As a 5th grader at Schmitz Park elementary I enjoyed playing the clarinet. I also loved to read, do classroom projects, and participate in juggling, jump roping, and stilt walking during gym. 2004 West Seattle Summer Festival Souvenir Program

2004 Souvenir Button This year Hi-Yu tried something different and something as old as the festival itself. As we have in the past 70 years, Hi-Yu held an open call for the community artists to seize the chance at becoming the official designer of the 2004 Souvenir Button. The new addition this year? Hi-Yu leveraged the internet to hold an online submission contest for the button design. We sent out emails and took submissions for designs through our website at www.HiYu.com. The design theme this year is “Celebrating 70! Hi-Yu’s 70th Anniversary.” Designs were encouraged to include themes based on the 1970’s era. Our winner this year is Amy Carter, mother of Junior Court Princess, Melissa Carter.

Murray’s Photography

ou Y k n a h T eers Volunt

The theme of the 2004 Hi-Yu float is Celebrating 70 in recognition of the 70th anniversary of the Summer Festival. Float chairman Tim Winston, From beginning to final product, the float comes together as a community building project. and a band of assemblers worked diligently to bring Dan Carver’s 1970’s dance club design to life. Tim Szender, father of junior court Princess Veronica Szender, has the 1967 vintage engine purring. The float features the senior court boogying on a phono record pedestal with a checkerboard dance floor, under spotlights & a mirror ball suspended from a light arch, backed by a glittering dome lit with a light organ. The front of the float holds the junior court, seated on lighted pink chairs. The sides and back feature oversized 70s, lit with race lights. The float, driven again this year by Karl Coy, along with the our junior and senior courts, represent our community in over a dozen Puget Sound area parades from Sequim to Issaquah. This would not be possible without the dedication of many volunteers, especially to court parents.

2004 West Seattle Grande Parade

Sponsored by American Legion Post #160 Photos by Peter Richards

Saturday, July 24 at 11am along California Ave SW On Saturday, July 24th, at 11:00 AM, the American Legion Post #160 will begin the annual West Seattle Parade along California Avenue, starting at SW Lander Street and continuing south for 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmonds Street. Some highlights of the parade will include the SEAFAIR Pirates, All City Marching Band (made up of students from all over the Seattle School District), The Lake City Vigilantes, and the SEAFAIR Princesses, who are vying for the title of Miss SEAFAIR 2004 - not to mention the 2004 West Seattle HiYu Festival Float and Royalty! The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard in the past months taking your Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities from around the Puget Sound area. Keep buying those HiYu buttons in order to continue making our festival float a reality! The West Seattle Parade was started by the American Legion Post #160 in 1934 by Post Commander Orville Rummel. He was also instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu Association, and in 1984 he created an annual award that is given to a community member each year for outstanding community service. Sadly, Orville has now passed away, but the legacy he has created will live on for generations to come. Be sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award winner at the beginning of the parade!

Rotary Kids Parade Saturday, July 24th, 10:30 am @ Oregon St & California Ave Decorate your bike, trike (no motorized vehicles allowed), pet, baby sister or brother! Dress up as if it was Halloween, bring your best smile and join the fun at the West Seattle Kiddies Parade, sponsored by the West Seattle Rotary Club. 2004 West Seattle Summer Festival Souvenir Program

Hi-Yu History and Information Kacey and the late Charlie Jung preserved a few mementos of their many years as active Hi-Yu devotees, which shed a little light on happier times in West Seattle. Twenty-nine years ago, the West Seattle Herald in it’s 50th Anniversary edition, acknowledged that Hi-Yu had also been around for at least fifty years. Hanning wrote that in 1923, with World War I behind it and the Great Depression seven years away, West Seattle was going through a period of rapid expansion. The business and professional community thought it rightful that they thank their clients, patients and customers appropriately for their patronage. What evolved was the first “All West Seattle Picnic.” The story doesn’t say where it was held, so we have to presume Lincoln Park was the site. In succeeding years, the event wore such titles as “Potlatch,” and “Mardi Gras.” The picnic, despite a one-year revival by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club, succumbed to a combination of burgeoning red tape, mounting costs and disinterest and the years of celebrations which drew thousands to play games, enjoy entertainment and talent shows, the coronation and the drawing for a new car have faded into obscure history. In 1934 a contest was held to come up with a new name for the revived summer festival. The name that was chosen was “Hi-Yu” and that is why even though the celebrations and picnics preceded 1934 “Hi-Yu” is officially only seventy years old. The name Hi-Yu in local Puget Sound Chinook Jargon means “Big Time” or “Plenty”. Looking back, it’s interesting to note that the first “Pirates” to land at Alki Beach about 1934, were Sea Scouts of the “Yankee Clipper” sponsored by the West Seattle Lions Club and skippered by Captain John Kelly. Even at the fiftieth celebration, the scouts, switching roles, manned their worthy craft to guard West Seattle from the real Seafair Pirates who annually invaded Alki to kick off Hi-Yu. The tradition continues to this day. In the late 30’s an event was added to the program of Hi-Yu which attracted world-wide acclaim, a “heel-and-toe” race, commencing at the West Seattle YMCA, circled Lake Washington. Breaking into anything resembling a trot or running gait disqualified a competitor. Also popular during this same period were the boxing and wrestling matches held at Hiawatha Play Field. Still hooked on athleticism, the 1949 Picnic coincided with the official Northwest AAU swim meet at the new Colman Pool. It featured national-level swimming and diving championship events. In 1949 everyone in West Seattle was supposed to wear a red hat during the ten days of Hi-Yu. If you got caught without one, you could get hauled before a “Kangaroo Kort” run by Speed Winquist and presided over by Superior Court Judge William Long. This is the origin of the red shirts and coats worn by Hi-Yu officials to this day. In 1950 under the leadership of President Don Waller Hi-Yu became an official partner of Seafair which included Hi-Yu in its schedule of events. West Seattle’s American Legion Grand Parade included scores of floats and other entries which appeared in neighborhood parades in the surrounding Puget Sound area. During several subsequent years, Hi-Yu was coordinated by Ted Best (then Secretary of the West Seattle Commercial Club) of Ted Best Associates. Some of the Hi-Yu presidents in that era included Dick Kennedy, John Kaufman and Arvid Andresen.

In Memoriam, R.R. “Bob” Grieve, 1920-2004

When Ted Best was appointed to the City Council, Orville Rummell became Coordinator for a brief period and headquarferry “HiYu” in 1926, no doubt a predecessor to the tered in a second-floor The original naming of Hi-Yu in 1934. space above Nielsen Florists at California and Oregon. Ted Best renamed his firm West Seattle Associates. During the term of Leon Wagner in 1967, a group headed by Doris Richards and Warren Lawless, left the ad department of the West Seattle Herald to buy West Seattle Associates. They were hired to run Hi-Yu for -the next seven years. In addition to Wagner, presidents during those years included Jack Hanning and Bob Grieve. The premier event throughout all the years of Hi-Yu is the Grand Parade, then, now and hopefully always, a project of West Seattle American Legion Post 160. The parade actually preceded Hi-Yu by a few years. Bob Grieve was perennial chairman, and directed the event from a metermaid vehicle which traversed the parade route many times as the parade proceeded south on California Avenue from Admiral Way to the Junction. A couple sections of bleacher which seated dignitaries were placed in front of Van Gilder’s and later Perry’s Furniture Store and parade entries were announced as they approached. The 1973 official Hi-Yu Parade Float, designed by Moe Beerman, won significant acclaim and still remains emblazoned on the exterior of the West Seattle Post Office as one of the “Murals of West Seattle.” The 56-foot float, “Magical Moments in the Land of Oz,” depicts the famous “yellowbrick road” inhabited by “Dorothy’s” friends the “Cowardly Lion,” the “Tin Man” and others and also introduced parade goers to Hi-Yu Queen Julie Basket and princesses Kathie Dempsey and Sandra Selle. The 1973 Hi-Yu festival was significant also because the Park Department, after having given its approval for the Kid’s Jamboree and the Carnival at the Golf Course and Stadium, withdrew its invitation two months prior to the events. The Golf Tournament was allowed to be held but it was suggested that the other activities could be held at Hiawatha Play Field. Park officials however feared the activities would mess up their newly renovated track and greensward and the surrounding neighbors petitioned the court for a restraining order to kill the use of the play field for the carnival. Hi-Yu prevailed, but serious illness of the Carnival operator accomplished for the protesters what they failed to win in court. Hi-Yu would like to thank Warren Lawless (who refuses to guarantee the accuracy) for his help in compiling this interesting Hi-Yu trivia. Hi-Yu invites any resident of West Seattle who has a collection of photos, clippings and other memorabilia of past Hi-Yu festivals to consider contributing them to Hi-Yu with the hope that they could be archived in a permanent Hi-Yu collection at the SWSHS Log House Museum. Hi-Yu deserves a place in West Seattle history. Please contact the Hi-Yu Info line at (206) 932-3345 or contact us through our website at www.HiYu.com.

Seafair Pirates Land at Alki July 10, 2004 from 11am to 5pm The Seattle Seafair Pirates will once again lay siege to our fair West Seattle community when they storm the beach at the annual Hi-Yu Pirate’s Landing at Alki. They will arrive on Alki to pillage and plunder during the Hi-Yu Summer Festival. The action-packed day starts at 11:00 AM and will offer family fun and entertainment. The pirates will land about noon. Back also is the “Swashbuckler Beach Vault”, a US Track & Field sanctioned NW Regional Championship Pole Vaulting competition sponsored by the Willamette Strider’s Track Club. SEAFAIR and West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and this year’s candidates will be there to talk and mingle to the Hi-Yu festival goers. Kids love participating in the Jr. Pirate contest sponsored by the West Seattle Kiwanis Club. (see below for more information). Enjoy the food provided by different vendors as you stroll the Alki promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach. The Seafair Pirates will “Hit” the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army Reserve. This year should be spectacular. It is the Seattle Seafair th Pirates 55 year. Kids Fishing Derby July 11, 2004 from 8am to 11am

Kids Under 13 with Adult Supervision It’s early Sunday morning. The city is still quiet. Birds are singing and the fish are hungry. It’s the perfect time to fish! On Sunday, July 11th, be prepared to be awakened by your young, enthusiastic anglers for the annual Kids’ Fishing Derby down at Seacrest Marina on Harbor Avenue. Fishing and festivities begin at 8:00am and continue until 11:00 am, when the prizes and ice cream are bestowed upon the children by the 2004 West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and 2005 Miss Hi-Yu Candidates. Donuts will be provided by Hole ‘n One Donut Co. Best of all, it’s absolutely free! (donations to either Hi-Yu or the W.S. Sportsman’s Club are welcome). Everyone is welcome to fish in the trout pond and poles will be provided. More experienced fishermen may desire to attempt to fish off the pier, and a limited number of poles will be available for pier fishing. The fishing derby is open to all kids 12 and under with adult supervision. So get your kids, your neighbor’s kids (hey what a great activity for kids’ clubs!) and prepare to join in the fishing fun! Call Jerry Mascio (206) 719-3528, for more information.

West Seattle Sportsman’s Club The West Seattle Sportsman's Club was founded in 1934 with the purpose of promoting the safe and responsible enjoyment of outdoor activities, conservation of our natural resources, and protection and restoration of our environment and wildlife. Every year the club sponsors boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 to attend the Washington State Junior Conservation Camp on Orcas Island, where they learn survival skills, fly tying and fishing techniques, current environmental issues, and have a lot of fun. The club also operates the Roger Dahl Rifle Range at the West Seattle Stadium. Its goal is to promote the safe and proper use and care of firearms for hunting and marksmanship. The range holds Hunter Education as well as Rifle Marksmanship classes and participates in rifle and pistol leagues including 4 Junior League matches each year. The range has seen at least one of its members go on to shoot in competition at the 1982 Summer Olympic Games. Regular events include fishing outings, Clam Bakes, Salmon Bakes, the Kid’s Fishing Derby, and more. For more information, please contact Jerry Mascio at (206) 719-3528.

West Seattle High School Alumni Association

Murray’s Photography

As one of the largest and most active alumni associations in the United States, the WSHS Alumni Association strives each year to accomplish their two main purposes: 1) to foster the welfare and preserve the history of WSHS, and 2) to fund educational scholarships for the benefit of graduates from West Seattle High School. Within the last two years, the Association has also provided scholarships to decendants of West Seattle High School graduates. The Association has fought hard to preserve the history of WS by challenging the school district decision to remove "Indians" from our school name. It is this very heritage, a heritage rich and strong in West Seattle, that has kept our alumni proud and dedicated to our school. Over the past four years, the Association has provided over $210,000.00 dollars for scholarships. For the school year 2001/2002 - $37,000, for 2002/2003 - $50,000, in 2003/2004 - $53,000, and for this West Seattle High School after renovation. Much of the original facade was kept school year alone, over $70,000 was awarded. These scholarships in tact. include money given to the Association in memorials. As of June 2004, the Alumni Association has provided full four year tuition for eight deserving graduates. Three more will graduate next June and five more in 2006. Please continue to send in donations for Alumni scholarships. This will ensure our ability to provide ongoing scholarships for deserving seniors. Checks can be sent to the High School: WSHS Alumni Association, 3000 California Ave, Seattle Wa. 98116. The Alumni Association is still looking for any unwanted yearbooks. Call Betty Broughton at (206) 932-6583 if you find one you would like to donate. Are you receiving the annual Alumni edition of the Chinook newspaper? If not, then we need your address! Hiawatha Community Center

2004 Junior Court Coronation

Hiawatha Community Center is one of twenty-four community centers operated by Seattle Parks and Recreation. Located in the heart of the Admiral District in West Seattle, it offers a wide array of programs and special events. Each quarter of the year, Hiawatha Community Center classes and special events are offered for you and your family. Before and after school care, gymnastics, dance, basketball, track, volleyball, and day camps are just some of the programs available for youth. Adult classes include dance, yoga, T'ai Chi, and tennis. To request a copy of our quarterly brochure, please call us at (206) 684-7441 or stop by the center. In addition to quarterly classes, the center runs many annual special events, including the Spring Egg Hunt on the Saturday before Easter, the Kid's Fun Festival on the third Friday in July, the Mediterranean Fantasy Festival on the third weekend in July, the Pancake Breakfast February or March, and the Halloween Carnival in October on the Friday before Halloween. Sports fields, lighted running track, tennis courts, wading pool, batting cage, and a children's play area are available just outside the front door. Inside there is a gym, an auditorium with stage, a weight room, a game room, and a meeting room. In its leadership role, the Hiawatha Advisory Council plans, organizes, funds, and operates programs in the center and on the playfield. You and your family are invited to enjoy the recreation activities at Hiawatha. If you would like to join other likeminded citizens and the professional staff at Hiawatha with the development and operation of programs, you are invited to join the council. Public support is an essential element of the Council.

The Hi-Yu Junior Court Coronation will be held this year on Friday, July 16th, in conjunction with the Hiawatha Kids Fun Festival. Coronation of the 2004-2005 Junior Court will be held at 1:00pm on the main stage.
