IN THE NEWS More al fresco dining THE Surfers Restaurant, in Banks Road, West Kirby, has been given the go-ahead to expand its outdoor seating. Wirral Council approved the planning application to change the use of part of the pavement, although the area was smaller than the restaurant had asked for. A council report said: “Whilst objections were received regarding the growing number of latenight uses in West Kirby, the proposal is an addition to an existing business, and it is the natural progression that successful businesses expand and develop. It is not considered the cumulative impact of the proposal will have a negative impact on the character of the area, as the restaurant and outside seating area is already established.” School’s best ever results THE GCSE results at Calday were the best ever with 55% of entries graded A* or A and the highest ever average points score. Special congratulations go to Jonathan Campbell and Joe Denniss who both achieved a tremendous 11A*. In 2011, Calday celebrates its 375th anniversary. The centrepiece of the anniversary celebrations will be the first ever completion by a school of a relay from Land’s End to John O’Groats, involving pairs of runners covering more than 1,000 miles. High flyers GUIDES from the 1st West Kirby group were treated to their very own airshow when they visited RAF Valley, on Anglesey, recently. The girls were also shown how the mountain and sea rescue teams go about their work. Accident blackspot WORK has finally begun on a new roundabout near the Cottage Loaf pub, at Thurstaston, in an attempt to reduce accidents. The work is expected to last nearly two months, during which time there will be closures to Station Road and Thurstaston Road as well as overnight closures to Telegraph Road.

Hazlehurst’s Linen Shop WE got off to an inauspicious start last month! In the first edition we incorrectly said that Hazlehurst’s shop, on Banks Road, is closing down. Proprietor Ian Hazlehurst informs us that the shop is not fully closing down but he is restructuring the business and most certainly will be carrying on with with his window blind supply & fit service as featured in the advert in this month’s edition. Apologies for the error.

Youth policy pays dividends fo YOU may have driven past Caldy RFC a hundred times and not realised that it is one of the biggest and most successful rugby clubs on the Wirral. Situated between West Kirby and Heswall, it is set in the beautiful grounds of Thurstaston Country Park and not only plays host to Caldy’s four senior squads but also has an extremely successful Junior and Mini’s section that includes two flourishing Girl’s sides at U15 and U18. Caldy’s 1st XV have been leading the way with their consistently strong performances that have secured them a place in the National 2 North League. Director of Rugby Matt Holt says: “The boys have done well, we managed to finish a strong second last year to ensure our promotion into the new National Two North Division. There is no denying that this league is going to be an extremely competitive one but I am confident that we can improve on last year.” Caldy RFC have a One Club policy that ensures both the Junior and Mini’s sections are well supported and as such thrive in their own right. At the end of last season the Junior section’s success was highlighted on Sunday

the 26th of April when the U13’s, U14’s and U15’s each fought their way to victory in the Cheshire Cup final that was hosted at the club. The U13’s won a thrilling final against local rivals Wirral, battling their way back from 10 – 14 down to win their 1st Cheshire Cup final 17 – 15 in a closely fought game. The U14’s had an equally tough final against Stockport. However, a previous training session with, All Black, Zinzan Brooke managed to provide the boys with all the drive they needed to overpower the Stockport forwards and fight their way back from 0 – 7 to take the lead and finish a comfortable 20 points to 7. The pressure was now on for the U15’s to complete the hat trick and win their final against a strong Lymm team. The tight score line (5-5, 10-5, 17-10, 17-17) reflects just how hard the boys had to work for each point. Lymm never backed down, even when Caldy were awarded a penalty inside Lymm’s 22 in the last five minutes of the game. Liam Isaacs made the decision to kick for goal and delivered making the score 20 – 17 and, for the third time that day, Caldy celebrated in style.

or rugby club Iain Corlett, chairman of the Caldy Junior section commented: “It was such an amazing day, electric, and to have hosted it at the club as well, the atmosphere was unbelievable. It’s a day that won’t be forgotten at the club, we’re so proud of our boys – all of them!” It is not surprising that many of the 1st and 2nd team places are filled with players who have come right through the club. There are also those players, such as Shaun Woof (club captain), who have progressed to play representative and Premiership rugby, but who have returned to Paton Fields to play at their beloved club and pass on their knowledge and experience. Woof reflects, “This is a club you come back to, we all do, it’s a special place”. Having said that, it is also a club that openly welcomes new members; be they supporters, players or sponsors. So if you fancy coming down for a day you won’t be disappointed! www.caldyrugby.co.uk Pictures show the trophy winning Under 15s team in action during their final against Lymm earlier this year

Strong start for senior teams THE 1st XV have enjoyed some good results at the beginning of the season. They defeated London Scottish 78-0 in a friendly before seeing off Westoe 38-15 in their opening league game. Huddersfield ended the unbeaten run with a 32-17 win at Caldy in a game dominated by penalties. The 2nd XV lost 22-16 to Lymm in the County Cup but recovered their form in the opening two league games with a 51-7 win over Altrincham and a 47-5 hammering of Birkenhead Park. The 3rd XV lost 22-12 to Sefton in their first outing in the league but beat Crewe and Nantwich 41-7 the following week. The Senior Colts beat Wirral 20-16 in a tight encounter in the league.

MAKE A WILL BUT AT WHAT PRICE?

10

There used to be a slogan that “Making a Will won’t kill you”. The whole point of making a Will is to make sure that you decide who receives the assets within your estate so it does not fall under the intestacy rules or leave you with unnecessary inheritance tax implications However, who you choose to prepare your Will might have consequences that do not coincide with your intentions, warns Maxwell Hodge Solicitors. Recently there have been situations where people have died and their loved ones produce the Will only to find that the gifts are invalid, as the Will has not been properly drafted. There are many advertisements in newspapers of companies who advertise as “Will writing companies” but, a) who regulates them? b) what happens to the Wills they store if they go out of business? c) what qualifications do they have? d) are they insured if they are negligent? You will often find that their Wills are “kitchen sink” i.e. include everything just in case something is missed, but it is by using that method that errors are made and gifts are then invalid. As a firm of solicitors, we are governed by the Law Society and are covered by insurance, and at Maxwell Hodge we specialise in this area of work. Our Wills are specific to each client’s individual

circumstances and tailored to their requirements. It is therefore vital that proper advice is sought from solicitors to guarantee that your assets are left to those you love and they won’t experience disappointment after you have died because the Will has not been drafted correctly. Our Lifetime Planning Department offers specialist advice regarding wills, inheritance tax planning, applications for probate and administration, lasting powers of attorney, registration of enduring powers of attorney, and care home advice. If you would like to make an appointment to make a Will or for advice regarding a Will that you have already had drawn up, or any other legal advice, contact solicitors Margaret Gordon or Jennifer Howell on 0151 342 6447 at Maxwell Hodge Solicitors.

Taste Test The Lawns Restaurant, Thornton Hall Hotel

COMMUNITY

T

12

hornton Hall’s restaurant has undergone some big changes from its previous incarnation as the Italian Room. With contemporary flashes in the tableware and now named The Lawns, it boasts stunning views of the hall’s gardens and can comfortably seat approximately 50 people. New executive chef Gordon Campbell is already putting his own stamp on the menu and comes to Thornton Hall with a big reputation. It is clear that there is great enthusiasm amongst the staff as they embark on an exciting period of change and there is no doubt that the restaurant is heading in the right direction. The restaurant’s dinner menu offers a variety of well constructed dishes, using stunningly fresh seasonal ingredients sourced locally. Starters include seared red mullet and pressed terrine of ham hock with piccalilli. The seared red mullet in particular was cooked perfectly and was balanced with a zingy basil pesto. Highly recommended for the main course is the exquisite grilled salmon with sautéed potato and

wilted spinach, but our favourite was definitely the pea and spring onion risotto which was deliciously creamy. The peas, in particular, were bursting with freshness as if they had been picked that very morning and cut through the creamy risotto, creating a perfectly balanced dish. Restaurant manager Olivier Gamory served two wines, a delightful Chardonnay which perfectly complemented the freshness of the salmon and a red Pinot Noir which went well with the ham hock terrine. Olivier explained that the Paul Jacqueson label, which is from the Bourgogne area, is not easy to find in his native France so it is a considerable coup for the restaurant to secure such an exclusive brand.

If at first you don’t succeed, reload and try again - Scott Adams

Thornton Hall have already earned two AA rosettes and the aim is to add further accolades this year. Olivier explained that their exciting menu is constantly evolving according to the seasons, so that the vegetables and meats fit in perfectly with the time of year. Remarkably, such a fantastic dining experience does not cost the earth. From 1st October the Sunday Menu is served from 12.30pm, through to 9pm. Two dine for £39 including a bottle of house wine (per couple) The Lawns is just the perfect place for special occasions and to have lunch or just a treat in the most elegant atmosphere. Highly recommended. For reservations call 336 3938

What happened when war broke out? THE media has been full of commemorative stories to mark the outbreak of World War Two 70 years ago. But what was happening in West Kirby and Caldy in September 1939 when Britain declared war? Ian Boumphrey has published a book entitled ‘Wirral on the Home Front 1939 – 45’ which contains loads of wartime information and stories, including a number from this area. Calday Grange Grammar School The outbreak of war in September 1939 caused a considerable curtailment to school activities as there was danger from air attack; shortages of food and fuel supplies and loss of staff who had joined the forces. The school acquired a series of air-raid shelters dug in the Old Field along the touchline of the 1st XV rugby pitch. The headmaster, Mr Glasspool, had an organisational flair and this was proved when the alert went and the whole school of 400 pupils and masters were safe in the bunkers in less than four minutes. However, 400 people in a stuffy environment underground must have been an ordeal and the sounding of the ‘All Clear’ with a resumption of school lessons must have been a relief. Weekly gas-mask drills were carried out by the whole school and the observance of blackout regulations in the winter months added another difficulty to efficient working. Mr Glasspool, who had been made a colonel in the Home Guard, became second in command in the Hoylake area and, being heavily involved in the organisation, was spending more time away from the school. Digging for victory now became important and massive portions of both Old and New Fields were put under crops with the school kitchens, which served over 300 meals a day, becoming almost self sufficient in vegetables.

Caldy Caldy Manor was taken over by the army in 1939. During the time that the army were in occupation, soldiers found a subterranean passage which started near the fire escape and crossed to Hilbre Island (so writes Hilda M Cooke, League of Friends, 1976). The passage was then sealed off to prevent the soldiers using it. After the army left, the Manor remained empty for about five years before becoming a hospital.

14

West Kirby The RAF camp, West Kirby (it was known as West Kirby as that was the nearest railway station) which opened in 1940, operated initially as a training camp and later became a transit camp. A chapel dedicated to St Paul was served by a padre and set up in a hangar. Previously the Vicar of St John’s, Frankby served as chaplain. Wirral on the Home Front 1939 – 45 can be bought from Lingham’s in West Kirby, Borders Books, Cheshire Oaks, and Gould’s in Heswall.

Marie Curie walkers raise over £3,500! MARIE Curie Cancer Care held its annual sponsored walk from Thurstaston Visitor Centre last month. Families walked a scenic route along the Wirral Way, through The Dales and The Dungeon raising money to support the Marie Curie nurses. John and his family walked in memory of his father Eddie Bullen who was cared for by Marie Curie nurses this year. Marie Curie fundraiser Colette Byrne said: “The Thurstaston walk has really exceeded our expectations, this year we had just over 60 walkers who raised an amazing pledged amount of £3,500! “The money raised makes such a difference to the patients and their families. Our wonderful nurses simply couldn’t continue to provide the care they do without the kindness of the people taking part in this type of event’. For more info contact Colette on 801 1405 or [email protected] Money raised from the Thurstaston Walk will be used to help the Marie Curie Wirral home nursing service provide practical nursing care to people seriously ill with cancer in the comfort of their own homes.

Lenny’s film gets Wirral screening

Hoylake’s Paul Thelwell completed his first Ironman triathlon in 13 hours, 22 minutes and 54 seconds. To achieve this he swam in open water for 2.4 miles, followed by a 112 mile cycle and then a 26.2 mile run.

The film premier of ‘Colour Blind’, directed and inspired by Lenny Henry, and supported by Liverpool Football Club for the Anthony Walker Foundation, took place last month. Wirral West Conservative candidate Esther McVey has worked closely with Gee Walker, the mother of murdered teenager Anthony, and the Foundation for the last four years, and introduced Lenny Henry to Gee and asked him to work with the Foundation. The film will be screened in schools throughout the Wirral. Gee, Esther and Wirral Mums at the premier.

Q. Do I need to use a toner after I cleanse? A. If you use a traditional oil-based cleanser then a toner applied on cotton wool will remove the last traces of cleanser to leave the surface of your skin completely clean. However, if you use a water-based or foaming cleanser this is not strictly necessary as the skin should be completely clean once it has been rinsed with tepid water. Remember that toners won’t close pores and they won’t deep-clean, but depending on the formulation they can leave the face feeling soft and refreshed. Many advanced toner formulations are supplied in spray form and can be sprayed onto the face to add extra moisture before you apply your moisturiser. Spray toners can be used throughout the day to freshen- up the skin and add more moisture.

Q. My eyelashes are fine and sparse. I’ve tried lash extensions which make them look longer but don’t do anything to thicken them. Are there any alternatives to lashthickening mascaras? A. There are quite a few alternatives to lashthickening mascaras. Look at the following web link for more information. http://www.telegraph. co.uk/science/science-news/6034510/Longereyelashes-without-mascara-thanks-to-scientificbreakthrough.html I find that very often extremely fine lashes often cannot support the weight of a lash extension. However, there are new lash extensions available now which are much lighter and allow for two eyelash extensions to be bonded onto each natural eyelash giving a much fuller look. Ask at your local salon for further details.

WHAT’S NEW BY ELEANOR DAVIES, MANAGER OF LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, WEST KIRBY

Paperback Fiction: Me Cheeta by James Lever Longlisted for this year’s Booker Prize as ‘the wildcard’, this is the fictional autobiography of a chimpanzee. Sounds whacky? It is. A fantastic spoof on Hollywood memoirs, this is the life story of Tarzan’s chimp, his liberation from the Liberian Jungle and rise to stardom Cheeta’s bitchy asides about his fellow actors and his battle with drink and drugs make for hilarious reading. Anyone who remembers the golden days of Hollywood with affection will find this a wonderfully funny andsurprisingly- at times quite moving book. Autobiography: ‘My Better Half and Me’ by Joss and Rosemary Ackland Actor Joss Ackland and his late wife Rosemary were exceptionally lucky to have found each other, and their incredibly close bond saw them through the ups and downs of marriage for over fifty years. This is an account of their lifelong love affair from both their points of view. Rosemary kept a diary from the age of fifteen and continued it for her whole life even after the onset of motor neurone disease which left her mute and immobile. Interspersed with her entries is Joss’s commentary charting all the major events of their lives including the rise of his brilliant career and the tragic death of their oldest son. A true old fashioned romance. Cookery: ‘Nigella Express’ by Nigella Lawson Newly out in paperback, this is Nigella’s latest offering and it is a treat. Beautifully illustrated, it contains a whole range of wonderful recipes for every day cooking for all you domestic goddesses with little time to spare (I know you’re out there, Heswall and West Kirby!) New ideas for healthy eating mixed with some unashamedly comfort food all go together to make up a great cookery book . Would make a fantastic Christmas present.

Autumn Delights in October

Gardening by Janet Heath

Autumn is well underway and your garden will be gradually shutting down in preparation for winter. The exuberance of summer flowers and foliage gives way to the more subtle colours of gold, russet, barley yellow and orange from grasses and leaves. At this time of year there are still flowers - look out for Dahlias in white red or yellow, the pink flowers of the fleshy Sedum spectabile and some Japanese Anemones will still be flowering. However it is the foliage from grasses that will give you delight at this time of year. The grasses such as Stipa gigantea with its tall oat heads and Miscanthus sinensis Zebrinus has cream striped green leaves. Trees such as Acers have wonderful rich red foliage. There are also many varieties of Crab Apple (Malus) such as John Downie or Golden Hornet with red or yellow small apples that stay on the trees in autumn. Rowans or Sorbus trees also have ornamental berries that can last on the tree for weeks although the birds tend to eat the red berries first leaving yellow and cream berries on the tree. In the garden you can continue to dig up and split perennials at this time of year. The roots will continue to grow even in frosty conditions in soil that is still warm from summer below the surface. Conifers and other evergreens can be moved at this time of year, as there is less likelihood of the roots drying out. Lawns can be scarified and given an autumn feed in October. It is also a good time to lay new turf as it will be well watered in and be less likely to be walked on thus allowing it to grow on well. Complete digging up any potatoes making sure none are left behind to harbour diseases. Apples that are best for keeping tend to be ready for harvesting in October. An apple that is ripe is one that can be picked when you lift it gently and it comes away easily. Pulling an apple from the tree is an indication that it is not yet ripe.
