1999 West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival
1999 Souvenir Button & West Seattle Hi-Yu Community Float Souvenir Button
West Seattle Hi-Yu Community Float The West Seattle Hi-Yu Community Float "Far Away Places" is a floating garden featuring golden pagodas, traditional ceremonial arches, flowering cherry trees and a teahouse. Cranes and turtles inhabit this garden setting. Children dance while majestic swans and sailing boats glide in the lagoon. The haunting strains of Puccini's Madam Butterfly ensure that this sparkling tribute to our sister city Kobe, Japan will be unforgettable. The float was designed by Paul Wilds and has won awards at every parade we've been to so far this year:
"Far Away Places" was the theme selected this year in honor of our sister city, Kobe, Japan. This year's button is a beautiful souvenir and a great way to help support the West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival. West Seattle Hi-Yu is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization and all the Hi-Yu community activities listed on the Program schedule are funded by business, non-profit and individual community member donations. You can buy a button at all Hi-Yu events and be sure to look for the Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu candidates, this year's royalty and Hi-Yu members at the intersection of Alaska and California Avenues during the Junction Merchants Street Festival, July 8-11. While the button helps fund these activities, needless to say your $10 individual membership, $30 non-profit membership and $50+ business membership is vital to the future of West Seattle HiYu. Of critical importance, also, is the need for community members to participate in planning and production of the summer festival. The Hi-Yu organization has been reduced to a very few hardworking individuals who just don't want to see this 65year-old festival retire. There are many ways you can help with this year's festival or bring your friends and neighbors and add your names to the Hi-Yu membership list next year so we can continue to have the summer festival our community deserves. For information on meetings and activities, please call the Hi-Yu Info Line at (206) 932-3345 or talk to us at the Junction Merchants Street Festival. Official Hi-Yu Website www.HiYu.com
Daffodil Parade (Tacoma): "Best From Another Festival" Irrigation Festival Parade (Sequim): President's Award Rhododendron Parade (Port Townsend): Grand Sweepstakes Trophy I hope you were watching the 1998 Seafair Torchlight Parade. The West Seattle Hi-Yu Community Float won the “Sweepstakes Trophy,” the Torchlight Parade's most prestigious award. This year's float took hundreds of hours of preparation by a few dedicated individuals. We barely got it done in time for the Daffodil Parade in April. It wasn't because we started too late. Our designer Paul Wilds was hard at work on the float even before last year's season ended. We could have used your help. This is your float! Next year please get involved. There's a job for everyone. No experience necessary. It's hard to describe the thrill of having the float you worked on win top honors at parades. Come and find out for yourself how it feels. Sarah Chamberlain - First Princess Hello, my name is Sarah Chamberlain. I am your 1999 West Seattle Hi-Yu First Princess. This past year has been one that I will never forget. It began by meeting a great group of girls who were my fellow candidates. After the pageant, my year continued with Queen Auburn and Second Princess Jennifer. We have had a great year together so far.
Auburn Scallon - Queen
I have spent this past year studying commercial photography at Seattle Central Community College. I have also spent numerous Saturdays working on our award-winning float. “Thank you” to our float designer, Paul Wilds. I feel privileged to have not only helped construct a dream, but to ride on it as well.
Seattle Hi-Yu Queen!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank West Seattle. This is a great community, one I am proud to be a part of and honored to represent. I would like to thank the members of West Seattle Hi-Yu for donating their time, energy, and good spirits to make this year possible and an experience of a lifetime.
The first thing I have to do is say a huge thank

you to my family, roommates, everyone at Angelina's and Kathy's Studio of Dance, and of course, every member of Hi-Yu, without who's support, patience, and understanding I wouldn't be here. When asked to write this, I had a hard time putting into words what this experience has meant to me, until my mom told me a story about one of her friends who's earliest memory was of a West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen riding by on a float and waving at him; and that reminded me of watching parades, going to the Pirates' Landing and Junction Merchants' Street Festival every year that I
Hello, my name is Jennifer Rogge and I am your 1999 Second Princess. I have just graduated from Puget Sound Christian College with my AA in Elementary Education. For the past two years I have been working at Academy Gymnastics and Dance of Edmonds where I am one of the head coaches for the competitive gymnastics team. I am also a member of West Seattle Christian Church. These past few months have been a wonderful experience. Auburn, Sarah and I have become great friends, and we have enjoyed traveling to the different communities to represent West Seattle.
back on and smile about. I know I will.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of the volunteers who have helped make this year possible. I would like to thank Paul Wilds for designing a beautiful, award-winning float for us. I would also like to say thank you to my parents who have been so supportive and helpful in everything.

Annual Hi-Yu Car Wash A big thank you goes to Al's Auto Supply (3727 California Ave SW) for allowing Hi-Yu to use their parking lot and water for a car wash held June 12th. Everything cooperated that day to make the car wash a success: we had a good turnout of hard-working Hi-Yu volunteers (most put in at least a two-hour shift, some stayed the whole day 6 hours); the weather couldn't have been better; and we had a steady stream of dirty cars with generous owners. It was a great day to see old friends and meet new community members, and we also got a chance to squirt (by accident, of course) some of our fellow Hi-Yu volunteers.

Seafair Pirates Land at Alki
Seafair Pirates Landing
Junior Pirates Take Heed! Saturday July 17th, 11am to 5pm
The Seattle Seafair Pirates will once again lay siege to our fair West Seattle community when they storm the beach at the annual Hi-Yu Pirate's Landing at Alki. They will arrive on Alki to pillage and plunder during the Hi-Yu Summer Festival. The action-packed day starts at 11:00 AM and will offer family fun and entertainment. Stage shows featuring local bands will entertain throughout the day. The "Beaters" will start things off playing 60s and 70s Rock and Roll. For some of the band members this is their second time at the beach. The first time was back in 1968! Then "Miles From Chicago", a rhythm & Blues Band will close the afternoon out. This is also Miles' second time at the beach. They wowed everyone last year as "Elmore Lewis and the SoulWreckers". Back also is the "Swashbuckler Beach Vault", a US Track & Field sanctioned NW Regional Championship Pole Vaulting competition sponsored by the Willamette Strider's Track Club. Vintage Chevrolet Corvettes from the Tacoma Classical Glass Corvette Club will be on display. SEAFAIR and West Seattle HiYu Royalty and this year's candidates will make an appearance. Kid's love participating in the Pirates Look-alike contest sponsored by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, with prizes including the Grand Prize of a One Year Family Pass to the Pacific Science Center, donated by Seattle's Pacific Science Center.
Yo mates! All you pirate wannabes. Imagine yourself joining the Seattle Seafair Pirates for a little swashbuckling fun on Alki beach July 17th. Dress up in your favorite pirate costume and show up on Alki beach between noon and 1 PM on July 17th to register at the West Seattle Kiwanis booth located near the bathhouse.
Enjoy the food provided by different vendors as you stroll the Alki promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach.
The Seattle Seafair Pirates land somewhere between 2 and 3 PM (depending on the tide) and judging will be shortly after landing. Prizes will be awarded. The lucky winner will receive a one-year family pass to t h e Pa c i f i c Science Center, donated by Seattle's Pacific Science Center.
Lest we not forget the main event, The Seattle Seafair Pirates! The excitement builds as the time for the landing approaches. While the tide dictates the actual landing time, somewhere between 2 and 3 PM, when you see the "Yankee Clipper" Sea Scout Sailing Vessel sailing near by and its' cannons banging away during the "battle," you know the pirates are very close. The Seafair Pirates will "Hit" the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army Reserve. th This year should be spectacular. It is the Seattle Seafair Pirates 50 anniversary. Remembering what has happened in past years, what fiendish tricks could the Pirates have up their sleeve for this special event?
This event is open to kids and Junior Pirates of all ages (1 to 99+).
New this year is the "Legend's Tug-O-War contest". Teams from establishments in and around West Seattle have gone through elimination tournaments to reach the finals held at the beach. Who will be the champion? Will they be good enough to take on the Seattle Seafair Pirates?
Come join us for a great day at the beach!
1998 Winner, Aaron Richards (right)

Annual Fishing Derby Annual Hi-Yu Kids’ Fishing Derby
West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club
It's early Sunday morning. The city is still quiet. Birds are singing and the fish are hungry. It's the perfect time to fish! On Sunday, July 18, be prepared to be awoken by your young, enthusiastic anglers for the annual Kids' Fishing Derby down at Seacrest Marina on Harbor Avenue.
Founded in 1934, the Sportsmen’s Club was established to provide a place where persons of all ages could learn to hunt safely, and legally. The ability of marksmanship with a gun was for sport and safety. The Roger Dahl Rifle Range at West Seattle Stadium has seen hundreds of young people trained in firearm safety and certification.
Fishing and festivities start at 6:00 a.m. and continue until 10:00 a.m., when the prizes and ice cream are bestowed upon the children by the 1999 West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and next year ’s candidates. Best of all, it's absolutely free. Adult supervision for children under 12 is required. Up to 50 fishing poles, provided by the marina, will be made available for use by the youngsters. So get your kids, your neighbor's kids (hey what a great activity for kids' clubs!) and prepare to join in the fishing fun! Call Lloyd Jeter (206) 935-0024, for details.
The club has also been recognized for its efforts to promote conservation of natural resources and the propagation of species statewide. Call Lloyd Jeter at (206) 935-0024 for more information.

Concert in the Park Concert in the Park
S E AT T L E
Featuring the West Seattle Big Band Back again for their third year, West Seattle Big Band will perform from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Tuesday, July 20th. This event will be held at the newly refurbished Seattle Parks Department amphitheater, located on the east lawn of the Hiawatha Community Center (that's on the grass behind the field house, so bring a blanket or lawn chair). This is a weather-dependent concert, so keep your eyes on the fiveday forecast and hopefully La Nina will be kind to us. This 18-piece Big Band has been performing in the area for the past three years. About half of its membership are alumni from West Seattle High School, including retired Band Director Donn Weaver who taught at West Side from 1986 to 1978. The band performs at several events throughout the West Seattle area, performing for fundraisers, street festivals and swing dances. They have performed in the Admiral Congregational Church Performance Series for the past few years. They take part in the annual All -Class Reunion at WSHS, and will be participating in the Summer Music series at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard this August. The band performs music from the swing era as well as updated arrangements of old favorites, including music from the libraries of Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson, Duke Ellington and, of course, Glenn Miller. The group also emphasizes support of the performing arts in public schools. This year West Seattle Big Band will help pay the tuition for a number of West Seattle High School students to participate in the Seattle Schools All-City Marching Band. For more information and availability of the band, please call Jim Edwards at (206) 932-9571. Local musicians who are interested in rehearsing or performing with this group are also encouraged to call.

1999 West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival
Hi-Yu Community Night at the Movies The Admiral Theatre The Admiral Theatre's predecessor, the Portola Theater, was built in 1919. The theater offered a different menu every two or three days, usually a feature film, a newsreel or two and a comedy short. In 1923 and 1924 it fought off stiff competition from the Apollo Theater {which was located on the east side of California Avenue near Edmunds Street). According to the Herald (June 1923), the Portola had "the best in pictures . . . Many will be first runs in the state." In September 1924, the Portola installed an $18,000 pipe organ, a 60-piece orchestral variety that was the biggest in suburban Seattle. Record crowds attended the first performances. The theater also debuted a film with old-time favorite songs, "Led by Miss (Adelaide) Kirkman on the big new pipe organ as the words were flashed on the screen, the audience all joined in and sang. So enthusiastic was this novelty picture received by the audience, that the many people waiting in front to gain admission thought there surely must be some large opera company inside."

Sterling Theatres owned by John Danz, purchased the Portola site and nearby land from realtor W.T. Campbell and hired B. Marcus Priteca to design the new structure. According to the Herald, Mr. Priteca was "reputed to be the best theatre architect on the Coast." The cost of the project ballooned from $60-80,000 in June 1938, to $100,000 in April 1941, then to $200,000 a month later. Ground was broken in July, and storefronts just south of the Portola that housed Campbell's office, Cooper shoe repair, a barber shop and Spick and Span Confectionery were razed. There was a contest to name the 1000-seat theater. The judges were West Seattle High principal Reid Fulton, Seattle City Council member Bob Jones, Herald publisher Clyde Dunn, theater manager Milt Lewis and Danz himself, plus Sterling executives Joe Rosenfield, Jack Sampson and Danz' son Fred as advisers. The July 24, 1941 Herald announced that Mrs. Frank Hunter won the $100 first prize for suggesting the theater be given the name of the neighborhood's major arterial, Admiral Way. Milton Lewis, manager of the Granada (also owned by Sterling), delivered the prize personally. The contest drew 1,061 entries with 300 different names. More than 90 entrants suggested "Admiral," and each got a month's theater pass. In keeping with its nautical name, the Admiral Theater's décor came complete with portholes, seahorses on the exit signs and a giant mast and crow's nest on the building's "upper deck." The Herald announced: "The Admiral will be as different from the old time movie theaters as the original airplane was from the modern Boeing bomber . . .It transcends every preconceived idea of motion picture theatres, and will amaze everyone with its new beauties, its new revelations in comfort, sight and sound." The most unusual features were the availability of portable earphones "for the hard-of-hearing" and the installation of "push-back" seats, "the greatest theatre improvement since the advent of talking pictures!" According to the Herald: "No longer do people have to rise when others seek to enter their row. Now, they merely push back with their feet, the seat moves back, and the enjoyment of the picture continues uninterruptedly."

The Portola held a "big Charleston contest" on its wide stage December 2-3, 1925. Every seat was taken and the foyer was jammed both nights as Evelyn Beahm topped the "fast and furious" competition. The Portola Theater spent $10,000 on equipment and in July of 1929 presented its first talkies, William Boyd in "The Flying Fool" and a comedy, "Go East Doctor." Portola Manager Sol Strauss said his building was ideal for sound movies because it lacked "echoes that often make voices sound 'wooly'. . . The jokes about the 'squawkies' will be out of place, at least in this theatre." Even with the stock market crash in 1929 the Portola was able to draw good audiences to its constantly changing programs.

Come join the fun and enjoy a family night out at the movies! Meet this year's Hi-Yu royalty and candidates for the 2000 court! Buy your Hi-Yu button to help support your community festival! Cineplex Odeon closed the Admiral Theatre on January 20, 1989. Supporters of the theater picketed outside before attending the final show. Two weeks later, the "Save the Admiral Theatre Task Force" of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society formed. In June of 1989 the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board granted the Admiral Theatre "landmark" status. Two months later the Washington State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation named the Admiral Theatre a State "landmark" and nominated it to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This Historic Landmark status, sought vigorously by the SWSHS, saved the Admiral Theatre from the wrecking ball which had been the fate of its competitors in West Seattle. For almost three years the Admiral Theatre's fifty-year-old marquee carried a farewell message: "Th-th-that's all, folks." In December of 1991 Marc and Cecil Gartin purchased the theater and the adjacent vacant service station properties. On April 2, 1992 the years of work to save the Admiral were rewarded with the re-opening of the th theater. The theater's lobby was filled with people celebrating both the re-opening and the 50 Anniversary of the Admiral. Not only is the Admiral Theatre an important part of West Seattle's history, it's an old friend that we've built wonderful memories with. [Sources of Information: West Side Story, a publication of the West Seattle Herald; West Seattle Herald articles and an article in a West Seattle Neighborhood Telephone Directory by Warren Lawless.]
Searchlights swept the skies the night of January 22, 1942, as a "gala Hollywood opening," including patriotic street decorations and a California Avenue parade, saluted the Admiral. The opening-night feature, "Week End in Havana" starring Alice Faye, Carmen Miranda and John Payne, plus an "Our America at War" newsreel and color cartoon, drew 3,000 people. Prices were 35 cents for adults and 11 cents for kids at the massive moviehouse, whose lobby was the size of the entire former Portola building. On January 22, 1948, the Admiral Theatre celebrated its sixth anniversary The Herald did an article on the theater and described it as the "newest and one of the most modern theatres in Seattle. With its push-back seats, fluorescent murals, lobby paintings depicting the landing of Captain Vancouver on the shores of Puget Sound, specially designed carpet to fit the marine motif, and the largest motion picture screen in the city, the Admiral Theatre offers a restful atmosphere, and enjoyable surroundings." The manager at that time was Raymond Coach. Mr. Coach came from New York City where he managed the Hippodrome, one of the most famous theaters in the world. The anniversary celebration included a huge anniversary cake, large enough to serve 1,000 people (baked by Bookters Bakery); a stage review by Clarke's Junior Review and prizes (3 Bendix radios, set of Kinny Ware, a table lamp, a monarch automatic iron, Burkaw heater, wall lamps and Revere Ware) donated by Holert's Appliance Center. In November 1953, the Herald reported that the Admiral had: "the first panoramic wide screen to be installed in a suburban theater. The new E.Z.I. screen that fills the entire stage area is three times larger than the old screen, making pictures more life-like and realistic." In 1973 the Admiral was "twinned" into two 430-seat theaters. The "mast" which had been a part of the Admiral since 1946 was removed when this remodeling took place. In June 1986, SRO (which was bought later in the year by Toronto-based Cineplex Odeon) announced that the Admiral Twin Theater would add four more auditoriums and 762 more seats, possibly by the end of 1987. The six-plex design would take cues from the old Portola, said Bob Bond. "We really see it as a restoration of what's there now, plus an addition," he said in December 1986. "We want to make it look like it belongs." Even though work had not begun by late spring of 1987, Cineplex officials insisted the expansion was still on.

Summer Festival Parades
The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard taking your Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities, including Tacoma's Daffodil Festival float, the Seafair float, the Port Townsend Rhody float, the Port Orchard Fathoms of Fun float and probably a few other floats as well. Keep buying those Hi-Yu buttons!

Highlights of the parade will include the All City Marching Band. This band is made up of students from all over the Seattle School District, and they meet twice a week throughout the summer rehearsing for all the parades in the city. The Lake City Vigilantes, the Seafair Pirates and numerous other groups will be entertaining the crowd also. Leading the Parade we anticipate having the King County Police Honor Guard.

An exclusive to the West Seattle parade: the Seattle Police Motorcycle Drill Team will be hosting the Vancouver BC Police Motorcycle Drill Team. This is the only appearance they make in the Seattle area. The West Seattle Parade was started by the American Legion Post #160 in 1934 by Post Commander Orville Rummel. He was also instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu Association, and in 1984 he created an annual award that is given to a community member each year for outstanding community service. Sadly, Orville passed away last summer, but the legacy he has created will live on for generations to come. Be sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award winner at the beginning of the parade.

West Seattle Chamber of Commerce Photo by Peter Richards
Established in 1920, the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce ("the Chamber") provides a professional forum to discuss and influence policies and programs affecting the business and social climate. The Chamber's leadership, services and advocacy strengthen the economic welfare of businesses in West Seattle and ensure that the West Seattle peninsula is and always will be a great place to live, work, shop and play. The Chamber meetings are a good place to meet and network with West Seattle business people, civic leaders and community organizers. For individuals, the meetings are a terrific place to keep informed about what’s happening in the community. Elected officials and candidates for election frequently make it a practice to address the Chamber and many elected officials are members. The Chamber also has committees devoted to education, transportation, publicity and promotion, the Port of Seattle, business development and land use.
The Chamber has always been active in the community, having led the fight for the new West Seattle Bridge, the Elliott Bay Water Taxi and civic projects such as Hamilton Viewpoint, our “Welcome to West Seattle” signs and the murals of West Seattle. The Dixie Dokken - Executive Director of the West Seattle Chamber Chamber office also sells West Seattle’s only official West Seattle T-shirts for just $15. We would be happy to count you among our members: for businesses the annual dues vary by size and start as low as $150; i n d i v i d u a l s m a y j o i n f o r j u s t $ 8 5 . It supports Holly Preschool at High Point, and Boyer Preschool and Clinic for Spastic Children, and it collects pre-school books and distributes them through food banks, libraries and kindergartens. Over the past seven years, through proceeds of an annual auction, the club has created and endowed a scholarship at South Seattle Community College and made major contributions to music, library and computer technology programs at West Seattle, Chief Sealth and Seattle Lutheran High Schools. The West Seattle club is an institutional member of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Hi-Yu Summer Festival (since its inception) and continues to support and work with schools, organizations and social services on as-needed basis. It is a major supporter of Kiwanis International's World-wide effort to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders, by facilitating introduction of iodine into the salt supplies of third-world countries where lack of the element in prenatal diets causes mental and physical defects and prevalence of thyroid disorders such as goiters. The Log House Museum Log House Museum “Birthplace of Seattle” Location 3003 61st Ave SW (one block south of the Statue of Liberty on Alki Beach in West Seattle) Hours:
Thursday — 12:00 - 6:00 PM Friday — 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Saturday & Sunday — 12:00 - 3:00 PM
The Birthplace of Seattle/Log House Museum has been open since November th 13, 1997 (the 146 anniversary of the landing of the Denny party at Alki Beach) and is located in an authentically renovated turn-of-the-century log structure on Alki Point. This structure was once the carriage house of the "Fir Lodge" estate, one of Alki's first year-round homes built by prominent Seattlelites William and Gladys Bernard. The current exhibit is Alki Coney Island of the West, which features photos and artifacts of some of the local historical landmarks and the story of how the Alki area evolved from a "get away" to one of the most popular and well-known vacation destinations on the West Coast in the 1900's. Alki Birthplace of Seattle, a documentary written and produced by local film maker Dr. BJ Bullert, can be viewed in the museum's video room. The next exhibit, which will explore the interaction between the native Duwamish people and the early pioneers, and the impact of this meeting on both cultures, is planned to open early 2000. Dr. Bullert is currently working on her next documentary, Chief Seattle, which will be featured in the upcoming exhibit. nd
Speaker programs are held every month (2 Thursday at 7:15 PM) and have included a wide range of historical and entertaining topics such as Luna Park, carousels, pioneer cooking, and western Washington architecture, as well as native American storytellers. The museum has become a heritage educational tour destination for school groups and special interest groups. Other heritage education opportunities available to area schools include traveling heritage trunks and resource libraries, school assembly programs; and a "teen docent" program. With the acquisition and preservation of the Log House Museum, the Southwest Seattle Historical Society now has a home to help fulfill its mission to preserve, interpret, and communicate the heritage of the Duwamish Peninsula and Seattle. The SWSHS is currently in the final stages of an oral history project, which preserves the precious personal or family memories of selected community elders through professional audio and video interviews. A summary of "highlight" film will be produced and will be featured in the museum's on-site video library. A Memory Book project is also an effort to collect and safeguard the first-hand WEST SEATTLE CHRISTIAN remembrances of early SCHOOL West Seattle through LYON'S ANTIQUE written stories. Elliott Bay Water Taxi Elliott Bay Water Taxi On December 2, 1888, West Seattle celebrated the inaugural run of Puget Sound's first ferryboat, a steam-powered side-wheeler named City of Seattle. It was an eight-minute ride between Marion Street dock and West Seattle, landing at Louisiana Street (near the foot of Cascade and Grand avenues, now California Way and Ferry Avenue). This boat brought commuters, shoppers and families on holiday across Seattle's waterways. The ferry was gradually replaced with other forms of transportation. Now, 110 years later, the Elliott Bay Water Taxi is offering transportation for commuters and recreational users looking for a fun, fast, easy, and cost-effective way to travel between Seacrest Park in West Seattle and Pier 54 on the downtown waterfront. And it's still just an eight-minute ride across the bay! This foot ferry is bicycle-friendly and it's a great way for your non-West Seattle friends to get to and from all the Hi-Yu events this summer. Catch the water taxi at Seacrest Park on the hour and half-hour and at Pier 54 at a quarter-after and a quarter-to the hour. The fare is only $2 each way without a Metro pass and free if you have a Metro pass or valid transfer. Catch the #37 bus to Harbor Avenue to meet the boat. The Elliott Bay Water Taxi is a demonstration project of King County Metro Transit. For more information, contact: Metro Info (206) 553-3000 24-hour bus information

Membership Information
General Membership meetings are held all through the year at 7:15 p.m. at the West Seattle Senior Center.
The Hi-Yu Summer Festival was started in 1934 by merchants in West Seattle as a way to thank the community for their business. These merchants recognized that the success of their businesses depended on the community.
August – May 1st Monday of the month June 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month July
Meetings are held every Monday Through the years the task of designing and constructing the West Seattle Community Float, planning and staffing the Hi-Yu events, raising funds to support these activities as well as the scholarships awarded to the Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen and Princesses has shifted to a group of community volunteers and a few stalwart service clubs. Hi-Yu still looks to businesses in West Seattle for the lion's share of the necessary funds, as well as to local residents (through button sales and memberships). We have been forced in the past few years to try additional fund raising activities - car washes, auctions, garage sales, plant sales, etc. - but unfortunately these are very time consuming, not hugely profitable and take valuable time away from working on actual Hi-Yu events.
Hi-Yu would like to thank all of you - businesses, service clubs and individuals - who have donated time, money or both to this year's festival. Hi-Yu desperately needs your help in order to survive. You may feel you have nothing to contribute, but I guarantee that whatever you can offer (lending a hand to help build the float, helping to plan events, working at the Pirates Landing, selling buttons at the Street Festival, etc.) would be very much appreciated. General Membership meetings are held all through the year at 7:15 p.m. at the West Seattle Senior Center. Call the Hi-Yu Info Line at (206) 932-3345 for up-to-date information, or to leave a message. On the back of this booklet you can find application forms for 1999-2000 membership. If you wonder what you get out of your contribution to Hi-Yu, just look around at the smiles on the children's faces as they participate in these family events and think about the message of a caring community these activities send to them.
