Thanksgiving Outreach! By Terry Stark, Pastor of Evangelism & Facilities Manager

International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to gather together over a table laden with the special dishes of the holiday. But what if you don’t have family around? What if you’re far away from family and friends? What if you’re an international student at Drake, or a resident from another country at Oakridge, or a family trying to make ends meet by visiting our Food Pantry or Clothes Closet? Many people from other countries don’t even know what Thanksgiving is all about. They don’t know it’s a time to give thanks to a gracious God who provided for those first Pilgrims who came to this country looking for religious freedom…right on down to us today. Maybe you attend First Federated and you don’t have family with whom to share the holiday. Please consider yourself invited to have your Thanksgiving dinner with us. Single parents are invited to come and bring their kids and enjoy a day off from cooking. Or maybe you’d like to be involved in making and/or serving this Thanksgiving meal as a labor of love—God’s love! We will have an evening meal from 4 to 6pm. Please sign up on the Care & Communication Card if you would like to volunteer to prepare or serve this meal on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26. For more information contact: Terry Stark, or Pat Anderson at the church 255.2122. Volume 11

First Federated Church

Churches across the United States and around the world are preparing to “remember those in bonds” (Hebrews 13:3). Today, we at FFC are joining in praying for the persecuted church. Begun in 1996, IDOP is a day for intercessory prayer and citizen action on behalf of persecuted Christian communities worldwide. As Voice of the Martyrs staff meets with persecuted Christians around the world, their first request is that we PRAY for them. Our persecuted family is not asking us to pray that the persecution will stop, they are asking us to pray they will remain faithful to Christ in spite of the persecution and the pressure they face. Pick up free information and how to pray on the Mission table.

Work Projects

Do you need your lawn raked of the abundance of leaves? Your house winterized? Consider calling on our teens! Many of them are ready to begin raising money for next summer’s mission trip and are willing to work hard! Before hiring out your much needed chores…consider our Federated teens! Contact Nikki Jackson in the Youth Office, and she will get you paired up with some of our teens to get the job done!

MISSION ONE

Reaching others for Jesus Christ

Peggy McCracken

Kurt & Kathy Ritz

Mission Board: Campus Crusade, Christian Embassy Location: Washington, DC What does she do? Peggy’s ministry is evangelism and discipleship with women ambassadors, wives of ambassadors and women chiefs of staff to members of the US Congress. She pursues avenues in hard to reach areas of the world represented in Washington in embassies; gets to know non-believers in casual settings by creating social events where they feel comfortable; begins new groups and does follow-up.

Mission Board: Campus Crusade for Christ Location: Pearland, Texas What do they do? The Ritzes are involved in evangelism and discipleship, leading students and ministry at Rice University in Houston. Students there are highly intellectual as almost half were either the valedictorian or salutatorian of their senior class in high school. Kurt seeks to engage their intellect in the areas of apologetics and in-depth Bible study. Kathy is the daughter of Daryl and Darlene Adams.

Praises:

Praises:

• For the invitation to start ministries on the campus of Houston Baptist University. • For open doors at HBU—many of the students have the potential to be Christ-centered laborers for a lifetime, both in the US and overseas.

• For great attendance at a morning coffee for new diplomatic wives—30 attended. • These wives expressed interest in further involvement with Christian Embassy.

Prayer Requests:

Prayer Requests:

• For Peggy’s Bible study for diplomatic wives—an average of 13 new women are attending. • For building existing relationships and reaching out to new leaders. • For these new leaders. It can be very difficult and lonely being in a strange culture when you have to be polite all the time and look like you know what you are doing.

• For God’s guidance at HBU. • That the handful to students presently involved would grow mightily in the Lord. • For more staff to join them so they can continue to launch into new frontiers at Rice, HBU and beyond. • For the ability to engage non-Christians better through discussion time and evangelism.

Matt

Jeff & Melissa

Location: Asia What does he do? Matt was raised in a missionary home and led to Christ by his father at age six. In high school he became a spiritual leader among his peers. Because of his interest and ability in languages and linguistics and his love for Scripture ,he has been preparing to serve in Bible translation. He recently began language school in Southeast Asia and plans to translate the Bible for an unreached language group.

Location: Asia What do they do? Jeff and Melissa are in a restricted access nation, both serving as English teachers at their host university. They focus on the 30,000 students in their city. Their vision is to see a group of national teachers and students meeting together regularly for worship and reaching out to others in ministry. They seek to identify students with spiritual interest.

Praises: • • • •

Praises:

He is enjoying exploring a new culture in a beautiful city. For making some good friends. For one-on-one language classes with his teacher. For meeting his potential team partner.

• The heat will be turned on Nov. 15th.

Prayer Requests: • For protection from H1N1—their country has many cases. • For good contacts and a positive response from teachers they invited to a Bible study. • For students in their Bible study who have a lot of false ideas about God’s character (i.e. that He should give them whatever they want). • For their dating course sessions. • For Melissa’s difficulty in getting to know students and grading homework that is very time consuming. • For their physical and spiritual health; for knowing God better through their devotional times.

Prayer Requests: • For the challenges of doing everything right, learning the language, making friends, avoiding faux pas, communicating truth when opportunities arise. • For wisdom as to when he can make a trip to the village to meet the rest of the team he will be serving with in the future.

Thanksgiving for Families

It’s not about the turkey, the pumpkin pie, Grandma’s house, football or even the long weekend vacation. Thanksgiving is just what the word says—thanks giving. How great is that? A non-commercialized holiday set aside for a gratitude attitude adjustment! Take some time this year to help your children (and you, too) recognize all the good things in your lives and then express or demonstrate gratitude. First, thank God for your blessings. Then, as a family, find ways you can share those blessings with others. It could be as small as a note of encouragement to someone who is ill or it might be sharing a meal with a family in need. Whatever you choose, make sure your gratitude attitude is growing and blooming big time this year!

KZ Church

Last Sunday the KZ Church kids had a busy morning packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The children divided into small groups to fill 26 boxes with school supplies, hygiene items, toys, candy and clothing items for needy boys and girls. They wrote letters to the children who will receive the boxes and prayed for those children. The kids have been bringing their offerings to pay the cost of shipping their boxes. Great job, kids!

We Love New Babies!

We love to pray for expectant parents and we love to celebrate the birth of each Federated baby. If you are expecting a baby, the GEM (Great Expectation Ministry) team is ready to serve you. Please let us know your due date. Put a note on your Care and Communication Card or call the Children’s Ministries office at 255.2122 (…and CONGRATULATIONS!)
