2003 Souvenir Button

The 2003 Summer Festival Button Design was chosen from a number of submittals to our annual contest. Suzi Wiggins sketched the winning design (seen above), portraying some playful monkeys and an elephant. If you would like to try your hand at designing next year’s festival button or want to give suggestions for the 2004 festival theme, float design, or event ideas, visit our website at www.hiyu.com or call us at (206) 932-3345.

2003 Hi-Yu Community Float The theme of the 2003 Hi-Yu float is “Jungle Boogie”. Float chairman, Tim Winston, and a band of assemblers worked diligently to bring the design to life. After some initial tough times, the float finally came together to make its debut in the Everett Salty Sea Days parade. The float features the senior court standing in front of a bubbling waterfall with a flock of parrots overlooking the jungle scene. The front of the float holds the junior court surrounded by jungle flora, while a rockin’ primate DJ spins some tunes at the Jungle DJ station. The float, along with our junior and senior courts, represent our community in many Puget Sound area parades from Sequim to Issaquah. This would not be possible without the dedication of many volunteers. Consider giving to your community with your time, talents and ideas during this next year.

I invite all of West Seattle to participate in the festivities and I look forward to meeting many of you in the weeks to come. Feel free to come on up and shout out a big “Hi-Yu”! 2003 SEAFAIR Pirates Landing at Alki Beach Saturday, July 5th 2003 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM Alki Beach Promenade The Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates will once again lay siege to our fair West Seattle community when they storm the beach at the annual West Seattle Hi-Yu Pirate’s Landing at Alki. They will arrive on Alki to pillage and plunder during the Hi-Yu Summer Festival and “Kick-Off” the annual Seattle SEAFAIR events. The action-packed day starts at 11:00 AM and will offer family fun and entertainment until 5:00 PM. Stage shows featuring local bands will entertain throughout the day. “Miles From Chicago”, a rhythm & Blues Band that wowed everyone last year will again headline the afternoon this year. Back also is the “Swashbuckler Beach Vault”, a US Track & Field sanctioned NW Regional Championship Pole Vaulting competition sponsored by the Willamette Strider’s Track Club. Vintage Chevrolet Corvettes from the Tacoma Classical Glass Corvette Club will be on display. SEAFAIR and West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and this year’s candidates will make an appearance. Kids will love participating in the Pirates look-alike contest sponsored by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, with great prizes. Enjoy the food provided by different vendors as you stroll the Alki promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach. Lest we not forget the main event, The Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates! The excitement builds as the time for the landing approaches. While the tide dictates the actual landing time, around noon, when you see the “Yankee Clipper” Sea Scout Sailing Vessel sailing near by and its cannons banging away during the “battle”, you know the pirates are very close. The Seafair Pirates will hit the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army Reserve. Captain Kidd will be leading the pirates in their landing on the beach at Alki, to officially start this summer’s SEAFAIR celebrations and to take over the city. They’ll have some chests of treasure and plunder to share with their little pirate mateys, too. This year should be spectacular. Remembering what has happened in past years, what fiendish tricks could the Pirates have up their sleeve for this special event? Come join us for a great day at the beach! For more information, please call the West Seattle Hi-Yu information line at (206)932-3345 or check out our Website at www.hiyu.com.

West Seattle Sportsman’s Club The West Seattle Sportsman’s Club was founded in 1934 with the purpose of promoting the safe and responsible enjoyment of outdoor activities, conservation of our natural resources, and protection and restoration of our environment and wildlife. Every year the club sponsors boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 to attend the Washington State Junior Conservation Camp on Orcas Island, where they learn survival skills, fly tying and fishing techniques, current environmental issues, and have a lot of fun. The club also operates the Roger Dahl Rifle Range at the West Seattle Stadium. Its goal is to promote the safe and proper use and care of firearms for hunting and marksmanship. The range holds Hunter Education as well as Rifle Marksmanship classes and participates in rifle and pistol leagues including 4 Junior League matches each year. The range has seen at least one of its members go on to shoot in competition at the 1982 Summer Olympic Games. Regular events include fishing outings, Clam Bakes, Salmon Bakes, the Kid’s Fishing Derby, and more. For more information, please contact Jerry Mascio at 937-3614.

Kids Fishing Derby It’s early Sunday morning. The city is still quiet. Birds are singing and the fish are hungry. It’s the perfect time to fish! On Sunday, July 13th, be prepared to be awakened by your young, enthusiastic anglers for the annual Kids’ Fishing Derby down at Seacrest Marina on Harbor Avenue. Fishing and festivities begin at 8:00am and continue until 12:00 noon, when the prizes and ice cream are bestowed upon the children by the 2002 West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and 2003 Miss Hi-Yu Candidates. Best of all, it’s absolutely free! Everyone is welcome to fish in the trout pond and poles will be provided. More experienced fishermen may desire to attempt to fish off the pier, and a limited number of poles will be available for pier fishing. The fishing derby is open to all kids 13 and under with adult supervision. So get your kids, your neighbor’s kids (hey what a great activity for kids’ clubs!) and prepare to join in the fishing fun! West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade On Saturday, July 19th, at 11:00 AM, the American Legion Post #160 will begin the annual West Seattle Parade along California Avenue, starting at Admiral Way and continuing south for 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmonds Street. Some highlights of the parade will include the SEAFAIR Pirates, All City Marching Band (made up of students from all over the Seattle School District), The Lake City Vigilantes, and the SEAFAIR Princesses, who are vying for the title of Miss SEAFAIR 2004 -- not to mention the 2003 West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival Float and Royalty! The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard in the past months taking your Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities from around the Puget Sound area. Keep buying those Hi-Yu buttons in order to continue making our festival float a reality! The West Seattle Parade was started by the American Legion Post #160 in 1934 by Post Commander Orville Rummel. He was also instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu Association, and in 1984 he created an annual award that is given to a community member each year for outstanding community service. Sadly, Orville has now passed away, but the legacy he has created will live on for generations to come. Be sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award winner at the beginning of the parade!

West Seattle High School Alumni Association The renovation of West Seattle High School went right on schedule and opened this past September. The West Seattle High School Foundation was formed to raise extra funds for such things as a science greenhouse, school-wide computer network, lighting, sound, rigging, and curtains for the auditorium, artwork, repointing of the outside brickwork, and more. Check the Foundation website at www.wshsfoundation.org or call Shirley Tupper at (206) 933-0551. The new West Seattle High School campus opened in September 2002. In 2001, the Alumni Association gave over $37,000 in scholarships, some to students who have been successful in pursuing further education and of course some to graduating seniors from West Seattle High School. In 2002, they gave about $50,000 in scholarships to 19 students: 5 to graduating seniors and 14 to ongoing students. Five of these ongoing students recently graduated from college and have had their tuition paid through this scholarship for a full four years. The Alumni Association is still looking for any unwanted yearbooks. Call Betty Marks Broughton at (206) 9326583 if you find one you would like to donate. If you attended West Seattle High and are not receiving the Alumni Edition of the Chinook, that means the Association does not have your address. You can contact Membership Chairman Chris King at (206) 938-1937 or [email protected]. The paper goes out to anyone whose addresses we have. If you know of Chinooks being delivered to people no longer at the address or who are now deceased, please let Chris know.

This year they continue to sponsor community meals with the help of the West Seattle Help-Line, help at the Hiawatha Community Center Halloween Carnival, serve as ushers at the Easter Sunrise Service at Forest Lawn, fill backpacks with school items for homeless children through “Project Kool”, and assist on several other projects. Over the past ten years, through the proceeds of an annual auction, the club has created and endowed a scholarship at South Seattle Community College and has made major contributions to the music, library, and computer technology programs at West Seattle, Seattle Lutheran, and Chief Sealth High Schools on a rotating basis. This year they sponsored the second annual Golf Tournament and Raffle to benefit all the Schools in West Seattle. The first Saturday in December they will hold their 55th annual Community Pancake Breakfast. The West Seattle Kiwanis Club is an institutional member of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Hi-Yu Summer Festival and continues to support and work with West Seattle Business Improvement Association, schools, organizations, and social services on an as-needed basis. They are supporters of Kiwanis International’s worldwide effort to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) with the help of UNICEF. The introduction of Iodine into our salt supply has all but eliminated IDD in the USA, but in some countries the lack of Iodine in their diet causes mental and physical defects in newborns and the prevalence of thyroid disorders such as goiters. More information on this and other Kiwanis International projects can be found at www.kiwanis.org. Service Projects are determined by its membership, so if you would like to share your ideas and become involved, contact: Warren Lawless at (206) 938-8032, [email protected] http://kiwanis.westseattle.com

Murals of West Seattle -- In all, 11 historical murals in and around the main West Seattle business districts celebrate West Seattle’s heritage. In 1992 the projects won a national Neighborhood of the Year Award from Neighborhoods USA, a national non-profit organization committed to building and strengthening neighborhood organizations. By utilizing individual gifts and talents, the community worked together to create lasting images of Seattle’s past. Seven of the 11 murals are seen on these pages, the remaining four are as follows: “Mosquito Boat Landing” -- Artist: Susan Tooke, Halifax, Nova Scotia -- Location: Alleyway on Alaska - between California & 42nd; “Morgan Street Market” -- Artist: Bruce Rickett, Nova Scotia -- Location: 6501 California Ave SW - West Wall; “Alki in the Twenties” -- Artist: Bruce Rickett, Nova Scotia -- Location: 4755 Fauntleroy Way SW - East Wall on Fauntleroy; “The Old Mud Hole” -- Artist: Mike Svob, Coquitlam, B.C. -- Location: 4520 44th Ave SW - North Wall. “Press Day” (Left) - Activity grows hectic on the day a weekly newspaper is “put to bed”. Such was the case at the West Seattle Herald in the years prior to World War II, shown in this scene. You can almost hear the web-fed Duplex press grinding out the first section and the clattering linotypes converting molten lead to news and advertising type. Other printers assembled pages in “chases” on the “stones” for the second section. Computerized production has closed this chapter of newspaper production, but not “Press Day”. (Artist: Alan Wylie, Fort Langley, B.C. -- Location: 4727 44th Ave SW - North Wall)

“Tuesday’s Bank Day” (Right) - Anyone whose recollections date back to school days in the ‘20’s remembers “Bank Day”. This scene faithfully depicts a 1923 classroom as students line up to make deposits in personal savings accounts. The thrift concept originating with “Bank Day” has influenced educational and retirement savings plans up to the present day. The teacher, Miss Chillberg, left a valuable imprint on the lives of thousands of local childen. (Artist: Alan Wylie, Fort Langley, B.C. -- Location: 4501 California Ave SW - North Wall) “The Junction” (Below) - A grandly painted, stylized glimpse of the business area in 1918, which grew up at the point where street cars of the West Seattle line branched north and the Fauntleroy line headed south along California Avenue; both arriving from downtown Seattle via the Spokane Street trestle. Notable is the two-story. brick Campbell Building, still a Junction landmark, built in 1918. (Artist: Eric Grohe, Seattle, WA -- Location: 4747 California Ave SW - South Wall)

“Midnight Call” (Left) - An old photograph provided the specifics for this scene of a horsedrawn fire rig leaving the Junction Station at 44th Ave SW and SW Alaska St. Also housed in the station was a police precinct and public restrooms. Motorized fire engines replaced Hose Company #32 in 1924 and provided fire protection until moving to 38th and Alaska in 1964. After remaining vacant for a few years, the station was razed in 1968 and remains a free parking lot for Junction shoppers. (Artist: Don Barrie, Seattle, WA -Location: 4711 44th Ave SW - South Wall)

“The Hi-Yu Parade” (Right) Selected to represent over half a century of Western Washington’s oldest continuous summer celebration, this scene features the Hi-Yu float of 1973. “The Wizard of Oz”, which won top awards in parades across the state, proceeds south past the Post Office in the annual American Legion Grande Parade. Nearly every person in the scene attended the dedication ceremony, except Toto, the dog. (Artist: Lanny Little, Gresham, OR -- Location: 4412 California Ave SW - West Seattle Post Office) “West Seattle Ferries” (Left) The first two ferries on Puget Sound were on the eight minute run between Downtown Seattle and the Duwamish Head in West Seattle during the years of 1888 to 1921. The ferries connected to a cable car system that carried passengers up the hill (now known as Ferry Street in North Admiral) to the developing Admiral District. The horse and buggy were the “taxis” serving the ferry and nearby Luna Amusement Park. (Artist: Bill Garnett, Portland, OR -- 4707 California Ave. SW - in Alley) “The First Duwamish Bridge” (Right) - Viewed from Pigeon Point on the west side of the Duwamish River, the mural captures a sweeping view of the first bridge to West Seattle, built around 1910. The vast tidelands shown, were drained and filled to create Harbor Island. Looking east, the panoramic scene taken from and actual photograph, shows the Cascade Mountains, Beacon Hill, and the young city of Seattle. (Artist: Robert Dafford, Lafayette, LA -- Location: 4730 44th Ave SW - North Wall)

Walker Rock Garden The Walker Rock Garden is a showpiece of inspired whimsy, and a terrific illustration of the principle that anyone can become an artist. It was built by Milton Walker and his wife Florence in the back yard of their West Seattle home during off-hours between 1958 and 1980. Creating the garden gradually became an obsession with Milton, an untutored genius whose baroque and colorful creations soon filled most of his property, situated on a green hillside overlooking Puget Sound. Milton Walker cut and fitted virtually all these stones himself. He loved the textures and colors of rock, and devoted his spare time to presenting them in novel and contrasting ways. The garden grew like topsy, with never a plan committed to paper; its unifying theme was the beautiful patterns revealed in the stones, and the playful arrangement of building materials into intricate patterns. These materials--many-hued agate, rough cobblestones, big chunks of translucent rose quartz, eroded sandstone, rough bubbly magma, glossy black obsidian, fragments of colored glass and tile--are handsomely set off. Lush plantings, a shady patio, and the splashing fountain in the center, together orchestrate a restful mood in the midst of busy and complex layers of stonework. The garden, located in the back yard of the Walkers’ private home, is maintained to a superb standard. The public may visit this West Seattle wonderland during the summer season, by appointment only. To set up an appointment, call (206) 935-3036. The Walker Rock Garden 5407 37th SW Seattle, WA 98126 (206) 935-3036

Alki Community The Alki Monument In 1851, Alki Point was a flat, sandy spot which extended a half mile into Puget Sound from hills to the east in west central King County. In November of 1851, the Denny Party landed there from the schooner Exact to form a settlement which later developed into the City of Seattle. Referred to as the birthplace of Seattle, this is the city’s Plymouth Rock. In fact, it has a piece of the historic rock in its base. The monument (which can be found at the intersection of Alki Avenue Southwest and 63rd Avenue Southwest) was given to the city in 1905 by Lenora Denny, daughter of Arthur Denny. The Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty, a seven foot replica of the original “Liberty Enlightening the World” in New York City, was a gift from Reginald H. Parsons and the Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 1952. It is located at the beach in the 2700 block of Alki Avenue Southwest. Vandals once stole Liberty’s torchbearing arm, but the missing appendage was returned and the 1950-vintage piece has been restored. Alki Point Lighthouse The first lighthouse was erected in 1887 on wood scaffolding. Rebuilt in 1910, the automated light can be seen for 15 miles. The lighthouse is located at 3201 Alki Ave SW and is open between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Tours are offered noon to 4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Reservations for special events at the lighthouse or tours can be made by calling the U.S. Coast Guard at 217-6120. Alki Bathhouse The Historic Alki Bathhouse was built in 1911 as a huge bathing and recreational pavilion. The building contained dressing rooms, locker facilities, a small theater, large promenade deck and a gymnasium. As many as 20,000 people would take the ferry to Alki to enjoy the frigid water and picnic near the beach. Over the years the Bathhouse has been used for many recreational activities. After W.W.II the building was demolished and a smaller facility was built. The new Bathhouse became an artist community that has been thriving for over 30 years. The Bathhouse pottery studio offers pottery classes for all ages. The painting studio continues to offer a place for the public to paint throughout week.

West Seattle Hi-Yu Membership Information The Hi-Yu Summer Festival was started in 1934 by merchants in West Seattle as a way to thank the community for their business. These merchants recognized that the success of their businesses depended on the community. Through the years the task of designing and constructing the West Seattle Community Float, planning and staffing the Hi-Yu events, raising funds to support these activities as well as the scholarships awarded to the Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen and Princesses has shifted to a group of community volunteers and a few stalwart service clubs. Hi-Yu still looks to businesses in West Seattle for the lion’s share of the necessary funds, as well as to local residents (through button sales and memberships). Hi-Yu would like to thank all of you - businesses, service clubs, and individuals - who have donated time, money or both to this year’s festival. Hi-Yu needs your help in order to survive. You may feel you have nothing to contribute, but we guarantee that whatever you can offer (lending a hand to help build the float, helping to plan events, working at the Pirates Landing, selling buttons at the Street Festival, etc.) would be very much appreciated. If you wonder what you get out of your contribution to Hi-Yu, just look around at the smiles on people’s faces as they participate in these community events and think about the message of a caring community these activities send to them. General Membership meetings are held all through the year at 7:00 pm at the West Seattle Senior Center. Call the Hi-Yu Info Line at (206) 932-3345 or check the website (www.hiyu.com) for up-to-date information, or to leave a message. On the back of this booklet you can find application forms for 2003-2004 membership. Individuals -- $20.00 Non-profit Organizations -- $30.00 Service Clubs -- $30.00 Candidate Sponsors -- $120.00 (plus membership) Business Membership Levels -- listed on back cover

A Little Hi-Yu History Kacey and the late Charlie Jung preserved a few mementos of their many years as active Hi-Yu devotees, which shed a little light on happier times in West Seattle. Twenty-seven years ago, the West Seattle Herald in it’s 50th Anniversary edition, acknowledged that Hi-Yu had also been around for fifty years. Jack Hanning wrote that in 1923, with World War I behind it and the Great Depression seven years away, West Seattle was going through a period of rapid expansion. The business and professional community thought it rightful that they thank their clients, patients, and customers appropriately for their patronage. What evolved was the first “All West Seattle Picnic.” The story doesn’t say where it was held, so we have to presume Lincoln Park was the site. In succeeding years, the event wore such titles as “Potlatch,” and “Mardi Gras.” The picnic, despite a one-year revival by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, succumbed to a combination of burgeoning red tape, mounting costs and disinterest and the years of celebrations which drew thousands to play games, enjoy entertainment and talent shows, the coronation of the Hi-Yu Courts and the drawing for a new car have faded into obscure history. In 1934 a contest was held to come up with a new name for the revived summer festival. The name that was chosen was “Hi-Yu” and that is why even though the celebrations and picnics preceded 1934, “Hi-Yu” itself is officially only sixty-nine years old. Looking back, it’s interesting to note that the first “Pirates” to land at Alki Beach (in about 1934), were Sea Scouts of the “Yankee Clipper” sponsored by the West Seattle Lions Club and skippered by Captain John Kelly. Even at the fiftieth celebration, the scouts, switching roles, manned their worthy craft to guard West Seattle from the real Seafair Pirates who annually invade Alki to kick off Hi-Yu. This tradition has survived generally intact. In the late 30’s an event was added to the program of Hi-Yu which attracted world-wide acclaim, a “heel-and-toe” race, commencing at the West Seattle YMCA and circling Lake Washington. Breaking into anything resembling a trot or running gait disqualified a competitor. Also popular during this same period were the boxing and wrestling matches held at Hiawatha Playfield. Still hooked on athleticism, the 1949 Picnic coincided with the official Northwest AAU swim meet at the new Colman Pool. It featured national-level swimming and diving championship events. In 1949 everyone in West Seattle was supposed to wear a red hat during the ten days of Hi-Yu. If you got caught without one, you could get hauled before a “Kangaroo Kort” run by Speed Winquist and presided over by Superior Court Judge William Long. In 1950 under the leadership of President Don Waller Hi-Yu became an official partner of Seafair which included Hi-Yu in its schedule of events. West Seattle’s American Legion Grand Parade included scores of floats and other entries which appeared in neighborhood parades in the surrounding Puget Sound area. During several subsequent years, Hi-Yu was coordinated by Ted Best (then Secretary of the West Seattle Commercial Club) of Ted Best Associates. Some of the Hi-Yu presidents in that era included Dick Kennedy, John Kaufman, and Arvid Andresen. When Ted Best was appointed to the City Council, Orville Rummell became Coordinator for a brief period and headquartered Hi-Yu in a second-floor space above Nielsen Florists at California and Oregon. Ted Best renamed his firm West Seattle Associates. During the term of Leon Wagner in 1967, a group headed by Doris Richards and Warren Lawless left the ad department of the West Seattle Herald to buy West Seattle Associates. They were hired to run Hi-Yu for the next seven years. In addition to Wagner, presidents during those years included Jack Hanning and Bob Grieve. The premier event throughout all the years of Hi-Yu is the Grand Parade, then, now, and hopefully always, a project of West Seattle American Legion Post 160. The parade actually preceded Hi-Yu by a few years. Bob Grieve was perennial chairman, and directed the event from a meter-maid vehicle which traversed the parade route many times as the parade proceeded south on California Avenue from Admiral Way to the Junction. A couple of sections of bleacher which seated dignitaries were placed in front of Van Gilder’s and later Perry’s Furniture Store and parade entries were announced as they approached. The 1973 official Hi-Yu Parade Float, designed by Moe Beerman, won significant acclaim and still remains emblazoned on the exterior of the West Seattle Post Office as one of the “Murals of West Seattle.” The 56-foot float, “Magical Moments in the Land of Oz,” depicts the famous “yellow-brick road” inhabited by “Dorothy’s” friends the “Cowardly Lion,” the “Tin Man” and others and also introduced parade goers to Hi-Yu Queen Julie Basket and Princesses Kathie Dempsey and Sandra Selle. Hi-Yu would like to thank Warren Lawless (who refuses to guarantee the accuracy) for his help in compiling this interesting Hi-Yu trivia. Hi-Yu invites any resident of West Seattle who has a collection of photos, clippings and other memorabilia of past Hi-Yu festivals to consider contributing them to Hi-Yu with the hope that they could be archived in a permanent Hi-Yu collection at the SWSHS Log House Museum. Hi-Yu deserves a place in West Seattle history. Please contact the Hi-Yu Info line at (206) 932-3345.
