2006 Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty Queen - Michelle Edwards

All Photos of Royalty by Murray’s Photography

I am very honored to be your 2005-2006 West Seattle Hi-Yu Queen this year. The Hi-Yu organization has always been a major part of my life and I am proud to be representing West Seattle as a member of the Senior Court. After building floats at the age of five in the driveway of my house, taking beautiful pictures at the Walkers Rock Garden every year, and competing in bowling tournaments to win the coolest totem pole trophies I had ever seen, I am really excited to be a big part of the long lasting tradition of this summer festival. I graduated from Evergreen High School in 2005 where I was a varsity soccer player and also very involved with the music program. I was the Drum Major of the marching band, flute section leader of the symphonic band and piano player of the jazz band. With music being one of my biggest interests, I continue to play piano with the West Seattle Big Band, percussion and flute in the Highline Community Band, and piccolo in the University of Washington Husky Marching Band which I was accepted into this last fall. I currently attend South Seattle Community College where I plan to earn my A.A. degree and transfer to the University of Washington where I will pursue a B.A. degree in music education. I can't wait to become an instrumental music educator and teach future young adults the passion of music and the importance of leadership within a community. In my free time when I am not attending classes, playing in the Husky Marching Band or working in the bookstore at S.S.C.C, I can often be found swing dancing at Century Ballroom, buying ice cream at Husky Deli, or bowling with friends at Magic Lanes bowling alley. I would like to thank my family for all of the hard work they are putting in to make this year possible and my friends for supporting me through all of my events. I would also like to thank the American Legion Post # 160 for supporting me as a Hi-Yu candidate last year. And of course, I would like to thank all of the Hi-Yu volunteers that make this summer festival possible. I am looking forward to seeing the West Seattle community participating at all of the Hi-Yu events this summer!

Princess - Savannah Hendrickson My name is Savannah Hendrickson. I was born in Seattle Washington and grew up with the West Seattle community. I am the youngest of four girls, but I have moved around a lot my whole life, living with different cousins being one of the oldest of my household. But no matter where I go I am always making new family and friends. Through out high school I played basketball, cheered and have always kept a job. I graduated from Chief Sealth High School in 2005 which was one of my biggest accomplishments. I enjoyed high school for the most part almost every year. I put on the Martin Luther King Assembly or Black History Month Celebration. Those are the types of things I like to do & plan. I also enjoy working with other people, creating shows and having fun. That's why I chose to go to college where I did. I am currently enrolled in Central Washington University, and next year I will be a sophomore. When the time comes I will declare my major in communications. I am currently involved with the Hi-Yu organization as a 2005-2006 princess; Hi-Yu takes up most of my time which is all I am working on now and looking for a flexible job.

Trisha Thompson

Hi, my name is Trisha Thompson. I am currently a senior at the Bush School, where I am the leader of our dance planning committee, the Social Committee, and the Senior Co-Editor of our yearbook, Tykoe. Currently I have dedicated myself to social rights and understanding within my own school community, as a member of the diversity club Bridges and attendee of the White Privilege Conference 2006 in St. Louis, Missouri. Since my attendance to the conference I have participated and conducted discussions and presentations during The Bush School Board of Trustees meeting, The Bush School-Upper School Forum, and the Junior Class Meetings. I enjoy reading, writing, painting, and sketching. In the fall I intend on leaving the big city for the small town of Galesburg, Illinois to attend Knox College as an entering freshman. There I hope to study English and Journalism, and in the future I intend to pursue a career working towards civil and social justice. Her sponsor is the West Seattle Lion's Club Murray’s Photography

Keili Geller is the daughter of Steven and Shirley Geller. Keili loves to snowboard, spend time with friends at Alki beach, scrapbook, and volunteer. She has appeared in Into the Woods & Suessical at ArtsWest and Fiddler on the Roof for Pandemonium Players. At Forest Ridge she has appeared in many plays including Little Shop of Horrors, Chicago! and Once Upon a Mattress. A big believer in giving back to the community-- Keili has cleared trails, fed the homeless at St. Michelle Edwards Martin de Porres, tutored school children at Our Lady of Guadalupe, is starting her third year as cheer coach at Hope Lutheran School, has taught Vacation Bible School and was Sunday school teacher's assistant for four years at Hope Lutheran Church. She is actively involved with Young Keili Geller Life and Hope's Youth Group. Keili has been volunteering for Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Western Washington since she was seven years old and is currently the Teen Event Coordinator, which includes arranging and leading monthly teen socials at the Ronald McDonald House. Keili 's summer plans are to be a good candidate for HIYU and the community of West Seattle, climb a mountain in British Columbia, be an extra on One Tree Hill and narrow down her college choices until she finds the one that will nurture her passion for musical theater and communications. Her long-term plans involve singing and dancing on stage, working as the editor of a magazine and creating awareness about the need for research of children's cancers. 2006 West Seattle Seafair Representative Erin Waid My year as Miss West Seattle 2004-2005 was a fun and memorable experience. Thanks again to all who helped make our float the Grand Prize winner in the Torchlight Parade, including my neighbors who took time out of their busy schedules to lend a hand.

Leave Home Without Leaving the Neighborhood.

I am honored to represent the West Seattle community in the SEAFAIR Scholarship Pageant this summer. I look forward to attending many multicultural events which celebrate the diversity within Seattle. This summer, I will also be working as a nanny and studying for the MCAT test in preparation for medical school admissions. I am very excited for the busy and fun summer ahead! “THE STORE WITH THE CLOCK”

2006 West Seattle Hi-Yu Community Float From beginning to final product, the float comes together as a community building project.

Lisa Nichols

For many Saturdays, sequestered in a warehouse in South Seattle, a dedicated group of volunteers gathered to plan and build this year's float. As is often the case, there was a lot of “I wonder if we could put this over here?' and “What if we do this instead?” The end result is this year's “Dancing In The Rain,” with ducks, a frog, a birdbath and lots of umbrellas in a park-like setting. With the Junior Court traditionally sitting in front and the Senior Court standing center-stage, the float takes on a life of it's own! Junior Court Princess Alex Rodal, Princess Alison Nichols and Queen Emily Lyons are resplendent in their light blue gowns. The girls have become good friends through working on the float, practicing their dance routine and staying up late during sleep-overs. Senior Court Princess Lori Nguyen, Princess Savannah Hendrickson and Queen Michelle Edwards grace the colorful float with their light and dark blue gowns. Despite busy school and work schedules, the girls have smiled through cold, wind, rain and sometimes even sunshine, waving to and greeting parade-goers.

Photography by Negatives on File Since 1965 The Natural,

“Dancing In The Rain” will appear in thirteen parades in the greater Puget Sound area this season. While a number of volunteers have spent many hours making this happen, special thanks go out to Mike Palmquist, Karen Haynes-Palmquist and Garth and Linda Olsen at GT Towing.

2006 West Seattle Grande Parade

Sponsored by American Legion Post #160 Photos by Peter Richards

Saturday, July 22nd at 11am along California Ave SW On Saturday, July 22rd, at 11:00 AM, the American Legion Post #160 will begin the 71st annual West Seattle Parade along California Avenue, starting at SW Lander Street and continuing south for 1.5 miles to the West Seattle Junction, ending at Edmonds Street. Some highlights of the parade will include the SEAFAIR Pirates, All City Marching Band (made up of students from all over the Seattle School District), The Lake City Vigilantes, and the SEAFAIR Princesses, who are vying for the title of Miss SEAFAIR 2006 not to mention the 2005-2006 West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival Float and Royalty! The West Seattle Hi-Yu float crew has been working very hard in the past months takingy o u r Hi-Yu float to parades throughout the Northwest. As a result of their hard work, parade floats are expected from several communities from around the Puget Sound area. Keep buying those Hi-Yu buttons in order to continue making our festival float a reality! The West Seattle Parade was started by the American Legion Post #160 in 1934 by Post Commander Orville Rummel. He was also instrumental in the formation of the original Hi-Yu Association, and in 1984 he created an annual award that is given to a community member each year for outstanding community service. Sadly, Orville has now passed away, but the legacy he has created will live on for generations to come. Be sure and look for the Orville Rummel Award winner at the beginning of the parade!

2006 West Seattle Hi-Yu Summer Festival Souvenir Program

Seafair Pirates Land at Alki July 8, 2006 from 9:30am to 5pm The Seattle Seafair Pirates will once again lay siege to our fair West Seattle community when they storm the beach at the annual West Seattle HiYu / Seattle Seafair Pirate's Landing at Alki. They will arrive on Alki to pillage and plunder during the Hi-Yu Summer Festival and “Kick-Off ” the annual Seattle SEAFAIR events. The action-packed day starts at 9:30 AM and will offer family fun with entertainment, food and craft booths until 5:00 PM. Stage shows featuring local bands will entertain throughout the day on the CAR-TOYS “Aftershock” Stage. “Sherry and The Curves”, with songs from the 60’s to the present, will headline the afternoon this year. Back again this year, is the popular “Swashbuckler Beach Vault”, a US Track & Field sanctioned NW Regional Championship Pole Vaulting competition sponsored by the Willamette Strider's Track Club. SEAFAIR and West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and this year's candidates will make an appearance. Kids will love participating in the Pirates Look-alike contest sponsored by the West Seattle

Kiwanis Club, with great prizes. Stroll the Alki promenade, listen to the music, or just lay in the sun on our beautiful beach. The excitement builds as the time for the Seafair Pirates’ landing approaches. While the tide dictates the actual landing time, around noon, when you see the SFD Fireboat “Chief Seattle” spraying water and the “Yankee Clipper” Sea Scout Sailing Vessel near by, its cannons banging away during the “battle”, you know the pirates are very close. The Seafair Pirates will “Hit” the beach in Landing Craft provided by the U.S. Army Reserve. Captain Kidd will be leading the pirates in their landing on the beach at Alki, to officially start this summer’s SEAFAIR celebrations and to take over the city. They’ll have a chest of treasure and plunder to share with their little pirate mateys, too. If ye dare, you can try yer hand at the Dread Man’s Chest treasure grab for a chance to win a Dread Pirate game from Front Porch Classics. Don’t be forgettin’ that the first 500 kids will get a free toy pirate kit ta take home. Come get yer treasure while ya still can. This year should be spectacular. Remembering what has happened in past years, what fiendish tricks could the Pirates have up their sleeve for this special event?

“Shelly & the Curves”- Main Stage Entertainment Add equal parts of Aretha Franklin, Sister Sledge and Blondie, mix with Aerosmith’s and AC/DC’s driving rhythm section and what do you get…Seattle’s best party and dance band, Shelley & the Curves! West Seattle Junction Festival www.WestSeattleFestival.com July 14th-16th, 2006 Friday & Saturday 10am - 8pm / Sunday 10am-6pm In 1983, West Seattle merchants were looking for opportunities to promote the Junction and bring in more business. A local business owner, Margaret Miaullis, came up with the idea and initiated and organized the first Junction Merchants’ Sidewalk Sale. Well-received, the sale continued year after year and became an annual Junction celebration. To this modest community event, music and activities were added and today it is renowned as the West Seattle Summer Fest and has been voted by Herald-News readers as their favorite annual event. West Seattle Summer Fest now includes two music stages, beer gardens, hundreds of artist and craft booth, a family fun activity area and over one hundred merchants participating in an outdoor sidewalk market. Margaret's passion for her community and her adaptable, willing attitude was the festival’s foundation, and her spirit, dedication and commitment kept it going and insured its success for 21 years until her retirement in 2004. The Junction Association’s goal is to continue producing and growing the festival with the same integrity that Margaret did for so many years. Formerly the West Seattle Junction Festival, West Seattle Summer Fest, now in its 24th year, annually attracts over 30,000 fair-goers from all over the region. During West Seattle Summer Fest, food, crafts, art, and music line The Junction while merchants open up and out onto the streets to promote

Free Kids Fishing Derby July 16, 2006 from 8am to 11am

Kids 12 & Under with Adult Supervision It’s early Sunday morning. The city is still quiet. Birds are singing and the fish are hungry. It's the perfect time to fish! On Sunday, July 16th, be prepared to be awakened by your young, enthusiastic anglers for the annual Kids' Fishing Derby down at Seacrest Marina on Harbor Avenue. Fishing begins at 8:00am and continues until 11:00am, when the prizes are bestowed upon the children by the 2006 West Seattle Hi-Yu Royalty and 2006-2007 Miss Hi-Yu Candidates. Best of all, it's absolutely free! (donations to either Hi-Yu or the West Seattle Sportsman's Club are welcome). The fishing derby is open to all kids 12 and under with adult supervision. So get your kids, your neighbor's kids (hey what a great activity for kids' clubs!) and prepare to join in the fishing fun! Call Jerry Mascio (206) 7193528 for more information.

West Seattle Sportsman’s Club The West Seattle Sportsman's Club was founded in 1934 with the purpose of promoting the safe and responsible enjoyment of outdoor activities, conservation of our natural resources, and protection and restoration of our environment and wildlife. Every year the club sponsors boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 to attend the Washington State Junior Conservation Camp on Orcas Island, where they learn survival skills, fly tying and fishing techniques, current environmental issues, and have a lot of fun. The club also operates the Roger Dahl Rifle Range at the West Seattle Stadium. Its goal is to promote the safe and proper use and care of firearms for hunting and marksmanship. The range holds Hunter Education as well as Rifle Marksmanship classes and participates in rifle and pistol leagues including 4 Junior League matches each year. The range has seen at least one of its members go on to shoot in competition at the 1982 Summer Olympic Games. Regular events include fishing outings, Clam Bakes, Salmon Bakes, the Kid’s Fishing Derby, and more. For more information, please contact Jerry Mascio at (206) 719-3528.

West Seattle Art of Gardening Tour Building on the historic attendance and fundraising highs of the 2005 edition, the West Seattle Garden Tour celebrates the art of gardening for its 12th year on Sunday, July 16. This year’s tour features an eclectic mix of eight residential gardens‹from beachside native plants to an homage to the Mount Huangshan area of China that will bring inspiration to your own garden. And we're pleased to welcome Seattle P-I columnist and author Marty Wingate, who will present a noontime lecture drawing upon her all-around Northwest gardening expertise. In addition to the gardens, we’re also highlighting a stop at the Denny Wetland Nursery, where Denny Middle School students learn about native plants and sustainable watershed restoration. Tickets are $15 (which includes lecture admission) and will be available throughout the Seattle metro area beginning in June. Early ticket purchases are encouraged, as the West Seattle Street Fair will be taking place on this same date. Each year, the Garden Tour donates a portion of the day’s proceeds to West Seattle-based non-profit organizations that promote horticultural education or community gardens. The proceeds from the 2006 Garden Tour will benefit Nature Consortium (helping their West Duwamish greenbelt restoration project), Chief Sealth High School (aiding in their landscaping project near Longfellow Creek), and Seattle Youth Garden Works/Marra Farm Coalition (providing funding for their garden-based education and employment programs for homeless and under-served youth), in addition to ArtsWest.
