2008 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu

Hello West Seattle! I am honored to be your 2007-2008 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen. This year I graduated from West Seattle High School as one of fourteen valedictorians with Honors and I will be continuing my education in warm Tucson at University of Arizona. At the university I plan to major in business and management and get more accustomed to seeing the sun. My high school experience has been a fast and fun one. I played both varsity basketball and varsity soccer and was the captain of the soccer team for the past two years. I received a part in the school play and won my basketball league at Hiawatha Community Center. As ASB Vice President I had tons of fun speaking at and planning assemblies. This Spring I received a $1500 academic-athletic scholarship from the 1 0 1 Club of the Washington Athletic Club. Two girls and two boys are selected from 92 nominees throughout the Seattle School District. Hi-Yu is going to have a fantastic year with the beautiful float and the many events that are planned for the summer. My favorite events are the American Legion Parade and the Seafair Pirates Landing. I would like to give a special thanks to the American Legion Post #160 for sponsoring me last year as a candidate and I hope to see all of you at their parade this summer on California Ave in the Junction!

I am 11 years old, I attend Lafayette Elementary School, and I am currently in 5th grade Spectrum. I will be going to Denny Middle School in the Fall. I enjoy playing soccer, practicing my flute, reading, unicycling, working on Math and Writing and being involved at Westside Presbyterian Church. A few careers I am thinking about for my future include being an author, a model, a Senator, Governor, or U.S. Ambassador. I was born in La Jolla, California (that's in San Diego) to my parents, Lori and Ron Tongol. My little sister, Lindy, is two years younger than me, and recently our family was joined by our ShihTzu puppy, Jack! He is so cute! Hi Yu is so much fun and in encourage West Seattle families and it's young girls to get involved and participate! We have lots of meetings and events to get involved in and it's so much fun working on our annual float. I enjoy being a Girl Scout, playing handchimes with Hope Lutheran’s handchime choir, swimming, riding my bike on Alki, and camping with my parents and dog Sandy. I have been to every Seafair Coronation since 2002 and love meeting all the princesses! Someday I hope to be Miss Seafair, and a shark scientist. Being a part of Hi-Yu has been so much fun! I had a great time at the Hiawatha Halloween carnival, dancing in the snow with Santa at the Junction Tree Lighting, painting our float, and all the other fun activities we have gone to! When I am in the 7th grade, I look forward to taking the drama elective since I like to act. I also do many sports during the year. My favorite sport is softball – I play on the West Seattle Thunder and my rec league team is the Wildcats. I love to play pitcher and shortstop. Some of my other favorite sports are volleyball and basketball, which I play through my school. Our team is the Holy Rosary Gators. As much as I love sports, I also love Hi-Yu! Riding on the float has been a ton of fun. The time we got to ride in convertibles was an awesome experience. I collected lots of buttons and met lots of friendly people. Hi-Yu is everything I expected and more. My favorite part of Hi-Yu is meeting new girls and becoming closer to my Junior Court friends, Danica, Ally, Leah, and Vanessa. My name is Alicia Watanabe and I just finished my freshman year at the University of Washington. During high school I was a very spirited and active student as I was in Te n n i s , Cheer, Band (symphonic a n d marching), Key Club, Culture Club and French Club. I participated as a council member in Culture Club and French Club and was my class’s representative in t h e Advisory Council. I g ra d u ate d with honors and was g i v e n medals for Tennis, Key Alicia Watanabe Club and Excellent Academic Achieveme nt. My most significant volunteering took place at Camp Soundview, a Presbyterian Camp, aimed to help children in abusive and foster families. I have volunteered at least 50 hours every summer since 2003 as a Leader in Training. Not only did my relationship with God grow, but each year I came back a more responsible, aware, and adult person. At the University of Washington I plan on earning a major in C h e mistry, a minor in Biology as I work toward Medical School. My dream is to become a Pediatric Oncologist in honor of my brother James Rock Fila. I have been involved in the West Seattle Community since I was very young and therefore feel a strong need to give back to my community. Running for Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu will help me do that! My sponsor is American Legion Post #160. I've just finished my senior year at West Seattle High School. I stayed very busy with sports and student government. Soccer was the focus each fall and gymnastics in the winter. Between helping out fellow officers a n d p l ay i n g sports, I took jazz and hip hop classes a Kathy’s Studio of Dance. Over the past four years I have been involved in the drama club as well as the spring musicals at school. One of the most rewarding s e r v i c e projects I have been able to Katie Tarabochia help with this y e a r i s coaching a (6-7 year old) indoor soccer team for the Fauntleroy YMCA. I will be attending Seattle University this fall and pursuing my dream of becoming a nurse. I have been accepted into the Nursing School and

I just finished my junior year at Seattle Lutheran High School where I maintain membership in the National Honor society as well as appearing regularly on the Honor roll. My heart is in t h e service of others as is exe m p l ified by my volunteer work; with the elderly at Mount St. Vincent, as office assistance, in voluntary food services and as teacher ’s aid. I played varsity soccer and was voted captain of the track t e a m . Last year ’s accolades include placing at the state Grace Johnson c h a m p ionship track meet in the 4x200. My vision extends beyond the local community and into countries where others are less fortunate. I joined a team in Mexico and helped build a house for a needy family of eight, performed on the street theater and taught bible classes for children. Future plans include leadership training at Girls State in Ellensburg, mission work in Jamaica and studies at Seattle Pacific University and abroad, with potential studies involved in medical sciences. I have a very friendly and outgoing personality and am looking forward to participating in the West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival events. My sponsor is Kiwanis Club of West Seattle.

Hi, my name is Margo Femiano. I am eighteen years old and graduated from Chief Sealth High School with both a high school degree and an Associate of Arts. For the past three years at Chief Sealth I have been the President of the class of 2008 student body; I have helped organize school events and fund raise more than eight thousand dollars. I have also been involved in Sealth’s China Exchange Program, Robotics club and was a varsity softball captain for the past two years. Starting my Junior y e a r I enrolled in the Washington state Running Start Program, which enabled me to b e g i n taking college courses at the age of sixteen and complete an associate degree while in high Margo Femiano school. I have maintained an honor roll grade point average throughout all four years and have been placed on the South Seattle Community College Deans list for six consecutive quarters. Next year I will be attending Seattle University where I will begin a double major of Environmental Studies and Foreign Policy. Outside of school I am an active member of the Seattle Global Visionaries youth board, and a local volunteer work team leader for youth interested in alleviating problems concerning social injustices and global issues. I have accumulated more than 350 community service hours through volunteering with YMCA camp Orkila, Planned Parenthood of Western Washington, West Seattle’s theater group Pandomonium Players, and as a short term hospital volunteer in Antigua, Guatemala. As a Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu candidate, I cannot wait to begin participating in Hi-Yu events, meeting new people, and continuing volunteer work within my community. My sponsor is West Seattle Lions Club.

I am seventeen years old and will be a senior at Seattle Lutheran High School this fall. I am involved in the Seattle Lutheran Cheer Squad and I am also a member of the National Honor Society (NHS). I have been playing the piano since I was in second grade and now perform in my high school jazz band. When I was in eighth grade I joined a very prestigious youth choir called Vocalpoint. In my four years with Vocalpoint, I have worked a n d improved the dev elopment of my voice. I have attended Girl Scout Day Camp at Camp Long since first grade. When I entered high school I became a “Program Aid” at camp. As a program aid I assist the adult leaders and teach the younger girls songs and games. I feel loved by all the campers and I love to go back every year. Being a Girl Scout Program Aid has helped me learn great Lauren Vanderpool responsibility and care for children. Due to this experience, I would like to major in child development and early education after graduation. I love and care for the West Seattle community and am looking forward to participating in West Seattle Hi-Yu. My sponsor is West Seattle Rotary Club.

West Seattle Hi-YuSummer Festival

2008 West Seattle Seafair Representative Hello, my name is Trisha Thompson, and I was your 2006-2007 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen. I have many fun memories of my reign last summer, including fundraising at the West Seattle Junction Street Fair and attending the Kids’ Fishing Derby put on by the West Seattle Sportsmen’s club. This summer I am very proud and honored to represent West Seattle HI-Yu in the Seafair Scholarship Program for Women. I will be a junior at Seattle University this coming fall and am pursuing a degree in economics, which I hope will lead me into the field of economic development. This past year I have been very busy working at Care Medical Equipment, Inc, where I am a customer service representative and gather intake information to prepare the billing of durable medical equipment to health insurance companies. This last term I had a great time tutoring some amazing students at Washington Middle School. I would like to thank all the members of West Seattle Hi-Yu for the countless hours that they have invested in our organization to see the scholarship program grow, and I would especially like to thank my family for all their love and

support through all of my endeavors. I would also like to thank West Seattle as a neighborhood for providing a unique environment to grow up in that still has a strong sense of fellowship and c o m m u n i t y. With all of that said I look forward to seeing everyone at this summer’s Hi-Yu events.

2008 West Seattle Hi-Yu Community Float Designing the 2008 Hi-Yu float was really very fun and a learning experience for everyone involved. The process was a collaborative effort, which initially included everyone who attended the general Hi-Yu meeting in February to discuss and select this year’s float theme. It was decided at that meeting to give tribute to the historic Luna Park Amusement Park. Luna Park was considered the greatest amusement park in the Northwest and was located on the tide flats along Duwamish Head in West Seattle from 1907 to 1913. As a general theme, Luna Park provided an excellent platform for envisioning the float design. Once the theme was selected, a smaller group got together once a week to discuss ideas, review sketches, and to discuss the constructability of each item. With Murray’s Photography Luna Park as the theme, we had an abundant amount of elements that we could build on to create the float. Ideas included the building of a mini carousel, a roller coaster, ticket booths, visiting salmon and seagulls, Orca, calliope music, lots and lots of glittering lights, bubbles, and many more. The outcome of these sub-meetings were two sketch illustrations that I produced to help locate elements on the flat deck and to help everyone visualize the desired outcome. These sketches were really more like “guidelines” than actual rules, but the finished float bears remarkable similarity to the drawings. A huge “thanks” goes out to the many people who volunteered to help build the float and an even larger congratulation goes out to the same people for their ability to interpret those very Steve Fischer Float Design Chair rough sketches. The constructed float looks great! A special thank you to Ron Olson for working with Loren Gulhaugen on the roller coaster. Ron is a W.S. High School grad and an art major from the University of Washington. He lives in Maple Valley, but has traveled to West Seattle to help with our float, not only this year, but last year too. The royalty represent West Seattle admirably as “Luna Park” travels to 10 parades from May through October throughout the greater Puget Sound area. Our Junior Court: Queen Danica, Princesses Ally, India, Leah, and Vanessa, sit in roller coaster cars, while Senior Court Queen Sivona stands in front of the coaster track. We want to give a special “thank you” to Harbor Properties, who gave us use of a fantastic space to work on and store the float through August.

75th Annual West Seattle Parade

Photos by Peter Richards / Winston Family

Saturday, July 19th at 11am along California Ave SW On Saturday July 19th at 11:00 AM the American Legion Post 160 will start the West Seattle Parade along California Ave, beginning at SW Lander St. and continuing South 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmonds St. Highlights of the parade will include the All City Marching Band. This band is made up of students from all over the Seattle School District, and they meet twice a week throughout the summer rehearsing for all the parades in the city. Also Kennedy HS band will be there. This band has many local students who attend this Burien private high school. The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard taking your Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities, throughout the Puget Sound region. Plus the candidates for next years Miss Hi-Yu will also be riding in the parade. Keep buying those HiYu buttons! An exclusive to the West Seattle parade, the Seattle Police Motorcycle Drill Team will be hosting the Vancouver BC Police Motorcycle Drill Team. This is the only appearance they make in the Seattle area. Between the high precision Seattle team and the high speed Vancouver team it is a rare treat to have both these wonderful teams in the same parade. In addition to many local groups and businesses who will be participating, Seafair will be sending the Seafair Princesses and the Seafair family groups, which of course features the Seafair Pirates, and the Seafair Clowns. Please contact the American Legion regarding parade participation.

West Seattle Hi-YuSummer Festival

As lifelong West Seattlelites, we feel so fortunate that our design was chosen as the 2008 West Seattle Hi-Yu festival button. T h i s ye a r ' s b u tto n design was truly a family affair. Our family had a great time sketching designs we thought best represented this years “Luna Park” theme. We came up with many different versions and multiple designs, each one of us adding or changing something until we decided on the two different designs we ultimately submitted to Hi-Yu Murray’s Photography for their final vote. Because of our involvement with the Seattle Seafair C o m m o d o re s , w e h av e participated in local parades and festivals all over the state. Since she was 3 years old, Ally has collected over 100 pins and buttons from each one of these communities. She is so excited to have one of her very own designs to add to her collection! The Warnke Family T h a n k y o u H i - Yu f o r choosing our button design to commemorate the 2008 West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival! You will see the Warnke Family at the American Legion Grand Parade riding in a parade. Ally will be riding the roller coaster on the Hi-Yu float and her parents will be proudly walking alongside. Please visit the Hi-Yu website at www.HiYiu.com to view the button art in color. There is also an extensive gallery of past button designs online giving viewers a historical trip through Hi-Yu's past. Button sales have already begun so you will have an opportunity to add this one to your collection.

24 Years of Hi-Yu: 1984 Hi-Yu Then and Now! Q&A with the 1984-85 Hi-Yu Court. We asked the ladies a few questions and here’s what we got:

Q: Memory highlights from all of you about the year you represented West Seattle and running as a candidate A: Where do we begin, such a magical time for us. We all felt very special representing WS throughout the different community parades. We took our job very seriously, but we had fun too. From learning the Chicken Dance at the Sr Center to the Queen Christine Mueller, Janet Bredl (Kisch) 1st drenching cold rain of the daffodil parade to the opening of the Princess, Monica Kenny (Leahy) 2nd Princess Sharon Stone 3rd Princess WS High-rise bridge, we were there to show our pride in our community. We still laugh about drafting our brothers to walk A: HiYu is an important identity for West Seattle and the one the parades, secretly knowing we'd have the muscle to push the constant summer activity you can always rely on. Event Overview: In 1983, West Seattle merchants were looking for opportunities to promote the Junction and bring in more business, so a local business owner organized the first Junction Merchants’ Sidewalk Sale. Well-received, the sale continued year after year and became an annual Junction celebration. To this modest community event, music and activities were added and today it is renowned as the West Seattle Summer Fest – voted by Herald News readers as their favorite annual event. West Seattle Summer Fest now includes two music stages, beer gardens, hundreds of artist and craft booths, family fun activity areas and over 100 local merchants participating in a weekend festival celebrating community. Producing Organization: West Seattle Summer Fest is brought to you by West Seattle Junction Merchants and produced by West Seattle Junction Association, a non-profit organization of friendly business owners located in the heart of the West Seattle Junction. The mission of the West Seattle Junction Association is to develop, encourage, and promote activities that enhance a healthy economic, social and environmental climate for the West Seattle Junction community. West Seattle High School Alumni Association The West Seattle High School Alumni Association was started shortly after World War II by Erma Schwartz. The purpose of the Alumni Association is: 1. To foster the welfare and preserve the history of West Seattle High School 2. To organize the Alumni of West Seattle High School 3. To fund educational scholarships for recent graduates of West Seattle High School To this end we now have approximately 23,000 active Alums in our database. This year we were able to provide ten new scholarships and renew eleven previous scholarships. The renewals are awarded to the scholarship winners through four years of college study, providing the student has met the academic grade point criteria each year. The total dollar scholarship support for this year is approximately $114,000. Of that amount, $76,000 came from beneficiary donations and $38,000 came from the Alumni Association scholarship fund. If you would like to donate to the scholarship fund, checks can be made out to: WSHS Alumni Association, and sent to WSHS Alumni Association, 3000 California Ave., Seattle, WA. 98116. If you would like to establish an ongoing scholarship, please contact Gloria McCarty at (206) 936-4446. If you did not receive an Alumni Chinook, then we need your address. To get added to the database, please contact Chris King (206) 938-1937 or email [email protected].

Be Yourself. And Then Some. There’s nothing regimented about living at Merrill Gardens. You choose the floor plan for your apartment. Decorate it the way you want. Take part in your favorite activities. Invite friends over, or get to know a lot of new ones. Have a small pet. In short, live pretty much the way you want to. Minus the housework.

Stuff the Bus for Westside Baby WestSide Baby, in partnership with the community, provides essential items to local children in need by collecting and distributing diapers, clothing, toys, books and equipment. With a focus on the basics, WestSide Baby distributed more than $1.25 million in items in 2007. On July 27th, we will host our 8th Annual Stuff the Bus Diaper Drive at the West Seattle Farmers market. During this fun day (10am-2pm), we park a big yellow school bus near the Market and invite supporters to stop in with packs or boxes of diapers to help us fill the requests for more than 2,000 diapers we receive each week. Diapers are not covered by food stamps and collections like this assist families who are working class, in crisis or in transition to provide disposable diapers as required by most daycares. With costs rising, parents are faced with choosing between rent, food, gas and the more than 8 diapers a day a newborn may require. Soiled diapers lead to inconsolable babies, increased family stress and overall poor health and safety for our most vulnerable citizens. Please join us in helping to cover the more than 250,000 bums we expect to keep dry this year.

14th Annual West Seattle Garden Tour

The West Seattle Garden Tour celebrates the art of gardening for its 14th year on Sunday, July 20, 2008. This year's tour features an eclectic mix of nine residential gardens ranging from sustainable vegetable gardens to ornamental Asian gardens. You'll also be treated to a garden that feels like you've just taken a trip to Hawaii and another that has been transformed from a blackberry-choked embankment with gravelriddled clay soil into a freestyle realm of calming greenery. We're pleased to welcome as our lecturer, PlantAmnesty founder Cass Turnbull , author of Cass Turnbull's Guide to Pruning – What, When, Where & How to Prune for a Beautiful Garden who will present a noontime lecture. Tickets are $15 (which includes lecture admission) and will be available throughout the Seattle metro area beginning in June. Early ticket purchases are encouraged, as tickets sell out at ticket outlets on the day of the show. The 2007 edition of the West Seattle Garden Tour was one of our most successful, attracting over 650 tour-goers as well as raising $18,000 for ArtsWest and four specially selected beneficiaries. To top the year off, the West Seattle Garden Tour has become its' own non-profit corporation, breaking away from it's parent organization, and achieving 501(c)3 status. Each year, the Garden Tour donates a portion of the day's proceeds to Seattle-based non-profit organizations that promote horticultural education or community gardens. The proceeds from the 2008Garden Tour will once again benefit ArtsWest in addition to Multifaith Works, Ethel Dupar Fragrant Garden, Lighthouse for the Blind, Seattle Chinese Garden, and Elisabeth C. Miller Library University of Washington Botanic Gardens. Tickets will be available in June and July at the ArtsWest Theatre (4711 California Avenue SW, West Seattle; call 206/938.0339 to order tickets) and locations throughout the Seattle metro area, including: West Seattle Nursery, Admiral Metropolitan Market, Basic Green Box, Capers-Fremont, Capers-west Seattle, Junction True Value, Sharon's Westwood Florist, Swansons Nursery and

She and her family (husband Ron and younger daughter, Lindy and Danica), moved to West Seattle seven years ago from San Diego, CA and have found the community and people to be very warm and welcoming - it is like living in a small mid-western community; it's fun to run into friends everywhere you go. They are members of Westside Presbyterian church here in West Seattle. Lori works at SPU teaching for the Center for Learning and advising International Students on their nonimmigrant status.
