Back 2 School Bash

Congregational Meeting

Our third annual Back 2 School Bash was a big success! Five churches worked together to provide a BBQ meal, games and crafts for the kids, and basketball activities for the youth, along with the opportunity for all of us to meet and make new friends. THANKS TO ALL from FFC who came to help make the day happen! It takes a large group of volunteers (125+!) to make an event like this run smoothly. Even though it turned out to be a really warm day, there were a lot of really COOL things that happened! • One Federated family met a young man who is interested in coming to church. • 250 backpacks were given out— filled with supplies that YOU provided. • Churches working together is a very cool thing. (We’re the “Just Jesus” group.)

Over the sixteen years of my pastoral ministry I have discovered that congregational meetings aren’t gatherings that most church members beat the doors down to attend. However, this year’s congregational meeting will be one that you will want to attend. It will be a meeting like no other you’ve attended. The meeting will begin with a brief review of many positive things that have happened through our church during the past ministry year. John Porter will review the missions budget and share the vision for missions ministry in the coming years. Tom Hefner will give us a financial report and present the proposed 2009/10 ministry budget. Additionally, each staff member will share their vision for their respective ministries for the upcoming year. I will share the overall direction and vision for our ministry as well. I will report on staff adjustments and changes and answer questions concerning these changes. Finally, when the meeting is concluded, we will adjourn to the newly redecorated Fellowship Hall for free ice cream and lemonade. There are many positive things to share and I hope that you will be present to hear first hand how God is paving the way for FFC to grow and be effective in ministry.

We’re looking forward to ongoing ministry at Oakridge. Our KidsClub runs every Saturday, 11–noon. We are developing a plan to start reaching into the homes and see how we can minister to the parents as well! Interested in helping with this ministry?? Contact me in the Children’s Ministries office, 515.255.2122.

No, we’re not starting an exercise class or a weight management program. This study is designed specifically to take you to that next level of purpose—to reveal how God has designed you and help you see how that design fits the intention for which you were created. In six lessons, Erik Rees unpacks the five elements of God’s blueprint for creating you. Each session includes tools that help bring crystal clarity to your future goals and show you how to have the most fulfilling life possible—a life lived for God’s purposes, by God’s design. Join us on Sunday, August 23 at 10:45AM in Room 108. Or you can sign up today on the Care & Communication card!

Meals from the Heartland September 3–7 | Hy-Vee Hall

Join with others from our community to package meals to be sent to starving people in South Africa, Haiti, and Jamaica. We will be forming groups of 8 people at set times. You can form your own group, or sign up and we will put you with a team. There are also many opportunities to serve individually or for extended periods of time. Please check your calendars and sign up in the foyers or on your C&C card next week. Check out their website: www.mealsfromtheheartland.org

Serve at 60 Plus!

We are looking for a few volunteers to help with 60+ once each month starting in September. We need people to help set up, serve, and clean up, typically anytime from 10:00AM to 1:00PM. If you are interested or have questions, please contact John Porter at the church office. This is a great opportunity for home school students looking for a chance to serve.

30 Day Muslim Prayer Focus August 22–September 20 18th Annual Worldwide Prayer Project

This coincides yearly with Ramadan (the holy month of fasting in Islam). We call upon Christians to make a concerted but considerate effort during this time to learn about, pray for and reach out to Muslim neighbors—across the street and around the world. Pick up information at the missions desk, or check your newspaper for weekly highlights focusing on the Muslim world.

Questions about any of these opportunities?

The Zellmers serve among Albanian Muslims in Kosova offering a lending library, English lessons, kids, youth and ladies groups, Bible studies, camps and home education for MKs. The ADD-K Bible Camp & Leadership Training Center is vital to reaching one million Albanian youth in an 80 mile radius—a major catalyst to church growth in their area of the Balkans.

Mission Board: SIM International Location: Cochabamba, Bolivia What do they do? At the Center for Transcultural Training, located in the Coachaca Missionary Training Center, Arden (along with their son, Jonathan) helps prepare and mentor Bolivian missionaries called by the Lord to reach the still unreached. Helen’s ministry is teaching first grade at Carachipampa Christian School where she is also elementary grade school supervisor. Together they are premarital counselors.

Prayer Requests: • For the camps that keep them so busy –a heat wave adds to their exhaustion. • For the hundreds of campers to make steps of faith, many are closer in their journey and some are going through deep waters. • For work on the Blessing House building to be completed by winter for large groups. • For “Z”, age 22, who had his hard earned savings confiscated by his family, was disowned and kicked out of his home--all for following Christ.

Beth Lamb Mission Board: Child Evangelism Fellowship Location: State of Iowa What does she do? Beth is CEF’s State Director. CEF’s 3-fold purpose is to evangelize children, disciple them in the Word of God and establish them in a local Bible-teaching church. Christian Youth in Action trains teens to share the Gospel at 5-Day Clubs in the summer. Mailbox Club is a safe website for children. After school Good News Clubs reach many for Christ.

Praise: • For 31 summer missionaries who reached hundreds of children with the Gospel this summer.

Prayer Requests:

• For more workers as they gear up for Good News Club ministry in public schools. For God to call the summer missionaries of His choosing into full time ministry with CEF. For many of their summer missionaries to return next summer to teach Clubs again; that they will live for the Lord and be witnesses to their peers. For open doors in churches for mission conferences, teacher training and presenting the ministry of CEF. For new board members from across Iowa. Financial needs. Sunday, August 16, 2009

Author Rick Shephard provides answers to these and many more questions in his latest addition to the “Following God” series.

Christmas Already?

It’s not too early to be thinking about Christmas — or preparing to bless a needy child. This Christmas season, you can share the love and hope of Jesus Christ with a needy child by using a simple shoe box. Operation Christmas Child is an easy missions project that every member and family can participate in by bringing a gift-filled shoe box to the church. Complete details will be coming in the fall, but for now, don’t forget to stock up on extra school supplies and other items you can put in a shoe box gift. For questions or information on how you can get more involved contact Mary in the Children’s Ministries office or go to www.samaritanspurse.org and click on Operation Christmas Child.
