) 719-3528.

2007 West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival Souvenir Program

Volunteer for Hi-Yu and Make a Difference As a young boy growing up in West Seattle I remember so many summers with Hi-Yu VOL UNT events it has left an indelible stain on my soul. EER S! The festival brings back so many fond memories - from running the streets in my Hi-Yu red coat and Styrofoam hat, a la Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins - to the giant rides during the fair at West Seattle Stadium to the fishing derbies at Seacrest when there was no Salmon season. I think the buttons are even the same price they were back then. The parade drew thousands of people along California Ave SW and had people hanging from the roof tops of businesses while some even engaged in water balloon fights with the Seafair clowns and the mighty, and much scarier Seafair Pirates. Why were they scarier you ask? You see, they used to land at Alki Beach, and kidnap the Hi-Yu royalty for real! It’s all real when you’re looking up from 8 years old as that screatching metal sound of the pirate sword drags the pavement. I HE ALL T watched in amazement as the ladies were tossed over the shoulder AKE ! E M and whisked off to an unknown destination. In the end, the entire ENC FFER I D community which had met the Pirates at the water’s edge headed down to Lincoln Park in convoy for a community picnic complete with a stage, pie eating contests and of course performances by the Hi-Yu candidates and royalty. An all day event. My most memorable year was the year I rode the Moby Duck with the Pirates all the way to the park. You may ask yourself, “What does this have to do with volunteering for Hi-Yu?” It’s simple really. I am now 37 with 6 children of my own, and I am still heavily involved in West Seattle Hi-Yu for one simple reason. I want my children to Diane Kennedy experience these events and develop their own memories Owner that will last a life time. If they manage to volunteer to help out Hi-Yu, or any volunteer organization, then my task is Denise Hanson Manager complete. They have learned a valuable lesson in life. It takes people that care to make a difference. Won’t you take a Independently Owned moment to care? Volunteer for Hi-Yu to walk the parade route with the float, help build the next one or even organize an event. Build memories that last a life 3820 California Ave SW 11001 16th Ave SW, #100 time! 2007 West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival Souvenir Program

13th Annual West Seattle Garden Tour July 22, 2007 9am - 5pm

Building on the historic attendance and fund-raising successes of 2006, the West Seattle Garden Tour celebrates the Art of Gardening for its 13th year on Sunday, July 22. This year’s tour features an eclectic mix of eight residential gardens (including gourmet collections, drought tolerant and tropical plants, stunning pond and water features, wildlife habitats and creative uses of recycled materials) that will renew enthusiasm for your own garden. One of this year’s gardens was even featured in the February 2007 edition of Sunset Magazine. Additionally we’re pleased to welcome Marianne Binetti, wellknown northwest horticultural expert, weekly Seattle Post Intelligencer columnist, and television personality and author of numerous Pacific Northwest gardening books as our guest lecturer. The 2006 West Seattle Garden Tour was the most successful yet, attracting over 1,100 tour-goers as well as raising $11,000 for ArtsWest and $2,500 each for three specially selected beneficiaries. Each year, the Garden Tour donates a significant portion of the day’s proceeds to various West Seattle community non-profit organizations that promote horticultural education, community gardens and the arts. The proceeds from the 2007 Garden tour will benefit The Seattle Children’s Playground, (a playground for developmentally disabled children), Southwest Seattle Historical Society and Log Cabin Museum (signage and The Gargoyle Garden repairs to sprinkler system), Highland Park Elementary (to repair a much-
