2005 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty Queen - Erin Waid
All Photos of Royalty by Murray’s Photography
I am honored to represent West Seattle as your 2004-2005 West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen. Since I moved to West Seattle from New Orleans ten years ago, I have enjoyed all of the community’s summer events, especially the street fair and the American Legion Grand Parade. I look forward to attending the Hi-Yu events this summer and meeting many people from the West Seattle community. I graduated from Holy Names Academy High School in 2003. While at HNA, I was involved in honors and Advanced Placement classes, was named a school officer, a recruiting officer, and an AP Scholar. A few of my extracurricular activities included piano, cross-country, track, and dance. I was also a math tutor for students at Lafayette Elementary School. My senior year, I received the President’s Scholarship from the University of Portland. This Fall, I will return for my junior year and continue my studies in Biology with concentration toward pre-med. While in Portland, I work as a First-Year workshop instructor. This allows me to help incoming college students with the many adjustments needed to make their first year at college a successful one. This summer, I will work as a nanny and take courses in chemistry at Seattle University. I would like to thank my family and friends for all of their love and support. I would also like to thank the Hi-Yu volunteers for their hard work, my neighborhood for being so supportive in the endeavor of completing the Hi-Yu float, and the Lion's Club for sponsoring me as a Hi-Yu candidate. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer. I look forward to seeing you at the Hi-Yu events!
Princess - Erin York After a year in New York, I am happy to be back in the laid back city of Seattle. I had a very successful freshmen year at Wagner College. I enjoyed all of the life the city had to offer as well as stayed active on campus. Next year I will be starting my sophomore year of college at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC as a Film Studies Major. As for the summer, I am working full time at Brennan Vacations and working with the Pandemonium Players on their August production of Fiddler on the Roof. I also look forward to the many exciting events we will be having for Hi-Yu. I would like to thank the Waid family for all their hard work to make this year’s float amazing and also my own family for supporting me and staying active in Hi-Yu in my absence.

Gina plans to pursue her MA in Public Administration upon graduation. Working at South Seattle Community College as the “Outreach Associate” enables her to visit local high schools, attend community events, and promote higher education at college fairs. She enjoys helping students be successful, whether it’s locating funds for tuition, learning about student resources, or giving campus tours. Living in West Seattle, Gina is also a part-time nanny for many families in the area. On the weekends, you can find her swing dancing, playing WoW, or simply hanging out at the Rocksport. Gina loves serving the West Seattle Community as a Hi-Yu Princess and encourages other young, strong, and intelligent women to explore these rewarding opportunities.
Princess - Timmesha Watson Timmesha is currently attending South Seattle Community College and plans to transfer to Central Washington University majoring in criminal justice. Her plans include a law degree at Seattle University’s Law School. While in school, she also works as a child care provider at Hiawatha Community Center and Schmitz Park Elementary. 2005 Miss Junior West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty Queen - Kathryn Gouker
All Photos of Royalty by Murray’s Photography
Aloha my West Seattle friends. My name is Kathryn Gouker and I'm your Junior court Queen. I attend Tilden School and will be going into 5th grade in the fall. My older brother, Mitch, will be going into 7th grade. My favorite classes include P.E., math, history, geography, and reading. I have been getting in touch with my artistic side by being in my school choir. I love to play softball, swim, dive and sing. When I grow up I want to be a 5th grade teacher or a professional horseback rider. I enjoy playing with my dog, Buffy, and hanging out with my neighborhood friends. In the summer you can usually find me at the Arbor Heights swim and tennis club where I am constantly busy with swim meets and dive tournaments. My goal in life is to travel to all fifty states and go to at least one place in every continent. I am excited to participate in the rest of the parades and festivals this year. As your Hi-Yu Junior Court Queen I am looking forward to representing West Seattle throughout the neighboring communities and meeting many different people and seeing wonderful new places. I know this will be an experience that I'll never forget and I'm sure I will have so much fun looking back on this once in a lifetime experience.
Princess: Nadya El-Araby
Princess: Miko Guzzardo
Hi West Seattle! I'm Nadya ElAraby, your 04-05 Hi-Yu Junior Court Princess. I'm 11
I am 10 years old and will enter sixth grade at Washington Middle School in the fall.
years old and I will be attending Madison Middle School next fall. I graduated from
While attending Layfayette Elementary school I was in the Spectrum (advanced curriculum) program since 1st grade. My favorite subject is drama. I have been in three plays at Lafayette - as Amaryllis in the “Music Man”, as a skunk in “Red vs.Wolf ”, and as Audrey in “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”. I play the cello in the WS Symphonette. During a Seattle Center Cherry Blossom festival I performed a solo Japanese folk dance. For the BSA (Boy Scouts) I've helped out with their "Scouting For Food" drives, and at the very first Washington State Scout Jamboree I assisted with the Cub World events.
Schmitz Park Elementary in June. In school I enjoy playing basketball, baseball, Danish kickball, and many other sports. At school I am on the jump rope chart and the juggling chart. My favorite subject in school would probably be P.E. because I love all the activities you get to do. I have also been in three plays at my school: Annie Jr., The Music Man, and Rats. I also love to travel. My dad is from Egypt, so every few years my mom, dad, my little sister, and I travel to Egypt to see my other side of my family and to just have fun! I very much enjoy being the Hi-Yu princess. There are many fun activities and parades to attend. I loved making friends with the other Junior Court members, Princess Miko and Queen Kathryn. I also enjoy riding on the float with the Senior Court. For any of you that want to have lots of fun, ride on a float and make new friends, I would definately suggest trying out for Hi-Yu. I look forward to seeing all of you at the upcoming Hi-Yu events and parades. Thanks!

My Hiawatha CC girl's basketball team placed second in the entire city of Seattle this year. Dogs and horses are my favorite animals. My hobbies include reading fiction books about animals and cooking. I like baking cookies and desserts. In the future I think I'd like to be a jockey, or a veterinarian. Participating as a Hi-Yu Junior Court Princess has been a very enjoyable opportunity, especially being on the float during the parades with all of the other Hi-Yu royalty.

2005 West Seattle Seafair Representative Danielle Shea Hello West Seattle! I was your 2003-2004 Senior Court Queen and I am ecstatic to represent West Seattle in the 2005 Miss Seafair Scholarship Program for Women. In the fall I will be a junior at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. At Whitman I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Gender Studies minor. I hope to either go into psychological counseling with children or become a lawyer focusing on cases involving women and children. I'm also very involved with my sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta in which I have held many offices and I'm a member of the West Seattle Kiwanis Club. In addition to my duties as a Seafair Princess I will be working at the West Seattle Family YMCA as a lifeguard and taking a course at the University of Washington.

2005 West Seattle Hi-Yu Community Float
Mike Palmquist
ou Y k n a h T eers Volunt The Oscar goes to Nathan May, a 4th grade student at Tilden School who submitted “ Holly- From beginning to final product, the float comes wood” as the theme together as a community building project. for the 2005 Hi-Yu float. In the true spirit of West Seattle, neighbors came together to bring the Chinese theater to life, gathering together over countless days and nights to build the float. The glitter of the marquee, with rotating Oscars heightens the excitement of the 2005 Hi-Yu Court’s arrival. Parade watchers can almost smell the popcorn as the Junior Court, front and center, precedes the red carpet. Junior Queen Kathryn Gouker along with Junior Princesses Nadya ElAraby and Miko Guzzardo are resplendent in their shimmery gold gowns. Senior Court Queen Erin Waid, flanked by the Chinese theater entrance, accompanies her Court comprised of Princesses Gina Nakamura, Timmesha Watson and Erin York. All ladies attired in a symphony of gowns be-fitting and opening night gala.

2005 West Seattle Grande Parade Saturday, July 23rd at 11am along California Ave SW
Sponsored by American Legion Post #160 Photos by Peter Richards
On Saturday, July 23rd, at 11:00 AM, the American Legion Post #160 will begin the 71st annual West Seattle Parade along California Avenue, starting at SW Lander Street and continuing south for 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmonds Street. Some highlights of the parade will include the SEAFAIR Pirates, All City Marching Band (made up of students from all over the Seattle School District), The Lake City Vigilantes, and the SEAFAIR Princesses, who are vying for the title of Miss SEAFAIR 2005 not to mention the 2004-2005 West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival Float and Royalty! The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard in the past months takingy o u r Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities from around the Puget Sound area. Keep buying those Hi-Yu buttons in order to continue making our festival float a reality! The West Seattle Parade was started by the American Legion Post #160 in 1934 by Post Commander Orville Rummel. He was also instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu Association, and in 1984 he created an annual award that is given to a community member each year for outstanding community service. Sadly, Orville has now passed away, but the legacy he has created will live on for generations to come. Be sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award winner at the beginning of the parade!

2005 West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival Souvenir Program
Seafair Pirates Land at Alki July 9, 2005 from 10am to 5pm The Seattle Seafair Pirates will once again lay siege to our fair West Seattle community when they storm the beach at the annual West Seattle Hi-Yu / Seattle Seafair Pirate's Landing at Alki. They will arrive on Alki to pillage and plunder during the H i -Yu S u m m e r Festival and “KickOff ” the annual S e a t t l e S E A FA I R events. The actionpacked day starts at Photos courtesy of Seafair Pirates website 10:00 AM and will offer family fun with entertainment, food and craft booths until 5:00 PM. Stage shows featuring local bands will entertain throughout the day on the CAR TOYS “Aftershock” Stage. “Shelly and The Curves”, with songs from the 60’s to the present, will headline the afternoon this year. Paul Miller of Flow Circus sponsored by Dreyer’s Ice Cream and Oh Boy! Oberto, will attempt to make the West Coast's largest balloon sculpture, a 14 foot long Pirate Ship. Back again this year, is the popular “Swashbuckler Beach Vault”, a US Track & Field sanctioned NW Regional Championship Pole Vaulting competition sponsored by the Willamette Strider's Track Club. SEAFAIR and West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and this year's candidates will make an appearance. Kids will love participating in the Pirates Look-alike contest sponsored by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, with great prizes. Stroll the Alki promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach. Lest we not forget the main event, The Seattle Seafair Pirates! The excitement builds as the time for the landing approaches. While the tide dictates the actual landing time, around noon, when you see the SFD Fireboat “Chief Seattle” spraying water and the “Yankee Clipper” Sea Scout Sailing Vessel near by, its' cannons banging away during the “battle”, you know the pirates are very close. The Seafair Pirates will “Hit” the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army Reserve. Captain Kidd will be leading the pirates in their landing on the beach at Alki, to officially start this summer’s SEAFAIR celebrations and to take over the city. They'll have a chest of treasure and plunder to share with their little pirate mateys, too. This year should be spectacular. Remembering what has happened in past years, what fiendish tricks could the Pirates have up their sleeve for this special event? Come join us for a great day at the beach! For more information, please call the West Seattle Hi-Yu information line at (206)932-3345 or on our Website at: www.hiyu.com

Kids Fishing Derby July 10, 2005 from 8am to 11am
Kids Under 13 with Adult Supervision It’s early Sunday morning. The city is still quiet. Birds are singing and the fish are hungry. It’s the perfect time to fish! On Sunday, July 10th, be prepared to be awakened by your young, enthusiastic anglers for the annual Kids’ Fishing Derby down at Seacrest Marina on Harbor Avenue. Fishing and festivities begin at 8:00am and continue until 11:00 am, when the prizes are bestowed upon the children by the 2005 West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and 2005-2006 Miss Hi-Yu Candidates. Donuts will be provided by Hole ‘n One Donut Co. Best of all, it’s absolutely free! (donations to either Hi-Yu or the W.S. Sportsman’s Club are welcome). Everyone is welcome to fish in the trout pond and poles will be provided. More experienced fishermen may desire to attempt to fish off the pier, and a limited number of poles will be available for pier fishing. The fishing derby is open to all kids 12 and under with adult supervision. So get your kids, your neighbor’s kids (hey what a great activity for kids’ clubs!) and prepare to join in the fishing fun! Call Jerry Mascio (206) 719-3528, for more information.
West Seattle Sportsman’s Club The West Seattle Sportsman's Club was founded in 1934 with the purpose of promoting the safe and responsible enjoyment of outdoor activities, conservation of our natural resources, and protection and restoration of our environment and wildlife. Every year the club sponsors boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 to attend the Washington State Junior Conservation Camp on Orcas Island, where they learn survival skills, fly tying and fishing techniques, current environmental issues, and have a lot of fun. The club also operates the Roger Dahl Rifle Range at the West Seattle Stadium. Its goal is to promote the safe and proper use and care of firearms for hunting and marksmanship. The range holds Hunter Education as well as Rifle Marksmanship classes and participates in rifle and pistol leagues including 4 Junior League matches each year. The range has seen at least one of its members go on to shoot in competition at the 1982 Summer Olympic Games. Regular events include fishing outings, Clam Bakes, Salmon Bakes, the Kid’s Fishing Derby, and more. For more information, please contact Jerry Mascio at (206) 719-3528.

2005 West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival Souvenir Program
Hi-Yu History and Information Kacey and the late Charlie Jung preserved a few mementos of their many years as active Hi-Yu devotees, which shed a little light on happier times in West Seattle. Twenty-nine years ago, the West Seattle Herald in it’s 50th Anniversary edition, acknowledged that Hi-Yu had also been around for at least fifty years. Hanning wrote that in 1923, with World War I behind it and the Great Depression seven years away, West Seattle was going through a period of rapid expansion. The business and professional community thought it rightful that they thank their clients, patients and customers appropriately for their patronage. What evolved was the first “All West Seattle Picnic.” The story doesn’t say where it was held, so we have to presume Lincoln Park was the site. In succeeding years, the event wore such titles as “Potlatch,” and “Mardi Gras.” The picnic, despite a one-year revival by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, succumbed to a combination of burgeoning red tape, mounting costs and disinterest and the years of celebrations which drew thousands to play games, enjoy entertainment and talent shows, the coronation and the drawing for a new car have faded into obscure history. In 1934 a contest was held to come up with a new name for the revived summer festival. The name that was chosen was “Hi-Yu” and that is why even though the celebrations and picnics preceded 1934 “Hi-Yu” is officially only seventy years old. The name Hi-Yu in local Puget Sound Chinook Jargon means “Big Time” or “Plenty”. Looking back, it’s interesting to note that the first “Pirates” to land at Alki Beach about 1934, were Sea Scouts of the “Yankee Clipper” sponsored by the West Seattle Lions Club and skippered by Captain John Kelly. Even at the fiftieth celebration, the scouts, switching roles, manned their worthy craft to guard West Seattle from the real Seafair Pirates who annually invaded Alki to kick off Hi-Yu. The tradition continues to this day. In the late 30’s an event was added to the program of Hi-Yu which attracted world-wide acclaim, a “heel-and-toe” race, commencing at the West Seattle YMCA, circled Lake Washington. Breaking into anything resembling a trot or running gait disqualified a competitor. Also popular during this same period were the boxing and wrestling matches held at Hiawatha Play Field. Still hooked on athleticism, the 1949 Picnic coincided with the official Northwest AAU swim meet at the new Colman Pool. It featured national-level swimming and diving championship events. In 1949 everyone in West Seattle was supposed to wear a red hat during the ten days of Hi-Yu. If you
got caught without one, you could get hauled before a “Kangaroo Kort” run by Speed Winquist and presided over by Superior Court Judge William Long. This is the origin of the red shirts and coats worn by Hi-Yu officials to this day. In 1950 under the leadership of The ferry “HiYu” in 1926, no doubt a predecessor to the President Don Waller Hi-Yu became original naming of Hi-Yu in 1934. an official partner of Seafair which included Hi-Yu in its schedule of events. West Seattle’s American Legion Grand Parade included scores of floats and other entries which appeared in neighborhood parades in the surrounding Puget Sound area. During several subsequent years, Hi-Yu was coordinated by Ted Best (then Secretary of the West Seattle Commercial Club) of Ted Best Associates. Some of the Hi-Yu presidents in that era included Dick Kennedy, John Kaufman and Arvid Andresen. When Ted Best was appointed to the City Council, Orville Rummell became Coordinator for a brief period and headquartered in a second-floor space above Nielsen Florists at California and Oregon. Ted Best renamed his firm West Seattle Associates. During the term of Leon Wagner in 1967, a group headed by Doris Richards and Warren Lawless, left the ad department of the West Seattle Herald to buy West Seattle Associates. They were hired to run Hi-Yu for -the next seven years. In addition to Wagner, presidents during those years included Jack Hanning and Bob Grieve. The premier event throughout all the years of Hi-Yu is the Grand Parade, then, now and hopefully always, a project of West Seattle American Legion Post 160. The parade actually preceded Hi-Yu by a few years. Bob Grieve was perennial chairman, and directed the event from a meter-maid vehicle which traversed the parade route many times as the parade proceeded south on California Avenue from Admiral Way to the Junction. A couple sections of bleacher which seated dignitaries were placed in front of Van Gilder’s and later Perry’s Furniture Store and parade entries were announced as they approached. The 1973 official Hi-Yu Parade Float, designed by Moe Beerman, won significant acclaim and still remains emblazoned on the exterior of the West Seattle Post Office as one of the “Murals of West Seattle.” The 56-foot float, “Magical Moments in the Land of Oz,” depicts the famous “yellow-brick road” inhabited by “Dorothy’s” friends the “Cowardly Lion,” the “Tin Man” and others and also introduced parade goers to Hi-Yu Queen Julie Basket and princesses Kathie Dempsey and Sandra Selle. The 1973 Hi-Yu festival was significant also because the Park Department, after having given its approval for the Kid’s Jamboree and the Carnival at the Golf Course and Stadium, withdrew its invitation two months prior to the events. The Golf Tournament was allowed to be held but it was suggested that the other activities could be held at Hiawatha Play Field. Park officials however feared the activities would mess up their newly renovated track and greensward and the surrounding neighbors petitioned the court for a restraining order to kill the use of the play field for the carnival. HiYu prevailed, but serious illness of the Carnival operator accomplished for the protesters what they failed to win in court. Hi-Yu would like to thank Warren Lawless (who refuses to guarantee the accuracy) for his help in compiling this interesting Hi-Yu trivia. Hi-Yu invites any resident of West Seattle who has a collection of photos, clippings and other memorabilia of past Hi-Yu festivals to consider contributing them to Hi-Yu with the hope that they could be archived in a permanent Hi-Yu collection at the SWSHS Log House Museum. Hi-Yu deserves a place in West Seattle history. Please contact the Hi-Yu Info line at (206) 932-3345 or contact us through our website at www.HiYu.com.
