2001 Souvenir Button

2001 Hi-Yu Community Float West Seattle Hi-Yu celebrates a Storybook Summer as the theme for the 2001 Summer Festival. The parade float for this summer is graced with your West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty. Senior Court Queen Jill Cook stands at the entrance to the magical castle along with her frog prince. On either side of the drawbridge are the lovely Princesses Sabrina Hursh and Natalie Wiggins who survey the storybook wonderland of giant mushrooms, magnificent flowers, unicorns, and charming fairies played by the junior court, Queen Marisa Valencia, and Princesses Tannah Hilf and Alexa Malaspino.

The “Storybook Summer” button was designed by Jill Cook, the current West Seattle Hi-Yu Senior Court Queen, with the help of artist Kristina Mack. It features a fairytale castle rising out of a storybook. Flags on the turrets flutter in the wind as stars dance around the castle, imparting a magical quality on the scene. In keeping with the volunteer nature of Hi-Yu, Glen Blue of Olympus Press donated the printing of the buttons, which were then cut and assembled by volunteers Barbara and Jim Edwards and their family. Look for the buttons at all Hi-Yu events and activities. For only one dollar you can help support the West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival events. Just ask any Miss Hi-Yu candidate or current Miss Hi-Yu Royalty. They will also be available at many junction businesses and at the Hi-Yu booth during the annual Merchant’s Sidewalk Sale & Street Festival held in the Alaska Junction July 12-15th. Check out our website (www.hiyu.com) for information on how you can design and submit an entry for the 2002 Hi-Yu Summer Festival button. Contributions are also welcomed for theme ideas and float design proposals.

The parade float and royalty have had a busy spring and summer representing the West Seattle Community in Tacoma, Sequim, Port Townsend, Marysville, and Port Orchard and are looking forward presentations in the West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade July 21st, the Seafair Torchlight Parade July 28th, the Lake City Parade August 4th, and the Issaquah Salmon Days Festival Parade on the 6th of October. Every year in January Hi-Yu begins developing the theme and float plans for the coming year. Many hours of volunteer work and creativity are spent on the successful creation of this float, which is our emissary to neighboring communities. We would like to thank all of the support and efforts of this year’s crew, with special thanks to the Karl & Fran Coy family, Jerry & Lorrie Cook family, Gary and Suzi Wiggins family, and Mike and Karen Palmquist.

A special Thank-You to the Businesses who provided special help and funds for the float this year: Wells Fargo Bank, Wilson WindowWare, and Birmingham Steel We are proud of our community float and hope you will be as well. To volunteer on the float or in a variety of other areas, please sign up on our web site at www.hiyu.com or call Mike Palmquist (206) 764-9150 and come enjoy the fun. Everyone is welcome! 2001 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Senior Court Royalty First Princess - Sabrina Hursh Hello, I’m Sabrina Hursh, your 2001 West Seattle Hi-Yu First Princess. I graduated from West Seattle High School in 2000 and I will be a sophomore at Western Washington University this fall. I am working on a Chinese minor with an interest in a business major to pursue a career in international business. I am also interested in Law. Thanks to many individuals I will be able to experience the honor of representing the West Seattle community this summer. First I would like to thank all of the Hi-Yu volunteers for everything! They have and continue to put enormous amounts of time and effort into Hi-Yu and into the community. Stevie, I can’t thank you enough for all of your support. I would also like to thank my Gramps for the rides, Parents for their love, and my friends for their support. These wonderful people are the ones who have made this opportunity possible. Thank you. I am currently a member of Western’s Hip-Hop Dance Team, Vice President of my residence hall, and am playing intramural softball all while maintaining a 3.2 GPA. I am very excited about the upcoming summer and hope to see all of you during the Hi-Yu Festival.

Queen - Jill Cook

Second Princess - Natalie Wiggins

Greetings West Seattle! My name is Jill Cook and I am your 2001 West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen. I just recently graduated from Seattle Pacific University where I earned my BA in Biology. This coming year I plan to work at Children’s Hospital to gain experience as I prepare to attend medical school. I would eventually like to become a physician and work with children, perhaps as a neurosurgeon.

Hello my name is Natalie Wiggins and I am the Second Princess for West Seattle Hi-Yu. Ever since 1987 when I was the First Princess for the junior court, I have been involved with Hi-Yu; dancing numerous times for their events and helping with their advertisement. Now that I am currently a princess my role as a Hi-Yu participant has gotten bigger and better.

This summer is quite a busy one for me, as I am participating in the Hi-Yu summer festival as well as representing West Seattle in the Miss SEAFAIR competition. In addition to these activities, I am continuing in my ninth year as a volunteer counselor at Kiwanis Camp Casey, an overnight summer camp for physically handicapped children. I am also currently employed at Digital Possibilities, Inc. (www.dpzone.com) where I handle customer service. This summer I have had the opportunity to travel to parades and community festivals around Western Washington and I am excited that our own festival is now underway! I hope that as you make summer plans, you’ll include some Hi-Yu events in your schedule... there’s the Pirates Landing, Bowling Tournament, Concert in the Park, and Miss Hi-Yu Coronation, just to name a few! Finally, I want to say a huge thank you to my amazing family and friends - without you guys I wouldn’t be who I am (or where I am) today!

This year I have been involved with visiting other cities, showing off our wonderful float, and working on this year’s souvenir book. Outside of Hi-Yu, I have just completed my first year at Shoreline Community College where I plan to earn my AA. After that, I then plan to extend my studies at either the UW or at a college in Boston where I can major in education and minor in communication. As for now, I am an Assistant Director at Hiawatha Community Center where I am involved with their summer camp working with children from ages four to eight. Being involved with Hi-Yu, I hope to see many of your faces at several of our events and I want to thank my family and friends for being so helpful through this past year.

The pageant process includes completion of an application, a candidate interview the morning of the pageant, and then attending the coronation at the Fun Festival. Judging is based on personality, friendliness, and an enthusiasm for Hi-Yu. The pageant is open to West Seattle girls, 6 to 10 years of age. Applications are available at: Hiawatha Community Center Alki Community Center Southwest Community Center West Seattle YMCA West Seattle Public Library Call the Hi-Yu Information Line at (206) 932-3345 for more information. You and your family are invited to enjoy the recreation activities at Hiawatha. 2001 SEAFAIR Pirates Landing at Alki Beach

Junior Pirates Take Heed! Ahoy mates! All you pirate wannabes. Imagine yourself joining the Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates for a little swashbuckling fun on Alki beach July 7th. Dress up in your favorite pirate costume and show up on Alki beach between noon and 1 PM on July 7th to register at the West Seattle Kiwanis booth located near the bathhouse.

Saturday, July 7th, 11 AM to 5 PM The Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates will once again lay siege to our fair West Seattle community when they storm the beach at the annual West Seattle Hi-Yu Pirate’s Landing at Alki Beach. They will arrive on Alki to pillage and plunder during the Hi-Yu Summer Festival and “KickOff” the annual Seattle SEAFAIR events. The action-packed day starts at 11:00 AM and will offer family fun and entertainment until 5:00 PM. Stage shows featuring local bands will entertain throughout the day. “Miles From Chicago”, a rhythm & Blues Band that wowed the crowds last year, will again headline the afternoon this year. Back also is the “Swashbuckler Beach Vault”, a US Track & Field sanctioned NW Regional Championship Pole Vaulting competition sponsored by the Willamette Strider’s Track Club. Vintage Chevrolet Corvettes from the Tacoma Classical Glass Corvette Club will be on display. SEAFAIR and West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and this year’s candidates will make also an appearance. Kids will love participating in the Pirate Look-Alike contest sponsored by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, with great prizes. Enjoy the food provided by the various vendors as you stroll the Alki promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach. Lest we not forget the main event, the Seattle SEAFAIR Pirates! The excitement builds as the time for the landing approaches. While the tide dictates the actual landing time, around noon, when you see the “Yankee Clipper” Sea Scout Sailing Vessel sailing near by and its cannons banging away during the “battle”, you’ll know the pirates are very close. The SEAFAIR Pirates will “hit” the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army Reserve. This year should be spectacular, and remembering what has happened in past years, what fiendish tricks will the Pirates have up their sleeve for this special event? Come join us for a great day at the beach! For more information, please call the West Seattle Hi-Yu information line at (206)932-3345 or visit www.hiyu.com.

The Seattle SWAFAIR Pirates will land sometime between noon and 1pm (depending on the tide) and judging will be shortly after landing. There will be treats for all and the lucky grand prize winner will receive a spectacular prize. This event is open to kids and Junior Pirates of all ages (1 to 99+). Miles From Chicago This band knows how to have fun! Comprised of five seasoned musicians from the Seattle area, they play a variety of eclectic energetic blues, soul, R&B and cool tunes that make you want to dance. The band performs regularly at many places around the Northwest, including several night-clubs, festivals and parties. This summer’s outdoor appearances include the Hi-Yu Festival in West Seattle, the IKEA Renton River Days Festival, the Kalama Community Fair, the Shoreline Arts Summer Concert Series, the Taste of Tacoma, and the Lake Associates Recreational Club Summer Music Festival. The band’s lineup includes Miles on bass and vocals, Tom Brighton on guitars and vocals, Tom Morrison on keyboards, and some of Seattle’s most gifted drummers and sax players. These guys really know how to lay down a beat and belch out music that is danceable and fun. Various local or touring talents often sit in with the band on guitar, horns, or harmonica. The stage show is also enjoyable for those who just like to listen or watch with some friendly, smilin’ faces.

“Art of Gardening” West Seattle Garden Tour The seventh annual West Seattle Garden Tour will be held on Sunday July 22 from 9am-5pm. The West Seattle Garden Tour invites you to spend a day visiting and enjoying some of West Seattle’s signature residential gardens and enjoy the entertaining insights of local garden expert Ciscoe Morris. Participating gardeners have graciously opened their gardens for public tour to benefit the West Seattle community in developing the arts, open space, and horticulture education. We are excited to donate this year’s proceeds to ArtsWest, Denny Middle School’s Water Wise Garden Project and Roxhill Park (see descriptions below). Included in the admission to this year’s tour is a lecture by wellknown radio host and Master Gardener Ciscoe Morris. The lecture will be at the South Seattle Community College Arboretum from 12:00 noon to 1:00pm. There will be box lunches available for purchase at the lecture for your convenience on a limited first come first serve basis. Please enjoy this chance for a picnic on these lovely grounds. Morris is the host of KIRO radio’s “Gardening with Ciscoe” show, the Manager for Grounds and Landscaping at Seattle University, and a King County Master Gardener. He has been at Seattle University for nearly 20 years and has been a King County Master Gardener for almost as long. In addition, he is a certified arborist and is on several advisory boards including Plant Amnesty, The Seattle School District, and South Seattle Community College. He also teaches at Seattle

University, Edmonds Community College, the University of Washington, and the Center for Urban Horticulture. He has written numerous articles for various publications and is a member of the Arboretum Editorial Board. Denny Middle School has a “water wise” garden located on school grounds. This garden was installed over a two-year period starting in 1992. A student garden club works after school in the garden two days a week on various horticultural projects. Roxhill Park is a 13.5-acre site located between Westwood Village and SW Roxbury. This site restoration is a project of the Seattle Parks Department and community associations. The plan involves restoring the historical headwaters of Longfellow Creek, which was filled in years ago. Plans include wetland restoration, paths, bridges, and interpretive signs. ArtsWest is a volunteer-driven, non-profit arts organization producing programs in theatre, music, visual arts, and education/outreach. It is located in the Alaska Junction at 4711 California Ave SW. Kids Fishing Derby

West Seattle Sportsman’s Club

It’s early Sunday morning. The city is still quiet. Birds are singing and the fish are hungry. It’s the perfect time to fish! On Sunday, July 15th, be prepared to be awoken by your young, enthusiastic anglers for the annual Kids’ Fishing Derby down at Seacrest Marina on Harbor Avenue. Fishing and festivities begin at 6:00am and continue until 10:00am, when the prizes and ice cream are bestowed upon the children by the 2001 West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and 2002 Candidates. Best of all, it’s absolutely free!

The West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club was founded in 1934 with the purpose of promoting the safe and responsible enjoyment of outdoor activities, conservation of our natural resources, and protection and restoration of our environment and wildlife. Every year the club sponsors boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 to attend the Washington State Junior Conservation Camp on Orcas Island, where they learn survival skills, fly tying and fishing techniques, current environmental issues, and have a lot of fun.

Everyone is welcome to fish in the trout pond and poles will be provided. More experienced fishermen may desire to attempt to fish off the pier, and a limited number of poles will be available for pier fishing. The fishing derby is open to all kids 13 and under with adult supervision. So get your kids, your neighbor’s kids (hey what a great activity for kids’ clubs!) and prepare to join in the fishing fun! Call Jerry Mascio (206) 937-3614, for more information.

The club also operates the Roger Dahl Rifle Range at the West Seattle Stadium. Its goal is to promote the safe and proper use and care of firearms for hunting and marksmanship. The range holds Hunter Education as well as Rifle Marksmanship classes and participates in rifle and pistol leagues including 4 Junior League matches each year. The range has seen at least one of its members go on to shoot in competition at the 1982 Summer Olympic Games. The club meets on the first Wednesday of every month at the Admiral Benbow Inn. Regular events include fishing outings, Clam Bakes, Salmon Bakes, the Kid’s Fishing Derby, and more. For more information, please contact Jerry Mascio at 937-3614.

Concert in the Park

Featuring the West Seattle Big Band Bring your picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs, and settle in for the awesome sounds that can only come from a big band. Weather permitting, on Tuesday July 17th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, the West Seattle Big Band will perform some of your favorite Swing Era music along with a mix of Jazz and Blues including Vocals. This will take place on a stage set up on the East Lawn, behind the Hiawatha Field House. Now entering their sixth year of existence, the West Seattle Big Band is riding the resurgence of swing music into the new millennium, while providing the West Seattle area with a community based big band we can call our own. They perform at functions and events throughout the Seattle Metro area, as well as continuing to support the performing arts in West Seattle area schools. The West Seattle Big Band was formed in the Spring of 1996 to promote the performing arts at West Seattle High School. At that time the band was made up entirely of alumni from West Seattle. Since then about half of the original alumni have stayed on and other alumni have joined, along with community members who have helped to fill out the ranks. The Band continues to support music education in the schools, by performing at fund raising concerts, benefits and auctions. The band also sets aside half it’s earnings for distribution to area schools. The band is an eighteen piece big band, playing swing favorites from the libraries of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glen Miller, and Benny Goodman, along with numerous jazz favorites from Maynard Ferguson, Charlie Parker, Stan Kenton and Charles Mingus, just to name a few. The band also has a couple of vocalists, male and female, singing favorites from the swing era. The West Seattle Alumni in the band range from the class of 1964 to 1986. The Director is Donn Weaver, retired music teacher from West Seattle High School.

If you are interested in booking this band, or for more information, you can contact Jim Edwards at (206) 932-9571.

West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade On Saturday, July 21st, at 11:00 AM, the American Legion Post #160 will begin the annual West Seattle Parade along California Avenue, starting at Admiral Way and continuing south for 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmonds Street. Some highlights of the parade will include the Seafair Pirates, All City Marching Band (made up of students from all over the Seattle School District), The Lake City Vigilantes, and the Seafair Princesses, who are vying for the title of Miss Seafair 2002. We anticipate having the King County Police Honor Guard to lead the parade. The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard the past two months taking your Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities, including Tacoma’s Daffodil Festival float, the Seafair float, and the Port Orchard Fathoms of Fun float. Keep buying those Hi-Yu buttons! The West Seattle Parade was started by the American Legion Post #160 in 1934 by Post Commander Orville Rummel. He was also instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu Association, and in 1984 he created an annual award that is given to a community member each year for outstanding community service. Sadly, Orville has now passed away, but the legacy he has created will live on for generations to come. Be sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award winner at the beginning of the parade.

West Seattle High School Alumni Association

West Seattle Junction Association

The renovation of West Seattle High School has begun. Students are attending classes in the former Louisa Boren Junior High School buildings and they have a new principal - Mr. Phil Brockman.

The West Seattle Junction is the warmest and friendliest place in Seattle to shop, browse, or stroll and you’ll find most things you’re looking for. Nearly 300 businesses are eager to meet your shopping and professional needs. The Junction is Seattle’s best kept small town secret located in the heart of West Seattle where California Avenue meets Alaska Street. Enjoy our award winning historic murals or dine at our world of restaurants. There’s plenty of free parking in the Junction and it’s a lot easier on your nerves than the mall.

The West Seattle High School Foundation has been formed to raise extra funds for such things as a science greenhouse, schoolwide computer network, lighting, sound, rigging, and curtains for the auditorium, artwork, repointing of the outside brickwork, and more. Your generosity will help to make West Seattle High a world-class facility. Check the Foundation website at www.wshsfoundation.org or call Shirley Tupper at (206) 933-0551. The new West Seattle High School campus is scheduled to open in September 2002. In 2000, the Alumni Association gave over $24,000 in scholarships to eleven students -- six to graduating seniors and five others to 1999 recipients who reapplied. This is the first time the association has given scholarships to first-year winners who haved proved themselves. This year they expect to give over $30,000 in scholarships -- some to first and second year recipients who have been successful in pursuing further education, and of course some to graduating seniors from West Seattle High School. The scholarships now cover a full year tuition at any Washington public school or partial tuition at a private institution. The Alumni Association is still looking for any unwanted yearbooks. Call Betty Marks Broughton at (206) 932-6583 if you find one you would like to donate. If you attended West Seattle High and are not receiving the Alumni Edition of the Chinook, that means the Association does not have you address. You can contact Membership Chairman Chris King at (206) 938-1937 or [email protected]. The paper goes out to anyone whose addresses we have. If you know of Chinooks being delivered to people no longer at the address or who are now deceased, please let Chris know. (Below) Artist rendering of the new West Seattle High School campus.

Lions Club of West Seattle The Lions Club of West Seattle has been serving the West Seattle Community since 1929. It is a charter member of Lions International and meet each Thursday noon at the Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW). Like all Lions Clubs, the emphasis is on service in all forms to less fortunate members of the community. In addition, the club supports SIGHTFIRST, a program of Lions International, which is the world’s largest blindness prevention program. One of the oldest projects for the WS Lions is sponsorship of the Sea Scout Explorer Unit in West Seattle and the Yankee Clipper. Another project is a Scholarship program for graduating high school students from West Seattle. Over the past ten years, through the proceeds of an annual auction, the club has created and endowed a scholarship at South Seattle Com. College and has made major contributions to the music, library and computer technology programs at West Seattle, Seattle Lutheran and Chief Sealth High Schools on a rotating basis. This year we sponsored our first Annual Golf Tournament and Raffle for all the Schools in West Seattle. The first Saturday in December we hold our 54th annual Community Pancake Breakfast. The WS Kiwanis Club is an institutional member of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the Hi-Yu Summer Festival and continues to support and work with West Seattle Business Improvement Association, schools, organizations, and social services on as-needed basis. We are supporters of Kiwanis International’s worldwide effort to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) with the help of UNISEF. The introduction of Iodine into our salt supply has all but eliminated IDD in the USA, but in some countries the lack of Iodine in their diet causes mental and physical defects in newborns and the prevalence of thyroid disorders such as goiters. www.kiwanis.org Service Projects are determined by its membership, so if you would like to share your ideas and become involved, contact: Warren Lawless at (206) 938-8032, [email protected] or Karl Sutter at [email protected] --- http:// kiwanis.westseattle.com

Log House Museum - Birthplace of Seattle Location: 3003 - 61st Ave SW (one block south of the Statue of Liberty on Alki Beach in West Seattle) Hours:

Thursday - 12:00-6:00 PM Friday - 10:00 AM-3:00 PM Saturday & Sunday - 12:00-3:00 PM

The Birthplace of Seattle / Log House Museum has been open since November 13, 1997 (the 146th anniversary of the landing of the Denny party at Alki Beach) and is located in an authentically renovated turn-of-the-century log structure on Alki Point. This structure was once the carriage house of the “Fir Lodge” estate, one of Alki’s first year-round homes built by prominent Seattlites William and Gladys Bernard. The current exhibit is “The Spirit Returns”, which tells the story of the Alki Picnics and of their interaction with the Native American Duwamish Indians of this area. It tells of the beginning of a great city and a culture struggling to keep its identity. Speaker programs are held every month (2nd Thursday at 7:15 PM) and have included a wide range of historical and entertaining topics such as Luna Park, carousels, pioneer cooking, and western Washington architecture, as well as native American storytellers. On July 12th, Looking Back at Hi-Yu and the Seafair Pirates annual landing at Alki Beach will be presented. The museum has become a heritage educational tour destination for school groups and other special interest groups. Other heritage education opportunities available to area schools include traveling heritage trunks and resource libraries, school assembly programs; and a “teen docent” program, which is funded by King County Resources. With the acquisition and preservation of the Log House Museum, the South West Seattle Historical Society now has a home to help fulfill its mission to preserve, interpret, and communicate the heritage of the Duwamish Peninsula and Seattle. The SWSHS is currently in the second major Oral History and Memory book projects, which preserve the precious

personal and family memories of selected community elders through professional audio, video interviews, and personal memoirs. A summary of “highlight” videos produced will be featured in the museum’s on-site library wan will be unveiled the last week in July. The Memory Book Project is funded by the Department of Neighborhoods and is also an effort to collect and safeguard the first-hand remembrances of early West Seattle through written stories. If you know of anyone who should be contacted to participate in the Second Memory Book that is now being developed, please contact the museum. It will not only focus on businesses which evoke fond memories but exist no longer, but also businesses that continue to contribute much to West Seattle commerce and community. Make plans soon to visit the Log House Museum, its gift shop, and the commemorative courtyard. People interested in becoming museum docents, special project volunteers, or SWSHS members are encouraged to call Director, Pat Filer at (206) 938-5293.

A Little Hi-Yu History Kacey and the late Charlie Jung preserved a few mementos of their many years as active Hi-Yu devotees, which shed a little light on happier times in West Seattle. Twenty-six years ago, the West Seattle Herald in it’s 50th Anniversary edition, acknowledged that Hi-Yu had also been around for fifty years. Hanning wrote that in 1923, with World War I behind it and the Great Depression seven years away, West Seattle was going through a period of rapid expansion. The business and professional community thought it rightful that they thank their clients, patients, and customers appropriately for their patronage. What evolved was the first “All West Seattle Picnic.” The story doesn’t say where it was held, so we have to presume Lincoln Park was the site. In succeeding years, the event wore such titles as “Potlatch,” and “Mardi Gras.” The picnic, despite a one-year revival by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, succumbed to a combination of burgeoning red tape, mounting costs and disinterest and the years of celebrations which drew thousands to play games, enjoy entertainment and talent shows, the coronation of the Hi-Yu Courts and the drawing for a new car have faded into obscure history. In 1934 a contest was held to come up with a new name for the revived summer festival. The name that was chosen was “Hi-Yu” and that is why even though the celebrations and picnics preceded 1934, “Hi-Yu” itself is officially only sixty-eight years old. Looking back, it’s interesting to note that the first “Pirates” to land at Alki Beach (in about 1934), were Sea Scouts of the “Yankee Clipper” sponsored by the West Seattle Lions Club and skippered by Captain John Kelly. Even at the fiftieth celebration, the scouts, switching roles, manned their worthy craft to guard West Seattle from the real Seafair Pirates who annually invade Alki to kick off Hi-Yu. This tradition has survived generally intact. In the late 30’s an event was added to the program of Hi-Yu which attracted world-wide acclaim, a “heel-and-toe” race, commencing at the West Seattle YMCA and circling Lake Washington. Breaking into anything resembling a trot or running gait disqualified a competitor. Also popular during this same period were the boxing and wrestling matches held at Hiawatha Playfield. Still hooked on athleticism, the 1949 Picnic coincided with the official Northwest AAU swim meet at the new Colman Pool. It featured national-level swimming and diving championship events. In 1949 everyone in West Seattle was supposed to wear a red hat during the ten days of Hi-Yu. If you got caught without one, you could get hauled before a “Kangaroo Kort” run by Speed Winquist and presided over by Superior Court Judge William Long. In 1950 under the leadership of President Don Waller Hi-Yu became an official partner of Seafair which included Hi-Yu in its schedule of events. West Seattle’s American Legion Grand Parade included scores of floats and other entries which appeared in neighborhood parades in the surrounding Puget Sound area. During several subsequent years, Hi-Yu was coordinated by Ted Best (then Secretary of the West Seattle Commercial Club) of Ted Best Associates. Some of the Hi-Yu presidents in that era included Dick Kennedy, John Kaufman, and Arvid Andresen. When Ted Best was appointed to the City Council, Orville Rummell became Coordinator for a brief period and headquartered

30

Hi-Yu in a second-floor space above Nielsen Florists at California and Oregon. Ted Best renamed his firm West Seattle Associates. During the term of Leon Wagner in 1967, a group headed by Doris Richards and Warren Lawless left the ad department of the West Seattle Herald to buy West Seattle Associates. They were hired to run Hi-Yu for the next seven years. In addition to Wagner, presidents during those years included Jack Hanning and Bob Grieve. The premier event throughout all the years of Hi-Yu is the Grand Parade, then, now, and hopefully always, a project of West Seattle American Legion Post 160. The parade actually preceded Hi-Yu by a few years. Bob Grieve was perennial chairman, and directed the event from a meter-maid vehicle which traversed the parade route many times as the parade proceeded south on California Avenue from Admiral Way to the Junction. A couple of sections of bleacher which seated dignitaries were placed in front of Van Gilder’s and later Perry’s Furniture Store and parade entries were announced as they approached. The 1973 official Hi-Yu Parade Float, designed by Moe Beerman, won significant acclaim and still remains emblazoned on the exterior of the West Seattle Post Office as one of the “Murals of West Seattle.” The 56-foot float, “Magical Moments in the Land of Oz,” depicts the famous “yellow-brick road” inhabited by “Dorothy’s” friends the “Cowardly Lion,” the “Tin Man” and others and also introduced parade goers to Hi-Yu Queen Julie Basket and Princesses Kathie Dempsey and Sandra Selle. Hi-Yu would like to thank Warren Lawless (who refuses to guarantee the accuracy) for his help in compiling this interesting Hi-Yu trivia. Hi-Yu invites any resident of West Seattle who has a collection of photos, clippings and other memorabilia of past Hi-Yu festivals to consider contributing them to Hi-Yu with the hope that they could be archived in a permanent Hi-Yu collection at the SWSHS Log House Museum. Hi-Yu deserves a place in West Seattle history. Please contact the Hi-Yu Info line at (206) 932-3345.

West Seattle Hi-Yu Membership Information The Hi-Yu Summer Festival was started in 1934 by merchants in West Seattle as a way to thank the community for their business. These merchants recognized that the success of their businesses depended on the community. Through the years the task of designing and constructing the West Seattle Community Float, planning and staffing the Hi-Yu events, raising funds to support these activities as well as the scholarships awarded to the Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen and Princesses has shifted to a group of community volunteers and a few stalwart service clubs. Hi-Yu still looks to businesses in West Seattle for the lion’s share of the necessary funds, as well as to local residents (through button sales and memberships). Hi-Yu would like to thank all of you - businesses, service clubs and individuals - who have donated time, money or both to this year’s festival. Hi-Yu desperately needs your help in order to survive. You may feel you have nothing to contribute, but we guarantee that whatever you can offer (lending a hand to help build the float, helping to plan events, working at the Pirates Landing, selling buttons at the Street Festival, etc.) would be very much appreciated. If you wonder what you get out of your contribution to Hi-Yu, just look around at the smiles on the children’s faces as they participate in these family events and think about the message of a caring community these activities send to them. General Membership meetings are held all through the year at 7:15 pm at the West Seattle Senior Center. Call the Hi-Yu Info Line at (206) 932-3345 or check the website (www.hiyu.com) for up-to-date information, or to leave a message. On the back of this booklet you can find application forms for 2001-2002 membership. Individuals -- $20.00 Non-profit Organizations -- $30.00 Service Clubs -- $30.00 Candidate Sponsors -- $120.00 (plus membership) Business Membership Levels -- listed on back cover
