2000 Hi-Yu Community Float

West Seattle Hi-Yu brings in the new century with the community float “Mythical Millennium.” The senior court represent the three Graces whose charm and beauty bring joy and goodwill to all. The steps of the temple lead down into the courtyard, where a vase bubbles over with the waters of life and the Junior Court enjoy the sun and music among the animals and beings of the time. The float has won awards in every parade we’ve attended from Tacoma, Washington to Port Townsend, Washington. We expect to represent the West Seattle Community at nine parades this year, including the Seafair Torchlight Parade in This year’s button is sure to be a collector’s item in downtown Seattle. Summer Festival Mythical Millennium 2000

2000 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Senior Court Royalty First Princess - Heather Cook Hi, I’m Heather Cook, your 2000 First Princess. Hi-Yu has been a big part of my life for the past 15 years. Ever since I was crowned as the Jr. Court Queen in 1985, my family and I have been very actively involved in West Seattle Hi-Yu. As a child, I used to watch the Sr. Court in amazement, and dream that one day I'd be in their shoes. Well, that day has finally come, and I am enjoying every minute of it. I am extremely excited and honored to represent West Seattle this year as our award-winning float brings about that same awe that I once felt, to people of all ages in neighboring communities.

Queen - Michelle Mierz

Hello, West Seattle, my name is Michelle Mierz and I am your 2000 Queen. The Hi-Yu festival has given me this great opportunity to represent you around Western Washington and also at the Miss Seafair Pageant. After the summer, I will move to Los Angeles where I will be attending the University of Southern California; go Trojans! I was already admitted to their Marshall School of Business. I also plan to minor in dance and join the Trojan Dance Force. The summer of 2000 will definitely be one of the greatest experiences of my life. I will be traveling with my two wonderful Princesses Heather and Jilli not to mention my wonderful family. Mom, the chaperone, Dad, the float driver, Sean, my biggest fan, and Rocky, my peace, are the best royal family a Queen could desire. I also have been saved by Tiara's long phone conversations that organize my busy life. To all my dear friends and fans: I love your smiles and support. Let's make this a year to remember!

MYTHICAL MILLENNIUM 2000

Speaking of awe-inspiring experiences, this past year I ventured to one of the busiest communities known, New York City, where I spent 9 months studying Communication Arts at St. John's University. In addition to the pressing schedule that comes along with living in a dorm and keeping up with my school work, I found time to participate on the Varsity Soccer Team, becoming one of only 7 players to participate in every conference game. This fall I will be returning to St. John's to continue my pursuit toward a career in broadcasting. As for now, I am enjoying all the events and festivities that Queen Michelle, Princess Jilli, and I are involved with this summer. I am looking forward to many more activities to come, and I hope to see all of you at the American Legion Grand Parade on July 22nd.

Second Princess - Jilli Victorio Hello, my name is Jillibean Victorio. I am your 2000 West Seattle Hi-Yu 2nd Princess for the new millennium! I am student at Washington State University, majoring in advertising communications with a minor in marketing. First, I would like to thank my family and friends for all of their support. I would also like to give a huge thanks to all of the members and volunteers of the West Seattle Hi-Yu for all of their time and energy to make this festival a success. This past year, I have been away at school, anxiously awaiting summer. I've eagerly anticipated seeing our beautiful float, royalty and most of all, our lovely community. Coming back home to West Seattle gives me something to be truly honored about and proud to represent. In the fall I will return to Washington State University while simultaneously getting ready for my spring semester of studying abroad in Madrid, Spain. For the time being, I am enjoying my summer in Seattle, traveling to other communities with the Hi-Yu Royal court. I hope all of you will take the time to enjoy the 2000 Hi-Yu Summer Festival and support all of the events of our Mythical Millennium.

MYTHICAL MILLENNIUM 2000

West Seattle Hi-Yu

Summer Festival Mythical Millennium 2000

A Little Random Hi-Yu History Kacey and the late Charlie Jung preserved a few mementos of their many years as active Hi-Yu devotees, which shed a little light on happier times in West Seattle. Twenty-five years ago, the West Seattle Herald in it's 50th Anniversary edition, acknowledged that Hi-Yu had also been around for fifty years. Hanning wrote that in 1923, with World War I behind it and the Great Depression seven years away, West Seattle was going through a period of rapid expansion. The business and professional community thought it rightful that they thank their clients, patients and customers appropriately for their patronage. What evolved was the first “All West Seattle Picnic.” The story doesn’t say where it was held, so we have to presume Lincoln Park was the site. In succeeding years, the event wore such titles as “Potlatch,” and “Mardi Gras.” The picnic, despite a one-year revival by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, succumbed to a combination of burgeoning red tape, mounting costs and disinterest and the years of celebrations which drew thousands to play games, enjoy entertainment and talent shows, the coronation and the drawing for a new car have faded into obscure history. In 1934 a contest was held to come up with a new name for the revived summer festival. The name that was chosen was “Hi-Yu” and that is why even though the celebrations and picnics preceded 1934 “Hi-Yu” is officially only sixty-six years old. Looking back, it’s interesting to note that the first “Pirates” to land at Alki Beach about 1934, were Sea Scouts of the “Yankee Clipper” sponsored by the West Seattle Lions Club and skippered by Captain John Kelly. Even at the fiftieth celebration, the scouts, switching roles, manned their worthy craft to guard West Seattle from the real Seafair Pirates who annually invaded Alki to kick off Hi-Yu. The tradition has survived generally intact. In the late 30’s an event was added to the program of Hi-Yu which attracted world-wide acclaim, a “heel-and-toe” race, commencing at the West Seattle YMCA, circled Lake Washington. Breaking into anything resembling a trot or running gait disqualified a competitor. Also popular during this same period were the boxing and wrestling matches held at Hiawatha Play field.

The premier event throughout all the years of Hi-Yu is the Grand Parade, then, now and hopefully always, a project of West Seattle American Legion Post 160. The parade actually preceded Hi-Yu by a few years. Bob Grieve was perennial chairman, and directed the event from a meter-maid vehicle which traversed the parade route many times as the parade proceeded south on California Avenue from Admiral Way to the Junction. A couple sections of bleacher which seated dignitaries were placed in front of Van Gilder’s and later Perry’s Furniture Store and parade entries were announced as they approached. The 1973 official Hi-Yu Parade Float, designed by Moe Beerman, won significant acclaim and still remains emblazoned on the exterior of the West Seattle Post Office as one of the “Murals of West Seattle.” The 56-foot float, “Magical Moments in the Land of Oz,” depicts the famous “yellow-brick road” inhabited by “Dorothy’s” friends the “Cowardly Lion,” the “Tin Man” and others and also introduced parade goers to Hi-Yu Queen Julie Basket and princesses Kathie Dempsey and Sandra Selle. The 1973 HiYu festival was significant also because the Park Department, after having given its approval for the Kid’s Jamboree and the Carnival at the Golf Course and Stadium, withdrew its invitation two months prior to the events. The Golf Tournament was allowed to be held but it was suggested that the other activities could be held at Hiawatha Play Field. Park officials however feared the activities would mess up their newly renovated track and greensward and the surrounding neighbors petitioned the court for a restraining order to kill the use of the play field for the carnival. Hi-Yu prevailed, but serious illness of the Carnival operator accomplished for the protesters what they failed to win in court. Hi-Yu would like to thank Warren Lawless (who refuses to guarantee the accuracy) for his help in compiling this interesting Hi-Yu trivia. Hi-Yu invites any resident of West Seattle who has a collection of photos, clippings and other memorabilia of past Hi-Yu festivals to consider contributing them to HiYu with the hope that they could be archived in a permanent Hi-Yu collection at the SWSHS Log House Museum. Hi-Yu deserves a place in West Seattle history. Please contact the Hi-Yu Info line at (206) 932-3345.

2000 Seafair Pirates Take Alki

Saturday July 8th, 10am to 5pm

Junior Pirates Take Heed!

Seafair Pirates Landing

Yo mates! All you pirate wannabes.

The Seattle Seafair Pirates will once again lay siege to our fair West Seattle community when they storm the beach at the annual Hi-Yu Pirate’s Landing at Alki. They will arrive on Alki to pillage and plunder during the Hi-Yu Summer Festival. The action-packed day starts at 10:00 AM and will offer family fun and entertainment. Stage shows featuring local bands will entertain throughout the day. The “Beaters”" will start things off playing 60’s and 70’s Rock and Roll. For some of the band members this is their third time at the beach. The first time was back in 1968! Later in the day “Miles From Chicago”, a rhythm & blues band will close the afternoon out. This is also Miles’ third time at the beach. They wowed everyone two years ago as “Elmore Lewis and the SoulWreckers”. Back also is the “Swashbuckler Beach Vault”, a US Track & Field sanctioned NW Regional Championship Pole Vaulting competition sponsored by the Willamette Strider’s Track Club. Vintage Chevrolet Corvettes from the Tacoma Classical Glass Corvette Club will be on display. SEAFAIR and West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and this year’s candidates will make an appearance. Kids love participating in the Pirates Look-alike contest sponsored by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, with prizes including the Grand Prize of a One Year Family Pass to the Pacific Science Center, donated by Seattle’s Pacific Science Center. (see side bar for more information) Returning this year is the “Legend’s Tug-O-War contest”. Teams from establishments in and around West Seattle have gone through elimination tournaments to reach the finals held at the beach. Who will be the champion? Will they be good enough to take on the Seattle Seafair Pirates? Enjoy the food provided by different vendors as you stroll the Alki promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach. Lest we not forget the main event, The Seattle Seafair Pirates! The excitement builds as the time for the landing approaches. While the tide dictates the actual landing time, somewhere between noon and 1pm, when you see the “Yankee Clipper” Sea Scout Sailing Vessel sailing near by and it’s cannons banging away during the “battle,” you know the pirates are very close. The Seafair Pirates will “Hit” the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army th Reserve. This year should be spectacular. It is the Seattle Seafair Pirates 51 year. Remembering what has happened in past years, what fiendish tricks could the Pirates have up their sleeve for this special event? Come join us for a great day at the beach!

Imagine yourself joining the Seattle Seafair Pirates for a little swashbuckling fun on Alki beach July 8th. Dress up in your favorite pirate costume and show up on Alki beach between noon and 1 PM on July 8th to register at the West Seattle Kiwanis booth located near the bathhouse. The Seattle Seafair Pirates land somewhere between 2 and 3 PM (depending on the tide) and judging will be shortly after landing. Prizes will be awarded. The lucky winner will receive a one-year family pass to the Pacific Science Center, donated by Seattle’s Pacific Science Center. This event is open to kids and Junior Pirates of all ages (1 to 99+). Organized by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club.

These guys are fun! Comprised of several well-known and seasoned musicians from the Seattle area, the band plays a classy variety of energetic blues, soul, and R&B songs that make you want to dance. The band has performed at many places around the Northwest, including the 1998 Seafair Pirates’ Landing in West Seattle as “Elmore Lewis & the SoulWreckers”. The band consists of leader Miles from Chicago on bass and vocals, Tom Brighton and Kevin Wallace on guitars and vocals, Scotty Harris on Saxophone and KT Tuttle on drums. All talented musicians, these guys know how to lay down a beat and belch out music that is fun for those who like to dance, watch, or listen.

Weather permitting, the West Seattle Big Band will perform some of your favorite Swing Era music along with a mix of Jazz and Blues including Vocals. This will take place on a stage set up on the East Lawn, behind the Hiawatha Field House. Now entering their fifth year of existence, the West Seattle Big Band is riding the resurgence of swing music into the new millennium, while providing the West Seattle area with a community based big band they can call their own. They perform at functions and events throughout the Seattle Metro area, well continuing to support the performing arts in West Seattle area schools. The West Seattle Big Band was formed in the Spring of 1996 to promote the performing arts at West Seattle High School. The band was made up entirely of alumni from West Seattle. Since that time about half of the alumni have stayed on and have been performing with the group ever since. Other alumni have come in, along with community members who have helped to fill out the ranks. The Band continues to support music education in the schools, by performing at fund raising concerts, benefits and auctions. The band also sets aside half its earnings for distribution to area schools. This year they will be paying the All City Band tuition for several students from West Seattle High School.

Summer Festival Parades West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade

The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard taking your Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities, including Tacoma's Daffodil Festival float, the Seafair float, the Port Townsend Rhody float, the Port Orchard Fathoms of Fun float and probably a few other floats as well. Keep buying those Hi-Yu buttons!

Photo from Michael Palmquist

Highlights of the parade will include the All City Marching Band. This band is made up of students from all over the Seattle School District, and they meet twice a week throughout the summer rehearsing for all the parades in the city. The Lake City Vigilantes, the Seafair Pirates and numerous other groups will be entertaining the crowd also. Leading the Parade we anticipate having the King County Police Honor Guard.

On Saturday, July 22th, at 11:00 AM, the American Legion Post #160 will start the West Seattle Parade along California Avenue, starting at Lander St. and continuing south 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmunds Street. Parking available at West Seattle High School on parade day. Enter from Walnut Ave (east side of school).

An exclusive to the West Seattle parade: the Seattle Police Motorcycle Drill Team will be hosting the Vancouver BC Police Motorcycle Drill Team. This is the only appearance they make in the Seattle area. The West Seattle Parade was started by the American Legion Post #160 in 1934 by Post Commander Orville Rummel. He was also instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu Association, and in 1984 he created an annual award that is given to a community member each year for outstanding community service. Sadly, Orville passed away last summer, but the legacy he has created will live on for generations to come. Be sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award winner at the beginning of the parade.

West Seattle High School 50 Year Monogram Club

When school closes in June, the two-year renovation of West Seattle High School will begin. Its landmark status means the original brick building and first addition (east wing) will remain the same on the outside.

The West Seattle Monogram Club is composed of former Varsity Letter Winners, who are dedicated to keeping the spirit of West Seattle High School alive. Members must have won a varsity letter 50 years ago. Each year the club sponsors a number of scholarships to those students who combine athletic achievement and academic excellence in their high school years.

The West Seattle High School Foundation has been established and is dedicated to helping make the new WSHS a world-class education facility as well as the central core of the West Seattle Community. Contributions are tax deductible and may be earmarked for visual and performing arts, library, academic excellence, gymnasium, athletics, etc. For more information contact: West Seattle High School Foundation, 4075 SW Stevens St., Seattle, WA 98116.

The West Seattle High School 50 year Monogram Club was organized in 1965 and has been in continuous operation since. Members of the club are those who won a Varsity Monogram for athletic participation while in school. Purposes of the Club are: (1) To establish a scholarship fund for deserving and qualified WSHS Seniors who will continue their education in college. (2) To perpetuate friendships made while in school and in Athletic competition.

(3) To reunite the members in good fellowship at “Dutch” luncheons on the first Thursday in February, June, September and give December.

The Alumni Association continues to scholarships with up to $25,000 being given this year -$15,000 to WSHS Seniors and $10,000 towards their second year for last year’s recipients. The earnings from our investments and generous contributions of the alumni have enabled us to start giving the second year scholarships.

Most important are our members who live outside the city and in various communities throughout the nation and still actively participate in our purpose. Their support puts our program over the top. West Seattle Historical Society - Log House Museum Log House Museum - “Birthplace of Seattle” st

Location 3003 61 Ave SW (one block south of the Statue of Liberty on Alki Beach in West Seattle) Hours:

Thursday.............................12:00 - 6:00 PM Friday ...........................10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Saturday & Sunday ............12:00 - 3:00 PM

The Birthplace of Seattle/Log House Museum has been open since th November 13, 1997 (the 146 anniversary of the landing of the Denny party at Alki Beach) and is located in an authentically renovated turnof-the-century log structure on Alki Point. This structure was once the carriage house of the "Fir Lodge" estate, one of Alki's first year-round homes built by prominent Seattlelites William and Gladys Bernard. The current exhibit is 47 Voices Remember, which features personal recollections, photographs, and mementos of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s from over forty current and former residents of Alki in West Seattle. This exhibit displays new and interesting artifacts, documents, and photos from the Museum’s collections. It has been designed to provide opportunities for visitors to add their personal stories to the nostalgic and animated descriptions of this community in its earlier days. The exhibit is a result of our Oral History and Memory Book projects, funded by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and neighborhood matching funds, and include comprehensive audio and video interviews of selected seniors whose first hand remembrances of the history of this area produce a vibrant link to the past. A compilation “highlight” film of the interviews, Tales of West Seattle, is available for viewing in the video room of the Museum. The Memory Book, West Seattle Memories -- Alki, is on display in the Smith Gallery. Both items are also for sale in the gift shop . The next exhibit, The Spirit Returns, which will explore the interaction between the native Duwamish people and the early pioneers, and the impact of this meeting on both cultures, is now planned for opening in the fall of 2000. Dr. Bullerts upcoming documentary, Chief Seattle, will be featured in this exhibit. nd

Speaker programs are held every month (2 Thursday at 7:15 PM) and have included a wide range of historical and entertaining topics such as Luna Park, carousels, pioneer cooking, and western Washington architecture, as well as native American storytellers. The museum has become a heritage educational tour destination for school groups and special interest groups. Other heritage education opportunities available to area schools include traveling heritage trunks and resource libraries, school assembly programs; and a “teen docent” program. A second Memory Book is now being developed which not only focuses on businesses which evoke fond memories but exist no longer but also businesses that continue to contribute much to West Side (206)

commerce and community. If you know of people who h a v e f i r s t- h a n d remembrances of early West Seattle businesses please have them contact the museum and/or members of the Longtimers group which meets the 3rd Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m. SWSHS is about to embark on a second oral history project which will feature oral interviews of Native Americans of the Duwamish Peninsula as well as other ethnic cultures who have contributed enormously to the heritage of this community during the 20th century. As with the previous oral history project, the production of audio and video tapes and a memory book are planned so that these memories are preserved for future generations. Make plans soon to visit the Log House Museum, its gift shop and commemorative courtyard. People interested in becoming museum docents, special project volunteers, or SWSHS members are e n c o u r a g e d t o c a l l D i r e c t o r , Patricia Filer at (206) 938-5293.

West Seattle Hi-Yu

Summer Festival Mythical Millennium 2000

Hi-Yu Summer Festival Membership Information Hi-Yu Membership Information The Hi-Yu Summer Festival was started in 1934 by merchants in West Seattle as a way to thank the community for their business. These merchants recognized that the success of their businesses depended on the community. Through the years the task of designing and constructing the West Seattle Community Float, planning and staffing the Hi-Yu events, raising funds to support these activities as well as the scholarships awarded to the Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen and Princesses has shifted to a group of community volunteers and a few stalwart service clubs. Hi-Yu still looks to businesses in West Seattle for the lion's share of the necessary funds, as well as to local residents (through button sales and memberships). We have been forced in the past few years to try additional fund raising activities - car washes, auctions, garage sales, plant sales, etc. - but unfortunately these are very time consuming, not hugely profitable and take valuable time away from working on actual Hi-Yu events. Hi-Yu would like to thank all of you - businesses, service clubs and individuals - who have donated time, money or both to this year's festival. Hi-Yu desperately needs your help in order to survive. You may feel you have nothing to contribute, but I guarantee that whatever you can offer (lending a hand to help build the float, helping to plan events, working at the Pirates Landing, selling buttons at the Street Festival, etc.) would be very much appreciated. General Membership meetings are held all through the year at 7:15 p.m. at the West Seattle Senior Center. Call the Hi-Yu Info Line at (206) 932-3345 or check the website - www.hiyu.com - for up-to-date information, or to leave a message. On the back of this booklet you can find application forms for 2000-2001 membership. For meeting times seethe schedule on page 15. If you wonder what you get out of your contribution to Hi-Yu, just look around at the smiles on the children’s faces as they participate in these family events and think about the message of a caring community these activities send to them.
