Good Sense for Bad Times By Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries

The economic downturn we are facing has caused many people to both seek and offer advice. We read and hear news reports from government, banking, financial, and economic experts on how to handle this current crisis. For Christians the best source of guidance comes from the Bible. For times like these, James, the brother of Jesus, can give us a solid game plan. In the first letter written following the death of Jesus, James provided clear guidance for living the life of a believer. For bad times James offered advice on how to navigate the uncertainty of the future. In chapter four, verses 13 through 15, he counseled: “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.’ Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.’ James reminds us that the future is uncertain. The only certainty is the nature and character of God who provides for your needs. James says to base your financial plan on this understanding, recognizing that it will not always be smooth sailing ahead. To assist you in financially planning in this manner we are offering the Good $ense budgeting course. Good $ense is a biblically-based workshop that will give you the tools and process to make good economic decisions even in bad times. This six-week course will run from July 12 through August 16 on Sunday mornings at 10:45AM in room 108. You can register on the Care & Communication card or at the table in the foyer this morning. An additional free resource is Patrick Mosley’s “How to survive the Economic Meltdown.” This can be downloaded at http:/survivethemeltdown.org.

First Federated Church has been blessed to be able to help Lutheran Social Services/Refugee Services by storing 200 brand new twin size beds that will be used for new families coming to Des Moines from around the world.

MISSION ONE

Reaching others for Jesus Christ

Matt Richardson

Alan & Helena

Mission Board: Wycliffe Bible Translators Location: Texas/future Closed Country What does he do? Matt was raised in a missionary home and led to Christ by his father at age six. In high school he became a spiritual leader among his peers. Because of his interest and ability in languages and linguistics and his love for Scripture, he has been preparing to serve in Bible translation. He plans to go to language school this summer in Southeast Asia and translate the Bible for an unreached language group.

Closed Country What do they do? Alan and Helena had to flee their former country due to the political situation there. Their aim as they move to a new area is to see churches of Muslim background believers planted, bearing spiritual fruit and multiplying. They will be working with a team and Alan will be teaching English, while Helena (besides looking after baby James) will help with some administration for the language center.

Praises: • For the birth of their son, James, and for his great health. • For safe travel from Alan’s homeland to Helena’s.

Praise:

Prayer Requests:

• For Matt’s recent graduation (Master’s degree) from the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics. • His assignment is in place and he knows where he will be going.

• For their time in Canada to be a good time to reconnect with family and supporters. • For their September departure. • For the right village for them to live in. • For people there to be spiritually open. • For their residency permits to come through without difficulty.

Prayer Requests: • For his planned departure date of August 1. • For the remaining $165 per month and $4,000 one-time for his startup needs—required before he can leave. • For his visa application to be granted enabling him to be in language school for the first year. • For visiting an island to meet his potential partners and the group that is in place there, hoping to start translation work.

Dan & Sylvia Rogers Mission Board: Mission Aviation Fellowship Location: Quito, Ecuador What do they do? As a missionary pilot/mechanic, Dan provides safe transportation for missionaries, Christian workers, medical workers and patients in rain forest areas where there is no other means of transportation. The Rogers have served in Suriname, Haiti, Honduras, and now again in Ecuador where Dan is Chief of Maintenance. Sylvia, a gifted musician, teaches music and provides hospitality.

Praises: • They are now flying with no restrictions and making a lot of flight hours. However, regulations against foreigners flying indefinitely in Ecuador are not going to go away.

Prayer Requests: • For finding new Ecuadorian pilots who are qualified, spiritually and technically, and getting them trained in the MAF standard way—a real challenge. They will have two in July. • For smooth transition of all local employees as they shift from being employed by MAF to being employed by Alas de Socorro del Ecuador (ADSE). • For Dan and Sylvia’s 7 month furlough plans beginning in September--broken into 2 parts by a six month trip to Suriname.

KZ Church

Our buggy summer continues in KZ Church, but we still aren’t calling in the bug guys. We LOVE these bugs! They’re all a part of “Metamorphosis—A God-directed, Life Change Production.” Each week these friendly bugs will help our kids understand how God can change us into His beautiful creations, just as the caterpillar goes through a transformation to become a butterfly. This week in KZ Church, we met the stars of a bug circus. They taught us all about controlling our tongues. Remember, when you hear a rumor, close your mouth and hold your tongue. Be wise and don’t spread the gossip! Proverbs 10:19 says, “Those who talk a lot are likely to sin. But those who control their tongues are wise.”

Lazer Sports Camp ’09

The Children’s Ministries of First Federated and Des Moines First Assembly just completed an action-packed week of Lazer Sports Camp ’09 in Tower Park, adjacent to our church property. Was it hot? Oh my, yes! Water, shade trees, and sunscreen were precious commodities. Nevertheless, it was a great week of sports training and Bible instruction for over 120 campers, not only from our churches but also from other churched and unchurched families in the community. A huge thank you to the staff members and volunteers from both churches who worked so hard to make this a memorable week for our campers. Thank you also to the many Federated folks who so generously provided snacks for our campers. All those Rice Krispie Treats, fruit snacks, Goldfish crackers and oranges were welcome treats for our kids (and adults) after vigorous sports workouts in baseball, basketball, soccer, tae kwon do or cheerleading. Pray with us that the seeds of the Gospel which were sown in young hearts this week would grow and produce fruit in the days ahead.
